Welcome to Alternia!
It was just starting to get dark in Nogou village. The sky was filled with dark clouds, though not a single drop of rain had fallen... yet, anyway. A few wooden buildings were scattered about right here, all overgrown with vines. In the center of the small clearing was a large, dark pond, surrounded by benches. People were walking all about, a few of them with pokemon, none seemed to pay much attention to you, sitting on the small bench, your back to the water.

Suddenly, THWACK! A large, red fish flew into the back of your head, narrowly missing the bench. You turned around to see the magikarp flailing about pitifully on the ground, a pink otter nearby. The slowpoke was lazily fishing, and must have tossed the weakling fish off of its tail. It slowly dragged itself up, and began walking over to its prey. The magikarp was flopping about, trying to throw itself back into the water.

Midori frowned, too absorbed in analyzing the dynamics between Kaori and Magikarp to even concentrate on what Kaori and the Magikarp were conversing about. (though, she could very obviously make out that Kaori was indeed not very happy to be with the Magikarp at all.) Even with her absolute befuddlement with the Pokémon tongue, Midori was smart enough to discern that Magikarp had some intention to go with Midori... but what would be the consequences of accepting Magikarp? Technically there shouldn't be any major problems if she could accept Magikarp's existence (since she is the trainer after all), but she wouldn't want to hurt relations with Kaori, would she?

When in doubt, reconsider your choices! Midori could probably throw Magikarp back into the water again, and hope that Magikarp would never be hooked up by another Slowpoke or something similar... but chances are Magikarp would be likely to flip back into her arms in clingy admiration of Midori. Or she could catch Magikarp, but Kaori wouldn't be pleased at all. Or she could reject the Magikarp...

Which was what she had decided on. With a relatively sharp mind like Midori's the trainer was able to come up with a myriad of pretty convincing arguments against why Magikarp should join her. And it wasn't hard to find excuses, anyway: Magikarp wasn't suited for a life of fighting, she might probably lose her familiar river home, she would have to face a lot of punishment in battles, Kaori would probably make trouble for her etc...

'Magikarp, I-'

Midori contemplated the Magikarp's expression, just as Kaori gave what sounded like a tongue-lashing to the poor fish. Kaori's (probably; Midori knew Kaori enough to count on her to scold the living daylights out of a pathetic fish like Magikarp) harsh comments didn't seem to turn Magikarp away, though; Midori could almost see a gleam of hope in the Magikarp's eye as it flipped around for a bit more. Which seemed to irk Kaori enough to unleash her (failed) Poisonpowder on the flopping carp. And what was the point of saving Magikarp from being Slowpoke's lunch, if it were to be murdered by a vengeful Oddish?

'Kaori, calm down.' Sigh. 'Let me do the talking.'

Midori didn't really need that, as a brown, otter-like creature came trotting out of nowhere, instantly grabbing Kaori's attention. Leaving the fish flopping uselessly on the ground, Kaori kinda decided to entertain the Buizel instead; hanging out with cooler company always appeared better.

'Um, I have to tell you something. Magikarp-'

...Gah. Midori's mind searched for a more appropriate way to phrase something this hurtful to the Magikarp, who seemed to be waiting in anticipation of Midori's approval. Midori's mind flitted to her firm-standing sister as she sourced for something to make her speak, make her reject Magikarp outright so that she wouldn't have to be haunted by the repercussions of her indecisiveness-

'...Fine. If you've really considered your choices thoroughly, then nudge this button if you really, really want to join me.'

What a convenient way to push the decision to Magikarp. Being the pampered, protected girl Midori was never really forced to, to put it bluntly, do the dirty work. Every hard decision was always made by her Mizuki-oneesan, such that Midori had neither the experience, nor the heart to do such a 'cruel' act as rejection.

On the other hand, where was Kaori? Apparently she had conveniently forgotten about Midori wishing to get out of the rain, instead indulging in her whims and fancies. She might have some casual conversation with the otter while she was at it, and even enjoy the rain a little longer. Dear naive Midori, on the other hand, was almost entirely controlled by her pampered Pokémon. Besides, she argued, there isn't really a point in evading the rain now that I'm so, so drenched.

Sigh, failings of a young, naive trainer. Must be hard making excuses for her own Pokémon.

Magikarp nodded happily, glad that you offered her a home … and a sense of belonging – well, you, as a human, wouldn’t know how a Pokémon felt when they were taken in. Um, perhaps not all Pokémon, but Magikarp definitely was happy. You could see it in her eyes in that brief moment when she nudged the button, and of course, when the light started to engulf her. Now that she was really and safely tucked within the capturing device, your Pokétech beeped, registering the new addition to your team. Congratulations, you just snagged yourself a new Pokémon (that Kaori despised)!

Kaori, on the other hand, didn’t really care what happened to the Magikarp, even if it was punted across the Everest and into the depths of the Atlantic. Never mind the geographic discrepancies; it just serves to show how much Kaori wasn’t concerned about her fellow Pokémon. The matter of the carp in the back of her mind, she struck up a casual conversation about the weather to the Buizel. Amazed by the friendliness of the Oddish, the Buizel naturally, couldn’t help but be a little wary of her. His species were wary of the Oddish species that occasionally lurked around the grassy areas, threatening to capture them within the snares of their energy-attacking orbs.

The Buizel folded his arms, twin tails whirring in the rain. The movement sprayed water everywhere and definitely onto Kaori. The Oddish shook herself, returning the ‘favor’ to the otter Pokémon. She kept up the conversation, bringing it to a different topic to keep things fresh. If you didn’t know or it wasn’t clear, you had a natural conversationalist right there on your side. It might or might not be an asset, seeing as Kaori had a tendency to pick her friends.

The rain was still pelting down ceaselessly. Kaori was now walking back towards you, Buizel on your tail. You probably have a really, really good day going on now – your Pokémon party was expanding already, and if Buizel was willing to join your side, you’d have another Pokémon (once again)! Buizel gamboled around you like a little puppy would, giving little yelps of curiosity as he tried to peer into your eyes. Naturally, his legs were muddy from all that running around, and as he trampled across your legs, well …

“Bui!” he yelped happily, before diving into the water, seemingly inviting you to join him. Kaori turned up her metaphorical nose at once at this invitation. Water wasn’t fun … not when it was raining like this. She seemed to wonder: how many other Pokémon were going to be as potentially pathetic as Magikarp?

You’ve got a handful, girl.

Admittedly, in a more amicable weather Midori might have seriously considered the option of persuading Buizel to join her. The notion of being this lucky early in her wandering 'career' was unsettling to the point of being almost unethical on Midori's part, but she - or rather, her clothes/bag - honestly could not endure more of this relentless rain just to entertain Buizel; she was quite happy to let this one pass, and she was almost certain that the Buizel was almost just as willing to retain its freedom as it should. To be frank, though Buizel might make a good addition to the team... Midori had more than enough capturing in such a short period of time (one of which wasn't even intentional) to satisfy her, and the rain was more of a concern than that 'Gotta Catch 'Em All' attitude.

Kaori might lose a friend which it had made just minutes ago, but from how Kaori seemed to refuse to join Buizel in the water (as its species naturally would), it was clear that 1) the physical differences between Buizel and Kaori, which were exacerbated by Buizel's thoughtlessness(if it were sincerely trying to befriend Kaori) or bluntness, were enough to remove whatever little emotional attachments that Kaori forge with Buizel over the last... ten minutes or so, and 2) Kaori was definitely not that invested in the causal friendship anyway, since Buizel was certainly not that interested in the Oddish as well.

But Midori still wasn't used to being the commanding voice, having been subservient to most of who she had interacted with. To Mizuki that willing servitude and obedience emerged from pure love and respect for the adorable and strong onee-chan, and to the matron in the orphanage it was out of inevitability that she had to listen to that old wretch, though she would not hesitate to show her disdain, or reveal a little bit of rebellious nature. To control an Oddish that was more of a Princess than her, that needs a bit getting used to.

'Kaori. Kaori!'

Midori was already done with the packing-up, having accounted for all the (albeit dismal) things in her possession: a small amount of cash, a cool-looking device and four Pokeballs, two of which are filled and two of which are empty: one obviously for the haughty Kaori (who would probably never stay in such a confined space), and another for capturing purposes. Time to recall (not literally) Kaori and get on with the journey; even if she were already rather wet (considering that it had been raining since the fight with Slowpoke) she would still love to get out of the rain at this point in time.

The Oddish reluctantly wadded over to her trainer, without noticing one bit about the mysteriously disappeared Magikarp. Whatever the case was, the little Oddish knew that Midori was boss.

'Let's go, we got to hurry.'

Wanting to find her way to the Pokecenter was one thing, actually getting her way there was another. Using whatever conjecture and navigating skills she had, Midori rushed in the direction of the scattered wooden buildings, deducing that the Pokecenter would probably be in there somewhere, if it were not one of the buildings.

It was lucky that Nogou Village wasn't as big as what some metropolis might be.

Head of Registration - The Exploding Train
The Pokemon Center of Nogou Village stuck out like a sore thumb. I mean it is the only massive city-looking building in the whole town. You run through the rain, getting wetter the faster you sprint. You make it to the Pokemon Center and sprint up to the counter, explaining the situation to Nurse Joy. Wordlessly, she nods and takes your Pokemon back to get healed. As you waited for your Pokemon to get healed, you mull over today's events. It seemed to take forever. Most people would be getting anxious. After what seems like an eternity, Nurse Joy returns with your Oddish and the two other Pokeballs announcing that they were as good as new. It seems like Kaori still doesn't want to travel in the Pokeball. One might want to work on that.

As you step outside, you notice the rain has disappeared! It's a beautiful, sunny day. You scratch your head and look around, trying to figure out what to do next. One could go searching for wild Pokemon, go traveling to a new area, or even start a battle.

Speaking of battles, you happen to be noticed by a young trainer playing with two little Nidoran. They turn to the sound of someone exiting the Center and wave you over.

"Nice Oddish! You wanna try it out in battle? We could do a two on two battle! Let's do it!"

The kid's Nidoran sprung into battle formation. Apparently they were eager to stop hopping around and start scrapping. Well you have a choice it seems. You can either accept the battle, or talk your way out of it and do something else. What do you do?

Admittedly, Midori hadn't even considered her purpose in the region. Her first concerns upon regaining consciousness were too short-sighted and immature; beating up on a Slowpoke just to avoid seeing a scene of gore and violence (which was only just Slowpoke devouring on Magikarp, but either way the imagery would never be pleasant for one so normal as she.), and capturing a Magikarp just to avoid facing the guilt of rejecting someone...

It was only until when everything was momentarily taken away from Midori, that the little girl could suddenly see her actual predicament in its entirety. Beyond all that fun, individual bouts of battling Midori was now left with the blatant truth: she had little money, she had absolutely no kith or kin here, she had no home... in short, she would have to find a means of survival here, in addition to whatever she might want to do. The orphanage had been mercilessly unkind to her, but at least she was never once deprived of daily necessities: throughout her life, everything had been taken care of by one authority or another. She had desperately yearned for freedom, as do nearly all teenagers, yet until the point where she was totally detached from her burdens... she had never stopped to think of how she might exactly survive. She had, in short, taken the secure and stable life given to her for granted-

Odd!

Contrary to her outward display of impatience (leaning unglamorously on the walls of the Pokémon Center) Midori didn't find it exactly that long a wait; perhaps it was the bugging issues lashing at her that distracted her from the painful wait, and the rainy weather meant that she wouldn't be moving around even if Nurse Joy were fast. Giving a courteous nod to the Nurse and placing her Pokeballs back into her slingbag, Midori paced slowly out of the Pokémon Center with Kaori resting right on top of her straw hat. Good thing the rain had ended; Midori was just slowly drying off during the wait for her Pokémon's recovery.

The sunny weather did seem to push Kaori's mood to a newfound peak, but Midori was not so cheerful, pondering over what she should do next. Look around here for a decent job? Or move on to a bigger city, where she might find better job prospects? Perhaps not; Midori would prefer a peaceful village over a city anyday - she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon. But to find something to occupy her and hopefully secure her livelihood-

"Nice Oddish! You wanna try it out in battle? We could do a two on two battle! Let's do it!"

'Eh... a battle?'

She wasn't expecting to get into a battle this soon, not when she was hoping for her newly-healed Pokémon to last at least a day. To come out and return back into the Center within a few minutes was a bit... bizarre, right? Still, she couldn't find much of a reason to refuse or accept; she was neutral either way, as she always was. She would have rejected the battle, if not for the blatant fact that she had absolutely nothing to do. At least a battle would keep her engaged, and her Pokémon slightly fitter. Right?

'Your call, Kaori.'

The Oddish looked in disdain at her new opponents, as though she would have nothing to do with the two restless beasts or whatever they were... or did she? Rolling conveniently down Midori's hat and landing square on her feet (how did Kaori do that?) the Oddish let out what would have been an affirmation of battle, instead it just came off as a cute, little growl on the Oddish's part. Sigh, Midori will never tell what Kaori was thinking about.

Midori searched her bag - now with an inexplicable addition of a Lollipop, a few more Pokeballs, a disc-like thing (looks like one of those things that Okasan used to teach Pokémon some moves) and a fat stack of substantial cash - for the more competent of her other two Pokémon: the Slowpoke, who had some fighting power at least. During the course of the battle Kaori seemed infinitely stronger than both of her Water-types, but it was probably due to a matter of characteristics. Or so Midori reasoned.

'This will be Kaori, and the Slowpoke here is... is... Hima. Please guide me along!'

Her first trainer battle, huh...

'Kaori, remember the spore-searching technique? This time, search for the spore that can induce Sleep into the enemies, and unleash them on the male Nidoran - that's the purple looking one, with a pronounced horn! Follow that up with an Absorb! Hima, uh-'

Why can't she recall what Hima could do? No matter, a quick browse through the Poketech (or so it's called) would tie up some loose ends.

'Hima, Growl at the Female Nidoran - that'll be the one with a blue hue and no horn on her forehead -, then Yawn at her!'

'Kaori, remember to search the spores from within the core of your leaves; take your time to discern which is which. You know the ones that produce a Sweet Scent - ignore them. The one that you've released on Magikarp - that'll be Stun Spore - ignore them as well. If you can tell which spores are which based on the chemical composition or physical properties, which I'm sure you will in time to come since you're the one that created them, you can categorize them based on their characteristics! That'll make it easier for you to master all three skills: Stun Spore, Sleep Powder and Poisonpowder.

After that, all that's left will be to unleash them on the targeted Pokémon. The method of dispersal is identical to that of Sweet Scent: Dance around to catch the wind for a bit, and unleash them in the Nidoran's direction. If the wind's in your direction, go with the flow; if the wind is going against you, spin in a counter-cyclical fashion - that'll be spinning against the wind! Since there is no rain, your attack should not be diffused as it did just now. And don't forget the follow-up Absorb this time!'

Kaori - Attempt to use Sleep Powder, then Absorb
Hima - Growl, then Yawn.

“Guide ya!?”

The boy seemed a little taken aback by your statement, blinking as he did so in surprise. Either way, he pointed vaguely towards your two Pokémon and nodded to his partners in … uh, fight. He ordered the male to use Leer and Peck consecutively on Hima, while the female would battle Kaori with her Leer and Scratch. You were pretty lucky, once again – Peck would be dealing effective damage to your Oddish, and we all know where that takes us … anyway, it’s time for the full battle chronicles (no matter how cheesy that might have sounded).

Hima stared blankly at the male Nidoran, to which both Pokémon started bellowing some weird noises. Well, mostly Hima, anyway. The Slowpoke was giving out little grunts as he shifted his weight to face the female Nidoran, and couldn’t help but be a little confused. After all … the complete difference in target was starting to get to him just a tad. After letting out a purr-like growl, he opened his gaping maw, only to shut it promptly when the horned Pokémon gave him a deadly stare to the eyes. Shaking his head slightly while comforting his shaken ego/resolve, Hima opened his mouth once again to yawn, trying to induce sleep in a couple, no, the next turn.

The female Nidoran turned towards Hima to attack, and that was when she saw the Yawn attack. Now that she was drowsy, she couldn’t help but lag a little in her advance towards the large Pokémon, but she still made it there to deliver (yet another) Leer and Scratch with those talons of hers. Claws dug deep into thick flesh, dealing some damage to Hima and at the same time – the male companion of hers darted speedily towards the Slowpoke. The poison barb Pokémon snagged a rather soft spot with his horn, but only managed to pierce the skin lightly when Hima decided that this was the appropriate time to start moving.

Now, without all the attention on poor little Kaori, you were free to tutor your move of choice – Poisonpowder – to the plant Pokémon. After digesting and taking in your orders quietly, Kaori proceeded to do a little tap dance where she was – there was no wind at the moment, save for a small breeze. She unleashed sprays of spores towards the small group of three. Due to the ‘spread’ nature of the attacks themselves, she wasn’t able to avoid targeting Hima … not to mention his naturally large, uh, surface area. Anyway, through the air, you could vaguely see specks of purple, the characteristic of Poisonpowder as it gently glided through the air to the battling Pokémon, though it was still mixed in with a couple other types of spores. Never mind, at least it was a pretty good attempt – the above-average majority of Kaori’s attempt was filled with the poisonous powder.

Panting after all that spinning and dancing, Kaori summoned up her energy that manifested in a ball of green, which then screamed towards Nidoran (the male!). The Pokémon was knocked back briefly, but the force wasn’t enough to knock him off his feet and subsequently, cause him to topple over. He was much sturdier than that, anyway …

“Ugh!” grunted the boy, “This is going to be some trouble! You’re good with your Pokémon!”

Midori was nearly as impressed as any other trainer with regard to how fast the Oddish was improving in terms of firing the Poisonpowder... before realising that a Poisonpowder would probably not have any effect on poisonous Pokémon themselves. And given how nasty the sting on the male Nidoran looked Midori would bet that the Nidoran was no innocent creature in the fields of potent toxins. Which is a true pity, since the two wouldn't be able to display Kaori's effectiveness in terms of dispersing poisonous toxins all around.

Not that such an act was Kaori's hobby or something. Though the Oddish did seem to be displaying some premature signs of satisfaction at sucking the life out of anything she disagreed with. Seemed.

The Slowpoke, on the other hand, was actually a lot more apt than how it looked. To be honest, Hima had way more tact than Kaori, but Kaori's nature gave it a more visible advantage. The Oddish was ready to move, ready to strike, and had some potentially skilful tricks up her sleeves, while the Slowpoke, despite appearing a lot less keen and acting a lot less aggressive, did things that count. A lot. Like dodging a painful blow just at the nick of time, and being able to put its opponents to sleep.

No more time to play, though. Time to get serious (hopefully).

So far, all that the two Nidorans did were physical attacks: if Midori could somehow shut off all the physical capabilities that the opponents had, like maintaining a distance or trapping their opponents, then her Pokémon could at least get a few shots in without worrying too much about the Nidorans' counterattack. If anything, Kaori should know that the Peck from the male Nidoran was deadly. To her, anyway; Hima probably doesn't care.

'Kaori, Hima, time for a new strategy! Listen carefully, because it only gets more confusing from here on.

I don't know about the two Pokémon there, besides their species type, but I'm willing to bet my lunch that these two probably have some poisonous substance up their sleeves or something; Kaori, that Poisonpowder was way beyond what you did the previous time... but your opponents don't even seemed to be fazed by it: they must probably have some immunity to your toxins. Hima was close to getting poisoned, though, and Absorb didn't seem to do as much as we'd hope to. Therefore, we have to shift our strategy from trying to poison/stall-for-time to immobilizing them as completely as possible.'

Which means new moves.

'Kaori, you are not affected by poison either, so being in direct contact with either of the Nidorans is ok for you. Anyway, I want you to attempt a Charm at the male Nidoran (the wide awake one), then follow-up with a Belly Flop at the same one.

As a young, cute Pokémon you certainly have the adorable factor to entice Nidoran - you'll be better than Hima in this aspect, any way. What you have to do is to capture the attention of the male Nidoran first, before using whatever cute charms you can to convince the male Nidoran not to hit that hard. You can rustle your leaves, do a little tap dance, hop around in a friendly manner... just act as though it's a blasphemous act for the Nidoran to actually whack you. Remember, the main purpose of this is to cut the Nidoran's attack, so that he will be more inclined to whack everyone with less force.

As for Belly Flop, you know what to do. Just pounce on the Nidoran and try to squash it to the best of your ability.'

Now for Hima. This will be a bit trickier.

'Hima, listen up. Attempt a Confusion on the female Nidoran (the sleeping one), then Yawn at the Male one after Kaori does what she needs to.

Confusion is a complex skill. To actually manage to confuse anyone, Hima, you'll need to stare intently at the opponent you're targeting at, and focus on disorientating its mind. While this is impossible for many other Pokémon because of the lack of sheer brainpower, your mind is powerful enough to do it, having been used to nullifying pain through deliberately slowing yourself. Consciously alert yourself to the current status of the Pokémon you are targeting, and redirect the mental energy, which you use to retard your movements, on entering the state of your opponent's mind, focus on its current thoughts, then attempt to shift these individual thoughts around so that it will cause a momentary mental disorder on your opponents. If successful, your opponents will suffer a significant headache and slight disorientation/sudden loss of purpose, and if you are exceptionally capable (by luck or by skill) then your opponent will even turn against its owner, too befuddled by your actions.

Whatever you do, keep your mind entirely focused on confusing the female Nidoran's thoughts and ignore the other one; Kaori will take care of it. And wait till Kaori's done before using the Yawn on the male Nidoran!'

Battle Sequence in order:
1) Kaori - Attempt Charm on Nidoran (m) | Hima - Attempt Confusion on Nidoran (f)
2) Kaori - Belly Flop on Nidoran (m)
3) Hima - Yawn at Nidoran (m); this must be the last move.

Well, finally time to do this reff. Really sorry about how long it took.. So you may get or may not be getting little advantages from the wait... We'll see how well you do plainly, first.

Move tutoring and regularly battling at the same time usually takes a Pokemon's focus off of the attack being learned, so the Pokemon doing less would probably do better. In this case, Slowpoke happens to be doing the least, but have a slightly trickier attack. But, we'll start with the Oddish first. Charm happens to be an Egg move, so not only will it be harder, but you'll have to get it all the way up to 200%. Oddish dashed over to the male Nidoran, and winked at it. It wasn't entirely not cute, but it could have been somewhat more pleaseing ot the eye. He was generally uneffected, though, and used Peck in retaliation to the failed attack. This did alot to the grass type, who used Belly Flop angrily at the poison rabbit Pokemon. Although... Nidoran weight more then Oddish.. So it didn't do all that much.

Oddish scooted back to let Slowpoke dish out his own attacks. It first used Yawn to make the Male Nidoran drowsey, so he didn;t have to worry about it all that much. I then turned to concentrate on using Confusion on the sleeping poison type. Stareing at the sleeping Nidoran, it began tapping into a mostly unused part of it's mind. Grasping small wisps of Psychic energy, it began digging through it's own power, drawing enough to able itself to reach out to the Nidoran. WIth dificulty, it jabbed at the outsides of the Nidoran's consiousness, actually doing slight damage as it did. Although, the attack overall didn't live up to it's full power, and also didn't disturb the sleeping target any. Though, Slowpoke had made a great leap in the attack, being able to access the part of it's own mind where it's psychic abilities sleep. This alone ensured a bulk of the attack could be sucsessful, thanks to being enlightened on it's own habits. Now, you had to focus on getting more power out, and sucsessfully intruding on the target's mind, and then screwing everything up for them. Not too far now...

Anyway, battle wise, both opponents were about to be sleeping, one already. Charm might be a lost cause, but Confusion was going somewhat good so far. With both opponents sleeping next turn, though, tutoring may be hundreds of times easier. Unless they wake up...

'Great job there, Kaori and Hima!'

Honestly though, Midori was short on ideas on what to say. After fiddling with the Poketech thing for a bit, she got to know a bit more about her opponents at the very least: Poison types, resistant to Grass moves, weak to psychic-based attacks, pretty much physical foes... Right, now that she actually knew something about her opponents, she wouldn't be doing too much to screw herself up or something. Not that she was doing too badly for her first battle; at least the male Nidoran did suffer some damage, and both Pokémon would soon be escorted to slumberland.

And then there was the evaluation for the move tutoring. Kaori, like her previous attempt at Poisonpowder, was pretty much not too successful in her attempts to entice Nidoran into reducing his attack. In any case, Charm was not an easy attack to master. Hima, on the other hand, had the flair of picking up Confusion despite appearing to be quite dimwitted all the time. Never judge a book by its cover, as they say. There's nothing much to say for the battle, though; what would the boy say if she were to take advantage of his Pokémon's slumber to dish out an attack or two? Even though Kaori and Hima seemed to be more battered than either of the Nidorans health-wise, she had an entire turn (or two) to even out the playing field.

And the boy would probably complain about her being unnecessarily cheap, but hey, all's fair in love and war. AND she did follow actual battling rules, on top of it all.

'Ok, Kaori! Charm didn't work out too well as we'd have liked, but that was a pretty decent effort, as I'd always expect from you. No point Charming them now though, since both will be off to sleep in a turn or so. Time for a change in plans, again.'

Hima continued staring blankly at his opponents; he was never the one to react quickly in any case. Kaori, on the other hand, drooped slightly in response to her less-than-desired Charm, though she knew perfectly well that this was the time to continue her assault, not brood over a failure in Charm.

'Kaori, you're pretty much hurt from that Peck - now you know how much it hurts to be hit, so watch your step! Since both of them are asleep for now, you can do anything to them provided it is not performance-based. In other words, Charm won't affect them since they won't even know you're there. So...

Practice your Poisonpowder again, then end off with an Absorb on the male Nidoran to finish your turn.

There's no need to dance around too much this time, since there's barely a breeze. Aim directly at the Pokémon, and this time disperse more of those powder. Don't worry; the more conscious of the use of this type of poisonous pollen, the more pollen will be produced by your subconscious body functions. In essence, be generous with the spread of the powder, and concentrate the spread on only these two Pokémon: you almost got Hima poisoned just now, and we don't want that... do we?

Hima, you're doing well with the Confusion! I want you to beef your defense back up with a Curse, then practice Confusion on the Male Nidoran.

You've sort of figured out how to draw the psychic energy from within your mind and nudge into your opponent's mind. Now, I need you to amplify that by focusing more on the Male Nidoran, and keep all your attention on the little creature. If your mind is solely focused on an object, that'll heighten your concentration and be likely to increase your psychic energy as a result. As for entering the Pokémon's mind, try to go beyond a slight nudge: make sure you pierce right into the creature's mind as best as you can, and then reshuffling its thoughts, consciousness... everything inside its brain. Just mess it all up - we can practice deliberation later, but as of now it's crucial that you at least master the basic skill of Confusion first.'

Kaori’s leaves wilted slightly, dejected. She stared at you for a moment; Poisonpowder was even more successful than this was! How was this even possible, she was wondering … ah well, there was no use crying over spilt milk, right? Lowering her joined body and head to take a step forward, the Oddish took in a deep breath and straightened up. She felt that it was the time to give this yet another shot, if it was only to please you. She racked her brain to search for the spores, effectively sorting out the characteristic pink spores of Sweet Scent. She was doing a mighty good job right there, don’t you think? All that was needed now was for filter out the other spores, and you were home!

Unable to project the spores without a little dance, Kaori decided to remedy the problem by shaking herself violently. Even though it made her look like she was throwing a fit, the Oddish, surprisingly, found it agreeable enough with her. The purple dust cast through the air was rather thick, though yet uncontrolled. Hima stared upwards with his round eyes – wondering what it was – before his brain gently, slowly, came to the conclusion that Kaori was trying out Poisonpowder. The glint within the plant Pokémon’s eyes scared him somewhat; it was almost like a spirit had taken over Kaori!

Lifting his bulky body up and away from the cloud of spores, the Slowpoke hastily planted himself on the other side of the battlefield. He let out a contented sigh as the dust settled around the Nidoran duo, glad to be away from … whatever those things caused. Hima wasn’t in the mood to know, anyway. Kaori stared back at you, rather worried; it wasn’t without cause, though, as the gravity of not successfully controlling the cloud’s dispersal sank into her.

“Odd …” she said, rather dejectedly. Green wisps of energy started to gather around her leaves, forming an orb that hurtled towards the purple Nidoran. With a cry from your Oddish, she let the attack connect with the already-sleeping creature, dealing some not-very-effective damage. Still, it healed Kaori somewhat, so you might want to repeat it a few more times to get her health up … or you can start working on Stun Spore. It seemed like Kaori knew Spore A from Spore B now, you know.

Hima started to glow with a strange white energy, his defense and attack raising as a result; however, his speed took a dive, hampering his already slow speed yet again. The Slowpoke halted for a moment, trying to remember what exactly you had told him to do. His tail gently waved in the air as he thought; Kaori tapped her foot impatiently on the ground. She wasn’t Hima, and she remembered what to do! How slow can a Pokémon get, anyway!?

And then, he remembered.

“Poke!”

He closed his eyes, as his skin started to gather a faint aura of pink. It definitely was a good sign; it seemed like Hima had a good knack for the powers of his psychic side! He had no problem tapping into it, as you already know – the problem was messing people up, actually. He couldn’t really bring himself to destroy … um, whatever. He didn’t know what he was doing in the first place. He forcibly shut his eyes, trying to delve into the male Nidoran’s mind. At first, it was hard regaining the ‘feel’ of sliding in, but as he attempted more and more; it gradually got easier for him. However, when he did finally get in … Hima didn’t quite manage the will to mess the thoughts of the Nidoran, and thus, retreated prematurely.

Oh well, he tried, didn’t he?

[OOC: Just a casual question, will mastering Poisonpowder successfully help in the tutoring of Sleep Powder and Stun Spore? i.e: easier mastery, or a premature given percentage for both attacks? And for the record, move tutoring's in white.]

'Oh, wow. Both Nidorans are still asleep...'

The outcome wasn't too surprising, really. While both Kaori and Hima did do two moves each last turn, neither of them was meant to really deal too much damage. Since both Pokémon were relatively untouched (Hima got cold feet at the last second, while Kaori's Absorb did nothing more than prick Nidoran's health by a little.) they should still be sleeping anyway. Which was a good thing, since that meant that Hima and Kaori practically had two more free attacks at their disposal. This was no indication that Midori had clinched the battle, but things would be tipping heavily in their favour if the two Nidorans continued sleeping.

Which was a rather uncomfortable thought to Midori, since putting a Pokémon to sleep and hammering it seemed a little low, though it was technically under battling regulations. And the boy probably didn't expect both his Pokémon to be put to sleep this quickly, either...

'Kaori, that was pretty successful! We'll repeat what you've done last round: Master your Poisonpowder on these Nidorans (No point firing it elsewhere and poisoning random innocent things, right?), and follow up with an Absorb on the Male Nidoran to restore your HP, bit by bit!

By now you've pretty much mastered the skill of firing the poison spores; now we'll have to focus on reducing the energy needed, and making the poison efficient. The method of shaking violently to disperse the spores works pretty well, but the downside is that you'll lose control of where the poison spores go. We're in the advanced mechanics now: by now you'll have to take note of the wind direction, the positions of your opponents and your allies, the most comfortable way for you to release the spores... You get the gist. This time, try to dance slowly but confidently, and focus your efforts on dispersing the spores in a concentrated cloud, instead of allowing it to be so scattered.

If it helps, bend down with the core of your leaves facing the Nidorans, where you are about to release that huge cloud. The dancing helps you get momentum, but for Poisonpowder you want accuracy, not widespread dispersion. So, dance and bend towards the Nidorans when you're about to release the poison. By this stage, I want your Poisonpowder to be scattered on the Nidorans directly, and Hima should not get hit even if he were to stand still on the spot.

It's your responsibility to make sure Hima does not get hit; it's not Hima's responsibility to ensure that she does not get poisoned. We're close to a Pokecenter so it's not too bad even if Hima gets poisoned, but should I need you to use that in the wild then this aspect would be extremely important.'

Back to Hima! What a surprise to find out that the Slowpoke was actually the one to be relenting in his attacks, not Kaori! Despite the Oddish's self-portrayal as an adorable, harmless little Pokémon she did seem more zealous in draining the life out of her opponents than Hima did, though it could be simply a confusion of interests - Hima was no passionate Pokémon in anything but dawdling...

In any case, the first part of Confusion is now nearly complete: Hima was pretty much successful in entering the Nidoran's mind. Now for him to actually deal some damage... was it a moral clause that got Hima to withdraw from the Confusion attack? Or was it just because the Slowpoke was too lazy to exert more? Or could it be that Midori wasn't clear in explaining how to do it?

'Hima, excellent attempt with the Confusion: Kaori and you are learning so fast! Right now, it's crucial for you to master that Confusion well, since we'll need it to defeat both Nidorans... and for future purposes as well. This time, try Confusion twice on the Male Nidoran - enter its mind, reshuffle its thoughts, leave and redo it again.

I noticed that you're very skilled in drawing out the Psychic powers from your mind; see what you can do when you put your mind to it! You shouldn't have too many problems with intruding the Nidoran's mind now, though with a little more practice you'll definitely be much better. For one, I need you to expend less energy on the confusion: that'll require efficiency on your part in drawing the power from your mind, and entering the Nidoran's mind. Get some practice with that.

The crucial thing is, however, how you reshuffle the thoughts of the Nidoran. I'm no expert in this, but I'll try to explain as best as I can on how it works. You must understand that in the subconscious mind of any living thing, there exists a certain hierarchy and order of memories and knowledge. While the mind will eventually organize these vast amounts of information and translate it into sense for the living thing, a Psychic can easily enter the mind and distort this natural sorting-out, either by reshuffling the memories in resistance to the mind's way of thinking, or modifying the memory.

Let's take an example. As of now, the Nidoran knows of you and Kaori as enemies. When you enter his mind, you can search for that or other pieces of his memory, and reshuffle that memory in a different location or preconception. If you, say, place his knowledge of you and Kaori in his past, he will be confused as to whether you and Kaori are his enemies, for while his innate mind tells him so, your influence tells him otherwise. And being no expert in mind control, the Nidoran will not know that you were the one messing his mind... at least until later.

Since you're pretty much new to this skill the Nidoran will probably figure it out in the end, but during that period of your interference, he'll suffer excruciating pain in its mind, while he tries to sort out his thought process. If you're not so good (which you probably will be at the moment), Nidoran will still be shaken pretty badly by that headache, but no confusion. If you manage a particularly successful hit on Nidoran, he'll still suffer that headache, but this time he'll really believe in what you tell him, and instead turn against the other Nidoran until his natural mind sorts things out. In essence, a good Confusion will cause damage AND confuse the opponents. '

Midori looked at Hima and realised how cruel it must sound to be messing around with someone's mind, and even distorting their memories. Whatever would the female Nidoran, who probably had quite a bit of friendly memories with the male Nidoran, say if her boyfriend (or rather, boy friend) had attacked her just after she awoke? Might Hima refuse to do it because he believed that this might cause permanent damage to the two's relationship? Better set the psychic-type's mind at ease.

'In case you're wondering what happens if the male Nidoran really gets confused, Hima, the effects will wear off after a while, so long as you don't keep jabbing at his mind. Remember, we'll only do it to the extent of making it concede defeat or defeating it, but nothing more.'

Your Oddish nodded. She seemed rather discontented at the fact that she had to avoid Hima, instead of the fat oaf avoiding her. This was quite disturbing to her; with a large surface area like the Slowpoke’s body, it was going to be hard not including him in her field of attack! However, since you had (so) politely requested, Kaori proceeded to work on Poison Powder. She danced around lightly, spreading even more of the purple dust in a concentrated amount – this time, there was no other ‘contaminants’, that is, spores of the other type lingering within her attack. It seemed that controlling her spores would be no problem now … or would it?

As the cloud hovered, moving slowly towards the Nidoran couple, Hima started to worry. The pink Pokémon gave a yawn of indigence, his head tossed backwards in apparent rebellion. Either way, he managed to actually look cute pulling that stance off. Kaori smiled at Hima; he was amusing sometimes, but for the other times, he was annoying. This was one of the former times, so you had nothing to worry about for the moment. The twin Nidoran, as usual, weren’t fazed by the poison cloud.

“You should’ve learnt by now it has no effect on both my Pokémon, dummy!” yelled the boy, chortling with amusement. Apparently, the disabling of Pokémon had no effect on him. How strange a young child, don’t you think?

Hima gently slid back into his ‘possession mode’, a glow coming over his body yet again. He plunged, deep into the Nidoran’s mind, finding a lot of unnecessary memories that only served to hinder his progress with Confusion. By the way, the rather large words you were using completely flew over his head, apparent when he quickly withdrew from the first Confusion to stare at you blankly. Oh well, since you ordered a second try, he would do just that.

He took the dive once again.

“Slooooooooooooooow.”

Kaori glared at him.

Before, or rather, within his mind’s eye were several images. They were totally strange to him; as slow as the Slowpoke was, he knew that they did not belong to him. Immediately, he repelled those thoughts, sending them away from his brain as quickly as possible. With a jerk, the male Nidoran awoke, only to have the Absorb (thanks to Kaori) sink into his torso. The Nidoran shook his head, his body not really affected by the grass-type attack. At this sign, Hima turned back to you, a goofy grin plastered on his face. He did what you wanted, right? (Or so he thought.)

Kaori sighed, waddling up to her partner-in-battle and started telling him off for his, um, incompetence. It seemed that the Oddish did not quite know the theories and execution of a mental assault.

Midori smiled apologetically at the boy, knowing that tensions would definitely rise between rivaling trainers during a battle. Who wouldn't want to taunt or intimidate their opponent with words, if that should unsettle their composure and cause them to lose confidence in whatever they were doing? The boy, however, was wrong on one count: granted, Poisonpowder did not exactly work on either Nidoran... but Midori's intention was never to poison the Nidorans in the first place. If anything, Midori merely intended for Kaori to practice her spore-scattering skill on the two Pokémon while they slept, simply because it was the safest way to practice the attack.

With that said, Midori's apologetic sentiments to the boy didn't meddle with business at all. Since this was a battle, her objective was to win, no? And besides, both Hima and Kaori were getting good at what they were supposed to be doing, so things should only get better. Should.

'Kaori, time to drop the Poisonpowder act. Use Absorb twice on the male Nidoran! Hima, I need you to practice on your Confusion skill. Two Confusions, along with Kaori's double-Absorb, should be enough to whittle down the male Nidoran's health, yes?'

Both Hima and Kaori turned around to look at their trainer; the Slowpoke was still maintaining the gormless grin, though for a good reason. Despite Hima's stupid demeanor that often angered Kaori to extreme levels of fury, this little Slowpoke had a pretty effective method when it came to manipulating his mental strength. Hima might be slow and forgetful, but this Slowpoke was one powerful Pokémon. Kaori, too, had her strengths as well, but her inability to admire Slowpoke's, or anybody's for the matter, strengths would get her into serious trouble someday. Probably.

Midori reverted back into seriousness, as her eyes found the trainer she was battling, again. The apologetic light smile was no more, replaced by an unsmiling but confident appearance with a glint in her eyes that withheld a tinge of venom; it was similar to that of Kaori's glint in her eyes the first time she attempted a Poisonpowder on the two Nidorans. Like trainer, like Pokémon; was Midori intending to crush the two Pokémon, just as Kaori was intending to harm with her Poisonpowder? (even though she knew that the attack wouldn't hurt the Nidorans...)

Maybe. But as of now, Midori was going to make sure that one of the Nidorans would be no more.

Well, another person teaching their Pokemon moves. It seems like that's the only thing on the RRT anymore but you can't really blame people. They wanted things done and they wanted the right person to do it. Which in this case, is me. But this is supposed to be about you, not about what I'm supposed to be doing. So, on with the ref.

You looked at your Pokemon and told them what you wanted the to accomplish in this round and they sat out to do. Honestly, the other trainer was beginning to get a little freaked out by you with all the smiles you were giving him. Honestly, I'd be a little freaked out to but Kaori and Hami seemed to be fine with. Kaori even seemed to be acting just like you a little.

Kaori and Hami both turned to face the Male Nidoran and started to go to work. Kaori let out an Absorb as the Nidoran let out a Leer attack. Both moves hit but one was more useful than the other, which was your Absorb attack. The Nidoran than charged at Hami and Kaori quickly turned to use Absorb again. This time, Nidoran's attack hit first, which was Peck, and Kaori was slightly off with her aiming and accidentally hit Hami. Hami flinched a little bit as he was hit with the Absorb but quickly returned to his somewhat lazy posture and began to concentrate for a Confusion attack. After a few seconds of concentrating, he fired off the attack at the NidoranM. The attack hit and did quite a bit of damage and made the Nidoran flinch around a bit. While the Nidoran was flinching, Hami quickly fired off a second Confusion and finished off the Nidoran. There was only one left and it was still sleeping. This one should be a lot easier to handle.

The round was now over and the battle was turning to your favor with every passing round. In just a few more, this battle should be over and you should have a few moves added to your arsenal. Speaking of which, Hami was able to finish learning Confusion. Congratulations, I'll update your profile shortly.

...And this was it. The last leg of the race: one down, last one to go. What an surprising display of ability by Hima, to wipe out the then alive and kicking male Nidoran. There really wasn't that much to say about this round: all of it had been so smooth that she could find nearly nothing to complain about. Well, besides Kaori's (intentional?) mistimed Absorb, Midori couldn't really say much to dampen their mood. Unless the other Nidoran was a highly powered Snorlax in disguise or something, which was extremely unlikely, this match was in her bag. Especially if the Nidoran could keep on sleeping, keep on sleeping...

Oh, and YEY for Hima mastering Confusion!

'Excellent work, Kaori and Hima! We're left with one foe left, but be careful nevertheless. Kaori, try a Sweet Scent on the Nidoran: it might lower the urge of the Nidoran to wake up, since the scent should lower the Nidoran's awareness to attack. Follow with two Absorbs to restore your remaining health. Hima, with your newly-acquired Confusion this should be a simple jb for you. Unleash the attack three times on the Nidoran, and make sure you perfect the skill while you're at it.

Oh, and don't hit Hima with an Absorb again, Kaori.'

Feeling slightly better about the match (which seemed uncertain at the start... though once the Pokémon were off to Slumberland both Kaori and Hima were already expecting a full-fledged victory), the two Pokémon sprung to life again, the familiar air of superiority and bloodlust surrounding Kaori in contrast with Hima's lethargic mood. Having Hima practice a new move over and over again should prove to be tiring for the Slowpoke, so Midori was pretty glad that the battle seemed to be coming to a close. Well, at least the Pokémon Centre was close by, so neither the Nidorans nor Midori's Pokémon would have to endure their injuries for too long. That, and Midori was getting uncomfortable with the notion of her Pokémon beating up on the boy's.

The interesting thing now was not the outcome of the match (sorry to sound arrogant, but this match *should* end up in Midori's favor... unless a Salamance pops out from nowhere and fires a Hyper Beam at a Rhydon, which would topple over all of them or something... [/Jsol'sjourney]), but the boy's reactions after the match. Would he take it in his stride? Would he make a fuss out of it and accuse Midori of cheating? (which might cause an unnecessary dent in Midori's reputation around this area) Would he...?

...Meh, he was the one that requested for a match.
