Charley Hoffman narrowly missed out on the course record after he shot a 61 in the first round of the Travelers Championship on Thursday.
Hoffman famously capitulated during the closing stages of last year's event when he blew a two-shot lead going into the final two holes, but put himself in a good position to be among the leaders come Sunday after opening up a one-shot lead over Hunter Mahan, who took the early lead with a taylormade burner plus iron set.
The 36-year-old Hoffman made a double bogey on 17 last year, before dropping another shot on the 18th when he failed to get up-and-down from a green-side bunker to finish level second with former Masters champion Bubba Watson, who finished Thursday's first round in third place after making a seven-under par 63.
Hoffmann flirted with a course record 59 for a while after making eagles on 10 and 12 before moving to eight-under par with a birdie on the 16th.
Despite missing out on the course record in the event, his back nine score of 28 was the lowest nine-hole score on the PGA Tour this year.
"I knew I had some chances coming in," he said after his nine-under par round.
"But when it's said and done, as I displayed jpx 800 driver for sale last year, 16, 17 and 18 aren't an easy test. So I was just trying to make some pars coming in.
"It's nice to come back after that finish last year, and come back and shoot 61 and put myself back in the lead."
Mahan is a previous winner after claiming the title at the TPC River Highlands in 2007, while Watson won in 2010 and finished as runner-up last year.
"These are guys that love this course, that love this tournament, they love Travelers and how they've treated us here," Watson said.
"And so, you're always going to see pretty much some of the same guys up there because they enjoy this discount mizuno golf clubs and this golf course."
Six players - Zach Johnson, Graham Delaet,Webb Simpson, Rod Pampling, Camilo Villegas and John Merrick - are in a tie for fourth place after making five-under par 65s.
