Hadrian looked at Zera with interest, his grip, which was surprisingly firm given his fatigue, reminded Hadrian that just moments ago Zera had been swinging a sword of almost equal size to him. To be of such a young age yet have the strength to lift such a large hunk of metal and what kind of life had the he had to already be cursing the gods like that. Hadrian clutched his forearms, not because of pain but because his hands had begun to shake as the adrenaline rush of the fight subsided. He had been used to fighting before but now, after such a long time...he sighed and dropped to the ground, sitting on a relatively dry patch.

"A reason huh? For what reason do people get wrongly branded and sent to Nowhere only to die from cold or heat there, or even others like them who have lost their humanity? If there is an unseen force tugging on our strings for some higher purpose I'd good blow to what might pass as its head."

Hadrian paused for a moment, stopping himself from going on a rant. He tended to ramble and found it just rather irritating as it sometimes lead to him forgetting the subject of the conversation, which almost always lead to awkward silences. Then Zera commented on Hadrian's arms before asking where he came from.

"There's no cause for worry." Said Hadrian, nodding toward his arms. "It's just slightly uncomfortable, it'll no doubt fade away shortly, not so sure about you though. As for where I'm from, nowhere in particular."

Hadrian smirked ever so slightly so it came out as more of a twitch in the corner of his mouth. He had been asked that question several times, not surprisingly as it was a very common question, and he always gave the same answer. Not giving Zera a chance to inquire further on the matter Hadrian quickly asked what he should have long since asked.

"So what happened that caused you to end up in a fight with five guards in the middle of the marshes?"

Zera frowned at the man's rant. He was right of course, but thats not what he was getting at. He looked away for a moment. Collecting himself. Zera had a darkness in him that he had begun to notice more and more these days. Living like an animal did that to you. He had nearly killed another man. He coughed once and rubbed his head, his vision was getting blurry again. He had lost a lot of blood, way too much. He took a few stabilizing breaths and looked up at the man. Hadrian was a branded? That would be the obvious explanation. Just by the looks of him, the way his voice shook and the way he ranted about Nowhere.

"You're a branded." Zera said, looking up at him, his body still weak, he swore inwardly. What a mistake! This guy was still in good condition, he could Kill Zera no problem in his state. Zera didn't have a brand on him, so his knowledge of this other man's status was a threat. He shied back a bit despite himself before swallowing hard and looking up at him.

"There was a girl branded... these guys, they were gonna have their way with her." He began, looking away. He rubbed his sore arm. "I wasn't about to let these fuckers get away with it." He said. In retrospect it was stupid of him to challenge that many men, but... He shrugged.

For a moment Hadrian considered lying to Zera, he could say he had a close relative or a friend who had been branded. But then Zera'd probably ask about his headband and why he wouldn't remove it. Then again, considering Zera had just fought several guards Hadrian doubted he was the type to report to the authorities. Hadrian looked over at Zera, wondering whether it should be the truth or a lie to come out of his mouth. Before he could decide Zera explained the reason behind him fighting the guards. With that Hadrian was certain that Zera was no threat as he had stood up for a branded girl, yet his face was dead serious when he spoke without an ounce of humor in his voice.

"I would advice you not to go about making claims like that. Not all of them are wrongfully sentenced, there are plenty who are more than deserving of what lies underneath this headband of mine. But yes, I am a branded, five years since I got sent to Nowhere, only a year since I got out."

Hadrian took a breath before continuing to speak, this time in a softer, more relaxed tone.

"Well, I can't say you reasons for this fight weren't just but you must be careful not to lose yourself like you were about to back there. For when you do you will begin to lose yourself in you entirety."

Again Hadrian paused, he was getting serious again, a bit too serious for his liking. Even if he already had the outlook of an adult, Zera was just a fourteen year old boy after all, yet Hadrian had to ask one more thing regarding this whole thing.

"What do you intend to do? I doubt you'd last long picking fights with every corrupted guardsman you come across. The next ones will most likely be sober and I have no doubt one of those could do us both in without much trouble. Helping others is all well and good but you must be sure not to die whilst doing so or you won't be able to make much of a difference in the future. You also better hope these men are too drunk to remember you clearly for you would no doubt be branded and cast into Nowhere for this."

Now Hadrian stopped entirely, waiting patiently for Zera's reply. He may have been a bit more serious than he intended but in the end he figured it was better to be a bit a little low in spirits than end up dead.

He held his gaze a moment, thinking about how best to respond.

Zera was prodigiously intelligent for a boy his age, yet his emotions were constantly in the way these days. He stood up straight and said, with a firmness in his tone. "Whatever the consequences, whatever punishment I take, even if I become the Void himself..." He said, uttering a version of the silent oath he swore to himself. His jaw twitched as he spoke, he felt like his beliefs and his goals were being challenged here. He wouldn't stand for it! He... he didn't move, but he took a psychological step back.

"I won't lose." He said finally, his eyes shaking, wanting to look away from the other, wanting to hide the fear he felt in his gut. Instead he quashed it, and molded it into something else. He didn't know how well Hadiran could read faces. If he were talented enough, Hadrian would easily sense the boy's fear. Zera looked down finally, collecting himself. "I'm not exactly strong enough to follow up on those words yet... am I?" He asked, laughing weakly to himself. He still felt a bit woozy from the loss of blood.

"If I could learn how to fight, really really fight..." He gritted his teeth and looked down at the massive blade on the ground.
