It's probably one of the best written comedy films ever made if not THE best in my opinion. On a trip to the Lake District recently I stopped in Penrith but was unfortunately unable to visit any of the locations despite my girlfriends suggestion of "let's find that tearoom" referring to the one in the movie frequented by old biddies and gatecrashed by Withnail and the eponymous "I" after a drinking binge. When I got home I watched the documentary on the DVD that follows the attempts of two fans to visit the major locations used in the film, including the sadly now derelict (and full of old beer cans) cottage in Shap. So I was surprised to see in the paper today that Uncle Monty's "horrible little shack" is actually up for sale! With a guide price of £145,000 it's up for auction next month. If I had the money I'd buy the bastard and have it renovated to it's former glory! Hopefully a fan will buy it and do this piece of film history some justice.
