Alternia's Old Man
|
Journey | Computer Name: Abigail Jennifer "AJ" Madison Gender: Female Age: 19 Profession: None Appearance: On a base level, AJ looks like a rather typical girl.... if she were about 5 years younger. Not only does her diminuative size make her look more like a highschool freshman than the legally considered adult she is, but she has a very young face as well. Her big brown eyes have the innocence of a child, partially due to her genetics just leaving her actually looking that way, and partially because she had such a strange childhood and never really learned how to co-exist with normal society, so she really IS that innocent. Her dark brown hair is straight and (when she has a chance to wash it) silky smooth, reaching down to just below her shoulders. To call her small would be an understatement. Even other girl's AJ's age are at least a good head taller than her. Combine this with her thin, wirey frame, and she casts a shadow that's anything but intimidating. While often mistaken for anorexic because she's so thin, she'll gladly take that accusation anyday, to avoid having to tell the true reason. The one part of her that has any real musculature at all is her legs. That happens when you're constantly having to run from local bullies and shopkeepers who've caught you lifting a few scraps so that you can eat... not to mention her naturally nomadic lifestyle constantly keeping her on the move. If this child-like face and small stature weren't enough to make AJ look defenseless and weak, the way she carries herself would definitely doom her. After years of being victimized and trying to shelter herself from the elements under anything she could find - much of which wasn't very big, her back has an almost natural slouch to it. She often walks around with her hands in the big kangaroo pocket of her favorite hoodie, head hung low so either her hair, the hood, or both can keep her face hidden. Unless you were actively looking for the tiniest, frailest looking girl in the room, you might not even notice her half of the time. Speaking of the hoodie, even before her journey began, AJ's wardrobe was far from varied and complicated. She makes a habit of keeping a minimum of 2 changes of clothes on her - the essencial stuff at least. While she can rarely afford (or pack) much more, this is enough to get her by most of the time and when one starts to get too dirty, she simply washes one, then changes into the other while she repeats the process. Naturally, this wears through clothes more quickly than most people would, so she's always having to replace it, but she usually makes sure to have a warm and cold weather set - a t-shirt or tank top and a pair of shorts, and a pair of jeans or thick sweats and a sweater, or something comparable. She's also most often seen wearing her favorite hoodie - black, with a feminine style animated skull on the front - almost like how one would image goth wear designed by the people behind Hello Kitty. This, at it's core, is her style - just a little bit punk-ish and anti-establishment, but as seen through a world filled with pink glitter and cartoon characters. Height: ? Weight: ? lbs. Trainer Biography: AJ comes from the region of the mainland that borders on the waters where the islands of Alternia lie. That, however, is about as close as she has come in a long time to having a place to call home. When AJ was just a little girl, her mother past away. This forced her father into such a deep depression that he lost his job and while he continues to find odd jobs to do here and there, life for their little family never really recovered. As such, "home" was their car - which became like a house to the two of them in more ways that one, as they could very rarely afford gas to actually move it. The only nights she didn't spend in the car with her father, AJ embraced her first love - the great outdoors, and would sleep under the stars in her trusty sleeping bad she'd had for as long as she could remember. When it wasn't the elements that forced her out of the outdoors she loved so much, it was a local "gang" (at least they called themselves that, but really it was a bunch of kids on bicycles who wanted to be tough) calling themselves the Poochyena pack - after a pokemon the leader had. They would torment local kids, steal their belongings, push them around and just in general treat them like shit while riding around on their expensive bikes their parents had bough them. AJ became one of their favorite targets, despite not having anything worth stealing, because she was easy to get to. After all, a homeless kid doesn't exactly have a lot of support to back her up. She didn't mind it too much though, in the long run. She was a lot stronger than they knew. Her second love came not long after: Pokemon. It was a sad reality that she had resigned herself to a long time ago that she'd never be able to actually become a pokemon trainer. Hell, she could save every penny that ever touched her palm and MAYBE in 6 months to a year she could afford a single pokeball... but sooner or later, a girl has to eat. Instead, she would play with and feed the few scraps of food she found not fit for human consumption to the local wild ones, and simply entertained the dream that one day she would overcome this limitation - watching in envy as children battled their starting pokemon in the schoolyards, and watching the TVs in electronic stores whenever they'd show the big battles that were held in the nearby stadium - including a yearly tournament that was held in her home town, for a huge cash prize. That tournament became her obsession. She would think about it all year - even going so far as to "borrow" (it's not stealing if you bring it back, right?) pokemon magazines from news stands to follow the activities of trainers who were likely to compete. She would then bounce from store to store, tuning in the TVs that weren't already showing the battles and loitering as long as she could before getting kicked out and moving on to the next. It was her ultimate fantasy to one day compete in, and win it herself.... but that could never happen to a street rat like her. She would have to be content watching it on these TVs. Or would she? A few months before leaving home, her father surprised her with the greatest gift she ever imagined possible. He had done some painting for one of the men who worked at the stadium, and had been given a pair of tickets as a gift. He had thought about selling them, but the seats were in the very back - so far up that the pokemon almost looked like two flies zipping around and bumping into eachother. These kinds of seats were a hard sell at the last minute, and were worth more than their weight in gold to his little girl... so, AJ and her father sat there and watched the battles - seeing more on the jumbo tron above the battlefield than of the live action itself, but still she was awe-struck. This was a dream come true... she was in the same building as the best of the best, what did she care if she didn't have the best view? Her father saw the excitement and thrill on her face and he did the one thing AJ could never forget. He cried. It wasn't an all-out sob, but as she looked up at him beaming with excitement, she saw a single tear roll down his cheek, as he told her how sorry he was. Sorry he couldn't get better seats, sorry he couldn't afford to outfit her for her own pokemon journey... sorry for the life she had lead, and the fact that he was the cause of it. This broke her heart, and to this day this conversation still haunts her memories. She'd tried to tell him it wasn't his fault and that she didn't blame him, but he wouldn't listen. It was only a few weeks later that her father suffered a heart attack and died. It wasn't clear whether the stress of all that guilt he'd carried around with him since that day had contributed, but AJ was never able to forgive herself. She felt selfish for being the reason he didn't sell the tickets, even if for a loss. She felt responsible for his self loathing, and she felt like a bad daughter for caring so much more about being there to see her dreams playing out before her, that she didn't immediately notice how much her father was hurting. Immediately, she began to pack. She couldn't stay in the car anymore - not without him. There were too many memories there, and she certainly couldn't move it as she had no way of making money, let alone getting a drivers license. She got lucky as she was walking down the waterfront away from where the car stood, looking for a new place to settle down for a night - backpack with sleeping bag in tow. She found a couple members of the Poochyena Pack swinning in the ocean.... and they'd left their bikes unattended. Surely, one could be forgiven for stealing a luxury from those who didn't deserve it, if them losing something they WANTED gave someone else something they NEEDED, right? So she hopped on one of the bikes while they weren't looking and peddled as fast as her little legs could carry her to the nearest second hand store and sold it for what she could get. It wasn't a lot, certainly not compared to what the other kid's parents must have paid for it... but it was enough to buy a couple pokeballs, a week or so worth of canned food (canned so it wouldn't go bad in her backpack) and a ticket on a ferry to Peddleton (chosen not cause it was of any interest to her but because, as the primary sea port for Alternia, it was the cheapest ticket on the board). It was nothing too glitzy or exciting, but it was somewhere new - away from her bad memories, away from the Pack, and a step closer to something she could make her own. "Some day," she told herself "I'll come back.... when I'm ready to win that tournament." The last thing she did before she boarded the boat came when she heard another spoiled rich kid complaining to a small pokemon. Apparently, it wasn't strong enough for the kid. He was calling it "wimpy", "pathetic", and going on and on about how his other pokemon were stronger. The poor little bug reminded AJ a lot of herself. A small, unimposing little creature being bullied around by somebody bigger and more powerful than her. She felt sorry for it, and saw a chance to improve things a bit for the both of them.... so she approached the boy and offered him $50 for the pokeball that held the little creature. It was a measly sum, but she appealed to the boy's anger, saying that if the little Caterpie was really as weak as he said, it was no big loss and he'd probably end up releasing it anyway - he might as well get something out of it. All it took was a little batting of her big cute eyelashes and the kid agreed. Mere minutes later, AJ was boarding the boat for Alternia with nothing but a little loose cash in her pocket, a couple empty pokeballs, a backpack full of what she would need to camp out for a few days, and a frightened, abused little caterpillar pokemon. She smiled, though, knowing that in the end these two poor little things were going to be okay.... together.
