From www.armyofz.com Shy. Retiring. Reclusive. These are words that don't describe the seamingly everpresent John Barrowman. Some of us round here are big fans of the Doctor Who/Torchwood/Alive & Kicking star and don't grudge him his recent meteoric rise to success or his current domination of television in everything from drama to gameshows to musicals. Especially Hindsy who's been a big BarrowFan for a while now. So much so that she toddled along to the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall last week to see the man himself perform onstage in his UK tour. "Usually on a Thursday night I can be found at home with either a bottle of wine or a six pack of beers, pretending to watch TV while in fact playing either online games, or attempting to turn myself into the best fantasy Zoo Keeper the world has ever seen. This week however, I did something a little different. Captain Jack Harkness’s alter ego, the gorgeous John Barrowman was back in his home town to entertain a packed Concert Hall. With an audience which ranged from five year old kids to sixty year old grans, this was a superb night to remember. Known for his acting abilities, John is also a very accomplished singer, having started his career on stage. He has starred in numerous musicals and is now regularly seen on whichever Lloyd–Webber production is being advertised through the Beeb’s talent shows (yes Mr Spacey, I couldn’t agree with you more). In fact, Mr Barrowman himself took great delight in telling us he is now on the BBC from 6:05 right through until 9 on a Saturday night. Having received his CD as a Christmas present, I thought I knew what I was in for when going to see him live. How wrong was I? Yes, he is gorgeous in real life (more so actually than on TV), yes he has a voice that could melt butter, and yes he can entertain. But, it was so much more than that. To start the show laughing, I found myself surprised that I was in tears by the end. This show tells a story, and the story of John Barrowman’s life is one which takes you on a rollercoaster ride. Hearing him perform a song he sang to aunts as a six year old child had us all laughing out loud. To then hear one which he sings in memory of his sister in law who died of brain cancer, leaving behind 3 kids who had also lost their father a few months before had everyone reaching for tissues. But, the climax of the night, for both audience and John himself, would have to be the duet he sang with his unsuspecting mother. At 73 years old, Mrs Barrowman has spent her whole life with one dream – to be able to sing on stage to an audience. So, John gave his mother this chance, and fulfilled her dream. He cried, she cried, we all cried. He may not be everyone’s ideal entertainer. He is who he is, and doesn’t pretend to be anyone else. This is the first time I’ve ever gone to a concert and come away feeling as if I’d been the only person in the room. To be made to feel a part of the show, to feel like you’d just been given a very personal insight into this man’s life is a privilege. My only hope is he doesn’t leave it too long before coming back home." |
