We were called to assist the dragonborn of Bahmaut by Sorma Lakhar, as a chasm had opened on the border of the Broken Lands and the Dark Plains had opened, revealing a strange tomb. On our initial entry, the corridor that lead further in had some writing that was carved into the stone; further investigation showed it to be carved into the stone with what we think was likely claw and talon (as opposed to traditional carving methods.) The language was not any currently known one, though with time we were able to translate it. (We have taken rubbings of these carvings, along with all the others we encountered.) It read as follows:- "not all things are equal the grey dragons were born mortal they withered and died". (Note that a lot of the entry wall was damaged, and so unreadable. The language also had no capitalisation or punctuation, only spacing, and so I'm replicating it as it was written.) On moving further into the tomb, we found a large circular chamber. The floor was tiled in a chessboard pattern with blank and cross-hatched (via the same carving method as the previous wall) small tiles, and circular depressions at the top; as people entered they found that some of the tiles were trapped, and on releasing the pressure plate the doors slammed closed and the circular depressions opened to release a number of creatures that appeared similar to raptors made of a combination of mechanical parts, stone and crystals. These pounced on people, shredded prone victims, breathed laser beams and exploded when they died. (We have brought back a number of fragments, though only one crystal remains intact; Aurzel currently has this since it seems to be a good power source and he can therefore use it. [Minor reward.]) Once the raptors were defeated, the doors opened, and we found a second inscription on the next corridor, as follows:- "the greys struggled against their short lives generations died fighting for their immortality they grew hateful of the true dragons" Moving down the corridor, we met a number of skeletal looking dragonborn, who informed us they were followers of Quetzacuan, the sacred lord that saved them. Their group leader was named Le Vent Du Nor. They did not understand the language inscribed in the tomb, though they said that their great priest might. They also informed us they were told to come to the tomb to remove an item that they had not yet found by Quetzacuan, and that they were sworn to secrecy about the item. Finally, we also found that they were enemies of Tiamat, and that they entered from underground (rather than our surface entrance). Once we finished talking, they continued in the direction that we had come from. On continuing, we came to a vertical shaft that cut across the corridor, along with a plaque in the tomb's language that translated to "one puzzle of dragons"; the shaft was not crossable thanks to the combination of an invisible barrier and strong winds that blew downwards as soon as anything entered the shaft. While we investigated the shaft, 3 followers of Tiamat stood at the other side, observing. Once the puzzle was solved, the shaft filled (leaving a crossroads), and the Right Hand Of Tiamat left, leaving us to his two "friends", Kurt and Zane (hydra warriors). Moving onwards, the corridor curved down into an almost circular room, that looked much like an amphitheatre. The arcane characters felt there was a massive wave of arcane energy that left a residual wave, while the divine characters saw a flash of a 5 headed dragon. Primal characters saw that the room was scoured of life, while martial characters saw the room was filled with statues of petrified raptors and dragonborn. It was while we were looking at this that Tacitus arrived, and we snuck closer, finding a single half petrified dragonborn of Tiamat (whose petrification was slowly growing.) Questioning told us that they had fought "these stupid things", at which point the Right Hand of Tiamat grew impatient and cast the seventh wave, causing the petrification. (From what we know, the seventh wave seems to be similar to the seven shields from the earlier encounter with the dragonborn surgeon and torturer last year, and is given from Tiamat.) As his final act, the dying dragonborn hit the large raptor that was petrified in the centre of the room, cracking the stone shell and awakening it. The larger raptor was similar to the smaller ones, but much more potent; while it did not pounce, it instead exploded every time it took damage as crystals broke off, plus a larger explosion on death. Since we killed it quickly, the only attack it managed to use was to breathe a large laser. (The statues were also destroyed as a result of the final explosion.) We have brought back fragments of the large raptor, but there were no sizable chunks that could prove functional this time. Moving onwards, we moved towards the sarcophagus room. At this point the skeletal dragonborn caught up, so we entered the corridor leading in together. A number of creatures in inset alcoves moved out as we entered and spoke in a language we could not understand; they appeared to be guardians, and were similar to large dragonborn who wore lizard skulls as helmets and wielded clubs with obsidian edges. Fortunately, the skeletal dragonborn knew the passphrase to allow them to let us pass, and so the guardians moved back into their alcoves and stone slabs slid over them with more writing, which translated as follows:- "a war was inevitable bloody and desperate everything in the plain was drawn in little survived with the lords of the sky" Once we entered the sarcophagus room, we found the Right Hand of Tiamat was already looking in the sarcophagus, while another dragonborn that we found was called the First Sword stood guard in front, who plunged one of his seven swords in the ground in front of him to summon a phantasmal dragon that we fought. Upon finishing the battle, both left vanishing in a swirl of multicoloured cloaks, carrying off a light in a jar of murky liquid. From the skeletal dragonborn, we learnt that the swords were the "unveiling"; should all seven be used at the same time, it seems likely that all of Athesia will be needed to fight them. Examining the chamber, we found a huge skeletal dragon inside the tomb, along with writing in Elven under a painted relief. The relief depicted a great number of flying grey dragons facing off against 7 lords of the sky, 'one as gold, one as thought, and five sisters of colour' and the world exploding as the mountains themselves seemed to march to battle. The inscription underneath read as follows:- "When Quetzacuan's bones were only cold Atlatoec wept blood. The forces of rising burnt in the heat and the mountains flew to war. Only Itzitzin laid aside and left a lurched warrior to skip, until a second founded unity could fight the hundred scaled and end the dragon war." From this, we found that the skeleton in the sarcophagus was likely that of Atlatoec, espescially since the skull had red lines running from the eyes etched into it. (This skull was given to Lifa [Major Reward.]) With the more immediate concerns passed, we also talked further to Sorma. Lifa learnt more about her heritage, while I found out that the dragonborn of Bahamut were unable to return home at this time, with newer dragonborn coming through further west and west in the Dead Wastes (with the original exit point being the south east corner.) However, their transit is infrequent and unreliable; currently the most notable group is Sorma's, which is a group of 30 sent to find out what is happening here. I have extended an invitation for the dragonborn of Bahamut to live in the lands of Theya when they come out, and have also suggested that when we settle and explore the Black Library that we work together (since they do have scholars amongst their number); both these have been received well. |
