Kyoshi had heard of Zera’s friend Zamia. After much prodding and poking, he had finally gotten her whereabouts from the young boy. He wanted to meet her. Any friend of Zera’s would be a friend to Kyoshi. He had found out that she was staying at a tavern in the city proper. He wished he could bring her back to the manor, but it was too risky. It wasn’t his manor, and the Schtauffen family might get concerned about the amount of Branded he was bringing in. He hoped to acquire the manor from them, and when he did he would bring the girl to live with him, Zera, and Nostus. Hopefully it would be soon. The foreign noble was wearing his normal outfit, albeit in less expensive clothing, he was going to a poorer section of town and did not wish to have to hurt a mugger who tried to steal from him. Kyoshi was alone; he had left the manor under the guise of business, business in setting up a dojo in the city to help him start to earn money. While in fact he had found the place he wanted, and would eventually set the dojo up there, now he just needed to draw students in. In reality, he was going to a tavern to meet the girl. Kyoshi arrived to the town on foot, the manor wasn’t far enough away to require a horse, and Kyoshi didn’t trust the beasts anyways, he preferred walking when travelling. When he entered the city he began wandering around the city until he found the tavern he was looking for. After a little while of wandering, Kyoshi was able to find it, it was in a poorer section of town, but that didn’t bother Kyoshi any, the poor were no worse or better than he was, they were people, just as he was after all. The samurai walked into the tavern and looked around; as if he would recognize the girl he came to see. He didn’t, there were too many people in here, which surprised Kyoshi, so many people in a tavern when it was midday. Kyoshi decided to sit at the bar, and order ale. While he was here he might as well enjoy a drink. Looking around some more, Kyoshi spotted the girl he was here to meet, waving at her and motioning for her to come join him. Zamia didn’t notice as Kyoshi entered the bar or when he gestured for her to come over. She had more pressing matters. Zamia sat in her seat and stared across the table at the man who’d been harassing her. He wasn’t very big considering his age, only around 5,6 or so, though that was still half a foot over her own height. “Come on, I’m telling you it’ll be fun.” He told her with a stupid grin. Zamia leaned back in her chair and regarded the man coldly. “And I’m telling you no. Get out of my face, NOW.” She replied with a glare. The man’s smile faltered at the rejection and he looked around as if too see if anyone had overhear d her. Apparently he wasn’t expecting a rejection. “ Listen , I was being nice. Come with me nicely or I stop.” He said with a sneer. Zamia glared at the man and leaned lightly across the table towards him. “Listen, I don’t care what you have to say, I don’t know you and I sure as hell don’t want to, so get the hell out of my face before you get hurt buddy. “ She told him with a sweet smile and an icy lookin her eyes. The dumbass lost it. “ You Bitch!!” He yelled as he stood, dramatically knocking the table aside and leaving her sitting there in her chair. He lumbered forward but she stood and took a step towards him, dodging as he punched towards her head and jabbing at his eyes, hitting one of them and causing him to backpeddle and howl in pain. She didn’t give him a chance to recover and as he looked around for her she jumped on his back, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and holding on as hard as she could. He thrashed for a few moments before the lack of oxygen set in and he stopped struggling , falling to the floor unconscious. She hit him in the head to make sure he was really down. She let out a breath before looking around at the other patrons , many of whom were watching her with wide eyes. “What, you got a problem? If you’ve got enough time to glare at me get this moron out of here.” She said giving the man another kick to the gut. She looked around and noticed a man who stood out, He was fairly average but his clothes obviously set him apart from others in the bar, that and he was still watching her. She slowly walked over and sat on the barstool next to him. “ You must be Zera’s friend.” She said nonchalantly to the man as she looked him over. |

Kyoshi watched the scene with interest. He was ready to intervene if needed, but it didn’t seem he needed to. So, he stayed in his seat and sipped his ale; his hand was still resting on his jian and was ready to jump in if needed however. Before he could even finish his drink though, the girl had taken the man down and was victorious. Kyoshi clapped excitedly for a moment before realizing he was alone and acting foolish before he put his hands down and watched the girl walk over to him, acting like nothing had happened. “Why yes, I am. The name’s Kyoshi.” Kyoshi had arranged this meeting and was glad to finally meet this girl. The girl who had Zera blush when mentioning, and speak of with respect at the same moment. “Zera thinks highly of you my young acquaintance. Would you like a drink?” Kyoshi motioned for the bartender and got another drink and slid it over to the girl before she could answer. Before anything else could happen, two guards walked into the bar. “We’ve heard reports that a girl attacked a man and took him to the ground out of insane cold blood.” The two guards began looking around the room, and everyone averted their gaze, staring into their glasses and a silence permeated the room. Kyoshi however stood up, smiling. “Evening good sirs, I am Sabaku Kyoshi. I saw the whole event transpire. This lady was merely protecting her body and honor. The man over there is the one who assaulted her.” The two guards looked at Kyoshi, they didn’t know he was noble, just foreign, and they began to laugh. “We don’t care what he did, she took this man down; she’s coming with us.” “Sirs, I don’t believe I can let you do that. By the right of my noble birth and the backing of the Schtauffen family you will not arrest this woman, and you will leave.” With that, Kyoshi turned to Zamia and motioned to her, “Come on, we’re leaving this bar.” Looking back at the guards, “Do believe your superiors will be hearing from me, the lack of justice you are displaying is unbecoming of a guardsman.” |

Zamia shook her head as Koyshi clapped and gave him a steady stare as he offered her a drink before mentioning Zera. The guards entered and spoke up and for a moment it seemed as if the question would go un-answered......until Zera's friend stood up and pointed her out. She sat tensed , waiting for the guards reaction. They seemed confused a bit by Kyoshi's threat , not sure if they should take it seriously or continue arresting her. She stood and followed the man outside the tavern leaving her untouched drink at the bar. As soon as they were out of sight of the guards Zamia shook her head and looked Kyoshi over again before sighing. "You are DEFINITELY not from around here. " She said in exasperation. " Listen, you need to know some things now because acting like that all the time might convince some you're a noble but one of these times someone's going to just take you down. First, you can't go around telling guards not to arrest random peasents, it looks suspiscious, espescially to other aristocracy. Second, Don't implicate people. What happened back there was normal, i'm a girl and we don't have alot of rights around here, but if you had of kept your mouth shut i doubt anyone else would've felt the obligation to tell them it was me who knocked the guy out just because guards tend to abuse their power and common people don't like them." She paused for a second before looking Kyoshi over and taking in his outfit. " And if you're going to mix with peasents, make your self look like a peasent. simple pants, belt and shirt, nothing more. Like i said others will get suspiscious if a noble's spending time with us simple folk" she said with dry sarcsm leaning up against a wooden barrel before stretching and looking giving him a more relaxed look. " Anyway nice to meet you. Zera didn't mention you were coming. Any particular reason for it?" She asked, her thoughts heading down the darker possibilites but not jumping to any conclusions. |

Kyoshi felt bad, it seemed he had made Zamia mad and had done the wrong thing. He had thought he was doing the right thing, and the injustices of this country were numerous, the list only growing longer the more he lived here and the more of the area he saw. In his country women had more rights, at least involving their honor. When she started talking about clothing Kyoshi began to nod his head; he guessed it was time to get clothing that fit more in with the country he was in. He was an Aleian now, and it was time he began to dress like one. His past was behind him; it was time to embrace the present and future, the one that involved Zera and his plan for freedom. “Well I’m sorry miss, thought I was doing the right thing, that’s how we did things in my old country, well maybe not.” Kyoshi put a cheesy smile on his face and scratched his head, “I actually never have done this noble thing before; I lived in a temple my whole life serving Galatea and training in the martial arts. My older brother did the nobility business.” With that confession of his chest Kyoshi looked down at his clothing, he did appear as a sore thumb here, men didn’t wear skirts here, or any of the clothing he was used to. “Well perhaps you could help me pick out some better clothes. I am due for an outfit redo, shouldn’t be stuck in the past so much.” Kyoshi smiled at the girl until she asked why he was here, and then began to smile even larger, grinning from ear to ear. “Why I wanted to meet you, that’s all. Any friend of Zera is a friend of mine. We should talk more about that somewhere more private though. I never caught your name madam, what is it?” Kyoshi extended his hand to the girl in front of him as if to say come let us walk somewhere. On his face was a reassuring smile that was saying don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe. |

“Zamia" She told him as she looked at him, unimpressed. She didn't find the smile reassuring or comforting at all. She didn't WANT safety. She couldn't deal with the boring repetition the quiet life ensued, that was why she had decided to go with Zera. "Follow me." She said as she walked off, her tone impatient. In only a couple minutes she walked to the nearest tailor and was looking at his samples grabbing a pair of black leather pants and a cloth shirt and through them to Kyoshi as soon as he stepped in the door much to the tailors’ dismay. “Miss, those aren't for sale, please if you want to buy som-" "Don't worry about it, I’m sure it'd be easy for you to make a new pair and this man will pay you" She said looking towards Kyoshi “Won’t you?" She asked. The flustered tailor walked off, leaving the door to his living quarters open to make sure they didn't run off with any of his wares as he grabbed a glass and poured some beer from a barrel. “Try those on and make sure they fit, if they do let’s pay for them and get out of here. I was staying at that tavern but I’m probably not all that welcome there now so I need a new place to sleep." She told him, a mild amount of irritation in her voice. For as naive as this guy was he might as well be a full blooded noble, not that she hated him or anything, even if he was being a pain in the ass at the moment. Oh well, he was a friend of Zera's. Quickly she checked to make sure the tailor was fully occupied with his drink. He was. "And one more thing, I don't need defending. I've lived in a barren desert full of the worst thugs you can imagine and worse before I escaped there." She told him, pulling the glass knife from the hidden strap on her leg and holding it out towards him. "IF ANYONE tries anything with me I won't hesitate to kill them. The only reason the guy in the bar is still breathing was the fact i don't particularly feel like running to avoid another branding. I've killed before and I’ll do it again without any regret if I have to. Now hurry up." She told him looking expectantly from the clothing to him. |

Kyoshi followd Zamia into the tailor’s shop and nodded his head apologetically at the man as Zamia grabbed clothing and began to throw it around. She did not seem like she was happy, and Kyoshi began to wonder, had he done something wrong? It didn’t matter now, if he had it was in the past and he couldn’t change it. When he had a full set of clothing, Kyoshi walked into a small dressing room and tried them on, they fit well enough. They felt weird compared to what he was used to wearing, but that didn’t mean they were too small, just a different style. He walked out with the clothing still on, and approached Zamia, “Can’t hurt to have someone help watch your back Zamia, don’t be so cold. Life is beautiful after all; we’re only given one chance to enjoy it.” With that, Kyoshi walked up to the tailor and pulled out some mina and handed it to the man. "That should be enough right?” The tailor nodded and Kyoshi bowed, “Thank you sir, have a good day.” With that, Kyoshi turned and began to walk out of the shop. He was now dressed in a pair of black pants and a white tunic with a black belt tied over the tunic. His jian was shoved into the belt and was easily reached, well by the gods he looked like a normal person from this country now. “How do I look Zamia? Do I still look like a foreign noble?” Kyoshi began to test out the clothing, it allowed just as much movement as his previous clothing, and he was beginning to like the way it fit, it was comfortable that was true. He could start wearing clothing like this all the time; it was time for him to give up on his old life after all. “Now back to what you were saying, sure you don’t need defending, sure you are miss killer when needed. Honestly that doesn’t mean anything. You can still use friends, and that is what I am offering. Besides, any moron can kill, it takes a truly enlightened person to not kill unless absolutely necessary. Do you know when it is necessary? Because I still don’t. I’m not the gods.” |

Zamia bit her tongue as Kyoshi returned in his new clothing, biting back the comment so hard her tongue nearly bled. Life was not always beautiful. He lived in a temple his entire life while the rest of his family was apparently nobility, even if that didn't extend to he himself. He knew nothing. He didn't know what it was like to spend every waking moment in fear your life was going to be ended by a rapist, a murder, a lunatic, all the things that criminals in Nowhere were. Nearly two weeks ago all of her friends had died and she nearly with them.....she was still debating if it would've been better that way. Kyoshi paid the man and the two of them left the shop. As they walked the man continued to chatter, asking about the outfit before he said something that made her snap." Don't you dare. Don't you lecture me about necessities and gods. Up until weeks ago I had friends, I had good friends.....and you know where they are now? They're all dead!! They're all fucking dead!! You talk about necessary? Do you think it's necessary to kill when a psychotic murderer just stabbed your best friend into the stomach with a rusty nail and is trying to do the same to you? Is it NECESSARY when a group of rapists are attacking you? Where the hell are your gods when this happened huh!?!?" She asked him , nearly screaming at him. " You don't know what it's like to be stuck in a box with no food, no water and weather that'll kill you if you step outside. You don't know what it's like to have the freaks that go bump in the night sneak up on you as a little kid , so don't fucking talk to me about enlightenment and gods!!" She yelled, her eyes cold as she gave him a glare. She stared at the man a moment before turning and walking away. She'd been wrong. He was just like a noble. He didn't know anything and he did whatever he wanted . He was perfect for the role......He was just as bad as the rest of them. She walked until she was on the edge of the town and sat down against a large tree, closing her eyes. |

Kyoshi sat there silently as she yelled at him. Obviously she had issues with her past that she hadn’t resolved yet. Understandable since it only ended so shortly ago. He said nothing and let her walk off, but followed her. She had made a compelling point, he did not know what it was like in Nowhere, thank the gods, but he did know death, he did know regret. He watched her sit next to a large tree and he stood back for a moment, thinking. She was still in the balance, perhaps he could have her see where he was coming from, perhaps he couldn’t, but by the gods he was going to try. “You know, Zamia, you made quite the point back there.” Squatting in front of her, his face was devoid of any emotion, “You’re right, I don’t know what it’s like, and I don’t know when it is necessary to kill, each person must make that judgment call themselves when the moment arrives for them. No one else can make it for them. However, how much better than the psychotic murderer are you if you kill with no regret of stealing a person’s life? Even the most evil are given life for a reason no?” Kyoshi leaned back and fell onto his butt, pulling his legs underneath him, “Even if you don’t buy into the gods, you must believe that goodness and evil exists. Evil is wrong, yes, but are we worthy of judging others? Perhaps our perception of them is wrong? Certain people are evil beyond belief, and most likely belong dead. All I’m saying is can you rest easy with yourself knowing that you have taken another person’s life? Because I cannot, every night I see the faces of those who I have killed, every night I experience the pain of their deaths magnified by the sins of my soul.” |

Zamia stared at Kyoshi coldly and held up her right arm, light white scars dotted the tanned skin from her shoulder to the back of her palm with the most intense on her bicep and hand. " Do we have a right to judge? Isn't judging what all people do? If i hadn't cut the brands out of my arm then people would treat me like garbage, like i wasn't even human. Do they have a right to judge?" "She asked, visibly shaking with rage. " We aren't given life for anymore reason then any thing else is. Thinking humans are special because we're smart is a fools way of thinking. If a man plans to take me off out of a tavern of crowded people so he can RAPE ME then I wouldn't feel a damn ounce of regret in cutting his throat." She told him coldly. "You want to know what I see every night? Not the faces twisted in pain of the people i've killed, i'm to kind for that to make them suffer. No, i see my friends who were killed next to me while we slept, I see my friends who died to get me over the wall and I see that forsaken pit they put us all in." She told him as she stood and glared down at him. " In the hour i've known you you made me lose my lodging, angered the guards in a manner that they won 't leave me alone until they pay me back, and marked me as suspicious to everyone in this town for being specially associated with a noble. All in all you've only wasted about a week and a half's work and supplies." She told him nearing him and pushing him over with her leg before drawing her knife and slamming it into the ground next to his head. "This might be all fun and games for you, but this is my LIFE!! The only reason i'm not dead is so i can get back at the bastards who screwed me over. If you get in my way you'll wish you hadn't." She told him with menace as she pulled the glass out of the dirt and started back towards the town. "Come on.I need to get some water before I move and i'm not waiting for you. Keep up or stay here, either way don't slow me down." She told him contemptuously. Naive he was and born to play the noble for sure. It was for that reason she couldn't help but hate the man.... |
