The Passing of Friends.

Two plinths stand in a large courtyard, proud under an overcast sky. One is topped with a single crystal rose, the other with the crown of Athesia's King. Beside them are lined the great heroes of Athesia, dressed in whatever constitutes ceremonial dress for them. Some are robed in finery, others look fresh from battle, though perhaps cleaner.

At the head a little man shuffles forward, large dark eyes glistening slightly in the ambient grey.
His voice rings out in tune:

Another year has passed, my friends,
another foe brought to an end.
And though we must stand fast e'en so,
The cost of triumph still ascends.

Sage Marcellus to redress old wounds,
dealt out to save us all from doom,
was sacrificed by his own hand.
So nobly roses ever bloom.

King Kiya sounded clarion call,
and we have answered one and all,
to him we owe our every deed,
and he is lost to chaos' squall.

"Many have left us this year. Let us also bid farewell to Aurzel, Drako, and Malach. May their remaining days serve them well. And it is my fervent hope, as it is of us all, that the uncertainty surrounding the fate of Markus shall soon resolve itself in our favour. As the seasons turn, may we have better blessings to come."

is it not possible to mount a rescue attempt to save the soul of Kiya?

I don't see that it would do anything to help. Re-opening the rift may only cause more demons to swarm this plane and I believe that Kiya knew exactly what his sacrifice meant when he made it. I would but hope that he suffered little and knew how much we all respected him.

Perhaps we should discuss this later, after the funeral.

It is a sadness whenever any soul is Lost, I officially wish to offer the Empire's Condolences.

May these two Brave souls find peace in the great beyond and we thank them for their Sacrifices for the land and the plane, they suffered and Died so we may all be safe and they shall be honored eternally for that.

Arianna stepped forward. She looked somewhat stern but her features quickly softened as her eyes rested first on the crown, then on the rose.

"We lost a great leader at this past meeting of the council. The drow have taken from us something that we can never replace. But we can keep his dreams alive. And we will, aye?"

"As for the feychild..."

She stopped for a moment to let out a chuckle.

"A story, perhaps, if you will. One day a young dwarf lost her notebook. It was the most precious thing to her in the world, because her knowledge is what gives her her strength. But, strangely, she found that her lost book found her... Returning home it sat upon her desk as if it were never gone. But she wasn't just any silly little dwarf girl, she knew she hadn't left it there. She spent months trying to trace magic residue, to find out who had returned it to her. And when she found out she... Well, she couldn't quite believe it. The same man whom she'd found snooping in her library, the same eladrin that had pretty much poisoned her ale, and that she insulted regularly. But the things they both did... They did because they knew each other so well.Better than any friends."

"The dwarfling loved the feychild. But she never told anyone till it was too late...Even him."

She took a small brown book from her pocket and dropped it beside the rose.

"Marcellus was a seeker of knowledge... But he never read this one thesis;an incomplete compilation of the glyph magic Ive encountered. He would have known what to do with it far better than I. Maybe he'll read it someday. You hear that up there Feychild? Your last request to me was to consider teaching you the glyph magic passed to me by Onuris.Well you can learn it your bloody self!"

She smiled through tears as she walked away.

The mountain man stepped forward.

He stood for a moment before saying a few words.
"I never speak ill of the dead they have done their duty. These were great men in these lands, who have done much for this continent. I can do no more than respect the wishes that they laid down and so I hereby make a vow."

Dargan stood tall and placed a fist on his heart and a hand on his hammers' haft as is the form of the Mountain Oath when it is most solemnly sworn.

"I Dargan Drosilan of the Bhurrin tribe do swear, I will unite the continent of athesia, I accept the life goal of Kiya-battle brother. I will bring balance to the fey courts, I will redeem the brothers of Onuris should it be within my power, I accept the life goal of Marcellus-battle brother."

He crouched down and laid his hammer upon the graves each in turn and leaving on the ground before him as he straightened once more.

"When confronted with death my father would say 'Næðra ar dauðr. Dauðr ævi sut Valhalla. Vega dramæ hlægiligr; Cry not for the dead. They watch from Valhalla so fight that they may smile.' While they may not be in Valhalla I will fight that they might smile."

With that he took up his hammer once more and furrowed his brow, that the mountains resolve would not be marred by rain.

Stepping forward the lost scion of the Plains looked upon the monuments, grim of eye and harsh of bearing.
"This has been a most trying year" he says "we have lost the most knowledgeable among us and our leader, where we will go from hear I cannot say, but what I can say is this, both Marcellus and Kiya helped me adjust to this council, accept that we can all work together and understand that no matter our differences we MUST continue our mission. I salute you both Kiya and Marcellus may the Gods look kindly upon you both."

With those words he walked away grief etched into every feature.

To the side, near the shadows stands a silhouette of a man. Upon closer inspection, you see a robed figure, head bowed as if in prayer. Softly, as if falling upon the very rays of the sun come the sounds of a song in the language of the plains nobility:

"Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when we
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

But for now this road were on
Leads onwards under Pelors Sun.
The paths they took were noble ones,
From which we cannot turn and run."

He turns and speaks to you, in a manner which reminds you all for a moment of Francis, and when he speaks you realise that it is Santiago, not his father:

"Kiya had a vision, bold and brilliant as dawns first rays. It is right and just we follow that vision in the format that our consciences allow. He was a noble man, a fair and just king."

He pauses as if struggling for words. After a minute has passed he speaks:

"For a man such as I, the grace and beauty expressed within the world by the mere prescence of one of the fey children can often go unnoticed, Aye I had my problems with the man, but Marcellus' death was right, noble and just. He died to pay our debt, and allow Kiyas vision to continue. For that we can do nought but salute him."

At this moment, Santiago draws his sword, and stands proudly before the tombs. In a swift movement he grants both the heroes a formal, martial salute, in the manner of the plains, turns on one heel and marches off.

Havwarlen stepped forward with Tarveg at his side, her usual energetic demeanor now dampened, mimicking that of her friend. He stopped in front of Kiya's monument planting his spear in the ground and placing his helmet upon it.

"It may not have been a feat of arms but the founding of this unified kingdom has been the greatest thing I've witnessed. Though you may have perished the bonds you forged have paved the way for the mightiest pack Athesia has ever, or will ever see. The task remains incomplete, but I have no doubt our unity will see your grand project through to its completion. I always thought you would lead us there, but now I see it is our mission. I will bring this pack together, this I swear"

As he finished speaking Tarveg threw back her head and howled; her long mournful cry echoing across the city.

They then turned to the second monument as he did so he cracked a wry smile.
"You actually managed to die honourably, after your display I didn't think you had it in you. I guess you were really were full of surprises, Ha! maybe you still are. Regardless it was ultimately an honour to have fought beside you"

After that, the pair turned around and walked away Head shaking Havwarlen quietly muttered to himself smiling "even in death... still a ponce..."
