Life is not a fairytale and there are no happy endings.

Ok, so unfortunately my laptop has finally died. It has been hanging on a thread for a while now if truth be told, and eventually it has come to terms with not even loading for me.. The piece of shit. So, whilst I don't have a working laptop, I am having to use my dad's.. And, if my dad found out.. I'd be hanging from a very tight rope right now. Which means, I will only be able to come here when my dad is in work, etc, etc. Even then, if I suddenly dissapear for more than 3/4 days just assume that I am either dead, or he has caught on and stuck a password on his laptop. It may take me a while to get a new laptop, I will most certainly have to wait for the next payday (24th december) and even then after paying for other things I may not have enough.. Unless I am lucky and I have a big wad of cash in my stocking the next day. *fingers crossed* So, the point of this topic being. I need your help. I am not the most, useful person when it comes to choosing things like a Laptop. I wouldn't know what to look for, I wouldn't know what memory is good and what memory isn't, I wouldn't know what was value for money or what was fast and I wouldn't know how much mansmex Snow likes. Here is a link to a few places around here that I can actually get too and that sell laptops/computers. If you wouldn't mind, just having a look and telling me what would and wouldn't be a decent purchase. I want a fairly fast laptop, with quite a good ammount of memory.. Aswell as (not neccesarily) having a good graphics card. Oh, and also somewhere within the region of £200-400 if that is at all possible. ¬¬ PC World Currys Argos Thankyou for your time. =D |

Well, 320-500 Gigs for a hard drive and 3-4 gigs for memory is pretty good. I personally like intel's pentium and core processors (of about 2-2.3 GHz) for what they're capable of. Pentium is more in your price range. And, since most things are going to have windows 7 anymore that's not really an issue. Then, just try to stay on name-brand laptops so you don't get shafted by a piece of junk in a couple months.

I know for about £400-450 one of my friends recently got a kickass HP laptop, amazing speed and graphics. ~4GB memory, I believe. I'll find out more if you're interested. And whilst I agree with Racer on getting a brand name, beware somewhat of Dells - the laptops themselves are fine (mine works perfectly well after two/three years, just a little slow to start), but the charge cables are fucked to high hell. I guarantee it will break in *some* way. >C

The thing about people recommending brands of laptops is that, everyone has different experiences with it. Some people love HPs, others hate it because its constantly crashing. So when looking for advice I highly recommend getting specifics on a laptop, then going with whichever brand has those or similar for your price range. Some key specifics you should look for in a laptop or computer in general: Processor: 2.0GHz+ ; really anything over 2 GHz should be fine, and since that's pretty much the average processor speed for most laptops now, it shouldn't be too hard. You could also get away with something like 1.8 GHz and it'd be pretty fast as well. Obvious, the higher the number, the better. RAM: Anything over 3 GBs really. That's essentially the average for most laptops nowadays anyways. Hard-drive: 100+ GBs , I'd say 100 would be the minimum, you could go lower if you wanted. And you don't exactly need something too high anyways, unless you're downloading an insane amount of Video Card: 1 GB or higher. Look around.. try and find the laptop within your price range that has the highest numbers. If you find something you like, you could always ask someone to tell you what they think about it. Keep in mind: MHz < GHz MB < GB :P |

Thanks for the information guys, it does help, honestly. I never know what's good and what's not when I'm looking at this type of stuff. >,< Yes if you found out that'd be pretty good, thanks Siki. :3 So really, what I want is 2GHz+, a RAM memory of atleast 2/3GB, with a hard drive of about 250GB. Amiright? The only thing I'm really not understanding is graphics cards. xD There seems to be alot of different types and none of the names are really meaning anything to me, any help there? So really, I'm looking at atleast £300. Urr, it may be a while before I have enough money. Also, my Dad clicked on and put a password on this laptop. Me being me however figured it out ^^; but now I have to play it real sneaky. ¬¬ |

Ashy is a British ninja. >>; As for video cards.. uhm.. if you want a name for one, usually the best ones are ATI Raedon or the Nvidia Geforce. A lot of their model names come with random letters or numbers, so I don't really know which models to recommend, which is why I said that for a video card, anything with RAM over 1GB+ would run great. |
