Silken Armor

Basic Information:

Name: Silken Armor
Item Sprite: Not yet available.
Optional Image:
The exact appearance varies depending on the pokemon it's made for. If it's made for a humanshape pokemon it looks a lot like a white mage outfit, minus the red trim. In general it's a loosely fitting half-inch thick piece of spider silk.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Item Information:

Weight: 'The height in inches divided by four.' pounds

Height: The height of the pokemon it's made for.

Effects: [Held Item/Clothing] Gives the user "Battle Armor" ability. If the user only has one ability; it now has two. If the user has two it replaces one of it's existing abilities. If one of the user's abilities involves contact, such as rough skin, it is given priority; otherwise the removed ability is random.

Description: Durable enough to not be torn and light enough to not hinder movement; but not thick enough to do much to absorb impacts. All the light silken armor stands to do is differ critical hits. The armor is bullet proof and woven to be very difficult to cut, though can be destroyed if an enemy is diligent enough to do so. It absorbs no damage, but spreads it out. If a pokemon wearing this was shot with a gun, it wouldn't pierce the armor, but the pokemon would have a very nasty bruise from the impact.

Process: Pokemon that is being fitted to the armor (or one of the same species) must be present to create the armor. Requires one ball of high quality silk per 4 inches of height [cannot be made with low quality silk]. Requiring only one ball for Joltik all the way to 149 balls for a Celetrayn. Spinarak and Joltik may be trained to make them for small pokemon (up to 7 feet); while Ariados and Galvantula can be trained to make them for larger ones (5 feet and up). Requires 1 post per ball needed (Spinarak/Joltik) or 3 balls needed (Ariados/Galvantula); requires at least two pokemon to make; if 4 pokemon are used time needed is halved; any more than 4 cannot be used except on pokemon ever 15 feet tall, which cap at 8. The pokemon first scour quickly around the subjects body (if the pokemon has a contact ability is must be disabled before hand, by gastro acid or skill swap), after gathering measurements, they use their front pairs of legs and some fresh thread to weave in between the two, forming to the pokemon's shape as they go. It is difficult for a human to directly understand the weaving without implements as we are incapable of doing it ourselves and attempts to make these via human hands or machine do not turn out woven as tightly as the pokemon themselves can manage, and are therefore more likely to tear.

Price: The general price of a set of this armor is $250 + $75 for every ball of HQ silk needed, for both cost of materials and the pokemon's time in making it. Cheapest possible is $325, most expensive is $11425; making the item highly impractical to make for pokemon over 10 foot tall [$2250].

Spent a long time on the logic of this one; though maybe I should go to less real-world and just make it some standard panel like most held items? And yes a thick piece of Spider Silk IRL would stop most bullets.

I could see it as a held item. Maybe. I don't really see much in my mind for openness to this. Making like a cloak or suit for pokemon sounds odd to me. Make it like a hold item in some way, shape, and form. Plus I'd like to be explained how exactly this "armor" gives the pokemon a random second ability if it only has one. Stuff like that needs to be explained, and maybe it is in the description but honestly, everything is so close together and big. (I just got home from work.)

I went in there and added spaces between the information, to make it a little easier on the eyes and a lot less like a block of text. I, like Kaz, would like a slightly more in-depth explanation of how the second ability comes to be, besides "lol it's a Joltik thing."

Kevlar is by far the most common fiber used to make body armor, but other materials are being developed.

The most readily available alternative fiber is called Vectran, which is approximately twice as strong as Kevlar. Vectran is 5 to 10 times stronger than steel.

Another rapidly emerging fiber is spider silk. Yes, spider silk. Goats have been genetically engineered to produce the chemical constituents of spider silk, and the resulting material is called Biosteel. A strand of Biosteel can be up to 20 times stronger than an equivalent strand of steel.

From here: http://science.howstuffworks.com/body-armor1.htm

I can sight a lot more sources, but that IRL fact is where the idea came from. Since Spinarak/Joltik is a giant spider it's spiderweb should be a lot like Biosteel, which is even in thin slices, bulletproof to small calibers.

I might make it simpler: a hold item that give +2 to DEF. Giving/ changing/ removing random abilities is confusing and hard to keep track of.

A few questions: Would this item be prone to destruction from fire? Wouldn't water weaken the bonds of the fibers, since that's how you process silk?

Just my thoughts. In general I'm nit against this idea, I just think it needs to be simpler.

My original effect was lowers odd of getting or completely prevent critical hits. I went to "Battle Armor" because it's an ability that does the same thing. IS "Prevents Critical Hits" better? Or lowers the foe's crit hit ratio on all moves?

Fire; probably fire on raw spider silk is like fire on human hair, it doesn't burn it shrivels up; still destroys it though. As for water, I'm really not sure...it's something to look into.

As for simplifying...a standard held item instead of varying with size is the easiest way to simplify, though I'm not exactly sure how to do so.

I really, honest to god, despise this idea. The image is cool and all, but making a cape for pokemon is just.. Idk, too much? My vote for this is a instant "no".
