Nancy Knox, a 42-year old mother from Nashville, Tennessee, has just sent her special-needs son to a well-known private school that helps children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Although the tuitiion is somewhat affordable, she needed much financial help for her son, and she got it using a government program called education vouchers, where the tuition is paid by the government using taxpayer money. Before going to the Learning Hook school, Knox sent her son to a local public school where he made bad grades and was bullied by other classmates for his disability, "It was hell", said Knox, reminiscing about the experience, "I'm glad my son is getting a quality education out of that horrible academy." Education vouchers, while they do some good, are widely criticized by teacher unions and state governments as stealing money from failing schools that need propping up. The debate on school vouchers is complex and there is a divide in both parties about it. Challenge For Congressmen: Sponsor legislation or campaign against or for school vouchers, you will get $20,000 for your service by groups on both sides. |
