Dear Mom, Today was my first offical day (well, to me anyway) of being a trainer on Althea. I didn't leave New Haven, but instead carried Neigey around and got a feel for the city. It's so much different than Snowpoint! There wasn't any snow first of all, and many of the trainers stared at me in my fluffy white sweater. I must look rather odd here, being from high, frigid mountains. I don't blame them really, but it made no sense to me why I was being picked out of the crowd. If you were here, you'd know why. Everyone here is different. Anyway, today held a few surprises that I enjoyed. You know more than anyone that I'm not a people person. I don't like to talk to people if I can help it. Well, I couldn't today. See, I was walking through New Haven, and I held Neigey in that usual spot in the crook of my neck. I was running my hand along his fur as we walked, and he began making those cute squeals only audible when petting him. I wandered deeper (I think it was deeper anyway) and deeper into the city, and before I knew it, I was lost among buildings and trainers. Each face was different from the last; each edifice (is this too big of a word to use in a letter?) taller or wider than the one before it. So I tried to find someone to help. And let me tell you, the people I found were quite interesting... (259) Edited by Nolan, Apr 24 2010, 08:07:35 PM.

As the girl meandered, something small and soft suddenly whumped into her leg. Before she could react it was trying to scramble up her back, its tiny claws finding easy purchase in her heavy sweater. "Hey! Get off her!" A voice shouted, and someone could be seen trying to get across the street to Mary's position, arm waving frantically above the throng. A small round head with beady eyes poked over the shoulder opposite her Swinub, cocked to the side as it looked innocently up at the girl. "Sennn..?" A man skidded to a halt in front of Mary, somewhat out of breath; most noticeable about him was the fact that his left arm seemed to be missing, the sleeve of his coat flapping somewhat oddly as he stopped. His eyes narrowed as he approached, his attention focused on the Pokémon. "No, Useless, you are not going to convince me that you belong to her. Now c'mon, we..." Suddenly realizing that a guy yelling and charging towards a girl her age might be a bit alarming, he averted his eyes, a little embarrassed. "Er, sorry about... my Sentret, miss. Hope we didn't startle you. Get off!" He hissed the last part, waving his right hand in a shooing motion towards the Pokémon. Edited by Gearhead, Apr 24 2010, 10:51:45 PM.

A one armed man was the first of them. He flailed his only good arm in my direction from across the street. I hadn't even noticed his Sentret--which I later learned had the dreadful name of "Useless"-- was on my back and talking to Neigey! Actually, the Sentret almost looked like it was running away (I don't blame the poor thing, with a name like Useless). Nevertheless, this man startled me, both because of his arm and his harsh manner. Useless was being quite gentle, and I'm sure Neigey didn't mind seeing as he was comfortably napping. I placed Neigey onto the ground, and the Sentret scampered down my arm. I think it was listening to me more than it's trainer, which made me blush somewhat. But then was the time to make my plea. Even if he was harsh, he might have been the only one willing to talk to me for awhile. "Oh...it's no harm, sir." I said, calm and quiet. Trying my hardest not to look at his missing limb, I continued, "You're Sentret is just curious I bet. By the way, you wouldn't happen to know where we are, would you? I seem to have gotten myself lost." (259 + 204 = 463) Edited by Nolan, Apr 25 2010, 03:03:02 PM.

((Sorry it took me a bit to post again.)) "The only thing he's maybe curious about is whether your sweater's edible." As a matter of fact, Useless had pulled up a bit of loose material from her sleeve with his hands and was trying to gnaw a hole in it as they spoke. "If you hadn't set your Pokémon down I'm willing to bet Useless would've pushed him off. He's a menace, and don't let his act fool you about it for a second. Now if you don't mind..." While the Sentret was otherwise occupied, Kyle manage to snatch him as the Pokémon tried to dive behind the girl's back, grimacing as Useless growled and scratched at his arm in protest but not losing his grip on the scruff of his neck. "Ah..." The girl had asked him a question. "Lost..?" Now that he had the Pokémon mostly under control, he was getting a bit self-conscious to have put on such a display to an apparently timid girl many years his junior. Trying to soften his demeanor, smiled apologetically. "I haven't been here too long myself, but from what I've seen so far New Haven itself really isn't that big, though the layout is a little unorthodox. Actually..." He squinted over the girl's head. "I can see the Pokémon Center sign from here. You can probably find your way back to wherever you're staying from there, right..?" But he could almost see the subconscious pleading in her eyes - she didn't seem like the type to approach strangers easily, and had obviously made an effort to do so to him rather than just flinging Useless off and running away from the angry one-armed guy. Kyle supposed it would be a little irresponsible to just leave her to her own devices. "Tell you what. You may have noticed I'm..." he shrugged his left shoulder. "Missing something rather important. I have this little monster to thank for that." Useless tilted his head at Kyle, giving his standard "who, me?" expression, and Kyle realized it might be good to clarify. "Uh, I've got a prosthetic, you see," he added hastily. "It's been glitching out a little ever since I got here though... ah, anyways, I usually take it off while I'm sleeping, and Useless decided to be a little sneak and hide it somewhere in town overnight." Useless finally seemed to have reluctantly settled down, so he cautiously loosened his grip a bit. "I'll get you back to the Pokémon Center and see where we can go from there, but on the way would you mind trying to help me convince this guy to show me where he put my arm?" |

He was a rather nice person if I do say so myself, but also a little odd. Can you believe that he actually asked me to help him find his missing arm? It was awkward enough to acknowledge the fact he was missing it, but to talk about it so bluntly was rather uncomfortable. Anyway, apparently his Sentret had hidden his prosthetic arm (I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the missing limb he asked me about was fake. I don't know how his real arm was taken) from him. I had my doubts of course, but I suppose I did see a little truth to his words as his Sentret (I refuse to call it Useless) started gnawing on his sleeve. But then there was the proposition of his. It was rather comic to me that he asked after he gave me directions, but I had a hard time pushing "no" through my lips. I suppose that's an irony to my personality, right? Anyway, before I digress too much, I agreed, although somewhat reluctantly, to help him. The Pokécenter wasn't too far down the road. Like he had previously mentioned, we could see the famous red roof all the way from where we were (which to be honest wasn't really that far. New Haven is rather small). So, it didn't take us too long to reach our destination. While we walked I kept mostly to myself, petting Neigey more to ease my nerves. I tried once or twice to coerce the Sentret into showing us where the arm was, but to no avail did I get receive even a subtle hint about its whereabouts. Perhaps some Pokémon are malicious afterall? No...I think he was just having fun. I can't say that I would have acted differently had I been in the Sentret's shoes (or paws in this case I suppose). When we reached the Pokécenter, Neigey had awoken and was wiggling around restless in my arms. He'd never done that before, and I think it may have had something do with the Sentret being around. The Sentret was very playful afterall. Neigey needed the excercise as well, so I was more than happy to let him down and watch them play. Only...they didn't play when I let Neigey down. In fact, Neigey didn't even approach the Sentret and instead retreated to my leg. "Hmm?" I questioned, quietly to myself. I'm sure that the man might have heard me, although I think his reply was solely on the fact that he could see where the situation was headed. ((463 + 436 = 899 - And don't worry, I was kinda busy myself.)) |

((I think this'd be a suitable place for me to jump in, eh?)) Vivek was sitting on one of the benches by the wall in the Pokécenter, reading a well-worn, well-read back issue of Birdwatching Biweekly, his favourite magazine. He was re-reading an article about interaction between Pokémon and non-Pokémon birds in the wild. It was still fascinating, even though he had surely read it over a hundred times before. By chance, he glanced up as a girl and a one-armed man walked in. The man had a Sentret -- a familiar, comforting sight, to someone who'd grown up in Johto -- and the girl had a Swinub, which, if he recalled correctly, was also indigenous to Johto, although he'd never seen one in person before. He'd read about them, of course, but that just wasn't quite the same. He smiled a little to himself; this island was so interesting. "Hooot, (Howdy,)" Tictoc greeted the other Pokémon, taking a hop towards them. Even though he wasn't normally a conversation-starter, he found it comforting, too, to see familiar kinds of Pokémon. "Hoothoooot? (How're y'all?)" he rocked back and forth a little and fluttered his wings jovially. Vivek, surprised by Tictoc's taking initiative, sat up a little straighter and set his magazine down on his lap, watching the other two trainers to gauge their response to his Pokémon's sudden forwardness in interaction. He waved awkwardly at them and tried to smile; it wasn't that he was feeling unfriendly, but more that he was nervous as all hell. [242/242] Edited by Pig_catapult, May 4 2010, 11:00:16 PM.

Kyle's first visit to Althea's sole Pokémon Center had seen it packed full of people and injured Pokémon; it was almost empty now, but then again it had been evening last time, weary Trainers trying to scrabble their way back into New Haven's borders before nightfall. He wasn't sure exactly what was up with the curfew yet, but he had heard enough dangerous rumors to piece a few things together. The girl hadn't managed to coerce anything out of Useless, and her Pokémon seemed a little shy, but as they entered the Center a Hoothoot of all things approached them, cooing at the other Pokémon in apparent greeting. Kyle was a bit surprised, as he hadn't been expecting to see such a mundanely familiar Pokémon on Althea; most of what he'd encountered so far had been much more exotic, to him at least. Useless had managed to squirm his way out from Kyle's grasp and skittered cautiously towards the small bird, dim memories of his kind being hunted by Noctowl putting him on edge. Raising himself to his full height balanced on his tail, he puffed himself out and tried to look intimidating. Kyle couldn't imagine what the chittering he spat out could've meant, but it sounded awfully condescending. A young boy who approached them from a nearby seat seemed to be the Hoothoot's Trainer. "Ah, don't mind him," Kyle sighed in exasperation. "He's got no manners. I think that's a very fine Hoothoot you've got there, and I've seen plenty." He turned to the girl. "Give me just a second, um... never exchanged names, did we? You can call me Kyle." They might have been significantly younger than himself, but Kyle refused to be referred to as 'Mr. Davidson.' Waiting for the girl to reply, he then approached the Center's main desk, waving a greeting to the nurse on duty. "Excuse me, do you guys have a 'lost and found' here?" "Not officially," she replied, arching an eyebrow at what he was obviously missing. "If you need treatment, we really only specialize in Pokémon, particularly in a case as... serious as yours seems to be." "Exactly how common are dismemberments here..? Nevermind, don't answer that." The nurse seemed a little amused now, and Kyle was trying not to get embarrassed. "I'm actually looking for my prosthetic arm, thanks." "Odd thing to lose." She made a show of shuffling under the counter, but it was obvious she was just playing along. "Thanks anyways, I'll look elsewhere. But, ah, if one happens to turn up..." The nurse rolled her eyes and nodded, and Kyle turned back to where he had left the kids to introduce themselves to each other, suddenly worrying that it might have been a bad idea to take his eyes off Useless for so long. Fortunately it seemed that he was still occupied with trying to assert his superiority over the Hoothoot. "C'mon, Useless, you're not impressing anyone." But Neigey didn't keep this act up long. He promptly returned to his drowsy nature when another new face greeted my growing number of Althean aquaintances. At first it was simply a Hoothoot, to which the Sentret skittered away to meet. That's why Neigey became calm. The Hoothoot was rather friendly actually (of course at this point I was thinking everyone inside New Haven was friendly; I hadn't met a mean soul yet). I didn't spot the Hoothoot's trainer at first, as he was sitting on a bench a bit further away. He seemed really shy as he waved and looked at us. I almost felt like he was summing me up, but then I realized he probably just wanted to see what we were going to do to his poor Hoothoot. I was just watching and taking everything in. I wasn't really sure what to say or how to react. Neigey seemed content enough that-- I can't believe I'm going to start using its name-- Useless had left. The Sentret was off in the distance making a big scene. If I've ever seen a ham of a Pokémon, it was this Sentret. Meanwhile, Kyle, as he introduced himself as, quickly talked with the nurse about his arm issue, and then turned to me for my name. I always forget to introduce myself because of how quiet I am. I quickly told him I was just "Mary" and left it at that. Afterwhich I decided to go pay a visit to the Hoothoot's trainer. I don't know why, but I didn't feel the need to be so quiet around him. Maybe it's because he looked shy and reminded me of myself. I don't know. What about you mom? How are you doing at home? I've written so much about my time here, but I can't stop thinking about you and dad. I really do miss home. I never thought that I'd be in situations like these, surrounded by people and Pokémon. I'm really excited for the tournament too. Neigey seems really lazy whenever you see him, but it's only because of how much energy he has to stock up on for battles. By the time my first match starts he'll be ready to take anything on. (899 + 378 = 1,277 - It's a good idea to start now, because you need a final word count for grading. If you wait until later you'll have to count each post instead of just going post-by-post right now.) |

Tictoc instinctively reacted to the Sentret's mocking and display of size by standing tip-toe and puffing himself up. There was no way he'd manage to look at tall as the Sentret, but he was probably more spherical, and that had to count for something, right? They perhaps should count themselves lucky that there were no members of the Jigglypuff family present, or they would have both been supremely outdone. "Hooooooot! (I just said 'Howdy', fer heaven's sake!)" he protested, flapping his wings and scowling. Vivek was getting more and more concerned about what he was afraid was going to break out into a scuffle between the two round Pokémon. Chewing his lower lip nervously, he tapped twice on the face of his wristwatch with a fingernail -- a little noise that an onomatopoeia couldn't quite be placed to. Tictoc immediately turned to look at his human upon hearing the sound, and he felt a wave of guilt wash over him; he (quite literally) deflated, and took a little hop back. "Hoot hooot. (Sorry, Friend.)" Vivek pulled his memo pad from his pocket, and flipped it open to the front page. He turned it around and held it out to show the girl, if she was interested. Hi. I'm Vivek. ☺ There was a BIG smiley face under the text. Quite the contrast to the sort of deer-in-headlights look that was actually on his face.
