It was morning and the park at the center of town was seemingly unpopulated at present. Maybe that wasn’t entirely correct, as there was one person up this early in the day. Again, perhaps that wording is in error, since this particular individual was asleep. Wearing a brown jacket that fortunately kept him warm in the chilly air of daybreak, his back was rested against a tree and his arms folded across his chest as he snoozed peacefully. As the first sunrays of the day peaked over the city’s rooftops and shone on the young man’s face he grumbled in mild complaint before blinking groggily and opening his eyes to take in the world around him.

Something wasn’t right, this first thought managing to keep itself alive even in the recesses of his muzzy head. Scratching at the stubble of a beard growing out on his chin, he tried to rack his mind for what was making him so uncomfortable. It was really driving him crazy, waking up was supposed to be a relaxing experience that highlighted how one would feel for the rest of the day after all. Well, this confusion was definitely a preview of the day fast setting upon the young man. Suddenly coming to a realization, his eyes widened in shock and he scrambled to his feet, using the tree at his back that shouldn’t be there for balance. Where were the horse and the cart? Where were his trade goods that he was planning to sell at the next town? Where was…?

“Horo!” Lawrence called out in frantic confusion as he looked around desperately for whatever meager fraction of this strange and unfamiliar territory he found himself in that might be halfway recognizable. “Where are you? Horo!”

The merchant called out for his traveling companion a few more times, but as his throat started to feel raw and there came no response from the wolf deity he finally came to stop the pointless shouting. There was a bench along a path that cut through the park he found himself in and feeling like his feet could give out on him at any moment the young man staggered over and took a seat as he tried to make sense of what was going on. Had the cart been pilfered by thieves while he slept and him dumped off the side while the robbers drove through town? No, that didn’t make sense at all; Horo was sleeping in the wagon, too, and would have heard bandits approaching in enough time to warn him. Not to mention he wouldn’t have slept through being tossed from his own cart.

“What the hell is going on…?” Lawrence queried almost inaudibly to himself, resting his face in his hands as he tried to think.

Leo awoke to someone shaking him fervently and calling his name. "Leo? Leo! Wake up! Come on now! I know you're Alive, now wake up!" Leo groaned as he squinted, looking up at a blurred figure over him. He recognized the voice well enough though. He then said groggily, "Luna?" As his his vision cleared up, he could clearly see the form of a white fox like creature kneeling over him. He knew this to be his digimon companion, Luna the Renamon.

Luna sighed and said, "Thank goodness, you're coming to. I've been trying to wake you up for half an hour. Leo, something's terribly wrong. I don't know where we are, or how we got here. When I woke up, we were laying in the middle of the streets, with humans staring from every direction. I managed to get us to a park with less people around, but you'd swear those humans had never seen a digimon before."

Leo slowly got up as he listened to his partner. He then said, "Mmm. That's strange... Why would people around here at like that? Just Where are we?"

Luna shrugged and said, "I'm not sure... I've scouted around for a while, and all I can say is, 'we're not in Kansas anymore'. This whole town is unfamiliar to me!"

Leo normally would have laughed a bit at such a reference, but he could sense her distress in her voice. He then did his best to get upright and a get his bearings strait. He then said, "Damn... Ya got to hate when that happens... Dumb portals... They never have any sense..."

Huh? Voices? Lawrence hadn’t been seated long when he thought he heard others in the park he had awoken to. He lifted his head wearily, remaining a little shell-shocked by the whole situation and his resultant confusion. Hands still covered his face in a supportive embrace so he spread his fingers a little in order to better see where the source of the disturbances was coming from. It was a little hard making out what he was seeing while looking through his hands, but he thought he saw… pointed ears? And was that a tail?

“H-Horo…?” The merchant’s eyes widened with surprise and more than a little wishful thinking as the name fell quietly from his lips.

His hopes were dashed the moment he removed his hands from his face and got a better look at the source of these animal features. First off the fur wasn’t right at all, a pure snowy white rather than the rich brown of his traveling companion’s hair and tail. Second matter of note, Horo could easily pass off as human, so long as she wore a hat and a skirt or robe that could cover her more exotic aspects. This thing’s appearance was animal through and through, no doubt about it, though the thing did stand on its hind legs. On closer inspection its features also closer resembled those of a fox rather than a wolf. It was also with someone, this one a human, and they seemed busy conversing about something with one another.

“Hey over there!” Lawrence called out across the park to the two, waving for their attention as he stood from his seat on the bench and started jogging himself over to them.

Normally his first rational instincts would be to stay clear of a giant bipedal fox creature. However, he was alone and without answers, not to mention worried beyond rational thinking. Besides, he was a merchant, his weapon was information and these two were the only ones in sight who could provide him with any. If he thought about it he’d have to say that his journeys with a wolf deity couldn’t have hurt his sensitivity to the situation either.

When he reached the two he’d pause for but a moment to catch his breath. Glancing peculiarly at the walking white fox for only a brief moment as he straightened out, he decided that the best thing to do was just come right out with it. The worst that could happen was that he might look like a loon in front of a couple of strangers and at the moment there were more pressing matters concerning him than something as trivial as that.

“Where are we right now?” Lawrence asked anxiously, his gaze shifting back and forth between the two. “Am I back in Renos? I don’t remember a park like this, though. Are we somewhere further north?”

Leo and Luna turned to face the voice of the one who called to them. They were actually surprised to hear someone actually call to them like that. Luna then said, "Well, maybe this world isn't so devoid of people who are unfamiliar with digimon. This one doesn't seem so freaked about about me." She looked over the strangely dressed human as he drew closer.

Leo shrugged to Luna and said, "Maybe. We'll see." He then stood side by side with Luna as the man meet up with them. When the man asked his questions, Leo had to shake his head and said, "Sorry. I'm afraid I have no more clue than yourself. I just recently woke up myself. And according to my partner here, she doesn't recognize the town around this park either. And to add to that, we can only guess how we might have gotten here."

Luna nodded. "Despite waking sooner, I haven't gotten too well acquainted with the area yet. I brought us to this park at least to avoid people looking at me strangely."

Leo then looked over Lawrence, noting his cloths were pretty old fashioned. He then asked, "And what's with that outfit you're wearing? Is it some sort of costume for a classical play or something? Cause that looks pretty rustic to me." He might not have been dressed up a lot himself, but Leo certainly stood apart from Lawrence with what he was wearing.

Lawrence was shocked as he listened to the response that the others gave him. Neither of them knew where they were either? He hadn’t been expecting that. Merchants dabbled with chance on a daily basis, all the unpredictable happenings that could raise or lower the prices of their trade goods, so Lawrence could tell when something was fishy and this was no coincidence. That begged the query, though, of why the three of them suddenly found themselves lost when there was no discernable connection between them. While pondering this he was abruptly questioned about his outfit, which not only perplexed him but also furrowed his brow in mild displeasure.

“I know these aren’t my best set of clothes, but they’re admirably tailored and I even managed to get them for a bargain.” Lawrence answered while looking himself over and wondering what was wrong with what he was wearing. Come to think of it, the merchant gave the human of the pair a once over and realized he was dressed a little funny himself.

He was considering pressing the issue. After all, it was beyond his control that his finest clothing had been torn apart during that whole silver coin fiasco and what he currently wore was made of durable material that had lasted him for years. However, it was silly to get into an argument about clothes when one was uprooted from everything they knew and recognized. There were more proper matters to be concerned about than which one of them was better dressed.

“Well, in any case, it looks like all of us have gotten into a bit of a mess.” Lawrence continued, managing a weak chuckle despite how shaken he felt over the whole mysterious situation. He extended a hand in greeting to the two, making the gesture ambiguous and waiting for either to take it first. “Let me introduce myself. The name’s Kraft Lawrence, though I go by my surname.”

Leo rubbed his neck a bit with Lawrence's response. He then said, "Well, it's just unusual. I'm not saying you have bad taste or anything, but it's certainly rustic in style."

Luna smiled a bit and said, "I wasn't gonna say anything. I'm not much for human fashion myself. But I can appreciate it none the less."

Leo chuckled at Luna's response. Then when Lawrence introduced himself, Leo extened his own hand in return, so they could shake as he said, "I'm Leonardo Wildheart, but my friends just call me Leo. It's interesting to meet you Lawrence."

Luna then held out her own paw to do the same as she said, "And I'm Luna. I'm a Renamon, if you didn't know already. I'm Also Leo's partner and friend."

Lawrence still didn’t understand Leo’s assessment of his clothing. What he was wearing was supposed to be reasonably fashionable in the bigger cities. He had to look presentable, after all, or no one would take him seriously during business transactions. It was probably just another mystery to add to the pile of what was happening, but for now a debate over fashion sense could take a back seat in the wagon to figuring out what a probable next move might be. While these two he had met looked a little strange, the fox with the white fur especially so for obvious reasons, they and he shared a common problem and so he saw benefit in consulting with them.

As the merchant’s hand was shaken in greeting by both of the two strangers he had no trouble with Leo, but he’d never dealt with a paw before. Still, he managed somehow with the big furry appendage as he listened to her greeting. Luna he could wrap his head around, but a Rena-what? Partners in what sense? Business like Horo and himself? They didn’t look like the merchant types, though. In the end, Lawrence decided it didn’t really matter and inquiring much further would just take up time that they could be using to gather answers to what the heck was going on.

“Well, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one confused over where this place is.” Lawrence responded to the two, finally starting to take charge of his situation as the shock gradually wore off, though inside he still felt a little like he’d been knocked over by a runaway horse. “If the two of you aren’t opposed to it, I suppose we’d be better off searching for answers together. There has to be someone close by who can clue us in to what is going on.”

Leo then said, "That sounds like a reasonable plan. Just standing around here in the park doesn't do us a whole lot of good. We'd best start exploring our surroundings so we can get some idea of what is here. At the very least, we might not be AS lost as we are now."

Luna then said, "At least this place has plenty of people, businesses and stores around. Makes things easier than landing in the middle of nowhere. Maybe we could find a place to eat along the way too. I'm getting hungry, and you know my kind doesn't hold up as well when we're hungry Leo."

Leo nodded and said, "Alright. We'll find somewhere to eat too. Just be sure to stick to the shadows and roofs. You already said people acted a bit strange at the sight of you. I'll be certain to order some food to take out to you as well."

And so their little group was formed. While he’d like to say he’d prefer the company of Horo at the moment while figuring out what was going on, until he had a gist of the situation he wasn’t sure if he wanted his traveling companion anywhere near the mess of a scenario he found himself in. For the moment all he could do was hope she was alright and then try worrying about himself for a while. The best way to go about doing that right now was to have a look around. Who knows, maybe he’d find something he recognized. He couldn’t have been out for too long, there were probably only a handful of towns that he could find himself in now.

“Having a look around is probably a good idea.” Lawrence replied, before feeling his stomach give a minor hungry grumble. Placing a hand on his abdomen, he remembered that he had eaten rather light the night before. “Finding somewhere to eat might not be a bad thought either.”

When Leo suggested that Luna keep hidden, Lawrence was a little relieved to find out that he wasn’t the only one who had been caught off guard by the white fox’s appearance. At least he was getting used to the sight of her, though that was probably because he was so used to Horo by his side. He couldn’t imagine what the rest of the town might think when they first laid eyes on something so foreign in appearance. She wouldn’t be able to hide her animal features very easily by just throwing on some clothing either. That reminded him that he was still curious about what he was dealing with here, though he was doing well to hide his prying inquisitiveness in the interest of not prolonging their party taking action.

Leo then said, "Then let's get going. I just hope my money is good around here. Otherwise, we might have to get resourceful if we're gonna have anything to eat." He then started heading down a path from the park, hoping it would lead them out.

Luna interrupted and said, "Actually, the other way will get you out of the park faster. I did get to do a little scouting while you were still out Leo."

Leo nodded and said, "Ah. Thanks Luna. I appreciate it." Luna smiled, then just seemed to fade from sight as she went stealthy. Leo was barely phased by that as he started down the path as Luna suggested.

Lawrence was more than a little shocked at the white fox that called herself a Renamon when she vanished from sight in the blink of an eye, leaving without a trace as she went to hide and tail them from the shadows. He had been wondering just how the fox planned to keep up while keeping out of sight from the inquisitive gazes of other pedestrians, but now he was starting to get the impression that she would have no problem with the task. His astonishment didn’t slow him down for long, though, and he quickly caught himself up and into lockstep with Leo in the direction that Luna had suggested that they take.

The young merchant wasn’t too worried about his currency’s worth in this town like his fellow human companion. Gold and silver count was pretty standard across boundaries so regardless of the slim chance that he had wound up in another country there would be very little difference between his coins’ face value and the actual worth, at least for the more valuable money with the higher metal purity. What he was more worried about was the town itself. It didn’t look anything like he was used to. Oh, it didn’t look far out there by any means. Still, it did look weirdly different, kind of like Leo’s getup. It only made him wonder all the more what was going on.

“In my experience, perfect strangers aren’t very generous with imparting even sensible information.” Lawrence conversed with Leo as they walked. “I was anxious and irrational when I approached you and Luna because of my disorientation and fortunately for me the situation proved profitable, but mostly because the two of you were in the same boat as me. From what I’ve seen so far I don’t think I’m going to find that I’ve been in this city before and that means I won’t have any contacts. The next best source for answers is someone who wants our business, a merchant of some sort who will indulge our questions as long as we’ve got the money to keep his interest.”

Leo looked at Lawrence and said, "Really? Well, I've heard about how some people consider information valuable. And right now, I'd probably spend my entire wallet just to figure out what in the world happened. That's information we definitely both want. So you're think talking with merchants will help us out? I suppose it's worth a shot. But perhaps I could go one better. Let me see." He pulled out his digivice from his pocket then and started looking over the screen. He then set the digivice to radar mode, so he might find any other digivice signals from around the town. Unfortunately, he got none at the time. Only his own. He then said, "Damn. So much for that. Not a single Digivice signal in range. I was kinda hoping I might catch the signal of another like myself." He sighed as he looked up from his digivice, not putting it away.

He looked around a bit as he said, "Hmm. The town's not too bad. A bit quiet around this part, but it's kinda comfortable."

“Well, it’s just my instincts at work as a merchant myself, I suppose.” Lawrence responded to Leo’s reaction. “It shouldn’t be difficult to find someone to pry our situation out of, though. We’ll just look around this town until we have a good feel for the place and then when we stop somewhere to get something to eat we can ask the store owner a few questions. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind obliging us so long as we’re there to eat something.”

“As for what I think about this place, the last few towns I’ve passed through have led me into some business trouble.” The merchant went on. “Compared to that, it’ll be nice to walk around a quiet town for a change.”

He was curious about the device in Leo’s hand, but he couldn’t conceive any reasonable explanation as to how some small metallic-looking device was going to help them in their present situation. He was starting to see a lot of different things today that he wasn’t used to and it was beginning to really confuse him. The sooner he got some answers, the better shape his wellbeing would be by the end of all this confusion.

That reminded him of another thing he wasn’t used to seeing, that white fox, and now that they were moving and it wouldn’t slow them down much, he could ask what he was meaning to for a while now. Not to mention that Luna wouldn’t be able to hear and get insulted and he wouldn’t get embarrassed over guessing about her in front of her face. Of course, what he didn’t know was that in all likelihood the Renamon was shadowing them closely enough that she could hear anything the two of them discussed with those sensitive fox ears of hers.

“Hey, Leo, I’ve been wanting to ask you something.” Lawrence voiced to the other young man. “Your companion… Luna? Is she some sort of… fox deity?”

Lawrence was working out of the think-tank of his own experiences, after all, and that was the most logical conclusion he had been able to come up with since meeting the two for the first time. The only experience he had with humanoid animals, of course, was the wolf deity Horo when she took on the form of a young woman, so what other possible ideas could he have formed after seeing the walking and talking white fox called a Renamon.

Leo blinked at Lawrence for a moment as he looked at him, then burst into laughter for a bit as he said, "Fox Deity? You mean like a kind of goddess? Not likely! Nobody worships her in that kind of manner! Sure she may be strong and powerful, And she even has a bit of Angelic heritage. But she's not a Deity! No, she's what's know as a Digimon. A Digital Monster! I raised her up from Birth, which was about three years ago! Which is why I'm know as a Digimon Tamer. How in the world did you come up with a conclusion like that?" He was almost holding his sides as he chuckled out loud.

Lawrence hadn’t been too confident in his own assessment at the time of asking, but even though he had been ready to find out that he had been incorrect that didn’t keep him from being embarrassed by Leo’s response. The young merchant turned his back to Leo to hide a blush coming over his face as he unconsciously rubbed at the back of his neck as a result of his feelings of awkwardness.

“Oh, you know, just a hunch I was playing off of.” Lawrence replied, trying to sound casual as he forced out a chuckle to coincide with Leo’s. “Not really sure where it came from, I guess.”

Embarrassment aside, once he started processing his companion’s words he realized that he was confused by most of them. He supposed that if he had to peg a category for Luna it would be monster, as derogatory as that sounded in his head. Though normally he would have waved such a notion aside without a second thought, time with Horo had been teaching him that among those stories and myths that adults considered nothing more than rubbish or at best good entertainment were some that actually held more truth than fiction. However, he wasn’t sure at all on the term digital and he’d never heard of people who tamed monsters before. In the end, though, it probably didn’t matter and only brought up more questions without providing any answers. He would just have to suck up his embarrassment and confusion as they returned to exploring the city.

“I suppose it wasn’t my place to assume anything.” Lawrence continued as he turned back towards Leo, this time when he chuckled it was genuinely relaxed. “Anyways, we should probably get moving again. We won’t find any answers by just talking all day.”
