FANDOM The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes' Novels and Stories. NAME Dr. Johnathan Hamish Watson. Simply John, if you please. Or Watson. The occasional Jack, now that he's in the Land of Opportunity. Never Hamish. The Hamish is just a dying remnant of his father's Scottish heritage. GENDER Male. AGE 36. ROOM NUMBER 007. APPEARANCE Dresses on the formal (yet very simple,) side in public, his suits consisting of a charcoal gray color, for the most part, accompanied by an occasional tan. Watson prefers them to the harshness of black and brown. And while he may go about in shirtsleeves at the apartment or around his make-shift practice, his bowler rarely leaves his head. Any one less acquainted to him than Holmes might suggest it had been glued on in a freak accident during his infancy. Not bad looking, either. (Holmes jokes about Watson's potential luck with the ladies on several occasions.) ♠ HEIGHT Around 5' 6''. ♠ BUILD Youthful;"... a middle-sized, strongly built man--square jaw, thick neck.” ♠ SKIN His skin is darker than most, particularly considering the fact he hails from England. Comes from his time as a surgeon in the 66th foot in Afghanistan. His face is generally smooth, and he boasts only two noticeable markings: A smattering of pink-purple scar tissue along his left collar bone. (During the battle at Maiwand, a bullet shattered his collar bone and scraped his subclavian artery. He nearly died of blood loss, the poor fellow.) The second, a more recent, jetting scar along his left temple, put there by a passing bullet. ♠ HAIR A light brown color in his youth. Perhaps more than one or two gray hairs starting to show. A neatly trimmed, thick mustache to match. ♠ EYES Ordinary, brown. ♠ FACE CLAIM Jude Law, as pictured here. I couldn't help using this picture. He's protecting his Sherlock! ♠ ACCENT/PHONETICS A thick English accent, perhaps a very little bit of the Middle East to be found there as well. OCCUPATION Holmes' lackey. (Erm... sidekick.) Runs a clinic as well, from his flat. No operations, just diagnosis and the like. He's thinking of looking for a permanent spot on a team at a hospital where he can practice properly. HISTORY Grew up in London with his father. A smart boy, rather open and trusting, if a bit too blunt at times. At the proper age, he went to medical school, earned his degree. He was sent off on a wild goose chase by the AMD through Afghanistan, the drums beating Heart of Oak in his wake. He was meant to be second surgeon, but when his company moved on before his arrival, he was placed with the 66th, as head surgeon. A wound in battle shortly after this sent him back home to London, where he met Mr. Holmes. Soon, Watson and Holmes had become flat mates, at 221B Baker street. Watson spent the better part of 6 months attempting to gather the exact occupation of his best companion, before being taken into Holmes' true confidence. Watson worked for some time as Holmes' partner, and was married to Mary Morstan, who died during a three year absence on Holmes' part. Shortly after, he and Holmes took up residence in America, in order to pursue a new case. (Short bio fail due to not wanting to be too specific, so as not to kill off too many plot opportunities with Mr. Holmes.) ♠ RELATIONSHIPS Sherlock Holmes- friend, confidant, co-worker. Mary Morstan- wife. (Now deceased.) PERSONALITY He's been described, by Sherlock and in context of the same as being “sentimental and romantic,” in that he views Holmes as a kind of idol in many ways. Like Holmes, he is intelligent, but lacks his partner's natural insight. “[Holmes] was a man of habits... and I had become one of them... a comrade... upon whose nerve he could place some reliance... a whetstone for his mind. I stimulated him... If I irritated him by a certain methodical slowness in my mentality, that irritation served only to make his own flame-like intuitions and impressions flash up the more vividly and swiftly. Such was my humble role in our alliance.” Watson has always been aware of his limits, but also recognizes his usefulness. He is capable, at least, and a reliable co-worker and friend. Watson doesn't have the proper aspects of a detective: he is too open, too guileless, and lacks Holmes' imagination. At the same time,he is clever enough to follow Holmes' own reasoning, therefore, a useful companion. His one advantage over Holmes is his warmth, and his kindheartedness, which counters Holmes' calculating manner. One thing which can be said is that he certainly holds a fair piece of the market corner on loyalty, as is observed in this scene (Watson has been shot apparently, and Holmes in a witness to the shooting): "It was worth a wound—it was worth many wounds—to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation." (Holmes replies to the perpetrator, after learning the bullet has merely grazed his friend: "If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive." ) ♠ QUIRKS Finds red hair particularly attractive. ♠ SEXUAL ORIENTATION Heterosexual.
