Southstone: Gatsby Research Center
[Inside the Research Center - Choosing Your First Pokemon]

The Gatsby Research Center sat atop a whitestone cliff that overlooked the ocean below. The building itself was of a modern architecture; it was a square, two story, stark white building with many large windows. The entire wall of the western side of the building however was completely made of glass. It was out this western wall that one could look down upon the jagged cliffside, which dropped down into the ocean below. Upon entering the establishment one would find themselves at the entrance to a rather large lobby area with a balcony overlooking it from the second floor. At the far side of the lobby
was a large, semicircle shaped, glass reception desk that was set up against the back wall. Off to the east and the west of the reception area were two, long hallways that lead back to the laboratory and other areas that were off-limits to unauthorized personnel.

As you entered the Gatsby Research Center yourself, you couldn't help but feel slightly overwhelmed with the anxiety and anticipation of receiving your very first Pokemon. You walked across the tiled lobby, listening to the echoing sound of your own footsteps as you made your way up to the reception desk. There was a young woman sitting behind the desk, who appeared to be Profesor Gatsby's secretary. She looked up to you with a big smile and stood up from her seat. "You must be Matt Cauthin." she said, holding out her hand to you. "We've been expecting you!"

"Well it appears as if I have impeccable timing." said a voice off to your side.

Professor Gatsby was standing in the eastern hallway, tucking a clipboard up under his arm as he placed his pen behind his ear. He was a surprisingly young-looking gentleman in a classic white lab coat, with raven colored hair that was obviously unkempt. "Hello Simon, I was just about to page you." said the receptionist with a smile. "We have her Mr. Matt Cauthin from Goldenrod City in the Johto Region. He's here for his starter Pokemon." Professor Gatsby moved out of the hallway and towards you in front of the reception desk. "Indeed he is." he said, holding out his hand to you as well. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

After shaking your hand, Professor Gatsby pulled out a key from his coat pocket and moved behind the desk. The receptionist scooted herself away from the desk in her chair, allowing the professor to bend down beneath the desk and unlock a drawer. As he stood back up, he stuffed his keys back into his pocket, and pulled out an assortment of items: the first item he pulled out and placed onto the desk was a black bracelet, the second item he had set out on top of the desk was a box labeled "Capture Pack", and finally the last item he pulled out was a tray that had three Poke Balls placed on top of it.

"Firstly," said Professor Gatsby as he picked up the black metal object from the table and handed it over to you, "here is your very own Mega Ring. I only give out one per trainer, so be sure not to lose it." Next he picked up the box and opened it up. "Here is your complimentary 'Capture Pack'." he said, revealing its contents to you before as he started handing them over. Eagerly, you strapped your new PokéTech to your wrist and placed your items into your inventory. "And now for the fun part!" said Professor Gatsby as he pulled over the tray of three Poke Balls.

"What I have here are the three Pokémon that are currently available to starting trainers." he said with a massive grin on his face. "This will be one of the biggest decisions in your entire life, so choose wisely. Now without further adieu!" Professor Gatsby pulled all three Poke Balls off of the tray and threw them up into the air in front of him. "Come on out kiddos!"

Each of the Poke Balls burst open mid air, releasing a red light that shot down to the ground and began to form the silhouettes of three small creatures. When the light broke, three small Pokémon were revealed to you. On the right was the grass type Pokemon, Snivy, with his arms folded across his chest and a grumpy look on his face. The Pokémon in the middle was the fire type Pokemon, Charmander, who was joyfully jumping up and down with her arms outstretched to you, just begging to be picked up. And finally on the left was the water type Pokemon, Totodile, who suddenly seemed to discover the existence of his tail and began to chase it around in circles. What's your choice, trainer?

The sounds of waves crashing against the cliffs below calmed Matt's nerves as he stepped into the Research Centre. Trying to remain calm on the outside he couldn't help but want to laugh and shout. He had made it. He thought back to that first step he had taken outside the Bike Shop. He had come a long way from that moment. The ferry had made a brief stop in Vermillion City where Matt had gone to watch some battles in the gym. He was in heaven there. He had only had a couple of hours before the ferry departed but what he had seen was truly stunning. Sure there were the challengers that got thoroughly trounced by Lt. Surge, either their Pokemon were just under-trained or their battle skill was severely lacking. In the short time he was there there was one challenger though that took Matt's breath away. He matched Surge move for move and the battle couldn't have been closer! Eventually the challenger scraped through. He couldn't wait to see the aftermath but that memory bolstered his desire to complete his own gym challenge. Now, here he was.

His nerves resurfaced as he stepped into the clean lobby of the centre. Unable to even speak when the Professor introduced himself, Matt just shook his hand in awe. He continued listening in silence and taking what was offered to him. Unzipping his backpack he just threw the items into it before turning back for the most important part. This was it. The moment he was waiting for. His very first Pokemon. His mind was running wild imagining future battles and the challenges that lay ahead of him. The professor had released the three choices he had and Matt surveyed the Pokemon in front of him.

FIrst up was a snake-like Pokemon that looked pissed off about the fact that he had been summoned out of his Pokeball. He didn't really know much about this Pokemon having come from Johto but a small bit of his studying brought his name forth from somewhere. Snivy. Matt wasn't too interested in this Pokemon as his attention was drawn to the two others that he knew and loved. Totodile, a Pokemon native to his home region, and Charmander that he was pretty sure every trainer in the world could recognise. Both looked extremely happy to be out of their ball. Totodile was happily chasing his own tail while Charmander was stretching her arms out towards Matt. How could he resist. Matt scooped the little lizard into his arms and a warm feeling flooded through him, not only from the little flame on her tail. He knew this was the right choice.

"I'll take this little girl please!" Matt said, suddenly finding his voice. With a quick glance at the other two Pokemon Matt gave a little nod and placed the Charmander at his feet. "Yes I definitely would like her. Thank you!" With the first big decision out of the way, and with his first Pokemon readyto befriend and train, he turned his mind to the journey ahead. He had seen a gym in the town and he set his mind on conquering that gym before heading out across the region to explore and train further. He knew though that there was some work to be done before hand. More Pokemon would be required and a lot of training. Both to perfect his own ability and to get to know his new Pokemon. Not sure of the region Matt turned to the Professor and his secretary.

"Ummmmm...Thanks again. I'm very new here and was wondering if you knew of anywhere nearby I can train and encounter new Pokemon?" Positive that one of them would direct him to a good place to begin he shouldered his rucksack and got ready to head out......

Southstone: 'Marble Market'
[Left of the Research Center]
[Clear Skies]

The smell of new shoes. That’s the only thing I can think of to track down similar things in experience. I mean, walking in there, wanting new experience, you look at the options and pick one. Then you’re set for life with a new pair of shoes. Only you now have a pair of Charmander leather, potentially fire breathing shoes. You know what on second thought, the comparison is bonkus, let me just get to the important bit, shall I?

Without much of thought, the eagerly grabby-handed Charmander nuzzled into your neck, her happily smiling in your embrace. Once she heard the definite choice, she smiled even wider, growled in happiness and slightly clawed in your clothing. The other two Pokémon let out their personal responses too. The Totodile let his interest in his own tail linger and looked up at the newly formed duo before him, tilting his head before looking around. He shrugged lightly and let his eyes scan the room, before the corner of his eye picked up the blue tip of his tail again, His head edged down, as he went back to the chase in full circle. The Snivy on the other hand just pulled up his nose even higher, as if to say that he didn’t care at all, in the slightest.

Not a second after the realization sank on every single living being there, two red beams where aimed at the two Pokémon who weren’t chosen and put back into their respective poke balls. Simon Gatsby, the professor, smiled at the newly formed trainer. “Great Choice there!” He cheered for you. As he handed you the poke ball belonging to the fire pokemon. He then walked over to his assistant, and bent over the back of her chair, looking onto a computer screen; a few minutes of silence and friendly looks later, the professor straightened his back and brought his hands together in a clap. “Now. “ He began. “Your Charmander is now in the system, if you want to nickname the little rascal, you’ll just have to input it in your PokéTech, and it’ll be updated to the system afterwards. Every new Pokémon caught, will be added automatically.” He explained. Then hearing the request you made.

He brought his fingers to his chin and tapped it in thought. He then turned around and looked over the cliffs the building was standing on. His eyes being caught by a couple of water Pokémon and fishing poles next to the lab. “I might have an idea.” He said, then putting his hand on the shoulder of his assistant. “Would you be so friendly to escort Matt to the ‘Marble Market’?” He asked. He then nodded to you, and walked off, back to his business. “Ehm…S-sure!” The girl reacted. She then got up and walked out in front of you. “Matt if you would be so nice to follow me?” She asked. Would you follow she would lead you outside of the building, around the building to a small open patch of stalls, with several people behind them. The market place was looking over a steep cliff, right next to the Research Centre. “This is the Marble Market, a community marketplace being set up once every few weeks, for inhabitants of houses nearby, near the Pass, or for travelers. You should be able to find some wild pokemon, or trainers here.” The assistant said, warmly, looking at you. She then took your hands, and shook them, bowing a little. “Good luck on your travels!” She wished him good luck.

As soon as she trailed off. You could hear the burly men yelling out how fresh their fish was, or others how healthy their newly baked bread. It was certainly a food market over anything for Pokémon here, Or judging by the fishing hooks and carpeting tools, more for the regular life of people too. A sign on the fishing supply store specifically read ‘Not for use on pokemon.’ In other words, you wouldn't find an Old Rod there soon, or any other Pokémon items. This place was purely for non-Pokémon fishermen, and human consumables. And it'd be packed up and gone by the time the evening colors would paint the sky again. What you did see, was a rather mischievous looking feline sitting on the nook of the fish stall, peering down and eyeing the fresh fish-scented goods below. She licked her lips and her tail swayed lustful for the food. Elsewhere you could see a trainer in front of some fruits stall, about to buy some strawberries, on his belt a poke ball, a single one.

So there are your options. Or you could just walk away all together, your choice, new traveler.

Matt watched the other two Pokemon respond to his decision. Neither seemed too bothered by their predicament. Totodile was busy chasing his tail again and Snivy seemed to be far above the whole thing anyway. With a flash of red both disappeared, ready to be selected by another trainer undoubtedly, and Matt took the Pokeball that the professor handed to him. This was it! He was officially a trainer. Matt held the Charmander closer to his chest as the professor explained nick-naming. Matt didn't really get that, unless Charmander could tell him her name he wasn't going to make one up. For now she would just be Charmander. Matt's attention was drawn back to the professor as he answered his request.

The Marble Market. That sounded interesting even if there weren't Pokemon available it would be a good place to search for a fight. Matt placed Charmander back on the floor and followed the assistant out of the door. Charmander happily skipped along behind him and the sight of that made him crack a grin. Here he was in a distant land, far away from home, and he had made the first step. His thoughts drifted home and he quickly tapped out a message on his Poketech. He sent a brief summary of what had occurred so far to his parents, and to Jamie, and that he would be back someday to see them again. A little tug on the bottom of his shorts raised his head from the wrist gadget and he noticed they'd stopped.

Matt awkwardly returned the handshake and bid farewell to the assistant. She was pretty and Matt had half a mind to chase after her and get her number. Reality brought him back around as the sudden stench of fish hit his nostrils. Even Charmander was wrinkling her nose at the stench of the market. Matt wandered into the crowded marketplace and let his mind wander into the noises and aromas that battered at his ear drums. Here and there vendors were shouting their wares and Matt stopped at various stalls to have a look. There was nothing there that he needed right now but he noted the amount of produce and tools that were on sale. He could imagine his parents enjoying this town, they always did want to live at a seaside port. A small beep brought his attention back to his Poketech.

Well done sweetie! Hope you're enojying yourself! xxx It was from his mother. It made Matt smile again until a small crash made him look around. In his daze at the market he had completely forgotten about Charmander. The little lizard had been merrily following along behind him checking out everything it could. While Matt was reading his Poketech Charmander had tried to pick up a small jar that had rolled across from one of the stalls. It was slightly too big and slightly too slippery for her and as she was carrying it back the jar had slipped form her grip and smashed on the floor. Matt saw tears welling up in her eyes, I mean she had only been trying to help, and quickly scooped the lizard up and headed off deeper into the market before anyone could charge him for the jar.

Matt stopped a couple of minutes later and placed Charmander back on the ground. Kneeling in front of her he wiped the little tear from her eye. "It's not your fault Charmander. You were only trying to help, I know that. Next time perhaps tell me and I can make sure that you don't get hurt." Charmander gave a little nod and gave Matt a brief hug. She turned around and let out an excited squeal. Matt looked up and spotted the Meowth sat on the fish stall. His eyes were also drawn to the trainer stood at a fruit stall with a single Pokeball on his belt. Matt's mind raced. Here was his first opportunity for a battle. The trainer would probably give Charmander and him more battle experience but he would need more Pokemon on his team if he was to attempt to take on the gyms in this region. Meowth it was then. Hopefully Charmander would get some experience and he would get a new team member.

Matt shouted at the Meowth to get its attention before issuing his first commands ever to Charmander. "OK Charmander, here goes! I'm quite new at this but I used to study battling quite a bit. Let's begin with [attack=Focus]ing on your Attack stat, channel some energy into your claws. Then attack the Meowth with two [attack=scratch] attacks in quick succession. Try to avoid her attacks as much as possible, those claws definitely look sharp." The little lizard nodded her head in understanding and began to focus. Matt stuck a hand behind him into his rucksack and pulled out a Pokeball. Dropping it into one of his short pockets he readied himself to capture the Meowth. If Charmander managed to land both of his attacks then the cat should be sufficiently weakened to be captured. He wanted to see the capabilities of this Meowth as well, it might be a bit detrimental to Charmander's health but she could take it. At least he hoped she could. He would attempt a capture as soon as Charmander had landed her attacks and he had seen the Meowth in action. Here goes nothing..........

Rebuild the World in Ice

As the sun beat down on the marketplace, you were about to start your first battle as a real trainer! How exciting! Having decided to recruiting a new member to your team instead of battling a trainer right away, I think you made the right choice. Of course, well see how the battle turns out to really see how your decision was.

Charmander started the round off by quickly focusing on his attack so that his follow up attack would do a larger amount of damage. However, the Meowth saw this and made the rather smart decision to Scratch at Charmader since he was open. The attack ended up doing quite a large amount of damage to your poor Charmander but he was still holding strong. She retaliated by attacking with her own Scratch attacks, hitting the small cat twice in quick succession. The Meowth staggered a little bit but was still holding strong. She charged in for her own scratch attack again and then went back to her side of the battlefield while giving a rather mean hiss at Charmander.

Seeing the Meowth weakened, you let the Pokéball you were holding fly through the air, hitting the Meowth dead on and sucking her in with a flash of light. The ball hit the floor afterwards and started shaking back and forth. After a few times of it doing this, the ball gave off a 'ding' and stopped shaking, letting you know that you've caught your first Pokémon. Congratulations! I'm sure your parents back home would love to hear that you've already caught your first addition to the team! Well, that was rather exciting. You didn't even have to do a second round into the battle unlike most other people! You might want to look into getting your team healed though, now that you actually have a team and not just a partner. Of course, that was completely up to you. I don't know how much longer your friends will be able to last though if they stay like this though.

Matt watched the battle with great anticipation. This was the first test of his skills as a trainer. If it went badly thenall of his hopes and dreams would be shattered. Matt shook his head to get the stray thought out, he needed to focus if he was going to capture this Meowth and expand his team. Charmander successfully focused her attack but took a heavy blow from the Meowth. "Come on Charmander, you can handle this!" Matt wasn't entirely sure about how that would help Charmander much but the little lizard did seem to harden her resolve afterwards. Launching her own flurry of Scratch attacks she caused the Meowth to stagger back though she did get one more attack off before retreating. Matt quickly let fly with his Poké Ball and let out a whoop of excitement when the ball finally stopped shaking. He'd done it, he'd captured his first Pokemon. He ran over to Charmander and scooped her up in a big bear hug before stooping to collect the Poké Ball with Meowth in.

Matt could tell Charmander was slightly the worse for wear so headed straight for the big, red-roofed building he knew was the Pokémon Center. Wandering in through the sliding doors he was hit by a wave of activity. People here were doing all sorts of things! There was the Mart, the healing desk and a line of people waiting to use a bank of computers in the corner. Matt joined the queue for healing and after a short while ended up at the desk. He recalled Charmander and handed the balls over to a Chansey stood behind the counter. She rushed off with the balls and returned a short while later. Matt took the balls, said thanks and turned to leave.

He was heading towards the door when an interesting map on the wall caught his attention. Heading over he realised this was in fact a town map of the entire region. Glancing over it he quickly found Southstone. He was at the southern tip of the most northwestern of the islands and by the looks of it there was a large mountain to the north. Mountains meant snow, snow meant ice Pokémon and from what he could remember from his time spent learning about this stuff Charmander was pretty good against them. There was bound to be a gym as well and he might even meet new companions on the way. He would probably need to train his team up a bit as well if he was going to stand any chance against a gym leader.

Making his mind up he headed out of the Pokémon Center and began walking north towards the town border. Wanting his team to get to know him better he released Charmander and the freshly caught Meowth. Charmander let out an excited squeal and immediately grabbed the Meowth in a hug. The cat let out a hiss and Charmander jumped back. "Come on you two, you're on the same team now!" Meowth let out a defeated meow before resigning herself to Charmander's second hug. Matt let out a little smile before continuing walking out of the town. The two Pokémon got up and trotted along behind him. This was going well, so far, he hoped that his journey would continue in the same strain.

He glanced around at the Pokémon following him. Charmander let out a happy growl and chased after him to catch up. She began attempting to walk exactly like he was and Matt let out a little snigger. She glanced up at that and a sly grin crept across her face. Mischievous little creature. Meowth on the other hand wasn't that interested in Matt and what he was doing. She was looking around on the floor, sniffing every weed and pawing at every rock. Matt had no idea what she was hoping to find but hoped it would be something good!

As Matt stepped out of the town, finally leaving the few houses behind, he let out a loud sigh and shoved his hands into his pockets. Here he was, out on an adventure, two Pokémon at his side and ready to face the world ahead. It seemed a fairly long way to Shimo City but Matt was sure whatever was awaiting him would be good!

Congratulations on capturing your first Pokémon! The fuzzy little cat is going to serve you well! You made the smart move to make your way straight to the Pokémon Center, because your Charmander is still getting used to you. You needed to prove to her that she can trust you, and giving her the proper care was a great start!

It also looks like you are a trainer that likes to plan ahead, something that many people don’t consider a valuable quality. Charmander is indeed great against ice type Pokémon, and the route to the mountains were going to put you up against many different trainers and Pokémon. If I were you, I would have brought along a few more Pokéballs or something to heal your team, but that is purely up to you. I’m sure you will be fine.

You were right to let your two Pokémon try to get to know each other. Charmander only wanted more friends, but Meowth had been on her own for so long, she didn’t know what friends really were. While you walked through the Southern Path, she glanced up at you. She was unsure of you, but she knew that she should try to trust you. As you noticed, she was indeed looking for something, but she couldn’t quite find it yet. It would take a little longer, but she might eventually find something useful.

Although she stayed about ten feet away from you, looking around for some mysterious object, she did make sure to keep an eye on you and her new acquaintance. It was while she was searching that she noticed a light snoring. As the saying goes, curiosity killed the Meowth, but I don’t think this would exactly lead to your new friend’s demise. She scampered silently towards the source of the noise, trying to stay as quiet as possible. She soon came across an adorable sight. A sleeping Pancham, his limp little body leaning against a large boulder, hidden from the trail.

“Meeeeowth!” she cried, aiming to get your attention. You perked up, running over to the Meowth and seeing the little sleeping Pancham. Just then, a thunderous galloping echoed through the route. Meowth looked around, confused and scared, before looking up to you for guidance.

Before you knew it, two Ponyta were in front of you, stamping their hooves against the dirt and blowing air out of their noses. They were upset, probably because they thought that you were hurting their friend. They neighed defiantly, one of them trotting over to the Pancham and nuzzling him. They were not going to let you hurt their friend.

It was your choice, trainer. You could try to battle the Ponyta and then hope that the Pancham would come along with you, or you could just keep on trekking, hoping to find a Pancham that wasn’t guarded by two fiery horses.

Matt didn't even notice Meowth disappear off into the bushes. Probably not the best start on his first trip into the unknown. His mind was occupied with thoughts of what lay ahead and the challenges that faced him. A few new members to the team would be a great place to start as well as gaining the trust and experience of his current Pokemon. Glancing down at the happy little Charmander next to him made Matt even more determined to succeed. This is what he wanted, he knew that truly, winning his first battle had put him one step closer to reaching his dreams. This little lizard next to him seemed to have confidence in his abilities so why shouldn't he? His mind finally settled he finally turned to see if Meowth was still behind him.

He couldn't see the cat anywhere. He had noticed she was looking for something so maybe she had wandered off. Matt's heart took a sudden dip thinking that the cat had just abandoned him and gone back off into the wild. Starting to panic he ran a short way back along the trail to try and find any sight of her. "Meeeeeeeowth!" That was her. The sound had come from a short way off the trail and Matt crashed through the bushes towards the noise. He burst out upon the little cat and was relieved to see she wasn't hurt, and that she hadn't abandoned him as he thought. Matt felt instantly guilty that the thought had ever crossed his mind and scratched Meowth behind the ears as a sort of apology. Looking up he noticed the Pokémon snoring away blissfully beneath the tree.

He had never seen a Pokémon like this. Matt was aware that new Pokémon were discovered every so often and news of this discovery must not have reached him. He tapped his PokéTech and managed to find the information page on this Pokemon. Pancham. The Playful Pokemon. It does its best to be taken seriously by its enemies, but its glare is not sufficiently intimidating. Chewing on a leaf is its trademark. While it does its level best to glare and pull a scary face, it can't help grinning if anyone pats its head. Matt couldn't help grinning at the last bit of the entry. Scanning down he noticed that it was a Fighting type Pokémon and recalled that they were also good against Ice types. This new Pokémon could be a useful, and fun, addition to the team!

A loud galloping sound came crashing through the bushes and Meowth pulled in closer to his legs and looked up to him for guidance. Matt felt even more guilty at having thought the cat would abandon him. He clearly had a lot to learn. "Hey, don't be scared. I'm going to take care of you, and I know Charmander here will protect you as well. Though by the way you fought her you're clearly a strong little cat" Charmander beamed at Meowth and the cat seemed to relax a tiny bit. This didn't last as the two Ponyta burst into sight. Here was a Pokémon Matt recognised! He scooped Meowth up into his arms and held the cat close to try and calm her down and get her feeling safe from the two horses. Matt didn't really see the fascination some people had with these Pokemon, even if they would be useful to him he just didn't want one. The Pancham though he did want and if he had to go through these two horses then so be it. He just hoped that the panda wouldn't hold it against him if he attacked his friends.

"Alright guys let's take down these Ponyta! This will be a great chance to try you two working together. Charmander, the combo we used last time really seemed to work so let's do that again. [attack=Focus] on your attack and go for a [attack=scratch] on each of the Ponyta!" Charmander nodded in response and turned to face her opponents. Matt placed Meowth gently back on the ground and knelt next to her to give her orders. "Alright Meowth, I know you don't fully trust me yet but I've seen you fight and you did some serious damage to Charmander. I've seen how lethal your claws are so I want you to use them. Follow behind Charmander and quickly follow up her attacks with a [attack=scratch] of your own on each of them. I want you to then use another [attack=scratch] on either of them if they're still standing." Meowth gave a little nod and wiped her head against Matt's knees before going to join Charmander at her side.

Here goes nothing. Matt hoped he good get these Ponyta out of the way quickly before the Pancham woke up. He didn't much fancy a three on one fight at this level of his adventure. Perhaps he could even convince the panda to come with him, though with him fighting his friends Matt didn't think that too likely. Bringing his mind back to the battle Matt waited for his team to move....

[Battling the two Ponyta. Charmander using [attack=focus] on Attack then [attack=scratch] on each Ponyta. Meowth using [attack=scratch] on each Ponyta then another Scratch on one of them.]

[Meowth] – [Pick Up] – [progress=1.5,5] (1.5/5)

Trust is something that humans take very seriously. It can take years for someone to learn to trust another human, but seconds for it to be taken away and never returned. Imagine never being able to trust anyone, and then suddenly given the opportunity to trust someone that you barely know. The expectation for a recently caught Pokémon is usually that they must trust their new trainers without fault, but you are a smart trainer.

While worrying about Meowth was apparently unnecessary, you were right to still wonder. You care about your Pokémon, and that will be important for the future. Trainers are rarely ever good if their Pokémon don’t have any trust in them. The more a Pokémon trusts you, the more likely they are to follow your orders.

Meowth looked at you as you consoled her. She could sense the good in your heart, and that made her a very happy furball. She wanted to make you happy. While her instincts told her that she should run away, she knew that she could rely on you. By extension, that also meant that she would have to work with the fire lizard thing, but that’s besides the point.

Charmander heard your orders and immediately went into Focusing on her Attack. Then, as she had done before, she leapt at the male Ponyta and Scratched her hard on the snout. Whinnying in pain, the Ponyta staggered backwards before letting out a loud [attack=Growl]. Can we talk about that for a second? A horse is growling. In all honesty, it sounded a lot like a very angry whinny, but the effect worked. Charmander and Meowth’s Attack was lowered, but that didn’t push them out of the fight.

While Charmander took on the male Ponyta, your Meowth quickly dove in on the female and scratched her with long claws. Her Technician ability helped tremendously, doing considerable damage. She was a little slow on the follow up, however, giving the female an opening for a [attack=Tackle] attack on your Meowth. She was thrown back a couple of feet, but as cats always do, she landed on her paws.

The next thing that happened was oddly synchronized. Both Charmander and Meowth ran at the Ponyta, each landing a [attack=Scratch] attack on their respective opponents. “Meeeeowth!” sang your Meowth triumphantly as the female Ponyta was knocked unconscious. She was about to follow through with her third Scratch attack when the male, though tired, landed a well timed tackle against your Charmander. She was pushed back with the force of the attack, but this gave your Meowth the opening she needed to perform her third, final Scratch on the Ponyta, knocking him unconscious.

Both Meowth and Charmander let out triumphant cheers as they defeated the two horses, hugging happily before Meowth realized who she was hugging. She pulled away from the hug and scurried away from your Charmander, failing to appear nonchalant as she cleaned her paw.

While the battle came to a close, you noticed that the Pancham was starting to stir. He opened his eyes groggily, blinking out the sleep and yawning loudly. “Panch?” he said, tilting his head to the side while looking at you. He then looked at his two friends and began to piece together what happened. “Panch! PANCH PANCH PANCH!” he yelled angrily, trying to wake his two friends up. He knew that they weren’t dead, but he also realized that you were the reason that they were injured. He looked at the cat, fuming as she cleaned herself with what he imagined to be indignation. How could she be cleaning herself, not caring that another Pokémon was injured.

You have a couple of options, trainer. You could have your Pokémon attack the Pancham, or you could try to console him. He was hurt that someone would attack his friends, and he was ready to fight you because you hurt them. What do you do?

Well that went a lot better than Matt was expecting! He didn't know whether it was the Pokémon he had, their teamwork together or his seemingly amazing battle skills. But perhaps he was getting ahead of himself. He had only just started out on this journey and getting over confident would just result in him abandoning his goals. It had happened with his other dreams. He had built his hopes up on the confidence that he was going to be the best of the best in an area only to find himself losing everything when one of his brothers had got their first. This wasn't going to happen here. It did seem he was doing alright but he knew that there would be a point where he would fall flat on his face, he just hoped he was strong enough to carry on when he did. If not for himself then for the two Pokémon he had just started to build bonds with and any future members, like this Pancham.

Matt couldn't help but smile a little when he saw his Pokémon hug, even if Meowth acted above the whole situation afterwards. Charmander seemed to be on Matt's wavelength a lot more than Meowth did. Having spent most of her life around trainers might explain it as Meowth had been living on the streets. There might be a bit more work required to build the cat's confidence in him and this might be the opportunity. Both his Pokémon had taken some damage from the Ponyta but he felt that Meowth could manage. If the worst happened he had some Potions in his bag that Professor Gatsby had given him. Both Charmander and Meowth had grown stronger fighting the Ponytas so that would always help.

Pancham's cry tore through Matt a little. He hadn't thought about what the panda might feel about Matt taking out his friends. He still wanted to see how the Pancham fought and with him so riled up Matt had a feeling that he would fight well. "I'm really sorry fella'." Matt tried to hide his disdain for Ponyta as he talked to the Pancham "You look like a great fighter and I wanted to recruit you to join me on my journey to battle my way to the top of this region. I'm sorry that your friends were here but they fought well. I can offer you food and shelter, though perhaps not always, and new friends and perhaps overtime we can help each other to get stronger! I'd love to see how you fight first if you'd let me."

Matt hoped the Pancham would take him up on his offer so he began addressing his team. "Well done guys! That was a great battle and you worked really well together. Let's hope that continues. Charmander I want you to take a back seat with this one I want to work more with Meowth." Charmander looked slightly disappointed but came and plopped herself between Matt's feet to watch the proceedings. "Alright Meowth let's do this. Hopefully this Pancham will take us up on this fight. If he does I want you to start with a [attack=Growl] to lower his attack slightly. Then get in there with a [attack=Bite]. Let's see what he's got." Meowth nodded silently at the instructions, still casually glancing around for dropped items, and faced down the opposing Pokemon. Well let's see what would happen...

In My Little White Room Again
Route One: Southern Path
Late Morning ; Sunny and Clear Skies
(Meowth) [ability=Pick Up] [progress=2,5] (2/5)

The Pancham frowned and folded his little arms across his chest. He listened as you apologized for having hurt his two friends, but it didn't seem to do much to soothe his anger. The little bear looked over his shoulder at the two collapsed Ponyta behind him. He made a little grunting noise to himself as he thought over how hard they had fought to try and protect him while he was asleep. Part of him knew that it was his fault that they had gotten hurt; had he been awake, the wouldn't have recklessly thrown themselves at you to protect him. The only thing he could he could think of to do now was to fight and protect them, for he wasn't sure if you were intending to capture them. However, that was when you mentioned that you wanted him to join your team. Though he still appeared to be rather grumpy, he didn't deny your invitation outright...so maybe he was considering your offer? Either way, there was going to be a battle before any decision was made.

Your Meowth initiated the battle by dropping down onto the ground so that she was on all four paws. She stretched out her her body, her tail flicking around behind her, and let out a tiny [attack=Growl] in the direction of the opposing Pancham. The little bear, with his arms still folded across his chest and a frown on his face, tilted his head to the side as he listened to your Meowth growl at him. Though his attack was still slightly dropped from the effect of the attack, he didn't appear to be phased whatsoever by your Meowth. He twirled the stem to the little leaf in mouth as he looked up at you behind your Pokemon. His eyes dropped to the ground as he thought over his options. With a determined look on his face, the Pancham nodded to himself. If it was a battle you wanted, then it would be a battle you would get. As the Pancham looked up to face his opponent, he noticed that she was already dashing towards him. The little bear grunted and then proceeded to charge forwards in the direction of the oncoming Meowth.

The Pancham tucked down his head seconds before the collision to protect himself. He slammed himself into your Meowth with a [attack=Tackle] attack, dealing some decent damage and managing to throw your Meowth off course. Meowth shook her head and looked up, only to see that the Pancham was standing over her. She let out a little hiss, trying to sound intimidating, as she pushed herself off the ground and embedded her teeth into the Pancham's leg with a [attack=Bite] attack. Luckily, because of her [ability=Technician] ability, her attack received a slight buff in its power. However, being a fighting type, Pancham naturally resisted attacks like [attack=Bite]. With her teeth still in the leg of the Pancham, Meowth looked up, only to see that the Pancham was staring back down at her. He didn't seem to be threatened by Meowth at all, even with her teeth in him. Meowth was slightly bothered by the fact that the Pancham was glaring down at her. She released his leg and slowly backed away from him, ready to return to your side. However, the Pancham had other plans. Before Meowth could retreat, he hurled himself into her with another [attack=Tackle] attack!

Meowth tumbled backwards from the attack. This time however, she quickly pushed herself up off of the ground and ran back to your side without giving the Pancham a second glance -not until she was safely hidden between your legs, that is. The Pancham meanwhile tilted his head towards the left and then the right, cracking his neck. He twirled the leaf stem around in his mouth some more as he looked you and your Meowth over once more. The little bear then lifted his front paws up and began pounding a closed fist into his open palm. However, that was when you notice that he cracked a smile. It appeared as if he was less angry now with the fact that you had hurt his friends; he seemed to be enjoying the battle that was at hand.

This Pancham was definitely a solid fellow. He had awoken to find his friends unconscious and a strange human talking at him but was still managing to hold his own in the battle. The way he had just taken Meowth's attack as if it was nothing and then returned with his own that had sent his cat running back to put her tail between Matt's legs. He now had both Charmander and Meowth sat there and Meowth didn't look too happy about going back into battle with the panda. The cocky Pokémon was smacking his fist into his palm and Matt thought he detected the slightest grin. Perhaps this was going just fine.

From between his legs came a little cry and Matt looked down to see Charmander jumping backwards away from the cat. Even as she did the grin appeared on her face again and she double over laughing at Meowth. Well it seemed that Charmander thought Meowth running away was a source of amusement and Meowth hadn't agreed. The cat was glowering at Charmander but her laughter had relit the battle spark and she proudly stepped forward to face-down Pancham. A low rumble was coming from Meowth and her tail stood fully erect as she crouched low to the ground ready to fight.

"Hahaha, don't take Charmader too seriously Meowth. That Pancham really seems to know how to fight." Meowth was still bristling but Matt hoped his Pokémon would still get along. "And you." He said turning to Charmander. "She's doing her best. Do you want to get in there?" Charmander immediately stopped laughing, though her cheeky smile persisted, before heading off into the bush. Matt didn't know where she was going but he hadn't spotted anything untoward around. Matt turned his mind back to the battle and thought about the previous round. Seems that Bite wasn't too effective against Pancham so maybe he should just stick to his original strategy. Hopefully that would turn out better.

Before giving Meowth her orders he addressed the Pancham again.

"You're an amazing fighter. Looks like you are really enjoying this. It would be great if you decided that you wanted to join me on my journey, I think you'd be quite the asset. If you don't mind I'd like to capture you when the battle's done, whether you win or not. I'm sorry again about your friends. They should recover in a couple of hours and be absolutely fine and continue the rest of their lives. Where I'm going I hope to battle strong Pokémon and make me and those with me even stronger! I think you'll find that an extremely lucrative opportunity."

Matt dug into his rucksack and withdrew another Poké Ball. Hopefully Meowth would be able to do some more damage this turn, and if Pancham assented, he would capture the panda Pokemon. First things first though, Meowth's orders. "Right Meowth, Bite doesn't seem to be too effective so let's just keep to Scratch. First though I want you to [attack=Focus] on your attack. You saw Charmander do it earlier so you'll be fine. Then I want you to hit the Pancham with a [attack=Scratch]. He seems very powerful but I don't want you to shirk from his attacks. This is all part of battling and you're going to take hits every know and then. I want you to trust me that I will take care of you and heal you when you're hurt. Let's do this!"

Meowth readied herself to attack and Matt hoped the cat would grow to trust him completely.

A rustle in the bushes brought Matt's head around and Charmander emerged. He was surprised to see her carrying an egg in her arms. Where she had found it he didn't know but he relieved her of it and placed it into his rucksack. Maybe it would hatch into a Pokémon he wanted, as of now he had no idea what it was. Matt patted Charmander and gave her a scratch under the chin. As a reward he handed her a handful of Pokémon treats and returned to watch the battle....

As you spoke to the Pancham, he turned and looked at his friends behind him. He seemed like he wanted to believe you that you didn't intend to harm them and that they would wake up just fine. And then he heard the part about your intentions of becoming stronger and making those with you also stronger. When you mentioned this, the little panda-looking Pokémon turned back towards you and looked down at his fist as though he was in deep though. The look on his face made it seem like he was blaming himself for his friends getting hurt and maybe if he was stronger, this whole thing could have been avoided. Looking back at you, he gave a nod, signifying that he would gladly join you in hopes of becoming as strong as he could be to protect the ones that he cares about. But of course, that would be after this battle was over.

Pancham started this round of the battle off by giving a very daunting glare at your Meowth in an attempt to have her lower her guard. The [attack=Leer] seemed to have work and Meowth seemed like she was just a little bit more susceptible to taking damage. However, Meowth thought back to when Charmander had used [attack=Focus] in a previous battle and copycatted what the lizard had done. The hairs on her back started to stand on edge and after a few seconds, she seemed like she was going to be dealing out a bit more damage that what she previously was doing. Seeing the opportunity though, Pancham ran right up and landed a somewhat hard-hitting [attack=Tackle] on your little kitty. The hit sent Meowth back a little bit but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. She was still holding on strong and was determined to win this fight.

Charging at the Pancham, she readied her claws and swiped at the small panda with some rather sharp claws in a [attack=Scratch] attack. Thanks to the boost of [ability=Technician] and through the wonderful benefits of Same-Type-Attack-Bonus, the attack knocked Pancham to the ground, leaving him down of the count and Meowth the victor of this battle. Congratulation! Meowth seemed to look a little stronger from the battle as well! Everything was going pretty good for you for having just started your Journey just hours prior. Pancham did seem like he was willing to join your team so that he could become stronger though. And now that the battle was done, now would be the perfect time to catch him. Might want to consider running back to town as well so that Meowth and Pancham can get healed up from the battle and be back in fighting spirits. Of course, that would be if you even took the Pancham with you, but I'm sure you will.

Matt smiled when the Pancham nodded his assent to coming with him. This journey just kept getting better and better, why hadn't he done this the first time? Maybe if he'd set off all those years ago he could have been champion somewhere by now. Matt shook his head at that thought, tried to dislodge it from his mind. If he hadn't been knocked down those last attempts then he wouldn't have ended up here with his new Pokemon. Having had an amazing experience so far with his team, that seemed to be forming nicely, he knew this was the right place and the right time to be fighting for his dreams. Someday he would take down his brother! That day was closer since he had arrived in Southstone, Professor Gatsby had seen to that by giving him Charmander. Meowth had been a lucky find and he hoped Pancham would be an equally formidable addition to the team.

Turning his attention back to the battle, Matt noticed that Meowth had picked something up from fighting with Charmander. The little lizard gave a snuffle as Meowth used the tactic Matt had first directed Charmander to use. It seemed a fairly effective move set, Focusing then attacking, he wasn't so sure how good it would be later on when the opposing Pokémon were a lot stronger. Let alone when he faced down an actual trainer, something that he had yet to attempt. Maybe that was the next move as his team had gotten bigger.

Meowth took the attack from the Pancham but returned it twice over and the panda ended up sprawled unconscious on the floor. Matt cracked another grin and tossed another Poké Ball towards him. Matt didn't know much about how these balls worked but he assumed that a knocked out Pokémon wouldn't put up too much of a fight. While Matt waited for the Pokémon to be captured, or not, he called to Meowth.

"Hey, that was a great battle. I know it can't have been easy after those Ponyta but you did really well!" Matt scratched Meowth between the ears and the little kitty gave a loud purr of satisfaction. "Let's give you a rest in your Poké Ball for a bit, you too Charmander. I think I need to run back into town and get you healed, possibly grab a few supplies as well just in case. It's a long trip to where we're going!" Matt attempted to recall both Meowth and Charmander but the cat dodged out of the way of the light at the last second. She glared up at Matt before beginning to rummage around in the grass, looking for stray items again Matt assumed.

If Pancham was captured he would make his way back into Southstone and to the Pokémon Center. Get his team healed and stock up on potions and ethers, it was a long way to Shimo City where his next challenge awaited. The gym. Matt recalled that fighting types also got an advantage against ice types so hopefully the Pancham would help in beating the gym. Only time would tell. Once out of the Pokémon Center he would return to this route and start the long trek to Shimo City, keeping his eye out for any potential trainers along the way to help him train.

With a plan formed up in his mind, Matt returned to watching the Poké Ball to check if Pancham was caught. Even if it wasn't Matt would continue to throw Poké Balls at him until he stayed in a ball......

As I didn't capture the Pancham in the last post I'm doing it in this one. If captured want to head back into Southstone and heal my team. Also want to buy two Potions and two Ethers ($200) before heading back out onto Southern Route towards Shimo City.
