Capturing Pokémon

Developed and modernized by Silph Co. and the Devon Corporation, Pokéballs nowadays are mass produced around the world and come in many different types of variations. What is a Pokéball however? A Pokéball is a type of spherical, mechanical device that was believed to originated from early developments out of the Johto region by using apricot trees. These Pokéballs have been used for generation to capture wild Pokémon, thus strengthening the bond between Pokémon and humankind. In order to catch a Pokémon, however, one must keep in mind the Capture Rates that go along with each individual type of Pokéball. But what is a Capture Rate? A Capture Rate is essentially the chance at which a Pokémon can be captured through the uses of percentages set by a number of factors: the Pokéballs base capture rate, types of Pokéballs used, the health and energy of the opposing Pokémon, status ailments, and finally the rarity of the opposing Pokémon. Each of these factors will be covered in further detail below.
  • Part I: [goto=part1,Types of Pokeballs]
  • Part II: [goto=part2,Health & Energy]
  • Part III: [goto=part3,Status Ailments]

  • Part V: [goto=part5,Example of Using Capture Rates]

Part I: Types of Pokeballs
Throughout the decades, numerous of different types of Pokéballs have been created besides the original trio of the Pokéball, Greatball, and Ultraball. These different types of Pokéballs have special and unique properties that make them beneficial in the capture of some specific types of Pokémon. The table below will show each individual Pokéball that is available on Alternia and the properties that benefit the Capture Rate for each one.

Part II: Health & Energy
One of the most deciding factors on your chances of capturing a Pokémon is how depleted its Health and/or Energy is. The more effort and time you take into battling your desired Pokémon and slowly whittling down its Health and Energy will cause it to be less likely to put up a strong resistance when you attempt to capture it. Keep in mind that once a Pokémons Heath or Energy reaches 0%, it will faint. A fainted Pokémon, though it will be easier to capture, will not ensure a 100% Capture Rate.

Health Left Capture Rate
90-99% Increases Capture Rate by 10%
80-89% Increases Capture Rate by 20%
70-79% Increases Capture Rate by 30%
61-69% Increases Capture Rate by 40%
50-59% Increases Capture Rate by 50%
40-49% Increases Capture Rate by 60%
30-39% Increases Capture Rate by 70%
20-29% Increases Capture Rate by 80%
10-19% Increases Capture Rate by 90%
1-9% Increases Capture Rate by 95%
0% Increases Capture Rate by 99%

The increase in Capture Rate for Energy costs however are different from that of determining the Capture Rate through the means of depleted Health. When determining this rate through the means of how much Energy is consumed, the Capture Rate can be determined through multiplying the amount of energy spent times 50%.

Energy Spent (as a % of total Energy) x 50% = Increase to Capture Rate

Part III: Status Conditions
Status conditions can easily hinder a Pokémons ability to perform as battle, thus typically making them easier to capture. Some status ailments however are more beneficial than others. When trying to strengthen the chances of capturing a Pokémon, be sure to know which status effects will work more towards your advantage. Also be sure to keep in mind the Status Ailments thread for reminders of the difference between the Major and Minor Status Ailments, as well as any questions in regards towards each specific status effect.

Status Ailment Capture Rate
Burn Increases Capture Rate by 10%
Fainted Increases Capture Rate by 99%
Frozen Increases Capture Rate by 40%
Paralysis Increases Capture Rate by 25 %
Poison Increases Capture Rate by 15%
Sleep Increases Capture Rate by 30%
Confusion Increases Capture Rate by 20%
Attraction Increases Capture Rate by 25%

Part IV: Pokémon Rarity
The rarity of a Pokémon you are trying to capture will also have an effect on the Capture Rate. Typically, Pokémon that are considered to be generally rarer are more difficult to capture than those who are more common. Although capturing certain Pokémon will be harder, keep in mind that local rarities will differ for some Pokémon - so plan ahead before you go hunting for a particular Pokémon, especially if you can find it in a location where it is more common.

Pokémon Rarity Capture Rate
Common Reduces Capture Rate by 10%
Uncommon Reduces Capture Rate by 15%
Rare Reduces Capture Rate by 20%
Gold Rare Reduces Capture Rate by 30%
Legendary Reduces Capture Rate by 50%

Part V: Example of Using Capture Rates
Let's say that in your Journey you've stumbled across a Level 17 Jigglypuff, which is generally an Uncommon Pokémon. The two of you have fought for a while against each other. At this very moment in time, the opposing Jigglypuff is not only Paralyzed but she also is at :hp 20/59 and :eng 50/81. You decide that now is as of good a time as any to go ahead and use the last of your standard Pokéballs against her. Below is how you can gauge the chances at which your attempted capture will be successful!

+70% Capture Rate Due to Health Loss
+19.1% Capture Rate Due to Energy Loss
+25% Capture Rate Due to Being Paralyzed
+10% Capture Rate Due to Standard Pokéball
-15% Capture Rate Due to Jigglypuff being Uncommon
