You strolled into Millenia and looked around. The entire town wasn't that big to begin with. But it would be a nice, quiet place to start with your Numel, that little cutie. Right now, the little camel was aimlessly wandering about beside you, lowing softly. His attention was on the sky though. For all you knew, there was a storm a coming and you should get inside somewhere safe.

Then what the Numel had been watching came into sight. The large carapace fluttered into view before it landed on the ground. The red and black bug scuttled about before finding a nice patch of warm grass to sun itself. The back part opened and the wings came out as it lied in bliss. Well, Numel could go out and pick a fight with a defensiveless bug. Or you could wander about town, maybe check out the Meteor Field if you're interested.

Joseph was only half-surprised to hear the sounds of someone scrambling into the room; even though he had known there was something outside the door and he had moved in part to give them room to enter, he didn't actually think someone would do it. After all, who just randomly enters a mystery room from an alley? ...besides me... Especially a fairly attractive white-haired girl, as Joseph managed to discern when the psyduck launched an attack at it's heinous trainer's behest, with a brief yellow attack this time.

The sudden hand over his mouth was rather...irritating, but since it was obviously the girl's, and she seemed to be on his side, he let it slide.

"My name is Shaira, and I need us to be quiet." She brought a finger to her mouth to emphasize her point, and Joseph nodded his consent. "I need to know how much you know." The sound of another attack signaled that the other woman was too caught up in her own vile little world to have noticed either Joseph or Shaira yet, and the former opted to keep it that way.

"My name is Joseph." He began, quickly and quietly. "If it's about this room in particular, all I know is that that creepy woman over there is abusing a group of small pokemon, including a starly, with her psyduck and kirlia. Why, I have no idea." The young man paused, as he had spoken more rapidly than he was used to. Inwardly, he hoped the girl had caught all that. "The reason I'm in here in the first place is because I was following a ledyba that I caught a little while ago, who was apparently suffering from amnesia at the time, along with a volbeat who I'm fairly certain is her friend. I followed them down this alley, and after they went out of sight and started battling with something, I foolishly came in here thinking that the volbeat was inside." He paused again, for the same reasons as before. "The only other information I have that might be relevant is that some guy with a spinarak and a zubat was following me, but I don't know where he went. Did you catch all that, Miss, ah, Shaira?

As you spoke, explaining what you knew, occasional flashes from the Psyduck allowed you to see Shaira's expression. For the most part, it was blank, crossed with concern occasionally, but little to no surprise. It seems you've scored yourself a teammate, somehow, assuming that she wasn't sympathetic to the tall woman.

"I got it," she muttered, and then turned to stare at the newly-illuminated form of the Psyduck's trainer. You could see, then, her face betray an utter disgust for what she was seeing. I guess that clears up the question of her affiliation. "Thanks." She paused for a moment, and then the next thing you know, she pressed a pokéball into your hand. "I don't know how strong you are," she muttered into your ear, "but I'm not taking any chances. If she's still got that Kirlia, then that's the main threat. I've only got one pokémon who can deal with that. But that - " she gestured at the pokéball she had just given you - "should help with anything else she might throw at us. Psychic trainers are pretty predictable, afterall." She smirked in an attempt to lift both your spirits, and you just managed to see the expression, partly because your eyes were kinda adjusting to the weak light. The random flashes weren't helping any. Shaira moved away from you then, and you heard the distinct sound of a pokémon being released from a pokéball.

It seemed that this noise, rather than your hushed conversation, finally caught the attention of the enemy trainer, who you sensed hesitate in her happy decimation of the restrained pokémon. "Psyduck," she began, and you pretty much knew she was going to add 'use Flash' when there was a cry from the other side of the room, and the psychic energy from the Kirlia went out completely. The woman gave a startled yell, and then finished her command, and the tired Psyduck illuminated the room once more.

This time, when she looked at you, she looked right at you.

"No!" she mouthed, and then her face twisted into a nasty smile; without another word, she whipped out a pokémon of her own, and a rather large Drowzee began to make an immediate advance on you. But you were not this woman's only concern; now that the room was lit up, you could see that the Kirlia was being brutally attacked by what you could only assume was Shaira's Umbreon. After the initial surprise strike, however, which had gone very well for the Umbreon, it seemed that the two pokémon were actually evenly matched. The woman didn't even have to bother commanding the Kirlia, who seemed to have far better luck choosing her own tactics. No, she was focused on you, her eyes narrowed, her expression a little confused. It seemed as though Shaira had managed to escape detection altogether. As well as this, now that the barrier was down you could also see the slumped, weakened forms of five pokémon; the Starly you knew, but there was also a Taillow, Weedle, Seedot and Paras. Uninteresting and common, perhaps, but still clearly victims. Shaira, however, had completely vanished; out of the corner of your eye, just as you were absorbing all this other information, you saw the flick of a foot as it disappeared out of the open doorway on the opposite side of the room. She'd left you alone in this fight, it seemed.

Almost without needing your input, though you may have subconsciously pressed that button yourself, the pokéball she had left you flashed as it released its contents. A moment later, there was the distinct shape of a balloon floating in front of you. The purple pokémon called out his name airily, and pulled a clear defensive stance. He hadn't even need to see you to know what was going on and that you were not Shaira. He knew his duty. Do you know yours?

Watching Shaira's expressions as the two talked made it clear who her allegiance was, and the thought of an ally against this woman was reassuring. Especially one who could supposedly handle a kirlia, and had a spare pokemon to loan to Joseph. Am I strong? Not really, not now. If Ace was here, things would be different...but 'what ifs' don't have any purpose right now. He thought absently to himself, running his fingertips over the pokeball that had been handed to him.

Then, the action started. Shaira left Joseph's side and released a pokemon, disrupting the woman's kirlia before she could see what had happened. Joseph, realizing it was time to fight, stood up, and the subsequent flash gave both him and his opponent an opportunity assess the situation.

The woman, seemingly not noticing Shaira or the umbreon that was attacking her kirlia, sneered at the young man and sent out a drowzee. Joseph, who was far less familiar with the room, glanced around quickly, taking in the presence of the five pokemon along the wall, as well as Shaira's exit from the room. With only him, the woman, and the various pokemon in the room, it was clear what he needed to do. Pressing the orb's button on instinct, he quickly glanced down to the poketech on his arm, looking up some basic information on his opponent as well as his ally. Drowzee, eh? It might not know confusion yet, but then again, most psyduck don't know flash. Hypnosis and disable will definitely be a pain...this drifloon doesn't seem to have many attacks, but it's type is good, so it shouldn't be difficult.

"Drifloon?" he said, turning his gaze back towards the woman. "Minimize, then astonish."

Like Shaira said, psychic trainers are fairly predictable. She'll probably attempt to disrupt my ability to attack with hypnosis or sleep before launching a counter offensive of her own. Minimize should help drifloon dodge the first attack, and astonish is definitely my best bet at dealing damage right now. I'm not sure how it'll interact with minimize, though...

(Summary/Important Info: Told drifloon to use minimize, then astonish.)

The woman definitely knew what was going on with the Kirlia, she just knew that commanding it would do no good. The Kirlia could take care of herself, she heartily believed. Besides, she couldn't deal with more than one battle - and you were right in front of her, with your ghost-type balloon. She snarled a little. Ghost type and dark type... you had the advantage. She believed you owned the Umbreon, you see. Shaira had managed to completely fob this trainer off on you - but you just had to hope that she really was on your side. That Drifloon she had given you as protection seemed a pretty good argument for her friendliness, though.

The Drifloon immediately adopted a defensive stance, fluttering his long, slender arms in anxious anticipation of the battle. The Drowzee gave a long, low call, and with encouragement from the woman, approached the balloon pokémon. Her eyes began to glow just as the Drifloon, obeying your commands, shrunk drastically in size. This caused the Drowzee to hesitate, since she now had to aim her Hypnosis carefully. It seemed as though the enemy strategy was pretty much as you assumed; at this level, Drowzee didn't really have many other options, though. There was a loud crash from the other side of the room, and the Kirlia shrieked in pain; a rogue psychic attack, having missed its target, went flying towards your group and smacked into the wall, vanishing into nothing, fortunately missing you all. This distracted the Drowzee for another millisecond, which was all the time Drifloon needed; the moment that the enemy started to try and pinpoint your ally, she realised that she couldn't see it at all.

The next moment, the Drifloon had appeared again, violently striking the Drowzee right on the face as he rushed at her in the stealthy part of Astonish. The fact that he was small meant that the attack's damage was slightly reduced, but it was a good hit anyway. The Drowzee recoiled slightly in surprise, but recovered quickly. The woman, standing behind the Drowzee as you were standing behind the tiny Drifloon, gave a small nod. You could see the Drowzee mimic the nod, and suspected that they were communicating telepathically. This wasn't necessarily good for you. The Drifloon, having used Minimize, was partially expecting to be struck at just so that he could dodge it with flair, but that wasn't the tactic. He froze for a moment as the Drowzee's eyes began to glow again, this time with a white light, and then they were both still.

The tiny Drifloon floated unsurely back to you, ready for the next command, but obviously shaken by what had just happened. Since you hadn't heard the command, though, and Drifloon wasn't able to communicate with you, you had no way of knowing for sure what had happened. You could make several educated guesses, though. So what will you make of the next round?

Joseph was somewhat relieved to see that his opponent wasn't going to command her kirlia in battle against Shaira's umbreon; it meant that umbreon had a better chance of winning, but the woman's attention wouldn't be divided between two opponents. Nevertheless, assuming Joseph had properly judged her character, Shaira should return to help him out (if he needed it) once the stronger psychic-type had been taken out.

He was also relieved to see that he had correctly guessed what his opponent would try to do, as he watched the drifloon execute his commands, dodging a hypnosis in the process. Then, Joseph noticed something. So, she's giving it telepathic commands, eh? Such a strategy might scare an amateur, but I have enough experience to now that it only makes a difference if your attacks aren't made obvious...for instance, drifloon's astonish was probably disabled just now...a set back, but I can deal with it.

"Don't make eye contact with it, Drifloon," he told the ghost as it floated back to his side. "Unless you want to fall asleep. Now quickly, circle around it and use Strike twice, and aim for the back of the head."

This will probably work the best...disable doesn't last too long, and even though I could probably break it by returning drifloon, that would open it up to hypnosis as soon as I sent it back out...constrict might help disrupt drowzee's vision, but repeated blows to the head should be more useful in breaking its concentration.

(Summary/Important Info: Told drifloon not to make eye contact with drowzee, then circle around it and use two strikes at the back of the head)

Seeing that her telepathic communication wasn’t riling you, the woman sneered slightly - but it didn’t stop her from continuing with the silent orders. As much as it wasn’t unnerving you, it was still inconvenient. Drowzee’s eyes began to glow with Hypnotic power as the Drifloon set off. Putting your team to sleep was her tactic, it seemed - until it became apparent that the Drowzee was completely ignoring the Drifloon, and looking right at you. The Drowzee lifted her arms and was about to cry her name in triumphant release of the attack, which would likely knock you unconscious, when suddenly the Umbreon was nearby. The Drifloon was about to Strike the back of the Drowzee’s head as the Umbreon used Helping Hand, shoving the Drifloon harder into the Drowzee using a well-aimed hit of his tail. The Drifloon, unhurt but strengthened by the Umbreon’s assistance, pummelled into the back of the psychic foe. This couldn’t have been better timing; the attack interrupted the casting of Hypnosis, saving your awakened state. It was clear that this woman fought dirty, though was it any surprise? You had seen her abusing weak, restricted pokémon for her own enjoyment, apparently.

Seconds after helping the Drifloon, the Umbreon cried out as he was struck from behind by a powerful Psychic attack; unable to spare more time to aid you, he span about and lunged at the Kirlia, who was glowing an ominous shade of purple. The Umbreon slammed into the foe, and their hectic, vicious fight continued. Back in your corner of the room, The Drifloon struck again at the Drowzee, making sure that Hypnosis was ruined. The Drowzee growled with irritation once she had recovered, and turned about, aiming an annoyed Pound at the small Drifloon. Despite the Minimize, the attack landed, sending the startled balloon to the ground. The woman wasn’t paying attention, it seemed; she was rustling with the bag at her feet, trying to close it, and the Psyduck was still wearily putting out a Flash which lit the entire room. Sweatdrops poured down his head as he continued the attack, despite it faltering every now and then; swearing at it, the woman would kick or slap at the pokémon to ensure it continued.

Joseph, radiating confidence, stood up straight, folded his arms, and smirked as he watched the unfolding battle. His mind, accustomed to the thoroughly-regulated battles at the Violet Gym, was expecting his foe to mentally order her drowzee to try hypnosis again, and possibly add another disable to stall for time if nothing else. He thought it was a little odd, though, that neither psychic seemed to be paying the borrowed ghost any particular mind.

Then, Shaira's umbreon reappeared for an assist, using helping hand to speed up drifloon's first strike, disrupting the hypnosis in what Joseph soon realized was perfect timing. Inwardly, he cursed himself for thinking this sort of fight would be the same as what he had been accustomed to, having come to the realization that the hypnosis had been aimed at himself rather than his pokemon.

In frustration mostly aimed at himself, he briefly closed his eyes, forcing himself to calm down. It was obvious that umbreon and kirlia were still fighting viciously, and drifloon had followed through with a second strike, just as ordered, although the drowzee's counter-attack was a tad annoying. The woman, meanwhile, was rifling with the bag at her feet, and keeping the psyduck's flash active with a little bit of abuse now and then.

Now, Joseph had obviously never fought a battle quite like this before. However, he had enough experience to determine when an opponent isn't strictly trying to 'win' the battle in the traditional sense. Given what he knew, Joseph decided that this was probably one such situation.

Of her three pokemon, kirlia is the strongest, and is needed to keep Shaira's umbreon busy. Psyduck seems to be the second strongest, so why isn't she using drowzee and not it? Simple: drowzee is better for, well, disabling an opponent, which is what she's been focusing on with it. When drifloon wasn't put to sleep, she tried it on me, and now that's failed. Psyduck needs to maintain flash so she can see what she's doing, so she can make sure I'm not a threat and thus change her focus to umbreon. If that 'Plan A' has failed, 'Plan B' should be...

"...escape..." he muttered, letting his arms fall to his sides. Quickly, he turned his attention back to drifloon. "Okay, good job, keep it up! Just like before, circle and use two Strikes at the back of the head! I'm counting on you Drifloon, and Umbreon as well!" Snapping his gaze back towards the woman, his eyes narrowed. "As for you..." he growled, clenching his fist, tensing his muscles. "If you're gonna attack me, do it yourself!" Suddenly, Joseph dashed forward, left fist primed and ready, aiming for a square punch to the woman's jaw.

(Summary/Important Info: Told drifloon to circle around and use strike twice more to the back of the head like last round. Also, Joseph is using Punch on foe Heinous Trainer)

You pretty much had it dead on. The woman's attitude had shifted from dominating to edgy. She hadn't counted on you lasting that long - nor her Kirlia failing to down that Umbreon fast enough. She didn't like that she was fighting two battles at once, though was actually unaware that she was fighting three. She finished her business with the bag, and lifted it. Though the bag was large, it was now mostly empty, and she slung it over her shoulder with ease.

This momentary distraction was plenty of time for you to charge at her. She hadn't been paying attention to your threat; it was clear she didn't think of you as much more than a nuisance.

In the next few seconds, rather a lot happened.

Drifloon, far from put out by the Pound, circled back around the Drowzee and prepared to Strike her again. The Drowzee attempted a second Pound, which failed, and was rewarded with a heavy Strike. Understandably giving physical attacks up as no good, the Drowzee's eyes began to glow purple again, just as the tiny Drifloon Struck for a second time. However, the glow wasn't disturbed, and Drowzee finally managed to execute a perfectly aimed Hypnosis. The ghost balloon, rendered unconscious in midair, fell quiet as he fell asleep, floating peacefully in the air. The Drowzee gave a shriek of delight; finally, something was going right for her.

In the opposite corner, the Kirlia gave a defiant cry before finally falling to the Umbreon. It was clear that the Kirlia was more powerful, but the Umbreon's type advantage had only just managed to tip the balance. It was clear that the Umbreon was suffering for it, though; he panted heavily as the Kirlia slumped down, knocked out, and almost looked ready to collapse himself. In comparison, the five pokémon - the three bugs and two birds - who had previously been used as Psyduck's 'target practice' (or so it seemed) began to stir, and show an awareness of what was going on.

Outside, beyond the doorway Shaira had ran through, the sounds of a third battle rose up. This must be what is distracting Shaira. There were only two familiar cries: that of two certain bug pokémon you followed here. The fact that they were still going was a good sign, but it's unknown if there are still going strong. Let's hope that Shaira was fighting on their side.

Possibly the most important thing to you right now, though, was the fact that you were lunging at the woman, fist out. Due to being distracted by the bag, and not being a very agile person, you connected neatly. Her head flew back, eyes wide, and a little spittle flew from her thin lips. Her body shuddered, and she stepped back. Then she looked at her. Her eyes were livid, and you only had time to notice blood trickling from her bottom lip when the room instantly became dark once more. Since the Psyduck had been the only real source of light - and a very bright light, at that - this caused that funny effect in your eyes where everything was impossibly dark. Even the tiny bit of dull light which trickled in past the gaps in the boarded-up-door was blanked out. In this moment of blackness, the woman right in front of you hissed. She just hissed. The next moment, your mind was on fire.

Your eyes saw nothing but a swirling purple as your body felt weightless, and you rose into the air, immobile and unable to fight it. You could feel a menace pressing in on your consciousness, a terrible pain just threatening to burst in and tear you apart, one braincell at a time.

Psyduck's Psychic was only warming up, though, when something - blessfully - intervened. You however, caught up in the increasing heat of Psychic, had no chance to see what happened. The next thing you knew, you were on your knees, your head throbbing. Time had little to no meaning as your brain tried to get to grips with the fact that you had just been abused by a rather powerful Psychic attack, even if it hadn't had time to charge properly. You blinked, and something rested gently on your shoulder. You recoiled out of instinct, for the last you knew, you were in a fight with that horrid woman. The voice which spoke softly in your head, though, wasn't that woman's. It was Shaira. "Joseph," she muttered, trying to comfort and revive you and bring you back to consciousness. She knelt down in front of you, and placed a hand to your forehead, her face showing great concern. "What happened? Are you okay?" You were able to focus enough to see the Drifloon, now back to normal size, floating behind her, looking at you with an equally concerned (and rather guilty) expression. Somewhere beyond her, the Umbreon was laid down, resting. You turned your head slightly towards a weak light source, and could see the silhouette of the boarded-up door, except now it wasn't boarded up; someone or something had obviously broken the rest of the planks in order to try and get some light in the room. Turning your head to the other side, you could see the small, stout form of Psyduck, stood quietly in the opposite doorway. His sides visibly lifted as he breathed heavily, his head down, his narrowed eyes calmly watching you. All of the other pokémon, the five abused ones and the Drowzee, had disappeared.

"She got out," Shaira explained, since you were still unable to sort out your throbbing head enough to speak. She looked as though she wanted to help your pain, but had no idea how. She didn't know how to fix human victims of pokémon attacks. You could feel the buzz fading, though, and soon would be in complete control of yourself.

"I need to go after her," she continued softly, trying not to worsen your slowly ebbing headache. "But the Psyduck won't let me... the Psyduck..." Something in her suddenly sad voice hinted at more than she was saying. "He won't listen to me anymore, and I..." The Drifloon made a small crooning noise, and landed on Shaira's shoulder in order to comfort her. She smiled slightly, but then looked back at you. "I can't ask more of you than you've already done, especially considering..." she looked you up and down, and clearly meant the ordeal you had just been put through. "I won't ask more, but take this as thanks. She left it behind. I will leave Drifloon here to look over you, as well. He... he likes you." It was as if she was talking, talking, talking to stall time, to put something off. Her voice was distracted, and she put something - a small disk - into your hand, closing your fingers over it as if she forgot that you were able to do it yourself. Unable to find anything more to say, she gently kissed your forehead and then stood, walking quietly towards the Psyduck who stood and watched her come. The Drifloon relocated to your shoulder, but turned to anxiously watched what was happening.

There was a small period of time where Shaira and Psyduck stood, watching each other, in a clear standoff. You couldn't see the girl's expression, but you could see Psyduck. He was staring up at her though his head was down, and his eyes were full of darkness and dislike. There was clearly a history between these two pokémon. Shaira broke the silence by saying something, too soft to hear, and the Psyduck didn't respond. She said it again, and then edged forwards bravely. The Psyduck twitched, and she stopped dead, rightfully afraid of the consequences. But when she spoke a third time, a gentle plea, something changed in the Psyduck's expression, and Shaira took her only chance. Stepping past the duck, she was gone, the revitalised Umbreon close behind her. The sounds of battle had died down from outside, so you were unable to tell what was going on. Was it too late?

Should you wish to follow her, you're going to have to find a way past that Psyduck yourself, since now his gaze was levelled on to you. He was obviously put there as a rearguard by the woman - but he had let Shaira through, so perhaps you could as well? Alternatively, you could just leave, since you had no obligation to help Shaira. The Drifloon could cover your retreat just as Psyduck was covering the woman's. Though, last you knew, your Ledyba and the Volbeat were beyond that door, the door guarded by Psyduck.

He didn't notice drifloon scoring a couple solid hits on the drowzee before succumbing to hypnosis. He didn't notice kirlia finally falling to an exhausted umbreon. He only barely registered the sounds of the fight outside, including a couple of cries he'd wanted to hear.

He did notice the feeling of his fist connecting with his foe's jaw, and the look of hatred on her face. He definitely registered the abrupt loss of light when the psyduck's flash came to an end, and he will never in his life forget the feeling of the subsequent assault on his mind. The floating was mostly just an odd annoyance, but the attack itself, the burning, forceful entry into his mind, felt...much, much worse. He had to force himself to endure the attack, both during it and after it had been halted by some outside force. After all, didn't pokemon take such attacks all the time? He couldn't just fall to something like this, a fraction of the attack's true potential. He'd get over it, he'd recover, just like any other bad experience.

Then, he was back on the ground, unaware of his surroundings. He recoiled in instinct when he felt a touch on his shoulder, but Shaira's voice and his own eyes got his mind caught up on what had happened during it's brief absence.

The door...open...pokemon...gone...that woman...Shaira...?

"She got out..." As the ringing in his ears and the throbbing pain in his head finally began to subside, Shaira's voice became clearer, though it seemed to Joseph that the girl was troubled.

"I need to go after her, but the psyduck won't let me... the psyduck..." Hnn...she has...a history with it, then? "He won't listen to me anymore, and I..." She paused, and her drifloon tried to comfort her, knowing what she was going through far better than Joseph. "I can't ask more of you than you've already done, especially considering..." She was obviously referring to the damage he'd oh-so-recently sustained, but Joseph didn't consider himself down for the count quite yet.

"I won't ask more, but take this as thanks. She left it behind. I will leave Drifloon here to look over you, as well. He... he likes you." She then placed a small disc, no doubt a technical machine, into the budding gym leader's hands, closing his fingers around it herself. She kissed his forehead, and as she turned to face the pokemon that she apparently had some history with and leaving drifloon behind as she had said she would, Joseph couldn't help but blush a little.

He couldn't hear what she was saying to the psyduck, his mind was...distracted, among other things. But he was recovering, and wanting to get back into action, to finally shake off the effects of that psychic attack. He could remember that he needed to get through the door behind psyduck, to meet up with the ledyba and volbeat he had been chasing. They had been fighting earlier, but now...he needed to know what had become of them.

Shaira finally got past the guard, her umbreon in tow, and then it was Joseph's turn. He remained on his knees, a few more seconds of rest as he checked, and then stored, the TM he had been given. Return, eh? That'll be good later on, but it's not something I'm quite ready to make use of.

Then, he made his move. Swiftly, he shifted his legs into a crossed position, so that he could sit more comfortably. He took a deep breath, ignoring whatever might be in the air, and followed with an equally great (and rather showy, he thought) exhalation from his nose. Bolstering his confidence, he spoke loudly and clearly, eyes locked onto his target.

"Oi, psyduck!" He grinned, and his eyes were strong, but not filled with any hate for the pokemon. "Well, I can't really condone your actions, even if you were acting under orders, but you've definitely impressed me with your strength. Even with this guy's help," he gestured to the drifloon on his shoulder with his thumb, "I don't think we could beat you in a proper fight. And I guess you must be tired, after sustaining that flash for so long even though abuse, and such...so, I don't see much point in fighting. I don't know what Miss Shaira said to you, nor do I know your history with her or that other woman, or your reasons for working with the latter..." He briefly closed his eyes, and stood up straight before resuming his gaze at the water-type. "All I know is that through the door behind you there is someone that I absolutely must meet, someone whom...I feel a great need to speak with. I don't really know what they think about me, but as her trainer it is my responsibility to meet up with that pokemon. So please, let me through!" Joseph stood his ground as he spoke from the heart, waiting for the psyduck's decision.

(Summary/Important Info: Joseph basically asks the psyduck to let him pass.)

I'm wrecking this place up like a tornado of vengeance! Sideways is the best ways! Look out, Aro. You're about to be diago-NAILED!
The Drifloon hovered just behind your shoulder as you chose to confront Psyduck, hesitant but keen to defend you if it needed to. Your seemingly confident attitude definitely caught the duck's attention, and his eyes narrowed as you called out to him. His expression darkened as you spoke, though he was otherwise unreadable; you just had to plunge in and go for it, which you definitely did. There was the occasional moment when something you said (particularly the moments when you mentioned Shaira or his current owner) caused a spark in his eyes, a potentially dangerous spark. For some time after you had finished, the Psyduck made no apparent attempt to respond. In fact, he waited so long that the Drifloon became impatient before you did; muttering irritably, he floated beyond you and, hovering as close to the Psyduck as he dared, began to try and talk with it. The Drifloon spoke softly and without malice, but definitely with urgency; he wanted to help find your friends, and he wanted to know what had happened to Shaira. The Psyduck ignored him more than he had ignored you. Irritated, the Drifloon made a movement as if to strike the Psyduck. The sentry reacted immediately. His eyes glowing a violent pink, the Drifloon was assaulted with Psychic just as you had been, and the balloon cried out in surprise and great pain. You had barely had a chance to react, though, before the Psyduck stopped, and the psychic power receded. Your attention was drawn to the reason behind this; returning from the outside were two birds, a Starly and Taillow. They landed next to Psyduck and, rather than attack it, began to chirp away in his ears; it distracted him from attacking Drifloon, and a rather different expression came over his face. The Drifloon, hurt, floated weakly back to you, knowing that his contribution hadn't helped any. The Starly and Taillow barely acknowledged you as they spoke quietly and quickly to the Psyduck, and you soon realised that they were soothing him. They seemed to know exactly what to say, and when they were done (for they seemed to be in quite a hurry), they both cast you a somewhat appreciative look before returning to the outside. As they left the doorway, you could see the very air shimmer, as if there were yet more supernatural things going on than you realised. You also could see, now, that the door seemed to open directly onto the alleyway, for the dull stone wall opposite was facing you; had it been like that before? This whole room was an oddity. The sound of the birds disappeared the moment they were out of sight, but it wasn't due to their swiftness; it was an unnatural quiet, as if you truly couldn't hear anything outside... at all. This raised numerous questions, but your memory would likely serve you well, and you would realise that this wasn't the first time for this to happen to someone today.

The Psyduck's manner shifted slightly from hostile and cold to simply unsure. He appraised you anew, as if the two birds had managed to make some very good points, and hopefully to your benefit. A flicker of vulnerability came over him, and then he closed his eyes and placed his heads squarely in his hands.

Behind his closed lids, you could see his eyes - and soon afterwards, his whole squat body - begin to glow with a more subtle psychic energy. The Drifloon immediately tensed, fearing the worst, but what invaded your head was very far from pain. It seemed more like a plea. It was clear that the Psyduck's abilities had been pushed far beyond its time, and this simple pokémon was far more powerful than you could have anticipated. He was already able to tap into the psychic energy which, in all honesty, was reserved for his evolution. What had that woman done, exactly? Extreme concentration and effort was plain in the duck's entire being as he tried to communicate with you. It was a very sub-standard form of telepathy, unsurprising due to the Psyduck's lack of natural psychic power, but it just about worked. Rather than 'speaking', the Psyduck offered you feelings; his pain, his confusion, his reluctant and shameful need for help. Embarrassment was another feature which quickly became apparent in his face, but it seemed his decision was made; he was a turncoat and was offering himself to your mercy and compassion. There was the hint of a deep apology, too, for what he had been forced to commit upon you, but he was still bound by a pokémon's obligation and he could not go back on everything. He was still her pokémon. Unbeknownst to you, he was simply finding loopholes in the commands he was given, and he was doing that well.

The image of an ultraball floated in the fore of your mind, put there by the Psyduck. He continued to try and talk with you, but it was difficult and he sorely lacked experience in it. It was like giving a child complex machinery; the results were far from ideal, and potentially hazardous. You slowly understood, though, that this ball was his own. The vague, simplistic picture of a body of water soon replaced the ultraball once he knew you had understood. You then watched as the ultraball appeared on the scene, and it opened, revealing empty contents. It floated there, empty, before the entire image disappeared and you could feel the Psyduck retreating from your mind. Focusing back on the material present, your eyes flicked to the duck as it slumped over, exhausted and pained from the supreme effort.

The air in the doorway shimmered again, and you could almost feel like you were being called. This force was utterly unconnected to Psyduck, though; it looked as though he wouldn't be able to be a danger to anyone from now. The silence from outside lifted; the sound of muffled voices, the cries of battle and conflict, filtered towards you. As if unable to resist the summoning, you stepped past the Psyduck to peer out of the doorway, and the entire scene changed.

The henious woman, stood several yards down the alley from you, had her back to you. In front of her was a quintet of Ralts, all working together in perfect unison. The woman was laughing as they struck out with their powers, but you could not easily see past them to see what she was fighting. A bird swooped up and attempted to land an attack on one of the Ralts, and you recognised it at the Taillow, but you did not see the result of the attack. Beyond them, then, you could see furiously buzzing wings, and a duel call of 'Volbeat!' and 'Ledyba!' let you know that the two pokémon you had chased here were still very much in action. Another call you recognised: "'Breon!" You could not see if Shaira was nearby, but the presence of an Umbreon suggested so. There were other actions and calls which implied that there were other pokémon fighting other than those you had seen, all of which kept this woman and her five Ralts busy.

Your eyes drifted downwards. Just behind her feet was that large, almost-empty bag, the bag she had been so desperate to take with her. It had fallen open slightly, and this was very important for you. Not because you could see the light gleaming off several coloured disk-shapes, or where she kept her cash, or her potions and other trainerly items. Tucked into one of the inner pockets was a series of pokéballs.

Only one was an ultraball.

There was gentle laughter somewhere close to your ear, and as you turned your head, you could see the air distort again slightly as something nearby disappeared from the visual realm. By your feet, the Psyduck groaned lightly, suffering from the mother of all Psyduck headaches. The Drifloon was, as ever, by your shoulder, ready to do whatever you commanded, ready to help you in any choice you now have to make.

Despite his plea, it looked like the psyduck wasn't going to let Joseph past. Nevertheless, the young man stood his ground, waiting for something to happen...the drifloon by his side attempted to help him, but unfortunately the balloon pokemon's impatience ended up backfiring rather badly. Having seen the initial attack, Joseph was about step in, but to his relief his adversary was interrupted by a pair of unlikely visitors.

Those two...are the starly and taillow from before? They're still around? Well, I'll add that to the list of questions I have...

As the pair of birds finished their plea and left, something truly strange happened. Something...something else is definitely here. I wasn't sure earlier, but the shimmering air, and the unnatural quiet...something has been here since the beginning, and I think it's been helping me. But what is it? A ghost? Something psychic? Or...something else entirely? This place...is getting stranger by the second. Well, at least the psyduck looks to be reconsidering the situation, and...oh.

It was at this point that the duck pokemon, displaying prowess far beyond what Joseph had estimated, began sending images to the young man's mind in an attempt to communicate. You're...sorry, you were doing what you had to do, and now...you want my help? That ultraball...is yours? The water, and the empty ball...that means?

The psyduck retreated from his mind, no longer able to cause any harm. But Joseph, as soon as he came back to his proper senses (and seeing the air shimmer once more), was somewhat..overcome by something else, some other need that he found in himself, as if something was beckoning to him. Without thinking, he stepped past his former adversary and peered into the alley beyond him.

It was a scene he wasn't truly surprised to see, though it did make him question how long he had been under the influence of the attacking psychic from earlier...the vile woman was still close by, fighting a group of pokemon with her five ralts. Though Joseph couldn't see any trainers besides the woman, he noted that several familiar pokemon seemed to be present: the taillow from earlier, ledyba and volbeat, and even Shaira's umbreon.

At the woman's feet was her bag, and in her bag was something that caught Joseph's eye immediately: a single ultraball, without a doubt the one connected to psyduck. For a brief moment he could hear the sound of faint laughter by his ear, but all that was there when he looked was that enigmatic shimmer. With drifloon at his side, and the psyduck behind him in the room. Joseph knew it was time to act.

Quickly, while the woman was being distracted, he softly spoke to the ghost he had been loaned. "Listen. I know you've been trying to protect me up until this point, but right now I need you to do something else. See that bag on the ground?" He gestured to the woman's bag. "Inside it, there's an ultraball. It looks like a pokeball, but the top is yellow and black instead of red. When I give the signal, I want you to shrink yourself with minimize, and take that ultraball out of the bag and bring it back to me as quickly as you can, understand? And if she happens to notice you, don't worry and still go for that ultraball at all costs. I'll definitely defend you." He smirked as he said that last bit, fingering the ball containing Sherry, and allowed drifloon to see that he still had a pokemon with him.

With the ghost watching on, Joseph crouched down and released his numel. Sherry attempted to call out, happy to see her trainer again, but was immediately shushed. "Be quiet, Sherry. I need you to pay attention, okay?" Joseph said in a gentle and soothing voice while Sherry looked around, at the alley, the room, the psyduck, and at the floating drifloon. "See that woman over there?" He pointed over to his foe, prompting another confused around from his partner. "She's really mean, and hurt some of my friends, so we're going to battle her, okay? Now, this guy here," he pointed to drifloon with his thumb, "is going to help us out by trying to grab something from her that I kinda need. Our job is to make sure he doesn't get hurt in the process, okay? So if any of that woman's pokemon try to hurt drifloon, I want you to use your best ember on that pokemon. Got it?"

Sherry hesitated, trying to take everything in, and ended up just deciding to figure it out later, and trust her trainer for now. She nodded, and Joseph smiled, still holding his crouch in the door way, both pokemon to his left. His eyes fixed on the woman and her group of ralts, he gave the signal. "Okay! Ready! Set! And...go!"

(Summary/Important Info: Big post, not too happy with the ending...but basically, have drifloon attamept to steal the ultraball, while Sherry provides cover.)

Now comprehending the gravity of the situation, Sherry fell suitably quiet and serious. She still wasn't sure what was going on, considering she had been relaxing in her pokéball this whole time, but you were being serious and that warranted her mirroring it. The Drifloon, who hadn't experienced the same images as you, was a little perplexed by the task but no less eager to fulfill it. He quickly Minimised, becoming a fraction of the size he originally was, and waited for Sherry's signal that she was ready. The little Numel was staring at the woman and Ralts she was supposed to be approaching, and despite everything, she was a little afraid. She could see that there was a large battle going on, and was somewhat intimidated. In an attempt to conceal this from you, though, she gave a definitive nod and began to tread softly down the alleyway. The tiny Drifloon floated along just above her head, cautious but focused. He knew what he had to do. It seemed like a snail's pace at which they moved, particularly in comparison to the heat of the nearby battle. Fortunately, the fight was taking all of the woman's concentration, and indeed she did not notice at all as the tiny Drifloon hesitantly reached the open bag. Sherry stood just before it, silently urging him on as the ghost carefully wrapped his long arm-like strings around the ball. The ultraball was lifted away with a little effort, since the Drifloon lacked the usual strength of his full size. The empty ultraball was not too heavy for him, though he moved very slowly and carefully as he lifted it out of the bag and back towards you.

Sherry had decided that it would be much quicker for her to carry it, and had opened her mouth to encourage the Drifloon to give it to her. She had made no sound, so it was through no real fault of her own that the sneaking pair were noticed. It was not by the woman, however; the eyes of the nearest Ralts flashed as she realised what was going on, and there was only a millisecond of grace before the tiny Drifloon cried out in pain, losing his grip on the ultraball. So as to prevent its harm, Sherry quickly snatched it from the air as it dropped. The Drifloon fell to the ground as he was wrecked by Confusion, and Sherry found herself in a dilemma; in order to fire Ember, she had to put down the ultraball.

However, all this had understandably caught the attention of the woman, who absorbed the situation in a flash. Sherry didn't know what was going on, but she knew she was stealing from this woman; putting the ultraball down meant that she could easily retrieve it and that probably meant you would never see it again. You would never get another chance as good as the one right now.

As before, a lot of things happened in a very short space of time.

Having decided that the top priority was getting the pokéball back to you. Sherry had forgone the use of Ember and had turned around, ready to flee towards you, ultraball safely in her mouth. Unfortunately, Numel are not famous for speed, and the sight of her back made for an easy target. The woman had directed two of her Ralts away from the battle in order to deal with this new threat, and in so doing had caught sight of you. Recognising you instantly, she gave a great cry of anger before composing herself; a nasty, wicked grin slowly crept back onto her taut features as her lips moved, giving quiet commands to the five Ralts around her. You could not see what she was saying. One of the Ralts, assigned to the return of Sherry, sent a wave of psychic energy towards her. In a reversal of duties, the Drifloon, who had just recovered the initial attack, leapt in front of the attack, inflating himself to normal size to ensure that it could not miss him. Sherry was saved, but the assault was not over; the second Ralts, on command, promptly vanished. In a flash of light, he reappeared... right in front of Sherry, who cried out in horrified surprise as she ran into him. Both pokémon recovered quickly, but the Ralts quicker; he sneered nastily down at Sherry, and quickly snapped up the ultraball which she had dropped.

Once she was over the surprise, she gave an angry cry, and prepared an Ember, but the woman was to give her final command.

In an instant, five Ralts became ten. The pokémons' close study of psychic power had altered the effect with which Double Team had on them; rather than flashing about in random locations, creating the illusion of many through speed, these Ralts simply created a duplicate image. Each Ralts shimmered as the illusion parted from them, each one an identical copy of the original Ralts. These clones were nothing but light, an illusion, but it had the same effect; it was now impossible to tell which were the real Ralts. Sherry paused just before firing Ember, now unsure which Ralts to aim at; two powerful-looking ones, the largest Ralts of the group, were stood imposingly in front of her. An ultraball was held in each one's hand; one real, one an illusion, just like the Ralts which gripped it.

Some words registered in your mind, bitter and nasty and entirely malevolent: "Now, I'll deal with you properly."

You had enough time to see one of the Ralts near to the woman, as her eyes flashed with that unmistakable attack. Psychic power threatened to once more invade and ruin your mind, but then, there was nothing - you could still see the group, and you could almost feel as the attack was brushed away from your mind, harmless.

The reason soon became apparent; something brushed by your leg, and you instinctively looked down to see Psyduck. He was looking in no better condition than earlier, but that familiar cold determination was back, and he had saved you using Protect. The shield did not protect him, for he had projected it about you, and he now waddled forwards and away from you now that you were protected. Giving a low, hate-filled cry, a considerable stream of ice energy blasted from his open beak, and the Ice Beam travelled straight through the fake Ralts in front of Sherry, causing the illusion to fail and that Ralts to disappear. The real Ralts hissed as he realised he now had a fight on two sides, and turned to face this new adversary. Sherry took this opportunity to unload a charged Ember into his back, which signalled the resuming of the heated battle ahead. Even though the Double Team nearest you had been removed, there were still 'eight' Ralts fighting for that woman. Your allies on that side had no better a situation, except, of course, for the fact that your arrival had brought three new pokémon to the battle.

Joseph bit the inside of his lip, he hadn't been this nervous in a long time. It was understandable, as he was worried about how Sherry would do in her first battle, and debated whether or not he had made the correct call. He watched as she followed after drifloon, which wasn't quite what he'd wanted her to do, but it was his fault for not making her orders more clear.

Regardless, Joseph couldn't really talk to her without giving all of them away...which proved to be a rather moot point, as despite their attempts at stealth they were noticed by one of the ralts. Drifloon got hit with what looked like confusion, and Sherry ended up getting the ball passed to her, making her unable to defend herself with ember until she passed it on herself. Then, as a result of ralts noticing, the woman noticed as well, and was obviously displeased when she realized that Joseph was interfering with whatever she was doing once again.

In a series of flashes, Sherry found herself barely avoiding getting hit by a psychic blast thanks to the timely intervention of drifloon, and then losing the ultra ball to a second ralts. Another flash, and the whole lot of diminutive psychics used what appeared to be a slight variant of double team. Joseph could see Sherry hesitate, unsure of which ball-carrying ralts was the real one.

Now, I'll deal with you properly.

Those hate-filled words briefly entered his mind, a direct message from the woman no doubt, and Joseph could begin to feel the unfortunately-familiar tingle of psychic energy begin to enter his mind...before it abruptly fizzled out. Absentmindedly adjusting his glasses with a finger, he looked down and saw the psyduck. Did he use protect to save me? A subsequent ice beam on one of the stronger ralts seemed to confirm this observation, and Sherry followed through with an ember on the real one, whom had been revealed when ice beam hit the clone. The numel was now racing back to Joseph's side, and the aspiring Gym Leader decided it was time for the next round to begin.

"Thanks. Let's both do our best." He said softly, glancing down at psyduck before returning his attention to his own pokemon. "Sherry, stop!" He called to the numel first, and she stopped where she was, giving her trainer a look filled with nervousness and confusion and trust. "Turn around and use ember three times, and focus on hitting as many ralts as you can!"

"Nu..." Sherry was still uncertain, but nodded in consent nonetheless.

"Drifloon! Use astonish times three on any ralts left standing after those embers!"

Those double team clones should get dispelled after getting hit by one attack, and anything that doesn't should be real, so after Sherry attacks there should be at least three definite ralts for drifloon to attack.

(Summary/Important Info: Sherry is to use three embers to hit as many of the ralts as possible, thus helping to distinguish real from clone. Drifloon is to follow up with three astonishes to any ralts that is left standing after the embers.)

Though nervous, Sherry did as she was told. The Ralts with the ultraball turned to face your 'team', menacing and confident in his abilities. He seemed to believe that, despite the powerful Psyduck on your team, he could handle you all by himself as his compatriots dealt with the scum on the other side. As Sherry prepared her Embers, the Numel making sure to concentrate on each one and not get flustered, he quickly Traced a random ability. He happened to get Sherry's Simple.

This wasn't necessarily a good thing, but his application wasn't disastrous for you. He Growled at Sherry just before she launched her first Ember, which, thanks to the fact that she had Simple, effectively lowered her Attack stat by four. This did nothing to effect her Embers, for they were Special, all three of which soared towards the gang of eight Ralts near to the woman. The tiny balls of fire spread out as they flew, and, coupled with simultaneous attacks from your allies on the other side, managed to obliterate two more Ralts-illusions. The remaining fiery balls thudded into real Ralts, hurting them, and even burning one. The efforts from your allies managed to destroy a third illusion, leaving only one fake on the battlefield. The Ralts with the ultraball, seeing your strategy, hissed at you, and began to glow with predictable psychic energy; he shot a Confusion at your Numel just as Drifloon saw his chance, and suddenly struck at the Ralts with an Astonish. It wasn't quick enough to stop Sherry from being hit with the mental pain, but at least it was not prolonged, for Drifloon had managed to distract the enemy. The ghost disappeared again, dashing off to Astonish some more Ralts, managing to score two solid hits on solid Ralts before retreating back in earshot of you and your commands. He emerged unscathed.

Psyduck looked to be charging another move, but then doubled over. For a moment, it was unclear whether or not he was hit by something, but then it was apparent that he was just severely distracted by a debilitating headache. He muttered his name, which sounded like an apology, but he couldn't bring himself to attack this turn. Though he was powerful, and definitely on your side, it looked as if he was going to be unpredictable help. In payment for his lack of action, he was struck by a wayward Confusion, flung by one of the weaker Ralts.

Though the other side was still largely obscured, you could hear a loud, sad cry, and a Starly crashed into the ground amidst the Ralts. She stayed there, knocked out after a hard battle. Meanwhile, every Ralts was still standing, though they were definitely being run down. The woman remained; despite your timely intervention, she seemed convinced that she would emerge victorious. She had gotten over the traitorous Psyduck after staring daggers at the bird for several moments, and had reluctantly given him up as a bad case.

Joseph surveyed the situation as his pokemon began to act, trying to stay one step ahead of his opponents in a type of battle he had never experienced before. If it was just a one-on-one, his strategy would be easier to figure out, but at the moment he had to figure out orders for two pokemon fighting against five along side multiple allies.

The ralts who held the ultraball seemed to want to take on Joseph's team alone, but that wasn't something the trainer really wanted to try. Though he could only estimate each ralts' strength (as he really didn't have the time to try and use his poketech to examine each opponent), he realized that he couldn't afford to attack the ball-holder just yet. He guessed that it was probably the strongest of the five, and as such the mostly likely to know how to use 'teleport'. Joseph feared that if he were to concentrate his efforts on that one pokemon, it would simply teleport away from danger, and the ultraball he needed might be lost.

Thus, for the time being, he was going to aide his allies with the bulk of the ralts. Once those weaker psychics were out, more pokemon could help take out the strongest ralts before it could get away -- especially Shaira's umbreon. But before that phase of his plan could occur, he needed to clear out the other four ralts (and one clone). Sherry and drifloon's round of attacks had been quite successful, and even though the former had been effected by growl he had no intention of using anything but ember for the time being.

The psyduck beside him looked like it was going to attack, but a sudden headache nipped that in the bud. Elsewhere, a Starly (possibly the same one from the room) fell to the ground, defeated. Damn...too bad I don't have any ethers for psyduck, he looks exhausted. Well, it can't be helped...I'll try and finish this quickly so him and the others don't exhaust themselves any further.

The path forward was clear. Time for the next round. "Keep it up, drifloon! Use another couple astonishes on whichever ralts is closest! Sherry, another couple embers into the group of ralts!"

(Summary/Important Info: Drifloon is to use two astonishes on whichever ralts is closest to it, and Sherry is to use two more embers, once again aiming at the group of ralts rather than the one holding the ultraball.)
