Mod Training...

An idea I hatched in October 06, quite sure Tohea started using it after I spoke to someone about it there.

The concept is a "Referee Training Course" where by anyone who wants to be a Mod, but isn't good enough or doesn't trust their ability as a Moderator can take a course into Refereeing, which covers every aspect necassary. Personally, I think this would work, we have a HUGE member base with plenty of them wondering if they have the ability to be a Moderator, and this is not only an easy way to find out, but also there is no time-limit on it, so they can spend time researching and trying new ideas.

Anyway, just a thought, would like the feedback of members who either hate the idea, or would actually be willing to try the course. (It doesn't make you a Mod, it gives you the training to be one in the future or the chance to find out its not for you). As well as the opinions of my fellow staff.

Thanks,

I remember an area like this on Tohea, and I always thought it would be a good idea. Is there no training currently here?

I like the idea, this would be very helpful for Geo >> I think it should be mandatory to take the course if you want to become a mod and have had no experience with reffing. And no Itsuki, there is no training course here at the time.

Just a basic idea, but this is what I used at my old site;

Quote:

If you have signed up for Refereeing, you will be put on a course/Program, which ever you prefer. Now you are doing this, because you want power and to be a Moderator. Which is great, I like to see it here. So in the future, we may lack Moderator's, thats other sites downfalls, they make panic appointments (I have been a Panic Appointment before) and to keep a constant supply of Moderators here and with us, and a great back up if I ever need a future Moderator, you have had the training and can be thrown in at the deep end for a bit.

So here is the, basic outline of the course you will be running through. It is quite long, so be prepared to read and re-read. I will try to explain it as much as possible.

1) The Basic Refereeing
The first Section here, this is also, possibly, the most challenging. I will start off with a poorly grammatical one liner and you have to respond in a way you see fit. After that I will give you a Roleplay with 2 Paragraphs, from that I want to see your ref, and how it differs from the first. Try to make better Refs for better Roleplays. After that we will go into Starting, During, and Ending Battles. This is useful for the HP, Energy, Damage and EXP systems here at Kanto Region. You may be asked to re-do some of this. Hopefully you will pick this up and clear the first stage nicely. At the end of the course and after successful marking, you may be re-directed back to this course. Even newly appointed Moderators shall be brought back to this course if they have yet to do it, or haven't done it in a long time. This is a fundamental role in your Reffing and if you can't pass this section, over however many attempts, you may not be picked, even if you pass the rest with flying colours.

2) Adding Pokemon to the Pokemon Starting List
This bit seems quite simple? Not exactly, it's actually a really complex matter. If someone registers and takes one Pokemon off the list for there registration, then fine great, you just replace it. In the Moderator's Lounge there is a list of Pokemon you can spawn, you may add anything from the categories 0-20, 20-40 (All explained in the Mod Section) to the list but if say, 20 new members suddenly join us, rather than just add 1 or 2 to the list, look to add about 5 or 6 to replace 2 or 3. Just to cover us. If we are going through an Inactive phase, you don't really need to add to the list do you? If there are 20, 1 is taken, but no registrations really, you don't need to add, another 1. This is fairly easy to pass, and test's will be done to make sure. Quite an easy section really.

3) Spawning Pokemon
This is, also, important to our RPG atmosphere as we can't have a Moderator, spawning, a level 70 Snorlax, that jumps inside a Pokeball.... You will be instructed about this when you take the tests. You can only spawn pokemon in your numerical category, all explained in the Staff Area. This is a fairly complex system, and we just want to check you don't screw it up. It's simple enough if you keep to the numbers.

4) Profiling
On a busy day, I may have Banners, Buttons, Skins, Problems, I.P issues, Competitions, Graphics and my own life, including Social, Coursework, Homework, Field Trips and in January, A Residential Trip. So we need to make sure you can do an easy job. Profiling. It's really a Cut and Paste Job. Here, you will be given three of four different fake registrations, to make into a fake Profile. Another problem with Profiling that occurs is the Journey and Permission Mask. If your not an Admin, you MUST PM an Admin or direct the member to the Permission Mask Thread in RPG Discussion to get it changed, or request it. Another thing, whenever you do a Profile, you must create there Journey too. The rule is - Make a Profile. Make a Journey. That is so crucial to the infrastructure and way society works around here.

5) NPC Creating and Controlling
Want to create the Next Prof. Oak? Yes, we all do, we all want to create an NPC that gets involved in just one or many storylines. The only real difficulty is making them believable. And to an extent what they can and cannot do. A Moderator cannot make a mass murderer but yet an Owner can. Despite the fact making someone up seems simple, such as trainers. You need to be clued up about it too.

6) Rules
No explanation needed. I will submit a few Frequently asked Questions to you. You need to answer them. A Mod who doesn't know rules.. and some of these aren't rules, just questions that will inevitably be asked, that you need to know how to deal with.

7) Plots and Storylines
What makes a good journey? A good set of Plots, Twists and Stories. But overdoing it can ruin one. And laying it out, giving rewards etc, can be a challenge and can actually cause problems, and debate. You need to know what you are doing in this section of Reffing, as it is influential in our promotion. If word spreads our Plots are rubbish, we lose potential members and become inactive very quickly. So I want my staff team to be on top of these things and know what to do and when. Who With and everything else that comes with it.

It's basic, its easy for me to do, and it helps a lot. I've hired countless staff this way.

I agree with it. But who would run the courses? We don't have many higher staff. 3 admins. 2 Umods and 3 Gmods. I don't expect 8 people to train people, along the stuff they do already. I think i would be able to help teach people, though. In fact, Starr has been coming to me alot and i have been helping her alot. (hence why she calls me Zy-Sensi) I'm for it, but i'm not sure how exactly it would be run.

You could upgrade some of the more senior mods, maybe make a Moderator Training group or something of the sort, and they could do it

I think it could be left in the hands of us retired staff who still have the time to do it, we don't actually Ref anymore unless it's absolutetly necassary, but quite a few of us still find time for the boards.

Guys I have been currently working on a system to do this ever since the Geo incident. Actually I think I'm pretty much finished. All I have to do is post it up as an official training test on the Admin board.
