Hard as I try I know I can't quit :3

You had come quite far from your old home on the Emperor. Tragedy had befallen you in every kind of way, and I'm sure it would leave a heavy burden in your heart. Thankfully, burdens can be lifted once you experience healing and maybe make some new friends now that you were here in a new land.

It had been a few days since then, and you had been drifting and/or swimming off and on for the majority of your escape, so the sight of land was enough to brighten your spirits, at least. Even if you preferred the ocean, it would be nice to rest your weary body for a while. All that swimming can really tire a penguin out, even if you are a water-type. That, and you were getting pretty hungry. To go from having a cozy life as captain's pet to being a loner in this big wide world meant things wouldn't be so easy for you any more, as you were well aware, I'm sure.

As you neared the shore, you could see a few humans sitting silently with their fishing poles out, the lines drifting idly in the water. Beside them was an open cooler with sodas, beers, and icecream. Of course, you couldn't tell what was in it from so far away, but it was pretty obvious to Pokemon that any group of humans was bound to have a plentiful stock of food for themselves. And, with any luck, you could charm it out of them. Or steal it. Or get someone to charm/steal it for you. You know, whatever works.

However, as you came steadily closer, a tentacle reached out and snared you around the waist. Before you could make a fuss, however, it dragged you underwater, muffling any sound you might have tried to make. It seemed like life just wasn't going to let you get away unscathed, hmm? Well, thankfully for you, this actually wasn't the case. You soon surfaced a few feet away in a thick reed, bushes overhanging the water so you couldn't be easily seen.

"Are you crazy?" the tentacool demanded of you, shaking his free tentacle at you while still holding on to you with the other. "You can't just waltz on up there with humans about! They'll catch you and sell you off before you can say tuna sandwich!" The mention of food got your stomach rumbling, and the Tentacool laughed. "Yeah, I getcha. Food can be scarce during summer sometimes. Ocean ecosystem's kinda hectic right now, actually. Everyone's trying to raise their families while the weather is good, and they like to take as much grub as they can. So you got fights breaking out in the reefs, and blah blah blah ..."

The 'blah blah blah' indicated that your attention had begun to wane. An intelligent discussion of the local Pokeconomy might have been interesting if you weren't more interested in finding something to eat first. Suddenly, loud yells broke out from the area where you saw the humans. Relinquishing his grasp on your tummy, the Tentacool swam forward to get a good look at the happenings. "Holy bologna!" (Damn it, there's another food reference!)

Were you to peer out of the reeds and take a look for yourself, you would witness a rather interesting spectacle. One of the fishermen was being savagely attacked by a large Carvanha while the other men ran for their lives. ... wait, they're just going to leave him there? Fishing poles were scattered about, bait tins had been knocked over, and best of all that cooler was now completely unguarded. You could waddle on over there and have yourself a feast! Then again, if you were the more chivalrous type, you might, I don't know, think about rescuing that man? I mean, he's getting blood everywhere.

Admiral Bubbily

Bubbily’s belly gurgled impatiently over the din of his bewildered thoughts – so many different stimuli bombarding his senses all at once had confused the little penguin, and he had not the slightest clue about how to react to the large colorful fish before his eyes or the strange customs of the creatures who lived on dry land. The Admiral’s adoptive family aboard the Emperor had always gone out of its way to explain new sights and ideas to him; should any of the crew have spotted something interesting, he was sure to hoist little Bubbily up so he could look too, while explaining slowly so that he could make sense of it.

Entirely unprepared for life on his own, this young penguin still expected a helpful voice to help him along if he was bamboozled, and as such was now at a loss. Without his family, he hadn’t even been able to catch food for himself, and would likely have starved had he been at sea for a few days longer. A far cry this pampered Piplup was from his wild brethren, famed as they were for pride in their hunting skills. No, Bubbily would not have lasted half a day in the frozen tundra.

…Hungry…

The humans were making a great deal of noise, yelling and stumbling over their own things – so much that Bubbily’s ears hurt a little – and the good admiral was instinctively inclined to read the situation as trouble, except…Humans were weird. Back on board the Emperor, our protagonist had been a witness to such bedlam many a time whenever the sailors were drinking late at night; everyone had been shouting, singing, and roaring with laughter and fragile objects like glass and virginity had always shattered left and right. Of course, no one ever had any qualms about their youngest crewmate – Bubbily – helping himself to some of the alcohol, so the Piplup’s memory was a bit fuzzy.

Actually, Bubbily wouldn’t have minded having some of that funny drink – maybe the humans would share!

Besides, if nothing else, this penguin understood the concepts of food and eating, and the scent of human food was overwhelming the little guy, latching onto his hunger and reeling him in. Hesitating, however, the admiral was able to exercise some measure of self-restraint – it wasn’t that he was shy or apprehensive about appearing before humans, given his good experiences with them since a young age, but the Tentacool had said something about not…waltzing?...up to the land people, and he didn’t want to break some sort of rule and make the Tentacool mad, for fear of being glared at disapprovingly.

But I’m hungr- Oh! Not possessing a particularly impressive attention span, the little one’s internal complaints were abruptly derailed by a sudden burst of movement. ”Hey, wait for me!” The Tentacool jutted forwards suddenly! Did that mean it was okay to eat now? …Well, more importantly, the jellyfish wasn’t paying attention to Bubbily anymore, so perhaps permission was moot. So much thinking was hard on this penguin’s mind, anyway, and he was getting left behind!

Pushing through the reeds and paddling through the shallow water until his little feet found the sand, the Piplup moved clumsily towards the food the wind, in carrying over the tantalizing smell, had promised to him. His lady the sea must have had some purpose in carrying him to this place, and the admiral wasn’t about to waste her blessings – perhaps these humans would become his new caretakers? Bubbily had been very, very lonely these last few days – hunger aside – and was quite eager for company, after all. Despite the weariness in his muscles, the penguin felt a little bubble of excitement beginning to swell within his chest, the promise of sustenance and friendship revitalizing him.

Although at first, Admiral Bubbily’s rumbling tummy had led him straight towards the food, on caprice he veered towards the human dancing with the fish instead, their inexplicable antics arousing his curiosity. Didn’t humans eat fish? Wasn’t the human hungry? What were they doing? Quite the straightforward character, Bubbily decided that talking to them would answer his questions the quickest, and so waddled closer, although to be honest his resolve was still somewhat conflicted; for such a little thing in a foreign environment, he was salivating far too much at the prospect of food and not paying nearly enough attention to his surroundings. The Piplup had failed his common sense roll as well, but at least that could be chalked down to naiveté.

”Hi.”
