'Drain' attacks

Okay, so looking at Serebii' Attackdex for both D/P/Pt and the other generations, I've noticed that the drain attacks, specifically Absorb, Mega Drain, Giga Drain and Dream Eater all do not require physical contact. That being the case, how exactly are they employed in battle?

If I remember correctly, in the TV series, Ash's Pikachu went against a Bellsprout and the grass type used Absorb by placing it's foot? on Pikachu's forehead. So...I was under the impression that some kind of connection was required. Otherwise...couldn't you just start draining from where ever, or even just run while draining? Is there a range to this if you don't have to have physical contact?

As far as I know a green orb is released for the grass type drain attacks and as for Dream Eater I guess some ghostly powers are used or something.

Basicly a ball of green emergy is sucked out, which contains the HP & energy drained. It floats and/or shoots back to the user, and the user absorbs the ball. Dream eater is psychic powers sucking the dreams from the target, so it's alittle different.

Has some wierd power that prolongs the effects of psychic shields. Must study to learn more on how it effects the shields and if it can be used to assist in the teaching of the shields.

I don't mean to come across as rude, but...that doesn't answer nearly half of my questions. Yes, we have established that it's a green ball of sorts or possibly a mist.

But...Say two Pokémon are facing each other. We'll disregard Dream Eater cause it's a psychic move and has different capabilities. Anyway, if one of said Pokémon were to decide that it's going to use Mega Drain, does it need to move? I suppose what I'm asking is if those kind of attacks are evadable, or is it just "Magic Pokémon move grabs your HP and gives it to me while I stand over here"?

In the reality of things, it could be dodgable that way. However, that is determined by the mods whether or not it hits. Given the accuracy of the drain series, it will more often than not.
