Hello everyone, this is my first guide on these forums, so please bear with me. I am not a great player as of yet. I am half way through the game on Expert right now. I do happen to be a guitar player of 15 years however. I am also a bassist of 12 years, and I have played the piano for about 10 years. I also recently started playing the Violin, about 3 years ago.

Anyways let us get to the guide.

Starting off on EASY:

Now if you just started playing guitar hero, then this is where you are going to want to start. You should do the songs in order simply because they progress in difficulty. If you have trouble with a certain part of a song, try a different one, or go into practice mode and do the section that is giving you the most difficulty. Slow it down even if necessary.

Here are a few tips for beginners:

  • Keep your fingers on the correct fret buttons. Index finger on green, middle finger on red and ring finger on yellow. Of course this is going to change when you start adding buttons, but start with this for now.
  • You can leave a button held down, if you aren’t strumming. This comes in handy.
  • You must remember to strum each note. My friend was trying to play guitar hero at my friend, and he was so worried about his fingers, he wasn’t strumming. He didn’t understand what he was doing wrong. I had to explain to him, its just like a guitar, not only do you have to play the fret buttons, BUT YOU HAVE TO STRUM EACH NOTE ON TIME!
  • If you have a single note, lets say Red that you had to play, then you could hold down the green button with it while strumming. And it will still count. As long as the notes arent in a chord, or if you had to hold down green, you couldnt hold down red with it. The extra notes you can hold down, have to be lower (To the left if you are playing Right handed, to the right if you are playing left handed)
  • Rock your little fingers out. Have fun with it. Remember, this game is for entertainment purposes.

Medium:
So you are starting to get the feel for how to play and aren’t missing as many notes. Time to step it up a notch.

  • Fingers on the proper buttons. Again, index finger on green, middle finger on red, ring finger on yellow, and now we will have our pinky on the blue.
  • The Hammer-ons and Pull-offs are now going to start to be used. Practice these every chance you get. This allows you to play a note without strumming. If you can use one, then use it. They really come in handy, and to be used to the idea of doing it, helps when you have a faster solo in Hard or Expert. Hammer-ons and Pull-offs can be done on the notes that are white, without the black ring. For more information hit up the tutorial in the game and they will explain and allow you to practice these techniques. If you miss a note while doing one of these techniques, then you will have to start strumming again.
  • This is a given, but figure out what you have problems with, and practice those different techniques. Having trouble keeping up with certain parts? Don’t forget you can slow down parts of the song, using practice mode. This helps quite a bit when you have a really fast lick.
  • Double pick/strum. This comes in handy in the future if you can master this. Sometimes you will find parts of a song that it is IMPOSSIBLE to hit those notes one after another by strumming normally. I know on a real guitar, that double picking/strumming is really the key to hitting different notes properly.
  • Make sure you use your star power in the right places. Don’t use it in areas that have a low number of notes. I usually wait until I’m at x4 and have either a solo, or a big series of notes. Star Power doubles your points. To have more notes to double is really the key. I also use my star power on hard and expert in order to get the crowd pumped so I don’t get booed off the stage. This helps until you get those sections of the songs down and no longer need the star power to advance through the song.

Hard:

Now you get to add that dreaded 5th button. Practice really makes perfect. The more you practice the more likely you are to get better.

  • Now we’ve added that 5th button. In my personal opinion, I find it easier to have your Index finger on the red button, middle finger on the yellow button, ring finger on the blue button and your pinky on the orange button. This means when you need to play the green button you will need to slide up a button. Others find it easier to slide down for the orange and having your fingers in the same position as you did in medium. It is all about personal preference and what you find easiest. Play around with both options and see which works best for you.
  • Your hammer-ons and pull offs become vital for the faster parts of the songs. One song I found fun to play on hard, was Weezer’s My Name is Jonas. This song has tons of hammer-ons and pull-offs. And in my opinion it is a good song to practice these techniques. Keep on practicing and remember to utilize the practice section of the game when needed. I play on expert and hard, and still am using practice mode often.
  • Double picking/strumming has also become vital to perfect most of the songs. The darkness riff in One, by Metallica is a great example of this. It is mandatory to use the double picking technique in order to complete this song and get a decent score.

Expert mode:
You’ve beaten the game on hard, and feel ready to tryout expert. Now as I’ve said a couple times, I have yet to beat the game on expert, but am working hard, and using many of these same tips I am giving you to advance my skills. You should have 4 stars or more on most of the songs on hard before advancing.

A lot of the same techniques I have discussed in the previous sections, are going to be necessary in this mode. You hopefully by this point have mastered your double picking/strumming, and your hammer-ons and pull-offs. You know when to use your star power as well. Again, in expert and hard I find myself using star power to pass parts of a song, until I have those parts down. If you find yourself able to complete the songs, but still not getting great scores then you need to keep on practicing in practice mode. Your accuracy isn’t the best and needs a little bit of work. The biggest tip for this game… is practice, practice and more practice. The greats at this game didn’t just pick up the guitar and suddenly rock out. They worked at it. Here are a couple tips.

  • Unlock the cheat hyperspeed. If you do a song super fast, when you slow it back down it will seem like a piece of cake. This helps out BIG TIME.
  • If you find yourself having trouble, try going down a difficulty or two. Now that you are doing expert… The other 3 difficulties should be a walk in the park.
  • Have fun. Like I said before, this really is the point of this game. Don’t get frustrated. If you find yourself ready to pull your hair out, then go pound some noobs in Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. And come back to the song. Clear your head. This game was meant to be fun, not mind racking.

I hope this has helped some of you. Hope you all enjoy rocking out. See you on stage!
