Sabaku stood there with interest as the boy began to talk again. He was quite intelligent for his age, wise as well. He knew the workings of the world better than some old men, and Sabaku respected that. When the boy finished talking, an idea in the samurai’s head clicked. It was brilliant. Who would argue with him adopting one such as this? This boy appeared as a noble. His face and skin screamed nobility as if he should be wearing silk clothing and be prancing on a horse around town with a handkerchief held to his nose to protect his delicate senses. However he wasn’t. He was a peasant, Sabaku could change that. “Zera, I have a plan, you need a teacher. We will fetch your brother and you two will come live with me. I will say that I found you, you are foreign as well. You escaped from Falir without your family and I, in a feeling of pity for another lost noble like myself took you in. Your brother will be your ‘servant’. There is one man that lives with me, Raphael. He is a good man, and you will come to enjoy his company I’m sure.” Sabaku paused for a moment, letting what he said sink in before continuing. “Raphael and I will teach you to be a noble. Hell, you will become a noble by how it should be, by talent, skill, and your ideas. Not by lineage as it is done. In my country, one can gain nobility by proving their worth as a samurai. You will do the same. You have proven your worth to me as a person. I want you to become Sabaku Zera. Or Zera Sabaku since your people put the clan name after the given name.” |

Zera stumbled backwards and shook his head. "I... I don't know about this..." He said, looking away. He hated the nobility, he hated them so much. He was afraid what would happen if he lived like one. He couldn't fathom himself being corrupted by their lifestyle. He didn't want to fall into the lap of luxury and forget his true purpose. He... "I don't want my brother as a servant... he's my brother." He said, his eyes narrowed. He gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. "I..." The idea was so tempting though. It was perfect. He could learn from these people by day, study them, become part of the aristocracy, gain access to all those resources, people, information, and then use them against the kingdoms. The three kingdoms were falling apart as it was, who would notice his subtle actions. Zera sat down. "I need to think about it..." He said. "There's someone else I'm with..." Zamia, what about her? She needed a place to stay as well, and he doubted this man could do much for her. She was far too wild for the nobility. She... she would be his eyes, his ears and his hand in the world as he developed himself. His silent guardian. He'd talk to her about it, but he was sure she would agree. What an opportunity. He could take better care of her, feed her, clothe her, he knew she wouldn't accept lavish things but he would give her what he could. "I will not go by Zera." He said. "Hawk. That will be my given name." He said, his eyes cold. Zera didn't know very much about the ancients, he didn't know much about religion. However his grandfather knew quite a bit about the occult, the old tongue in particular. Zera was given his name by his grandfather. It was a Vicious name. It meant simply. 'A man who preys upon the weak, or Hawk.' Zera smirked. Such a strange name for a foreign noble. It worked perfectly. |

Kyoshi smiled, no longer would he go by Sabaku, for there was now another now. There was Sabaku Hawk. The samurai knew the pain the young boy must feel for having to see his brother as a servant, even if it was a front in front of others. He knew that Raphael would come around to the idea, if not well, Kyoshi could always acquire a new place of residency. It would be simple; he had no belongings he needed to bring with him. “I know the pain of having to pretend your brother is a servant of yours will be difficult for you young one. But it is something we must do, we cannot have our cover blown, and it will only be in the eyes of the public. In the manor we will be able to act as we normally act. I will work on acquiring us our own place instead of a house owned by another noble family. Then we can bring the other you are with, and others who join your cause.” Kyoshi began to pace, he was thinking. There were so many things that would have to go off for this plan to work. First the two would need to get to the city to get Zera’s brother, then the trio would have to get back to the manor and tell Raphael, they wouldn’t reveal it all to the man yet. Kyoshi was sure that the man would soon come to see the things in their light, and join them in their mission. That would be a long term project that Kyoshi would take upon himself. Also, he would need to plan building a manor for them to live in, living a lie like this in the house of the Schtauffen family would not be wise. “Zera, we need to go get your brother, and gather any things you want to move with you. First we should go back to the manor and get a carriage to carry us all and make the travel quicker. Are you ready to begin your false life as Sabaku Hawk?” |

"Sabaku Hawk..." Zera said, repeating it a few times, letting the words flow over his tongue. He smirked and looked at the man, there was a look in Zera's eyes. A look of determination, fire, it was something that burned inside of him with a fury unlike any normal human being. Zera had never thought he was special, he never thought he was any different than any other human. He had two hands, two feet, two eyes, one mouth. His heart beat and his muscles flexed. He was ambitious. That's all it was. He laughed to himself. Sometimes he wondered if he wasn't some kind of freak. A false life. That's what he'd be living. He'd be living a lie, a living lie, a breathing lie. His name would be a lie. Everything about him would be a lie. His hands would become dirty, he'd get blood on his hands, he'd bathe his hands in blood before it was over. Before he finally reached the end of his road. He would fight, suffer and cry before it was all over. He smirked. He wouldn't mind. This is how he wanted it, nothing good came without sacrifice. He closed his eyes and said a small prayer, not to the gods. It was more a mantra, his personal mantra, one that he clung to for dear life. It was his way of life. He said it in a low voice, resting his palm on his chest, quiet enough that hopefully Kyoshi wouldn't hear it all. "For good or ill, even if I become the Void itself... I will change this world..." He whispered. He looked up at Kyoshi. "I'm ready." |

Kyoshi couldn’t hear his mumbling, just knew that he was talking, and he ignored it. The boy would have his secrets, Kyoshi was fine with that. However he hoped that in his quest for freedom from the nobility he did not fall. Kyoshi would help him, aid him however he could. He would become an older brother for this young boy, hopefully shape him into a hero that will save the world, and not a villain that destroys it. “Now then, come young one, we must go introduce you to Raphael. Don’t worry, he isn’t far from here. Remember, you’re a child from Omeca and you were the only one of your family able to escape the sealing of the kingdom. I’m adopting you so you have a home, and your brother is your ‘servant’ who escaped with you. We’ll hide his brand like I have hidden mine if needed.” The two were walking when suddenly Kyoshi realized a flaw. They couldn’t go get a carriage first or their lie would fall through. He stopped and turned to Hawk. “We have to get your brother first or else our lie will be seen straight through.” With that, Kyoshi turned to head down the path towards the city, “Keep up if you can Hawk!” He smiled, even if they were planning something to change the world, Kyoshi planned to allow the boy to have a childhood, and who didn’t like to run? |

Zera thought about it a moment. That made sense, for the most part. He hadn't considered the possibilities of their lie falling through. He nodded as Kyoshi repeated his background. It all made sense. Zera ran his fingers through his hair, pulling it back a bit. He tore a leather strap off of his satchel on his hip, wrapping it around his hair and making it into a ponytail. Getting it out of his eyes. His eyes were narrow, intense, the blue was almost unnatural. His golden blonde hair was thick and wavy. He was toned, almost to the point of being heavily built. He smirked. He could easily pass as a noble. He looked at his reflection in the mud. He heard Kyoshi shout. Zera spun, watching Kyoshi break off running. He smirked. "Oh yeah?!" He called, he felt his heart soar and took off running. The heavy blade still on his back. He ran nearly every day with this on his back. He knew he was fast. He grinned and charged after his new 'big brother'. The two arrived at the gates of the city. The gates loomed heavily in front of them. Two guards immediately scrambled to open the doors for the approaching noble and his charge. Zera walked close to Kyoshi, with a relaxed, confident step. He needed to make sure that they assumed the two were in the same group. Luckily they did. Zera then turned to Kyoshi. "Its this way, on main street." He said, pointing down the wide road. Several blocks down there was a sign that said simply 'Butcher'. "Thats it." He said, and started to walk. |

Kyoshi and Zera raced to the city, and Kyoshi laughed the entire way. He looked over and noticed Zera was smiling as well. This made Kyoshi happy, for even if they were going to change the world, today, he was still a child, and Kyoshi wanted him to enjoy that childhood. When the two reached the city, Kyoshi slowed to a walk and put on the most noble of airs he could. He was glad to see the boy was able to as well. No matter if the boy wanted to admit it or not, he was not acting a noble, he was a noble. When Zera pointed out the building to him, Kyoshi smiled and walked inside, no one was at the counter, but he could hear voices coming from the back. Well a voice, of an old man yelling at someone. Kyoshi knocked on the wall to alert the old man to his presence, and when he arrived, Kyoshi asked, “Who was that you were yelling at Master Butcher?” “Oh, it was a nobody sir noble, just a Branded.” Before the old man could talk anymore Kyoshi interrupted him by raising a hand. “I would like to see this Branded.” With that, the old butcher ran into the back and returned with the young Branded boy. “Here he is sir. Now can I help you any today?” The old butcher was obviously terrified, he must not be used to having nobility in his shop, and Kyoshi merely smiled at him. Then Kyoshi looked down at the boy, squatting and sizing him up. “Young one, would you like to come with me and your brother, leave this place?” The boy nodded meekly and Kyoshi smiled again, “I thought so.” Kyoshi stood back up, and looked over at the old butcher, “Your grandson and this boy are coming with me, do you wish to oppose my will?” Kyoshi’s hand was resting on the hilt of his sword, waiting for an answer and exuding the subtle threat that he was ready to kill. |

Zera watched the exchange with wide eyes. He didn't know exactly what to say. Though his grandfather sure as hell did. The old man, fat, peach faced and bald waddled over to Zera and looked him square in the eye. "What witchcraft did you spin on this poor gentleman you worthless dog?" He spat, spittle flying all over Zera's face. Zera felt the fury rising in him. His eyes narrowed. He took a few calming breaths. "I did no such thing, Devall..." He hissed, taking a step forward. Devall took a waddle back, snarling. "You two boys are my property! You will go nowhere!" He shrieked, slapping his grubby palm on the counter behind him, reaching for his butcher knife. Zera's eyes flicked up toward Kyoshi and then down at his brother. Nostus had already moved behind Zera's new friend. Zera frowned at Devall. "Put it down." Zera ordered. Taking another step forward. Devall's eyes were wide and panicked, something wasn't right here. The man brandished the meatcleaver at Zera. "Get back hellspawn! I'll KILL you!" He shrieked again, taking a step back. Zera blinked. "The void is wrong with you?" Zera asked, not concerned, more confused. Nostus took a step forward and Zera raised a hand. Zera glanced over at Kyoshi. "Lets just go..." He said, turning away. "YOU WILL NOT GO!" Devall shrieked at the top of his lungs and rushed Zera. Zera span, eyes wide with fury. He opened his mouth, a bright luminescence coming from his eyes as he shouted at the man who had made his entire childhood a living hell. "Just. Drop. DEAD Already!" He shouted, the luminescence visible only to Devall and Kyoshi. Devall shrieked again. "WITC-" He began before he brought the blade end of his knife to his own throat, blood sprayed on Zera's face. Zera stood as the man fell to the ground, holding a knife to his own neck. Zera blinked, holding his hands up and looking at the blood. "What did I..." He stammered. "W-what..." His body shaking. |

Kyoshi sat in silence as the old man started yelling at the boy. When the man picked up the cleaver, Kyoshi had his sword drawn and ready to use if the man tried anything on either of the boys. He was a better swordsman and in better shape than this old man, there was no way either would be hurt by this evil man that treated the boys as if they were objects to own instead of people that felt and deserved a life of their own. However, Kyoshi did not have to use his weapon. He did not have to, after a glowing from Zera’s eyes, the old man committed suicide. Kyoshi was suddenly fully alert. It appeared that Zera had used some magic on the old man to kill himself, and if that were true he was wary. It would have been a dishonorable thing for Zera to do. Perhaps the man deserved to die, but not by mind controlled suicide. Kyoshi sheathed his weapon, there was no need for it to be out any longer, he would not hurt either of these two boys. Kyoshi knew he would have to talk to the boy about this. He was probably traumatized, especially if it was an unconscious act and not willing. He would be gentle about it. “Zera, did you cause that?” Kyoshi’s mind suddenly entered into planning. The three would need to leave this place. It would not look good for them to be seen at the scene of a suicide. Especially when one was a known Branded and another was a hidden Branded. More importantly though, was the young teen beside him. Kyoshi did not believe that it was a conscious act of Zera’s to cause his grandfather to kill himself, and therefore knew that the boy was going through some terrible and traumatizing things. A person’s first kill would haunt that person for the rest of their life. Especially when it was something as violent and emotion filled as this was. He pitied the boy, but knew that they needed to leave. “Zera, you need to get a hooded cloak and we need to leave this place now. Try to clean yourself off as much as possible.” Edited by Max, Jun 1 2010, 10:47 PM.

Zera stared at his blood soaked hands. He felt a throbbing in his skull, his heart pounded, his body ached. His knees shook. He glanced over at his brother and at Kyoshi. His body trembling. He looked back down at the corpse. "N-no... I didn't..." He started. "Thats impossible..." He managed in his stupor. He closed his eyes and shook his head, trying to fight out of this dream. It was a dream right? He opened his eyes and looked down at the corpse. No, it was real, it was so real. Zera dropped to his knees and threw up. Coughing and spluttering. He gripped at the floor, his eyes burning with tears. He had killed someone. It didn't matter how it looked, he had ordered it. At Kyoshi's order Zera stumbled back up to his feet and looked at the man helplessly. He had never felt so broken in his entire life. He hated Devall, he hated him so much. He had considered killing him. This was... this was... he had never actually killed someone. Never. This was too much. He closed his eyes and numbly stepped over the body, walking to the basin of water that Devall usually used for cleaning tools. The water was still clean. He cleansed his skin and hands, his body still numb and his mouth closed in silence. He then walked over to the cloak rack, wrapping a heavy black cloak around himself. The hood fell over his face and his eyes, two blue orbs, a faint remnant of the luminescence that he had cast on Devall still remained. His eyes glowed dimly as he walked over to Kyoshi's side, the cloak wrapped tightly and comfortingly around himself. For the first time in his life his mind was a blank, he couldn't think, he couldn't talk, he just wanted to keep moving. The pair of glowing blue eyes looked up to Kyoshi. "...lets go..." he whispered. Then, without even waiting for the other, he started to walk for the door, the heavy feeling weighing down the air around him. |
