The Army of Light RPG is a series of tactical role playing games developed to play on the computer by Mercenary of Light with the help of his friends and other members. The gameplay is based on strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, but with new characters and an original story that members of this forum create, develop and will later experience.

Hmm I guess I should explain what I'm doing first. I'm currently making a forum RPG which is run similar to AoL or the recently started Nordive RP. While both are excellent RP's. I decided to try my hand at making my own, one which actually uses stats. So in short I'm making a RP

However like most creators who attempts to create games, I'm stuck. And was wondering if I could receive some input from the lovely people here. Here's a list of current issues I'm having.

- Classes; I know alot of people like having choice, but I can't help but feel too many choices restricts enjoyment. Plus making sprites (The map ones) is a pain, and they usually don't fit into my grid so their legs get chopped.

So I've come up with two ideas.
1.I deal with the boredom and try making a class tree.
2.I leave classes to the players. Players choose a title and choose a sprite they want to use. This is easier, and stonger units can just have prefixes. (Using the contreversial Elementalist, An Elementalist would promote to a Great Elementalist/Elementalist Lord)

-Classes 2 (Magic Users)
How important do you think it is to have magic users? I want to keep the "stats" part of the game as simple as possible and present only have HP/Str/Def and Int (which effects exp you gain). If I were to add magic users I'd most likely have to complicate it with things like Resistance and Magical Damage.

1.I add MAG and RES and make the game more complex (The players calculate their own battles btw)
2.I ignore MAG and RES and assume they are the same as STR and DEF
3.I forget Magic-users, and only use weapons (Swords/Spears/Axes/Bows)

Any comments are appreciated.

Just as bonus information. The game will follow the RP style here. (You can kill enemies with 1 hit) However stats come into play on the enemies turn. And if you have horrible stats, you'll most likely be forced to retreat (not particpate any further in the map)

I think magic users are important, but that depends on the background story of the RPs. But is up to you to decide.

Hello Aya. It's my turn to help you. For magic how about this, Magic users and melee fighters share the same STR and DEF, but Melee fighters have only 1/2 DEf to magic and vice-versa. Keeps it nice and simple.

Hmm well I guess magic users are important in my setting then.... well not really, but I must admit they add variety.

Your idea sounded really good Saile, but ..... but nothing, I love it :D I've had a few ideas but all of them would over power mages so I scrapped all of them.

yeah anyway - As far as classes go, I think that the players choosing classes would be awesome - if used responsibly, so given our current members I say scrap it :P nah, I think it would work :)

Over time you can become Great super special awesome omega mega ultra fantastarific lord elementalist :D
Just cos I'm an angel doesn't mean I play by the rules ;)

Choosing classes is a ggod idea as long as you have us fill out a class outline like so.

Class name:

Weapon type used:

Is class physical or Magical: (Even if a phys weapon type is used people might be like a spellblade.)

Overworld sprite: (They ould have to pick from a picture)

Base stats and Growths: (You could do the same as AoL and give us limits. Like you have 25 points to put into base stats and 250% to put into stat growths)

Description of how the class fights in battle:

Strengths of the class:

Weaknesses of the class:

How about that?

Oh and don't worry, after the "Great Super Special" I'll strike the character down with lightning. So I won't have to type the title out. I can just type "Dead thing" :P

Hmm, as for the responsible thing, I'll just do what Saile did, and reject those that aren't reasonable.

Hmm nice form Saile. But if I do use the "free class" system I'll settle for

Sprite:

Weaknesses and strengths of a weapon a pre-determined (FE) and any other weaknesses are personal weaknesses (Ie can't swim)

Physical/Magical Wep is not really needed since, I don't want C1 using an iron sword, and C2 using a Flamberge.

Fighting Style again is based on the individual character, And that really has no impact on the gameplay anyway.

As for stats, that's character creation, not class/ranks:P

Regarless thank you (all three of you) for the input, I've pretty much made up my mind now, but you can still post if you want ;)

Bleh, it'll be ages before I get this up. I've actually been working on it before Nordive. But my laziness has resulted in about 10% being complete over this month, If I do get it finished, it'll probably be later November..... Geez I'm lazy xD
