The sun rose lazily as dawn came to the Johto region, tinging the sky with soft hues of orange. The tang of the ocean filled the air around the heliport in Olivine City, the sea breeze carrying it far beyond the shore to the fields surrounding the town, where the landing zone was located. Having been built recently, it only had space for a single aircraft. A black, unadorned helicopter stood quietly, awaiting its passengers, the pilot already inside the cabin, seemingly eager to take off. Said passengers were standing still next to the machine; the luggage had already been placed inside, the suitcase and guitar case having taken up nearly half of the space inside the small cabin, but leaving more than enough room for the slender girl and her blue-furred companion.

“Rio, lurio, riolu.” The small pokémon spoke reassuringly, staring up at his mistress. The girl, however, was busy staring forward, her hands clammy and closed into fists, her shoulders tense. The vaguely canine pokémon nudged her leg with his arm, and her eyes snapped into focus as she looked downwards. She smiled at Gale and nodded, before taking a deep breath. Letting it out slowly, she walked forward and climbed into the cabin, strapping herself down as securely as possible. Gale followed her, settling comfortably at her side, next to the suitcase. The pilot nodded and raised his thumb in salute, passing the girl a pair of headphones and a paper bag. “Just in case!” he said, winking at her.

Sophia reached forward to grasp both items, placing the bag next to her. She wasn’t completely sure she wouldn’t need it. Her fingers seemed to lack their usual coordination as she attempted to put on the headphones, her hands trembling slightly. A lump formed in her throat as she saw the pilot move his hands towards the controls, the engine whirring into life above. Bits of debris and dust flew away from the helicopter as the rotor picked up speed, and the automatic doors closed shut. Gale, sensing her discomfort, placed his paw on top of her hand and nestled close to her.
As the aircraft lifted, she suddenly heard the headphones coming to life, the pilot’s voice ringing through her ears.

“Hey, mind if we take a little detour? I thought you might like to see the countryside and all, seeing as you don’t have any flying pokémon to take you around. It’s a different sight from above, I tell you. What do you say?”

Sophia’s mental processes shut down as she heard him speak; she wanted to be off the thing as soon as possible, and the pilot was suggesting that she stay up even longer? She hung her head and closed her eyes as she felt her stomach lurch. The pilot grinned, taking the head movement as a sign of assent, and pushed the controls forward, heading towards the mainland. Sophia closed her eyes tighter as the machine tilted, and grabbed the seat tightly with both hands. She felt it stabilize after a moment, and all seemed to stay still for a moment. Still, she kept her eyes shut for a few minutes, her heart beating furiously against her chest as she imagined the height at which she had to be. What would happen to them if the engine failed now?

“Miss, open your eyes. You have to see this!”

Sophia was broken out of her reverie once more by the voice of the pilot, and reflexively opened one eye. The other soon followed, and she stared in awe through the window, the sight being nearly enough to make her forget her current predicament. Below her stretched the forests of the Johto region, the Bell Tower rising proudly against the mountains that surrounded it. Large pastures filled the area below, filled with Miltanks and Tauros, probably belonging to the MooMoo Farm. The pokémon looked tiny from this height. Roads and small houses stretched below, empty and seemingly devoid of life at this early hour. Gale stood next to the window, staring with similar amazement at the sight below.

“Amazing, ain’t it? That’s why I love to fly. There’s just nothing on the ground that can compare to the beauty of a dawn seen from the skies.”

Not having seen many other awe-inducing sights before, Sophia wasn’t too sure that she was qualified to agree. It was certainly beautiful, though. The aircraft lurched to the side for a moment, and she gasped, once again feeling her heart leap. The worst thing was that if the thing decided to break down, there was absolutely nothing she could do to save herself. She imagined the engines stopping, the aircraft crashing to the ground…

“Haha, don’t worry miss, that’s just a bit of turbulence. We’ll be heading straight down to Althea now, hang on tight. We’ll be there sooner than you know.”

Sophia nodded, not trusting her stomach enough to open her mouth and speak. She felt ashamed at being so irrationally afraid of something, but couldn't stop the shiver that ran through her body as she recalled her past train of thought. Closing her eyes once more, she attempted, unsuccessfully, to calm her frayed nerves, taking deep breaths. Gale, completely unaware, remained by the window, happily staring at the landscape below as it changed to sea, the waves forming tiny patches of foam against reef. An eternity seemed to pass as the aircraft continued towards its destination, occasionally lurching to the sides whenever it hit a small pocket of conflicting air currents. It was with relief that she received the next transmission from the pilot.

“Okay, here we are, New Haven. We’ll begin landing in a moment, so sit back straight and wait a little bit more. We’re almost there.”

She felt the aircraft begin to slow down as the pilot began the descent, the pit in her stomach growing as the aircraft lost altitude. With a final lurch that shook the entire cabin, the helicopter touched down on the island and was still, the rotors slowing down and stopping entirely before the cabin doors opened. She barely paid attention as she released the security belts and returned the headphones; she thought she heard the pilot say something about headaches or migraines, but her brain was not capable of processing human speech at the moment. Numbly putting on her backpack and grabbing hold of her belongings, she stepped down and nearly fell to the ground as she was assaulted by dizziness; the ground seemingly moving, much like the helicopter had when passing through turbulent areas. The pilot, seeing her perilously close to falling backwards, moved to help her carry the suitcase, carrying it inside the small office that stood next to the helipad. With some difficulty, she followed, Gale staring worriedly at his friend as he walked beside her.

“Well miss, I think that’s all. I wish you luck on the tournament. Who knows, maybe next time we meet I can show you a bit more of the scenery around.”

Sophia shook her head as she opened her mouth to speak; it took her a few tries, but she finally managed to say something.”Thanks, but I’m not sure I want to get on an aircraft anytime soon.” She paused for a moment before continuing. “The view was great, but I can’t handle being that high up. I’m sorry.” The man chuckled before raising his hand in salute. “I noticed you were a bit pale. Still, lots of people are like that at the beginning, don’t worry.” He gave her a thumbs up and turned away, walking back towards his helicopter. Sighing, she sat on a nearby chair, attempting to recover her sense of balance.
