Hey guys,

Hard to believe that it’s only been about a week since I took over Commissioner. You guys have been great. It hasn’t been without its interesting moments and we’ve seen a few people to come and go. Trading has been going for about six days and it looks like if we hadn’t gotten it going on April 1st, people might have imploded they’ve been waiting for so long to start trading. I’ll address this and more in this week’s Jam with Jeriko:

Trading:

First of all, big thanks to DaMan for keeping a tight ship. What else would you expect from a Marine? I think it’s made everyone’s job a heck of a lot easier to be able to jump on Google Docs and keep a tab on rosters and salary cap. Just a reminder to everyone, review the rules rgarding trading and let DaMan know who you are when you email him which will make the process a lot quicker.

With that in mind, I want to remind everyone that this is more than Madden. You don’t get to hit the reset button or reload the game if in a couple of days you are regretting a trade you made. You reap what you sow. It’s been 6 days and there has been 47 trades as I write this and the day hasn’t even really begun yet. It’s probably going to be more than 8 a day for a while. Ultimately, it’s your team, but there is still more than 3 weeks to go so if you think you need to take a couple of days to think over an offer, you’ve got plenty of time.

Some teams have found themselves in early cap trouble with the choices they’ve made. Fortunately, there is still time to make adjustments, but again, in the pursuit to get a certain player or two, you might find that you have to give up more in the long run. Bear that in mind with every choice you make.

There are three teams yet to join the party. Are they slow to the dance, just biding their time, or already happy with their roster? Time will tell. One of those has already been listed as an early favorite to contend for the Super Bowl. No pressure.

Staff:

As everyone has probably noticed by now, we had an ownership change, and there will no doubt be more as people’s situations change. I’m glad to see that in general people have been very active on these boards. The 2009 season has no doubt generated some excitement. Ultimately, owners, you are responsible for the people that you hire, so don’t give them the responsibilities according to their position if you don’t trust them. And staff, if you sign up for a team, you answer to the owners, it’s up to teams to find a middle ground. Any board member that joins a team is under contract for one year unless that teams owner otherwise relieves you of that duty. So if you get upset with how things are going, you better work it out or hope you get fired, because you aren’t allowed to join a team until 2010, unless it’s for another higher position.

As I mentioned before, there will always be a need for new owners. By my count, there have been ten ownership changes since the league first started, nearly half of all the teams in the league. If you are interested in becoming an owner down the road, email your interest to gotham_spartans@yahoo.com. I am doing it this way so you can act in anonymity under your owner. I am in no way trying to subvert any team’s owners, but its better to plan in advance and get a general idea of who might want to be an owner ahead to time rather than scramble to find a replacement when it becomes a situation. Your name and interest will not be shared with your owner. If you want to tell them, that’s up to you.

If you are interested in ownership, keep in mind, your actions will be watched. Your participation in the league and interaction with other teams will be part of the decision making process in determining who is ready for an owner. As I said, when I first took over, treat other people with respect. It also helps, especially once the season begins, that your team has some success. If you are winless, I’m not sure you would have what it takes to be an owner and run your own team.

Comings and Goings:

We’ve seen some people that have been part of the league from the beginning decide to leave for whatever reason that is entirely up to them. While we appreciate what they have accomplished in their time here and wish them the best, I see this as an opportunity for others to step up and take on a greater role. The league is greater than one individual. The collective of all the owners working together to make this league fun is what makes this league what it is.

Without attempting to sound like a braggart, let me use myself as an example. I am an original owner and at first, pretty much did nothing to advance the league. I recruited staff in my own interest and did nothing to assist the league in the first free agent draft. As the league took on importance to me, I assisted in the rookie draft, became part of the original league council, created the 2008 schedule, and constantly communicated with Chazz after the council as disbanded and now I’m the Commissioner. It’s a role I gladly take and I see that there are others that have grown as well for mere owners to integral parts of the league and where staff members have become owners and are even taking another step to make the league better than what it currently is. I see that as we all do and we appreciate it. Where there is a vacuum, there is an opportunity to fill it.

The newest members of the league may become future owners so take the opportunity to develop them and allow their voices to be heard. General George S. Patton said, “Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.” That applies here. People have good ideas and always allow them to be able to share them. Your team will be better for it.

The League Council:

Finally, as I remarked in my first address as Commissioner, I am reestablishing the League Council. Today begins the first step. I am taking nominations to be part of the Council along with myself, DaMan, and Zman. You must be a team owner to be part of the Council. Only owners can vote for their representatives to the Council.

Consider that when nominating someone or yourself to the council. You become that voice for all the league owners in certain matters. There will be responsibilities. It’s not a popularity contest. There are owners that have constantly contributed to the benefit of the league with their actions and their opinions. I hope you all bear that in mind when deciding who to nominate, and next week, who to vote for.

I will take nominations via PM or email. Whichever you feel comfortable with. Each team will have 3 votes to choose who will represent them on the League Council. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread.

Final item of note, if you haven't yet sent me your email address, send it to my email gotham_spartans@yahoo.com, don't PM it to me. Thanks.

Thanks again guys for your continued enthusiasm and hot start to 2009.

Jam with Jeriko 4/13 - Stadium Redraft and your LC Nominees
Good morning everyone, its time for your weekly Jam with Jeriko. Lots of topics to discuss, so let’s get to it.

Stadium Redraft:

This Friday is the deadline for making your decision on whether you plan on participating in April 20th’s stadiums redraft. If you haven’t already responded in the appropriate thread, please do so. If you don’t meet the deadline, you won’t participate, simple as that.

As I said before, I’m not big fan of this process, and I’d like to put an end to it after this one, but those details will be discussed with the forthcoming League Council and put to a vote by the general group of owners.

League Council Voting:

Speaking of League Council, I have received and confirmed all nominations by interested parties for the League Council. Voting will start this week. The owners that are up for a vote are the following board members:

Art
BillsOrangutan
BillsVA
Budda
BuffaloMatt23
DirectFX
Sledge
The Edwards Empire

Each team gets 3 votes. Voting will go for one week and the winners will be announced at next Monday’s Jam with Jeriko. In order to keep the voting process secret, but be able to verify that its only owners that will be voting, email your votes to gotham_spartans@yahoo.com. Voting ends on Sunday, April 19th at 5PM.

Good luck to all the candidates. Those up for a vote can use this thread to make their case as to why they should be part of the League Council.

Edit: I should point out that the members of the League Council will sit for one year. An election will occur every year and previously elected members are allowed to run again.

Future Roster Cuts and Additions:

In order to streamline the cuts process, all future cuts will be emailed to traderequest@gmail.com. Identify your team in the subject line like this:

“Gotham Spartans Cuts”

In the body, include the player’s name and position, their 2009 salary, the number of games they played in 2008 and salary cap hit, if any. It will be verified and posted in a new thread by DaMan in the Transaction Forum.

In addition, future roster additions will be handled in the same manner. All players added after the free agent draft are automatically signed to one year deals.

Also, you may opt to release players that you had just drafted in the free agent draft without having to sign that player to a 1-3 year contract, but if you release that player prior to signing them to a contract it gets treated as if you had signed them to a 1 year deal. So if you draft a $2 million player, you take a $1 million cap hit if you cut them and haven’t signed them to a contract first. I’m not sure why anyone would draft a player only to cut them in a matter of weeks, but there won’t be a discussion that a team hadn’t actually signed them yet. The FA draft treats your selection of that player as if you had signed them to a deal, the length just has yet to be determined.

Schedule Release:

The 2009 team schedule will be released later today. I thought the Prime Time game was kind of a cool idea last year so I’ve given thoughts about doing it again this year. What do you think? Let me know. I’d like to hear from you regardless of your position and will discuss it more when the person that will be simulating the games this season.

Owners will receive this via email as well.

That’s all for this week, things are starting to heat up and where getting closer to the free agent draft. I hope everyone is ready.
