The Army of Light RPG is a series of tactical role playing games developed to play on the computer by Mercenary of Light with the help of his friends and other members. The gameplay is based on strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, but with new characters and an original story that members of this forum create, develop and will later experience.

I know most of you are curious, anxious or just interested in knowing about the program I’m using for the RPG (and of how much work is currently done). Truth is I’m currently working with 2 programs at the same time. For now, I’ll call them Program 1 and Program 2. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, and work on both is delayed by school and my personal life. Why am I working on two instead of focusing on one? Because I got stuck on the coding of Program 1 and found Program 2 while l was previewing the other dozen game development programs on the web.

Basically, what I want you to do is look at the advantages/disadvantages of both programs and on the poll, select the one you think I should focus more on. Reply to the post with your answer and explain why you think that one is more important.


Program 1
This one works through the internet and it’s the one where I can do real coding. It’s almost limitless (for our small project) and allows more liberty in making something different and adding new things. What’s holding me back is that I have not found the code for allowing you to control more than one character and movement limit (making them motionless after moving; I can try and make that one up if I can find the other code). Right now the test game looks like Fire Emblem but it’s really a single-character RPG (or a monster slaughter).

Advantages:
-Allows me to do more than Program 2 as long as I make a code for it. It’s also easier to learn.
-Working through the internet means the game doesn’t take up space on your computer (although you do have to download the software, which is still an advantage for you).
- Allows the addition of multiplayer, as long as I implement the right codes correctly (I have to learn a lot before that).
-Has no number limitations (on characters, classes, items, etc.).
-I can add more skills and change rules and formulas (like making branched promotion, changing what stats affect, how skills activate, etc).

Disadvantages:
-You have to register at the site and download the software (not a real problem, but some might complain).
-I have no previous coding experience and I have yet to learn some important codes.
-Joining a game may take a few seconds or a few minutes (it’s usually fast, but it depends on the pc).
-Battle animations will be hard to add and not worth it.
-Cut-scenes will not be “elaborate,” mostly text.


Program 2
A program I recently got, meant for this type of game. The problems are its limitations to almost everything. Within the limitations, everything can be done with some time. The test game I made feels like Fire Emblem, but still doesn’t look like it.

Advantages:
-Few coding necessary.
-Allows battle animation scenes.
-Better cut-scenes.
-Built-in Load/Save buttons.

Disadvantages:
-You have to download each game, which means they take up space on your computer.
-Has limitations on number of characters (and classes), coding usable, etc.
-I’m not sure if some features common of FE games can be implemented.
-Has no probability of getting a multiplayer or a lot of new things.

The first one would use your download if you played online though. Can you remove the limetations from program two. Or could you just build the codes that program one has built in, into program two? <I'll vote when I am clear on this if you do not mind Merc.>

The first one needs you to register (free) and download some software (to play the game on when online), but not the game itself. Your progress in the game would be saved through your account.

I can not remove the limitations of program 2, and it has a different computer language than program 1. I could try to find ways around the limitations, but it would still be limited.

No, the RPG will be based on the forum RP. It will be a game as a reward for roleplaying here and as a way for others to see our creativity and originality (story and sprites).

Number one could get battle graphics, but it will be a lot more work and they won't turn out really good. Program 2 has obligatory battle scenes. Think of it this way, the choice comes down to what you value more in a game, gameplay or graphics?

And SN, your chapter (the one where we look for the corrupt leader) will be chapter 6 or 7, I think you have enough time to make it.

Hmmm. Well, how big is the difference in gameplay?

The difference in gameplay is that I can do almost whatever I want, and not just a normal strategy RPG.

You can start making a draft whe you have tiem and ideas, and then pm it to me.
