Sophia averted her eyes as she stopped talking, staring as the red light erupted from within the pokéball, gathering around the small creature as it enveloped him and merged with its body before returning to the inside of the tiny sphere, carrying the other girl’s pokémon. While she had seen pokéballs before, this was the first time she had ever seen one so close, and felt a bit of lingering curiosity poke at the edges of her consciousness through the tiredness. “Would Gale like having one for himself?” she thought idly, wondering if he’d be comfortable in such a cramped space.

Her inner musings were interrupted, however, when the Trainer bent to pick up the pokéball, breaking her out of her reverie. She saw the other girl raise her eyebrow at her, and, for a second, thought that she had somehow angered her with her words. She thought back furiously on what she had said, but couldn’t recall exactly what had been spoken. Maybe she had said something offensive? Before she could apologize, however, the young woman’s voice rang out, carried by the air and echoed lightly by the building walls as she spoke.

"Yeah, let's stick together, it's freaky out here. I'm sorry about Shez, she is... difficult. I was trying to stop her from running off, and I guess she decided that putting both of us at risk out here without Pokémon was more fun than making it back to New Haven alive. I'm Roz, by the way. Sorry we met in such ...obnoxious circumstances. Your Pokémon is going to be okay, right?"

Sophia felt a bit of tension leave her body as she realized the other girl…”Roz,” she chided herself mentally, wasn’t angry at her. Her words, however, raised a point she had forgotten about. She had heard stories in New Haven about what happened outside the community at night, and would rather not be nearby when the sun left the sky. She couldn’t be caught here with Gale, especially not when he was hurt like this; it’d be terribly dangerous for both of them. She shuddered for a second before banishing that train of thought; it wouldn’t do to be paralyzed by fear in such a situation.

“You’re right, we should stay together. I haven’t found anything dangerous yet in here, but I’ve heard stories about what happens at night. I…uh, my name is Sophia,” she said, speaking a little more loudly than she had last time. She was supposed to show a bit more of confidence, after all; at least, that was what Mr. Allen had said to her nearly every day since she had met him. “And this is Gale. I’m sure he’ll be fine if we get him back home.” Her voice trailed off as she turned her eyes back to the baby pokémon in her arms; her gaze following the black patches of fur that zigzagged across his small body. Gale smiled at her reassuringly, yet she felt her own mind fill with doubt. “What if Gale is badly injured in one of these fights?” Her thoughts betrayed her inner feelings as she attempted to dispel them, yet the tiny sliver of uncertainty nagged at her consciousness, eating away at her confidence. She saw Roz begin to walk away, motioning for her to follow, and she hastened to reach the other girl’s position, matching her pace as she walked to her left, carefully avoiding the debris that littered the street.

“Is…Shez?” she asked hesitantly, unsure of the other pokémon’s name, as she raised her eyes once more to meet Roz’s own. “Alright? I know Gale hit her hard a few times, so I hope she wasn’t hurt too much either.” A small thread of satisfaction ran through her as she considered the other pokémon’s state; she surely deserved it for attacking Gale! She felt guilt wash through her soon after that thought, though, and quenched both emotions swiftly, averting her gaze. Shez was hurt, and she needed attention, just as Gale did. Leaving someone suffering was never right. As the blue pokémon stirred a bit in her arms, though, making himself a bit more comfortable, she turned her eyes back to him. He could have been the one unconscious. He could even have died from that last shock. And here she was, enrolled in a tournament, putting his life at stake only because she had thought a pokémon battle looked cool on TV. It wasn’t fair to him. She only needed to sit back and give orders, while her friend, her steadfast companion, was hurt. Self-doubt assailed her as she considered her decision to become a Trainer.

“Can I continue to be a Trainer if I can’t battle because I’m afraid of Gale being hurt?”

The thought echoed back and forth within her mind, feeding on her uncertainty and growing exponentially until she felt like she would not be able to hold it back further. Maybe she should quit. Gale’s eyes stared at her quietly, watching her inner struggle impassively, serene yet fiercely determined. Sophia’s mind, desperately seeking an anchor amidst her inner chaos, focused on his eyes, and thought back to something she had been told once by her father. “It is only through struggle and hardship that we can grow as people.” She swallowed, her throat dry, as she realized that part of being a Trainer was learning that Gale could be hurt; it would happen eventually. “It has happened already,” she thought, as she traced with her sight yet another burn mark, joining the other wounds that had resulted from the fight.

She licked her lips briefly as her determination hardened, pushing away the doubts, at least for now. If they could learn something new from each battle, something that would help them become better people, then it would be okay. Sophia sighed, feeling the tension that had filled her body for the past seconds wash away, and she smiled at Roz. “Yes, I’m sure Gale and Shez will be okay.” She said, filled with renewed confidence. A soft, tired “Lurio!” echoed her statement cheerfully, as the small, blue pokémon turned his head to look at Roz as well.
