Let darkness take you...

The man behind the counter hesitated for a moment, as if considering whether or not to press the issue. After a moment he resigned himself to the situation and left to get the two of them their orders, muttering something along the way. There was that word again, newbie. Lawrence caught it just as the guy was ducking into the back room where the kitchen was to prepare the food. Were he and Leo new to something? Maybe they stood out as foreigners in this town; the place certainly looked different to him, but he couldn’t be sure how Leo took everything he was seeing. “So, are those bits trade goods of some sort?” Lawrence asked Leo as he waited for their food to arrive, his merchant’s persona driving his interest at the moment. “And what about those pieces of paper, dollars you called them? Where does their value come from? Are they documents of some sort, like deeds or entitlements? |

Leo then said, "Trade goods? No. These Bits form of currency. Mostly used among digimon where I come from, and people who deal with digimon. But apparently around here, it has no value at all. Seems it won't be doing me any good for now." he then pulled out his first wallet again and pulled out a few dollars for Lawrence to see. He then said, "As for my Dollars, I'm a little surprised you don't know about it. It's the primary currency used within the united states and even used in trade with other nations at times. Lots of nations use paper currency kinda like this in some form. New england, Japan, Europe. And it's value is shown right on it's face." He then put the money down on the table for a bit and said, "What I find more interesting is the money you used to pay him with. Those were coins made from Copper and silver, weren't they? I don't think people have made coins that thick since the 1800's. Maybe I don't know much about the history of money, but those looked like what they used ages ago when coins and barter was mainly used throughout the eastern nations, hundreds of years ago. So that leaves me to wonder... Old fashioned cloths... Old fashioned coins... Where do you come from? Or better yet, when?" His eyes were locked on Lawrence at this point. He had a strong feeling Lawrence wasn't from this age. |

Lawrence listened to Leo’s thinking, his level of confusion over everything that was happening climbing with every word his new acquaintance spoke. He didn’t recognize any of the names and places that Leo brought up. He also couldn’t understand why the money that Leo used was worth anything at all. Without something to back it up like gold or silver it was only logical that merchants would lose their trust in any currency’s face value. These dollars that Leo used where he came from were just paper without the trust of the market, after all, so where did that trust come from. Most concerning was Leo’s suggestion of why things were so different to Lawrence, not quite voiced aloud but clear as day if it wasn’t so insane a thought to ponder. Was his companion really putting such a crazy thought on the table or did he simply not understand what he was hearing? “Are you seriously asking me ‘when’ I am from?” Lawrence asked of Leo’s question, trying to wrap his head around the idea. “Do you know how outrageous that sounds? Besides, even if it does explain why nothing here is familiar to me, it doesn’t give any clarification as to why you’re in the same boat as me.” |

Leo looked at Laurence and said, "Well it only makes sense to me when I think about it. I'd bet That I could find a few other things around here too that you've never seen around her too. Look up at the ceiling! Have you ever seen lightsbulbs before? They glow without burning oil or wood. Have you ever seen a Digital Wrist watch that keeps perfect track of time? Did you know that people can fly over the ocean to visit other countries in a day or so on an aircraft? While this world may have lots of new things for you, it's completely missing other things from where I come from. There are no signs of other digimon or tamers around besides Me and my partner Luna. This leads me to a couple of conclusions. One, you've been brought forwards in time, many years from when you once were. Two, This may not be my own world. It's something I figured before we started traveling together, and other things have pointed towards it being true. And three, Neither of us knows how we really got here in the first place. There anything else you'd like to point out that doesn't belong?" |

Lawrence listened as Leo tried to convince him of this bizarre theory that he had somehow traveled through time. It certainly sounded ludicrous; however, the more his companion brought to the young merchant’s attention, he hadn’t even noticed the lights inside and assumed that all the lighting was simply coming through the windows since he didn’t see any candles, the more he had to come to terms that it was a possible explanation to his present predicament. He hoped that Leo was wrong, since time travel would make things more complicated for his returning home than hitching a ride with some travelers, but his mind was already starting to rationalize the ridiculous notion. “No, that’s enough.” Lawrence answered to Leo’s question as he leaned forward on the counter and tried to soak in everything. “I guess I don’t have a better explanation for all the strange things I’m seeing, either. The question now, though, if you’re right is what do we do next?” They were interrupted as Lawrence finished his lamenting by the swinging of the kitchen door and the return of their host at this little eatery. The man knew how to handle his business, carrying all three of their orders in one trip. “You had the hamburger,” the establishment owner recalled as he set down Lawrence’s food in front of the youth before moving on to do the same for Leo. “And yours was the triple cheeseburger.” Lawrence looked curiously at his food, trying to deduce what everything was. The sandwich had a dark meat to it that looked like beef, a surprise to the young merchant considering the low cost. The glass sitting next to it was filled with a dark fizzing elixir, though it didn’t look like any alcoholic beverage he had ever seen. Along with the ‘burger’ on his plate were thin eats that looked slightly crisp. Picking one up and taking a bite, his eyes widened to find that they were potatoes, though with a rich and salty flavor that was just heavenly to his taste buds. Salt, too, huh? Again he was surprised at the reasonable cost of the meal. While the young merchant was inspecting his meal, the man behind the counter held up a bucket containing their third order of buffalo wings, though he didn’t present it to them just yet. He seemed to be suspicious about ordering a meal for someone who wasn’t there, seeing that if the wings were meant to be takeout then they would likely be cold by the time Lawrence and Leo finished eating. “You said this was for a friend, right? If you’re still waiting for her to get here I can keep these warm in the back for you.” |

Leo nodded as Lawrence came to accept what he had to say. He then sighed and said, "Alright. But don't worry. If you need me to explain anything to you around here, I'd be glad to. For some reason though, this place still give me an odd feeling too. Like I'm still missing something myself..." When the owner came back with their dishes, Leo smiled as he took his and said, "Thank you. We really appreciate it." He took his plate from the man and set it down on the table. He then grabbed a few fries to munch on. As he ate, he watched Laurence inspecting his food a bit. He then grabbed the ketchup from the side and said, "The fries are a bit better when you dip them in Ketchup in my opinion. But then, some people prefer them just plain." He then squeezed the ketchup bottle and poured out a bit next to his fries. When the Owner asked about the wings, he said, "Actually, those are kinda to go. My friend isn't coming here, but we're taking those back to her. I do appreciate you keeping them warm though, and I'm sure she'd appreciate them good and hot as well." |

Hearing what Leo had said about the ketchup, Lawrence waited for him to finish using the strange bottle of red stuff and set it down before taking some for his own plate. Patting it out into an opening between his fries and the burger, he capped the bottle and set it aside before dipping his finger into the red mound and tasting it experimentally. His eyes widened a little in surprise at the taste. “Tomatoes?” He thought aloud to himself quizzically before moving on to try this ketchup stuff when it was paired with the stick shaped potatoes. Meanwhile, the man behind the counter listened to Leo’s explanation concerning the third order for their missing friend. His suspicions slowly waned until finally he just shrugged and started to carry it all back into the kitchen. What the youth had said made sense, after all, so there was no inclination to question any further. “Fine, I’ll bring this stuff back out when you’re ready to leave.” The owner of the establishment replied over his shoulder as he ducked back into the kitchen. “This food is good.” Lawrence announced soon after to no one in particular, his voice sounding surprised even to his own ears. It was strange food to the young merchant, especially these fries of which he had already tried a few in the ketchup and found satisfactory. While enjoying his food, his mind was sent drifting to thoughts of home. Horo would probably love eating at a place like this… |

Leo then took his drink and put a straw in it before taking a drink to rinse down what he was eating. He then smiled and said, "So I guess this would be the first time you've had food quite like this. Cause I'm certain that they didn't have burgers and fries all those years ago. Though I suppose they at least had some decent spices back then to make their meals more flavorful at least." He then took another bite of his Cheeseburger. After another drink, he looked at Lawrence and said, "Though you know something? I'm a bit surprised the owner was able to accept your coins for payment so easily. He seemed to figure the price quickly enough too. I wouldn't know what to do with coins like those if someone offered to pay me with that." |

“Spice is an expensive commodity that a traveling merchant like me would consider a frivolous luxury. If I spent money ensuring I had spice to flavor every meal I would never turn a profit. I usually only deal in the stuff if I plan to sell it off somewhere else like I did with a recent load of pepper.” Lawrence munched down on his burger for a moment, before washing it down with the strange black liquid called ‘cola’. He found the drink to be very sweet, another surprise, and having a slight burning bite to it. “As for salt, the farther you are from the sea, the higher the prices rise. Occasionally I’ll indulge myself when I’m passing through a coastal town on business and can aquire some cheap, but normally I have to find different ways to flavor my food.” When Leo expressed his surprise towards the establishment’s owner accepting Lawrence’s coins for payment, the young merchant had to admit that he was curious about the exchange as well. However, his reasons were probably a little different from those of his companion he’d wager. What he had found peculiar was in the intricate details of the exchange, rather than the strangeness in any one currency used. “The man was clearly used to dealing in precious metals, but not in the particular coinage that I happened to be carrying.” Lawrence mused, working through his thoughts at the same time as he was trying to convey them to Leo. “As for your dollars, he seemed familiar with the actual currency, rather than simply gauging the approximate worth of what he was holding. What was more curious to me was the fact that he seemed ready to determine the value of your other currency, those bits, despite the fact that he’d never seen them before and thus shouldn’t have had any interest in dealing with them.” |

Leo smiled and said, "Well, take a look at this. Spices are a lot more easy to come by in this day and age." He then takes the salt and pepper shakers from the side of the table and shows them to Laurence. He then said, "Here we've got salt and pepper people can use to spice up their meals any time they want." He ate a little more as he listened to Laurence. He then said, "True. He didn't flat out reject my bits either. But then, I'm not sure it's a currency he'd use much anyhow... These are used between digimon more than anything else anyhow. If I was back home, I'd have plenty of places I could use it." |

“Is that so?” Lawrence responded to Leo’s explanation of modern seasoning sales as he picked up the salt shaker and poured a pinch of it into the palm of his other hand. Sniffing it briefly before taking a lick, he found it to be fine stuff, fresh as if they were on the coast. “Looks like a valuable trade has lost some of its momentum, I’ll have to remember that I can’t make a good profit off of this stuff around here. Just in case I have the opportunity to do some business in this place before I get back home.” As he munched more on his burger, Lawrence watched the store owner as he came out from behind the counter and headed to some of the tables in the back that hadn’t been set up yet for customer use. They really did get here soon after the place had opened it seemed. Now that he thought about it, he would be smart to start asking those questions that he was harboring before the establishment got too busy. As their host returned and made his way for the kitchen door once more, the young merchant raised his hand to get the man’s attention for a moment. “Hello, the name is Kraft Lawrence.” He said, deciding to finally introduce himself to the man to start things off right. “Please, call me Lawrence. I was wondering if my companion and I could ask you a few questions.” “You just got here, didn’t you?” The man behind the counter asked, surprisingly blunt as he continued to work behind the counter while talking. “I was wondering when you would start with the inquires. The new ones are always confused.” “W-well, yes, in fact we just got here today.” Lawrence replied, perplexed as he looked over at Leo questioningly. Did a situation like theirs show up a lot around here or something? |

He smiled as he saw Lawrence examining the salt. He then took a drink of his soda and resumed eating. Leo was about done with his meal when Lawrence started asking new questions of the guy behind the counter. He felt Lawrence had the right idea, trying to get more information about things. But as Leo listened, he looked at the guy and said, "New ones? What does that mean?" He didn't want to give away too much himself, but he had a deep feeling that this guy knew something that neither of them knew, and might even be telling them soon. |

“We get people like you all the time, is what it means.” The man behind the counter answered as he continued to work around his station while chatting with the two diners. “They’re always confused about what’s happening to them and they’re always looking for answers.” He eyed the two in a considering fashion, as if debating whether to continue. “I hope you guys have made your peace with wherever it is that you came from.” Lawrence didn’t like the tone of the establishment owner as he listened to the man start to answer their questions. His food, which was presently a little more than half finished, was now long forgotten as his interest was entirely captured by what he was hearing. The way their host spoke, it sounded heavy and resigned while having grown dull after constant retelling, like a doctor who had become accustomed to delivering a form of bad news to his patients. He had a feeling that he wasn’t going to like what he was about to be told, whatever that might be. “What do you mean?” Lawrence asked hesitantly, leaning in a little on the counter as he hung on what the store owner might say next. “What’s happened to us?” “You’ve been brought to another dimension, like countless others before you.” The answer was so blunt and straightforward that it nearly knocked the young merchant off his stool as the man behind the counter finally gave the two his full attention. “If you left anything unfinished where you came from then you’re going to have to live with your regrets, because no one’s found a way back to my knowledge.” |

Leo folded his arms and said, "I see... I figured as much that it could have been a dimensional thing. It was one of the few things that made sense as to what was different around here." He then looked worried as he said, "But no way back? There must be something that could be done! I've left a girlfriend back in the dimension I came from, and I really care about her. I can't just give up so easily." |

Unlike the digimon tamer, Lawrence was just a simple traveling merchant. Things like trading goods, negotiation, market prices, these things he understood. Interdimensional travel through space and time? Hell, there weren’t science fiction novels where he came from to even suppose the possibility of such crazy concepts. As with Leo’s suggestion, it sounded absolutely ridiculous, but again like Leo’s suggestion it wasn’t like he had a better explanation. Besides, what reason would this man they were talking with have to lie to them, other than perhaps the enjoyment of messing with their heads and he found that motive as seeming highly unlikely. Meanwhile, the establishment owner listened to Leo express his understanding while displaying a desire to return to his own home again. He looked a little relieved, or maybe even mildly impressed, that the youth wasn’t shocked out of his mind over learning what was happening to him, but he also appeared to be having difficulty drumming up sympathy for what he had waiting for him back where he came from. It was understandable, though, seeing as he probably had to go through this routine with numerous individuals in the past. If one didn’t get a little desensitized after a while they probably would never be able to handle such things. “Don’t know what to tell you, kid.” The man behind the counter answered with a shrug. “You can look for a way back if you want to, I’ve known some people who do. Still, it’s probably a lost cause. If I were you then I’d get used to this place pretty quickly and forget about what I’d left behind before it drives me mad. The way I see it, there’s no going back.” “I don’t think I can accept that, either.” Lawrence voiced up, still unsure of this situation, but deciding to accept it as fact for now. “I’ve got a… business partner back where I came from and I made a promise to travel with her until she returned home. As a merchant I can’t break my word so easily.” |
