Journey | Computer Name: Matthew James Wall Gender: ![]() Age: 20 Profession: Trainer Appearance: Even though his injury years ago kept him out of competition, Matt's exercise regiment had long since become a standard way of life for him, so he's still very much built for a fight - a musculature that's not quite the big bulk of a professional body builder, but not the sleak, lean, frame of a runner or swimmer. He comes in somewhere in the middle - big shoulders, rippling arms the size of an average person's thigh, legs to match, and a broad, almost barrel-like chest. For all intents and purposes, this is the kind of guy one would often see wearing on an interview segment between periods or quarters or whatever the blocks your chosen sport is broken up into, on one of the various sporting networks... but judging my his face, whatever team he was on, he would have HAD to have been the enforcer. Matt has a small scar across his left cheek, starting about an inch below the inside point of his eye and dragging down at a slight incline, to end about an inch and a parter below the outside point. He never talks about where it came from, but many over the years have assumed he got it in one of the school yard fights he was always involved in as a child. His eyes are such a deep brown they often appear almost black in low light, yet are able to betray a staggering ammount of personality. What's strange about them is that, build into the body of this hardened warrior, his eyes almost always seem strangely sad and defeated, as if he were constantly watching everything he holds dear taken away right in front of him. While one would never know to just look at him, Matt has a dental bridge about half way back on his bottom left jaw, replacing three teeth he lost in a kickboxing match when he was 17. He never lets himself be seen without it, though, embarassed to be found out, so it's never really been an issue. Years ago, in preperation for a wrestling tournament, and after being sick of the other guys inadvertantly yanking on his hair, Matt shaved his head (and I don't mean one of these half-assed attempts with a low set clipper like most people do when they want to be able to say they shaved their head, we're talking down to the skin here)... and after various compliments about how well it suited him, it kinda stuck. For years now he hasn't let himself go more than a week without baring the scalp again, and has no plans of letting life on the road change that. All of this considered, Matt is a nearly impossible presence to hide, and he clearly knows it... so he rarely bothers trying to stay incognito. Aside from the hat he sometimes wears to keep from burning his head, Matt tends to dress as relaxed and cooling as he can, because if he didn't his adaptation to his home climate would surely boil him alive, so a typical attire for him would be a pair of sandals (running shoes when absolutely necessary), a pair of knee-length workout shorts and a sleeveless or very light short sleeved shirt. Even despite this, he generally has to seek out air conditioning or shade fairly regularly, as the climate in Alternia is much warmer than what he's used to. Trainer Biography: Matt Wall was born and bred to be a fighter. His father was one of the world’s foremost mixed martial arts competitors, Alex “The Brick” Wall. It was a somewhat cheesy play on words, but with the size and build that ran in the Wall family, it was VERY apt. Alex eventually became so good and was so feared that the majority of fighters refused to go in against him, so he took early retirement to spend more time with his family. Upon doing so, he opened a pokemon gym that, in their home region, was known as “The Cage” – because Alex had fashioned the gym after the MMA arenas he used to fight in; bleachers on all sides where locals could, and did, attend gym battles, surrounding a floor with a trainer station on either side (located where the corner staff for fighters would set up in an MMA match) and a large MMA-style cage, in which the pokemon would do battle. The Cage was world renowned for being one of the toughest gyms in the world, with only maybe 5 percent of those who ever stepped inside taking the coveted Warrior Badge. From a young age, Alex tutored Matt in the martial arts. He would spend every evening either in the gym or the dojo becoming an elite warrior before he even reached high school, at which time his father also encouraged him into wrestling and football – anything to get him more athletic, more accustom to manipulating the bodies of his opponents, and foster the mixture of discipline and a mean streak that would make him a champion some day. He spent so much time either taking classes, working out, wrestling and playing sports that he completely bypassed the usual age for those starting on a pokemon journey. While all of his friends left to explore the world, Matt decided there were two ways he could deal with being left alone; he could let it eat him up in side, or he could put that energy into becoming even better. Between these two options, there was no contest, and before long his every waking moment became about perfecting himself in every way. He was no longer a boy being guided into his fathers footsteps; he was a punching, kicking, wrestling MACHINE. When Matt went off to college, he became a world class collegiate wrestler, and ‘The Cage’ became more of a seasonal attraction so that Alex could go on the road with his son and sit front row to cheer him on. Every since his friends had abandoned him, this was the most support Matt had ever gotten from another human being, and it touched him on a very deep level. Suddenly, they were even closer than a regular father / son duo. They were best friends, training partners, and when his parents ended up getting divorced in his sophomore year, they each became the only person the other one had. Then, one night on their way back from a big tournament, tragedy struck. Matt had just taken second, a rarity for him, and was eating himself up. His father tried his best to console him on the drive back, but the younger man would have none of it. He was absolutely determined that his short-comings had been a sign of weakness, and couldn’t forgive himself. The heated argument that ensued split his fathers attention from what was infront of them, leaving him completely oblivious that they were coming upon a truck that had been on the road the last twelve hours, and the driver was fading in and out. One poorly timed turn of the attention, coinciding with an exhausted nod of the truck drivers head, and two generations of the Wall family had their lives forever changed; knotted up in a pile of twisted metal. Alex’s side of the car was the one hit by the truck, so he took the worst of the damage. The once proud world class athlete would never walk again. In fact, it would be months before he could function even on the basest of levels. Matt, luckily, would make almost a full recovery… but thanks to a nagging injury to his left leg, his athletic ambitions were permanently curtailed. It took him weeks to come to terms with this, most likely breaking a world record for the fastest development of a drinking problem… but weeks later, as the open season in ‘The Cage’ approached, and his father was still confined to the hospital, Matt knew it was time to grow up and do it fast. With his fathers blessing, he switched focus and began studying all things pokemon – specifically as it related to the fighting type, his father’s specialty, and a type obviously very near and dear to the family’s collective heart. After several weeks, a man with his level of dedication and focus was able to learn more than most do in a number of years, and he was ready to carry on his family legacy. Dawning his father’s belt of pokeballs, Matt took up the mantle of new gym leader for ‘The Cage’ and lead his fathers pokemon to their first perfect season. Six months later, Alex Wall returned to the gym he had built himself… in a wheelchair. He may not have the same physical capabilities he once did, but his fighting spirit was far from broken. He insisted that Matt give up the mantle of gym leader, but not simply in the interest of doing it himself… but to encourage his son to go on his own journey. He bestowed upon his son a series of gifts – some empty pokeballs, a potion, some starting money and most importantly, two items that almost brought a tear to the younger man’s eye – his father’s own pokeball belt that he had worn since The Cage opened years before, with a belt buckle fashioned after the championship belt he had worn in his prime. The belt was hand crafted leather with the words ‘Brick Wall’ embroidered across the back, with pokeball slots on both sides. It also held a single pokeball, in which was housed an infant Tyrogue, one bread from his father's prized Hitmonlee - The Cage's biggest threat, feared all around the region, that Matt himself had lead to countless victories. It pained Matt to leave home and separate from his father and best friend for the first time in his life… but he swore to himself one day he would return home and join the very elite list of trainers to boast a Warrior Badge. He may not be able to fight the battles himself anymore, but one way or another he would become every bit the champion his father envisioned him to be so many years ago. So, he hopped on a bus which would take him to the nearest airport several towns away, and would go to the far off region of Alternia, taking nothing with him but the bare survival essencials, a few pokeballs, his new Tyrogue, and what would come to be his most prized posession... a Warrior Badge*. It would hold no meaning in his new home, but would serve as a reminder of his past, a tribute to his father, and a reminder of his brief time as a gym leader. (*On a side note, Matt's father also gave the Tyrogue a special martial arts style headband, that has the design of the Warrior Badge, a foreward-facing fist, with the fingers and thumb done in different colors to represent a variety of elements, on the front as well, so the symbol serves as sort of a bond between trainer and pokemon as well.) Personality: Matt is a hot head by nature. Whenever somebody dares to call him out, or put any of his values in question, his first instinct is to knock the offender's teeth down their throat. Over years of martial arts training stressing the importance of discipline, he's learned to control it to a degree, but there is only so far he can be pressed before the pent up frustration eventually finds his way out, and by that point there's so much of it, he's not the kind of person you'd want to be around, much less be the one who pissed him off. Above all else, Matt holds his father in particularly high esteem. Since they were always the closest two people could probably ever be, he will do anything to make his father proud. By the same token, however, he misses the old man dearly and insists on him being shown the utmost respect... so, should anyone find out about his background and decide to say something unbecoming about his father, it's a one way ticket to an ass kicking. He's similarly protective, if to a lesser degree, about most things about his history - the battle style and proud tradition of The Cage, the Warrior Badge he carries with him, his background as a fighter, and his connection to fighting type pokemon. Put simply, Matt is fiercely loyal. When he connects with something or someone he will do just about whatever is necessary to protect it/them, whether it be from actual danger, or simple disparaging remarks. Matt lives by a very simple code of honor, dignity and respect. He could care less about the actual law, societal rules, and the like... his sense of right and wrong begins and ends with this code. To that end, he often holds himself at a higher moral standard than many, but isn't above the occasional underhanded trick, if he sees it as beneficial to the greater good... so, for example, stealing from a wealthy person to benefit the less fortunate, or brutally assaulting a known criminal who might have otherwise hurt someone else, while not legal, are well within his scope. Matt has a definite weakness for attractive girls - especially since the climate and desolate nature of his home region didn't allow him a lot of experience in this regard. The right girl could twist him around, tie him in a knot, and leave him begging for more without so much as breaking a sweat... psychologically that is (you and your filthy mind.)
