Oh come on, with a name like mine did you really not expect me to flag this one up? Yup, classic time travel show Doctor Who (or Doctor Sexy as Hindsy calls him in his current incarnation) returns this weekend (BBC1, Saturday 6:50pm) for its fourth new series since the BBC attached electrodes to the rotting corpse of the once-cancelled programme and threw buckets of money at it in the hope that it would live again. And live again it did to become the Beeb’s flagship show and a regular Saturday night fixture for millions of viewers.
It’s sadly suffered from varying dips in quality since its regeneration (farting aliens, burping wheelie bins…) and this upcoming series might be no different. We’ve been rather concerned that it’s taking a massive nosedive down the toilet since the announcement that the lovely Martha (Freema Agyeman) from series 3 was being replaced with mouthy, lowest-common-denominator comedy actress Catherine Tate as the companion. Her performance in a previous Christmas Special was pretty intolerable enough – but a whole thirteen episodes? Hmm, we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out as we watch the Doctor travel to new alien planets, visit Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius, meet Agatha Christie and battle classic series villains The Sontarans once again. The big news on the radar is that this year will very possibly see the long-awaited resurrection of Dalek creator Davros in the series customary overblown finale. And we can console ourselves with the knowledge that Martha will return for a few episodes along with the always wonderful John Barrowman as Torchwood’s horny Captain Jack Harkness. First episode was atrocious. Quite possibly the worst episode of Who ever. And there's been quite a few!
Just badly written, childish, brain numbing crapness for 45 minutes performed by unconvincing actors fighting a stupid monster that belongs on CBeebies.
I could write a longer review but it would involve lots and lots of swearing and eventually end in me throwing my laptop across the room...

Yup the opening show of the new season was absolutely garbage. Very disappointing, especially when it was written by Russell T. Davies himself. Why do they toss in episodes like that? What's the point? These supposed "comedic" type episodes have no place.
Give us more dark, sinister plotlines.

Bring back the Green Death and The Sea Devils I say !
Can't wait for the Sontarans to return. That's what we're talking about.
"There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there."

The words "By Russell T. Davies" after an episode title now fills me with dread. While he's written the odd good episode (Tooth and Claw, Parting of the Ways) he's responsible for some of the worst episodes of the news series. And he's a self aggrandising windbag blinded by celebrity culture and his own outlook on what the series should be. I'm hoping the rumours are true and he's planning on leaving Doctor Who to continue elsewhere his crusade to get more scenes of men snogging on mainstream TV...

And while we're on classic villains - bring back Sutekh and the Raston Warrior Robot!

I have to confess I did'nt see much of the last series, as I got a bit cheesed off with the way the series was developing. I thought the new Cybermen just looked stupid. The way they showed the origin of the cybermen bears no correlation to to the plotlines in the orignal series. Also this Human / Dalek hybrid business is just cobblers. Thought the "Emperor" Dalek was a pretty cool idea however.
I'll give the new series a run though. It should improve. Can't be any worse than Saturday's "Raquel" from Coronation Street arsing about with a bunch of CGI fat alien babies.

Not the worst episode but not far off, think they have tried to make it too kiddy friendly. I always remember being fairly scared of Doctor Who as a kid.

Now I have a three year old running around the house declaring he's a little fat thing. Somehow I feel they have lost the plot a little.
