So what is the most important aspect of a song? Is it the beat, the lyrics, the singer, the instrumentals, etc.? Please link to a song that you feel supports your opinion. |

"Hee... Hee... Hee..."

I say pretty much all the instruments make a song. The singer makes it a lot better, but I say instruments before singer. I could listen to this song without the vocals and still love it. And I could listen to ぎんじねこ -ginjineko- forever! No vocals in his songs. =P Once again, not saying vocals are bad at all they make songs a lot better most of the time. Just saying instruments come before vocals. |

IMMA PLAYING MY PIANOOOO
|
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing "Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!" One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world It was the wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king? I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world

Viva La Vida. 8D And I'd say how everything flows together, and then the bridge, usually my favorite part of a song. |

It really depends what you mean by important. If you mean to give the song some kind of meaning, then the lyrics are probably the most important, as words are understood to have actual meanings and definitions. If you're talking about personal opinions, then I guess I'd say the lyrics, for the above reason. Although I'd say it's pretty close, as the instruments often make the piece of music sound brilliant, and without them you don't have much of a piece of music. While without the lyrics, you still do. I could link to a bunch of songs with "meaningful" lyrics, - as meaningfulness is largely subjective - and some songs with instrumental and non-instrumental versions. I can't really think of any specific ones for each of those, and I'm sure everyone knows songs that fit into those categories. I'll probably post song links tomorrow. |

Whatever, just as long as it has a synthesizer and male vocals in it. ![]() But seriously, as long as it has a nice bit of synth in it, the rest doesn't really matter to me. Vocals, yeah, alright, but I'd take a synthesizer on its own. |

Well-written lyrics are nice, but for me, lyrics generally take a backseat to songwriting and musicianship. A well-composed song with a memorable structure will generally always be better than a song that's just thrown together. I also prefer unique song structures to the generic, "verse chorus verse chorus break chorus" formula. Give me the chaotic yet memorable structures used by bands like Anata than the formulaic stuff used by mainstream acts any day. I listen to a lot of death and funeral doom metal, so I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to vocals. However, I don't like that sink drain, pig-squealing bullshit used by a lot of modern "brutal death metal" bands (Wormed is a prime example of this). Supreme technicality is cool, but not always necessary. Some bands are able to write excellent material using simplistic riffs. |

You'd probably kill me if I said Depeche Mode > PSB. And it's all in the riff. Catchy riff, catchy song... normally. XP |

The Beats, the melody, a song with deep meaning, and lyrics that you can really relate too, or has humor. |
