Gaining EXP and Levels
In the Pokémon games, some Pokémon require more experience (commonly abbreviated to on Alternia) to level than others. However, Alternia uses a much simpler and standardised system for gaining experience and levels. For all Pokémon on Alternia, the experience necessary to gain one level is equal to the level of your Pokémon. For instance, a Level 10 Pokémon requires 10 experience to grow to Level 11.
Here are the things you should know about the experience system:
- Part I: [goto=part1,General Information]
- Part II: [goto=part2,Single Battles]
- Part III: [goto=part3,Multi-Battles]
- Part IV: [goto=part4,Level 10+ Pokemon]
- Part V: [goto=part5,Experience Bonuses & Penalties]
- Part VI: [goto=part6,Special Case: No Fainted Pokémon]
[anchor=part1] Part I: General Information- All experience is rounded to 1 decimal place.
- The minimum amount of experience that can be acquired in a situation where experience is to be gained is 0.1.
- All experience is gained at the end of a battle (either when one side of the battle faints or one side flees/is captured).
- If a Pokémon gains a level after a battle, any experience not used to reach that level counts towards reaching the next level.
For instance, a Level 5 Treecko has gained 6 following a battle, and subsequently grows to Level 6 (as a Level 5 Pokémon requires 5 to grow to Level 6). The 1 remaining is carried over, meaning the Treecko only requires a further 5 to grow to Level 7.
[anchor=part2] Part II: Single Battles- The basic formula for calculating experience for a victory is 10(x/y), where x is equal to the level of your opponents Pokémon, and y is equal to the level of your own Pokémon.
- Similarly, the basic formula for calculating experience for a defeat is 5(x/y).
For example, a Level 5 Starly beats a Level 4 Bidoof in battle. The Starly would gain: 10(4/5) = 8 , whilst the Bidoof would gain: 5(5/4) = 6.3 (rounded up from 6.25).
[anchor=part3] Part III: Multi-Battles - The basic formula for calculating experience for a victory is 10(x/y)/z, where x is equal to the total level of your opponents Pokémon, y is equal to the total levels of your own Pokémon and z is the number of Pokémon on your side of the battle.
- The basic formula for calculating experience for a defeat is 5(x/y)/z.
- Experience is calculated when a Pokémon faints, but is not given out until the end of the battle.
For example, a Level 5 Timburr and a Level 4 Geodude have defeated a Level 3 Wurmple, a Level 4 Caterpie and a Level 5 Weedle. Neither Timburr or Geodude fainted:
[table-class=fixed-table-layout]| Experience |
|---|
| Pokémon \\ Order of Defeat | Wurmple faints | Caterpie faints | Weedle faints | Total gained post-battle |
|---|
| Timburr (Level 5) | 10(3/5)/2 = 3 | 10(4/5)/2 = 4 | 10(5/5)/2 = 5 | 12 | | Geodude (Level 4) | 10(3/4)/2 = 3.8 (rounded up from 3.75) | 10(4/4)/2 = 5 | 10(5/4)/2 = 6.3 (rounded up from 6.25) | 15.1 | | ------ | | | | | | Wurmple (Level 3) | 5((5+4)/3)/3 = 5 | 0 | 0 | 5 | | Caterpie (Level 4) | 0 | 5((5+4)/4)/3 = 3.8 (rounded up from 3.75) | 0 | 3.8 | | Weedle (Level 5) | 0 | 0 | 5((5+4)/5)/3 = 3 | 3 |
If, however, the Timburr in the example above fainted after the Caterpie had fainted:
[table-class=fixed-table-layout]| Experience |
|---|
| Pokémon \\ Order of Defeat | Wurmple faints | Caterpie faints | Timburr faints | Weedle faints | Total gained post-battle |
|---|
| Timburr (Level 5) | 10(3/5)/2 = 3 | 10(4/5)/2 = 4 | 5(5/5)/2 = 2.5 | 0 | 9.5 | | Geodude (Level 4) | 10(3/4)/2 = 3.8 (rounded up from 3.75) | 10(4/4)/2 = 5 | 0 | 10(5/4)/2 = 6.3 (rounded up from 6.25) | 15.1 | | ------ | | | | | | | Wurmple (Level 3) | 5((5+4)/3)/3 = 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | | Caterpie (Level 4) | 0 | 5((5+4)/4)/3 = 3.8 (rounded up from 3.75) | 0 | 0 | 3.8 | | Weedle (Level 5) | 0 | 0 | 10(5/5)/3 = 3.3 (rounded down from 3.33 recurring) | 5(4/5)/3 = 1.3 (rounded down from 1.33 recurring) | 4.6 |
[anchor=part4] Part IV: Level 10+ Pokémon
- For Pokémon higher than level 10, the basic formula for experience gained for victory changes from 10(x/y) to Lv(x/y), where Lv is equal to the Level of the Pokémon.
- Subsequently, the formula for experience gained in defeat becomes 1/2Lv(x/y).
- All changes that apply for multi-battles still apply.
For example, a Level 18 Marshtomp defeats a Level 15 Charmander. The Marshtomp would gain: 18(15/18) = 15 , whilst the Charmander would gain (15/2)*(18/15) = 9 .
[anchor=part5] Part V: Experience Bonuses/Penalties
- Losing experience is reduced to 25% of the total if there is a difference of 10 to 19 levels between the loser and the winner. Losing experience is cut to 5% of the total amount if the level difference is 20 or more.
- When you are involved in a Trainer vs. Trainer battle, the total experience is multipled by 1.3.
- Members roleplaying as Pokémon as opposed to trainers receive twice the normal experience for any given battle.
- Gyms give out bonus experience based on the average levels of all Pokémon involved in the battle.
- Your own Pokémon battling against each other does not give experience to either Pokemon. It is seen as training instead of a real fight. This is a precaution against "grinding" for levels and cheating the system.
[anchor=part6] Part VI: Special Case: No Fainted Pokémon
- In the event that a battle ends without a Pokémon fainting on either side (as a result of fleeing or a Pokémon being captured), the amount of experience given out depends on the amount of HP of each side.
- If both Pokémon have over 50% HP remaining at the end of the battle, no experience is earned.
- If both Pokémon have under 50% HP remaining, both Pokémon gain half the normal experience they would gain for remaining conscious.
- If one Pokémon has over 50% HP remaining, whilst the other Pokémon has under 50% HP remaining, the first Pokémon would gain half the normal experience, but the second Pokémon would gain no experience.
For example, a trainer with a Level 5 Chimchar has just caught a Level 4 Pidove.
[table-class=fixed-table-layout]| Experience |
|---|
| Pokémon \\ Scenario | Both Chimchar and Pidove have over 50% HP left | Both Chimchar and Pidove have under 50% HP left | Chimchar has over 50% HP left Pidove has under 50% HP left |
|---|
| Chimchar (Level 5) | 0 (opponent has over 50% HP) | 10(4/5)/2 = 4 | 10(4/5)/2 = 4 | | Pidove (Level 4) | 0 (opponent has over 50% HP) | 10(5/4)/2 = 6.3 (rounded from 6.25) | 0 (opponent has over 50% HP) |
