[parent-class=active]Profile Journey Computer[table-class=profile]
[tab-class=profile-info][tabsection][tabs] [tab=Appearance] Physically speaking, Vivek is probably the opposite of imposing. He's very thin, awkward, on the short side of things, and the way he carries himself only makes him look smaller than he really is. Meeting him on the street, he's not someone most anyone would peg as a confident sort; he acts nervous, as if someone might come up and shove him in a locker at any moment, and he tries to avoid making eye contact. He tends to stand and walk pidgeon-toed, and is very fidgety. . . but as soon as you put that boy in front of something he can climb, it's like all the awkwardness and fear just drops away. Whether it's in a tall tree or on a cliff face, Vivek seems to be more at home the further his feet are from the ground. Vivek isn't very fashion-oriented. He's a T-shirt and jeans kinda guy. And a camo socks guy, but mostly a T-shirts and jeans guy. He generally prefers plain, earthy colors that don't draw too much attention to himself. He wears a plastic, waterproof, crush-resistant digital wristwatch on his left wrist that's built for utility and has an alarm, compass, and altimeter, as well as displaying the date and time, of course, and usually keeps his PokéTech fastened to his backpack. He also wears a stainless steel medical identification bracelet on his right wrist, engraved with his name, his parents' home phone number [(285) 555-8940], and the words "DOES NOT SPEAK". He additionally usually has a pair of quite nice binoculars stashed in a case in his backpack, so he can do some birdwatching once he gets to the top of something. He carries a memo pad and mechanical pencil with him at all times, because, while he can sign fluently, most other Pokémon trainers don't understand sign language.[/tab] [tab=Biography] From birth, Vivek has had hypersensitive vocal cords that hurt when used. Because learning to speak as an infant is based mostly upon positive reinforcement, and pain is the body's own means of negative reinforcement, he never learned to effectively make any voiced sounds. Luckily for him, his older brother, Sirin, had been born with a milder form of the same condition, and so his parents were well-prepared for this, letting him acquire Johtoan Sign Language at a very early age. While the physical component of his mutism has never prevented him from producing non-voiced sounds with his mouth, and, in fact, as a very young child he made his best approximations of spoken words that way, once he started going to school, he stopped using those, too, when anyone other than his immediate family was around, because his classmates laughed and made fun of him for it. This was the start of a very unhappy school life. As it happens, "just ignore them" doesn't make namecalling or rock-throwing hurt less, "they'll stop picking on you if you stop reacting to them" is a lie, and "the only reason they bully you is because they're jealous" is a damn lie. For Vivek's fifth birthday, Sirin gave him a baby Hoothoot – since birds were, and still are, his favorite animal, and Sirin had rescued the little chick during a recent storm – and a plastic wristwatch. Vivek was fascinated by how his new Pokémon friend rocked so steadily to the "tick. . . tock. . . tick. . . tock. . ." of his new watch, and that was how Tictoc got his name. Tictoc tried his best to protect Vivek from bullies growing up, but Pokémon weren't allowed at school because they were too dangerous and too distracting, so the most Tictoc could do most of the time was walk with him to and from school, and try to take a hit for him whenever possible. In the third grade, Vivek discovered that he was actually much better at climbing than the other kids in his class were, and that he could easily get to places they couldn't reach, like, say, the roof. This discovery marked the day where he was no longer just "Owlface", but rather "Stupid Monkey Owlface". Of course, then the bullies told on him and he got in trouble for being on the roof, while the bullies didn't get in trouble at all for chasing him up there in the first place. For the record, "If you stop running, they can't chase you" is really crappy advice, because if you stop running, then they're going to catch you, and then they're going to beat you up. Things slowly got better as Vivek got older, and his classmates discovered better (or at least more time-consuming) things to do than focus on tormenting a quiet kid who keeps to himself and doesn't bother anyone. He still sometimes ended up getting stuffed in lockers in high school, and his bike got stolen enough times that he'd stopped bothering to replace it, but overall he managed to graduate a surprisingly well-adjusted individual, given the circumstances. It was after graduation that he (with encouragement from his family and therapist) decided it was time to leave home for a proper Pokémon journey, to have some awesome adventures and discover new things before coming back to start college, and Alternia seemed like just the right place to do that.[/tab] [tab=Personality]Vivek has three main hobbies: Reading and writing, climbing, and birds. "Birds" is totally a hobby. Back before he started travelling and it became impractical to carry that much birdseed around, he'd get up every morning at the crack of dawn, and, still in his Pidgey-print pajamas and Murkrow slippers, go out to feed the birds in his parents' yard. It was that quiet time, between sunrise and his mother calling him for breakfast, that was his favorite part of every day, when he had a chance to commune with his feathered friends and forget. He really misses them, and the tearful goodbye with them the day he left to start his Pokémon journey in earnest was possibly more painful than the one with his parents and brother. Humans can read letters, after all. Speaking of letters, Vivek frequently writes letters to his family. He doesn't always get to send those letters in a timely fashion, but he writes them anyway, and usually ends up mailing several at once. He handwrites them with a calligraphy pen and black ink whenever possible, and his calligraphy is gorgeous. He also has several notebooks and a scrapbook that he carries in his backpack for when a creative fancy strikes him. When it comes to personal interactions, Vivek is, as stated before, generally quite timid. That's not to say he doesn't doesn't have strong opinions about things, but he can be reluctant to share them. He has little faith in the competence of most authority figures, having found in the past that while they often talk the talk, most balk when it comes time to walk the walk and do something about a problem. If there's one thing he hates most in all the world, it's a bully, and, while he's never been one to stand up for himself much, he's usually more than willing to stand up for others. In regards to reading material, his favorite kind are nature guidebooks. Anything with pictures of plants or birds or bugs or rocks and descriptions of where they're found and what they do and how to identify one in the field, he will eagerly read cover to cover. Beyond that, he generally tends to prefer happy stories over sad ones, and nonfiction over fiction, but he's secretly kinda a sap for fairy tales and stories of grand adventures. His favorite pastime after birdwatching is to climb a tree, leave his worries on the ground, and get lost in a good book.[/tab][/tabs][/tabsection] Edited by Crosse, Oct 2 2014, 09:55 PM.
