Likely objective

Summary

Launch date: 24 october 1962

Mission status: failed

Sputnik 22 (also known as Korabl 11 or Mars 1962A) was a soviet attempt at a Mars probe. The probe's objectives were probably similar to those of the Mars 1 mission.

After launch, the upper-stage booster either separated from the probe or exploded altogether as it was about to send the probe towards Mars; the spacecraft broke into many pieces which later fell to Earth.

The specifics of Sputnik 22 are not known, though it is believed that its design and instruments were similar or identical to Mars 1's.
