You strolled into Millenia and looked around. The entire town wasn't that big to begin with. But it would be a nice, quiet place to start with your Numel, that little cutie. Right now, the little camel was aimlessly wandering about beside you, lowing softly. His attention was on the sky though. For all you knew, there was a storm a coming and you should get inside somewhere safe.

Then what the Numel had been watching came into sight. The large carapace fluttered into view before it landed on the ground. The red and black bug scuttled about before finding a nice patch of warm grass to sun itself. The back part opened and the wings came out as it lied in bliss. Well, Numel could go out and pick a fight with a defensiveless bug. Or you could wander about town, maybe check out the Meteor Field if you're interested.

(You know you've been gone a long time when the staff member that created your profile and journey is now retired...)

Joseph sighed happily, walking off the boat and back on to dry land for the first time in what seemed like an eternity. The boat ride from Olivine back in Johto had been fairly eventful, marked by the hatching of the egg that his friend had given him to start his journey. Much to the dismay of Joseph, who had been hoping for a bird pokemon to further him along his path to becoming a flying-type Gym Leader, what hatched from the egg was a numel, decidedly not a bird.

His disappoint was fortunately short-lived as he watched the little camel, whom he had nicknamed 'Sherry' on a whim, begin its own journey through life. As Joseph attempted to get to know the infant, he soon realized that while her body moved slowly, her mind apparently did not. It was difficult to figure out what she was thinking, though, as she often would seem entranced by some mundane curio for hours, then abruptly lose interest and let her mind and body wander off. In that respect, Joseph supposed that his new friend was much like himself. Perhaps that was what Kid meant when he said the pokemon would suit him? Regardless, as the young man felt the air of a new place, smelling of a strange mix of the familiar and the foreign, Joseph forced his reminiscing to come to an end -- after all, he had things he wanted to do!

Sherry also had things she wanted to do. In this case, it was to stare mysteriously at the sky. Nothing better to do at the moment, Joseph decided to try to discern was the little camel was gazing at. It didn't seem like it was going to rain, but weather is always difficult to predict in a place one has never been, so Joseph did not rule out that possibility. Just as he was about to turn his gaze back towards the town, he made out was his friend had been watching so intently.

Joseph was not particularly astounded. A ledyba... he thought, watching the flying bug come to a rest on a patch of grass nearby. Just a ledyba. A defenseless little beetle, sitting exposed in the middle of a town, as if inviting any nearby trainer to catch it. Or maybe it has no clue where it is, and just landed out of exhaustion. Well, whatever. I don't really want to catch it, and I don't really want to risk Sherry getting confused by a potential supersonic in her first real battle. He mulled over his thoughts a bit more, and decided he might as well make use of his poketech.

"Ledyba," the device droned, "the 'Five Star' pokemon. It is so timid, it can't move if it isn't with a swarm of others. It conveys its feelings with scent."

Can't move if it's alone? Joseph chuckled to himself. I guess this Ledyba doesn't have a problem with being alone. That small bit of info logged into his poketech, he decided to check out the town a bit, maybe see what sort of shops were around. He had money that was just about burning a hole in his pocket.

Speaking of which, Joseph remembered something he had read about on the boat, a weekly lottery open to all trainers in Alternia. Deciding he might as well take the risk, he bought his tickets via his poketech.
-27, 20, 2, 12, 14
-8, 5, 27, 18, 16
-23, 11, 20, 16, 3
-30, 17, 12, 27, 9
-13, 28, 21, 14, 5

"Oi, Sherry! Let's get going!" His purchase finished, Joseph softly called to the numel, successfully attracting the young pokemon's attention. A few seconds later, the little camel was plodding after her trainer and father-figure, stubby legs moving to catch up.

(Summary/Important Info: Ignored ledyba, decided to basically wander around town.)

So you had decided to leave this Ledyba alone and continue searching for something better to do. You wondered further into town passing 'Everyday Evolution' but you didn't have enough money to spend in there yet anyway so you decided to pass right by it. You could see the gym far away in the distance, but with only your Numel, you were at both a type and level disadvantage so you gave that a miss as well.

The only other options that were left to you were the battle camp, or the Pokemart. But if you went to the battle camp you would have to enter at Novice as you did not have three Pokemon of your own...yet. So what was it to be? Just as you were about to make up your mind, you heard a sound behind you, almost like a sound of fluttering wings. 'Baaaa?'

You turned around and saw the same Ledyba was hovering behind you. It looked at you with it's wide eyes. Ledyba didn't travel in swarms, but that didn't mean that they didn't get lonely. This Ledyba hadn't seen anyone for so long, and she just wanted to find some friends. Your poketch bleeped to let you know your lottery numbers had been received. But what would you do with this willing Ledyba?

While strolling through Millenia, Joseph made a mental note of any interesting landmarks he saw. 'Everyday Evolution' sounds like a go if I ever get my hands on something with an item-based evolution...and a gym, wow does that bring back some memories. Once I've gotten a stronger team I'll have to remember to come back here to make a challenge. Good ol' reliable PokeMart, I should probably get a few supplies before I head out. And that 'Battle Camp' thing...I guess it's like the Battle Tower back in Olivine. I'll have to make a challenge there too. But not now...

Sherry, meanwhile, was lost in the mysterious depths of her mind as usual. Her gaze wandered from one place to the next, occasionally pausing to remember to follow her trainer. She was the first to notice that the ledyba from earlier had followed. It didn't really cross her mind to tell Joseph about it; she was more than content to just watch its shadow as the bug approached.

"Baa?"

"Eh?" Joseph said, not yet expecting to have his mind brought off his train of deep thought. "What's this now?" He said as he turned around to confront the source of the disturbance. Huh. Is it that same ledyba from before? It doesn't look agressive...I guess it just wants a friend? I can't really say no...

Joseph stared at the bug hovering in front of him for a moment or two, before reaching into his bag and withdrawing a pokeball. "Ah, er, well, if you want to come with me, then, uh, just press the button?" He really didn't know how to about doing something like this. He had caught Ace via a regular battle (using a friend's pokemon, of course), and Sherry was given to him as an egg. He just didn't have experience asking a pokemon to come with him.

He wasn't too sure about doing it, but he wasn't just going to deny the ledyba a friend. If it didn't work out , he could always just release it. And regardless of whether or not the ledyba decided to come with him, he was going to stop by the pokemart as soon as possible.

As he waited for the ledyba to respond, he noticed that his lottery tickets had been accepted...and he hadn't won anything. Well, there goes a hundred bucks down the drain...

(Summary/Important Info: Asked ledyba to join me. Regardless of response, going to the pokemart.)

Well, this is as new to me as it is to you. A wild pokemon just asking to be caught, just like that? I never thought that that happened. But then again, I didn't think that Ledyba bleated like Mareep either.

Back to the point. You hold out your pokeball, telling the lonely little bug that it can capture itself if it wants. The Ledyba buzzes around for a bit, seeming unsure how to react to this choice. "Ba?" it chirps as it circles around the pokeball inquisitively. Perhaps it didn't want to be caught after all. If it did, it would have pressed the button by now. Or had it never seen a pokeball before?

Sherry began to get slightly impatient, but then the Ledyba finally made a move. It moved closer to the pokeball as if to get a closer look, but then there was a soft breeze that bumped the bug against the button. "Ba!!???" The Ledyba cried out in surprise as it was engulfed by red light, and the pokeball began to rock violently in your hand. Just as it seemed the bug would escape, the movement ceased suddenly. The bug was yours!

Now that that was over with, you headed towards the PokeMart. It was a relatively small store, and there was rather little variety on aisles inside. A teenage girl, perhaps a year or two younger than you, was sitting at the counter, currently busy serving a middle-aged guy. Numel began to browse around the store curiously, sniffing at the racks of pokeballs.

"Thank you," you hear the man at the counter say, and he walks out of the PokeMart, shoving you aside on the way. That was rather rude of him, but I suppose there's nothing you can do about it.

Meanwhile, the now free clerk has noticed you and your Numel. "Can I help you?" she calls, wearing a smile. It's not often you bump into a clerk that's as nice as this. Normally they just ignore you until you come to the counter.

So, I suppose you should answer her.

(Huzzah for the lack of apocalypse!)

Maybe this wasn't such a good idea... Joseph thought to himself, watching the ledyba inspect the ball he'd presented. I don't think it knows what a pokeball is... Sherry, who had been paying attention to Joseph and the bug out of respect for the former, got impatient watching the five-star pokemon's apparent indecisiveness. After all, if someone wanted to go with them, they should just do it!

A sudden gust of wind ended up making the ledyba's decision for it. The beetle was knocked into the orb's pressure-sensitive button, activating the capture mechanism and ensnaring the startled insect. To Joseph's surprise, the ledyba didn't put up as much of a fight as he had expected, and the capture was made final by the resounding 'ding' that was characteristic of the device.

"Er, well, I don't know if that was its intent, but, uh, I guess I caught a ledyba?" Joseph looked at his partner sheepishly, the numel returning with a considerably more vacant and bored stare. Hesitantly, the young man placed the shrunken pokeball on his belt for safekeeping. "Ah, I guess you should take a rest, and, uh, get used to your surroundings?" He added quickly, brushing the bug's ball with his fingertips. I'll have to give her a name later... He thought upon confirming his new friend's gender and moves with the poketech.

That out of the way, Joseph and Sherry headed to the pokemart. It was small and had a fairly small selection of items, but that was to be expected for a store in a small town in a region that was settle fairly recently. Nevertheless, a quick perusal while the clerk was with another patron showed that they had what Joseph wanted. By the time Joseph heard the other customer, a middle-aged man, thank the clerk and leave, the budding trainer had already made a decision on what to spend his remaining funds on.

Meanwhile, the middle-aged man had apparently made his own decision: to abandon standard social protocol and bump into an (I assume) easily-avoidable stranger while leaving the shop.

What the hell was that for? Joseph thought rather angrily, having been jarred from his contemplation of future events. He didn't act; he knew far better than to confront random jerks who bumped into him. He contented himself with a brief angry glare to the man's retreating form, before standing up and walking over to the counter, desired items in tow.

He gave one last glance out the door (and at the man, if he was still there), before he heard the young lady at the counter call to him. His gaze snapped to her, and he hustled up to make his purchase. "I'll take these, please." he said, laying down a pokeball, two potions, and an antidote on the counter. "Man, what was that guys problem?" He asked with a somewhat awkward smile on his face, pointing his thumb back to the door to make clear just who he was talking about.

Sherry, meanwhile, had been minding her own business investigating all the funny looking and odd-smelling and mundane things around Joseph. She was quite startled when she realized that her trainer/father-figure had gotten assaulted, and was even more surprised to see him not strike the other human back! As she followed Joseph to the counter, she thought about what odd creatures humans are.

(Summary/Important Info: bought 1x :pokeball , 2x :potion , and 1x :antidote )

I'm wrecking this place up like a tornado of vengeance! Sideways is the best ways! Look out, Aro. You're about to be diago-NAILED!
The girl behind the counter took your items with a smile, counting up the total. She followed your gaze when you jokingly pointed back at the rude man, and shrugged, still smiling. “He’s having some ‘trouble’,” she replied, and giggled, handing your items back to you. “That’ll be $200,” she said, and then leant over the counter towards you, looking back at the door. “I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but this is a ‘mart, not a hospital, right? He’s been trying to catch a Wingull, I think, for three days now, down by the sea… but with no success, apparently.” She giggled again, and you realised that she was actually quite pretty. “He won’t tell me what pokémon he’s got, what he’s trying to fight these Wingull with – ‘cause trust me, nobody has any trouble finding them down there – but I think it’s a fire type or something silly like that. He keeps buying Burn Heal, and I actually think it’s for himself!” The thought of this made her laugh again, and she was about to go on when the door suddenly opened. She silenced herself by swiftly slapping her hand over her mouth, but you could still see her smiling as she turned around to sort some things behind the counter. The arrival was just a tall woman, who moved down to the aisles much like you had, but the girl obviously felt like she had said too much.

Before the door fell closed, you could hear the beginnings of some sort of commotion outside. It had been perfectly quiet and calm when you were there, so what was going on? What could have happened in the last few minutes? Sherry was distracted from her musings on the oddities of humanity, and ambled over to the door, curious too to see what was going on. You could hear raised voices, almost panicked voices, and the distinct sound of a pokémon’s call, but it was too muffled to make out. Sherry wasn’t tall enough to see out of the glass portion of the door, and was about to walk back to you when the door suddenly opened again, and guess who it was; Mr Rude Guy, who was also apparently Mr Incompetent. The force of the door sent the startled Sherry rolling backwards, but just like the guy hadn’t cared about bumping into you, he obviously didn’t care about bumping into your poor Numel. He stood there, in the open doorway, and looked between you and the surprised girl behind the counter. It’s worth mentioning that he didn’t even appear to recognise you. Now that the door was open, you could hear the commotion far easier, and a distinct cry of “Vol!” rang out above all of the human voices.

“Y’gotta see this,” the guy said, caught somewhere between amusement and bemusement, and as you looked at him, you could see that his clothing had a slightly scorched quality. He jabbed his finger back outside, and grinned uneasily before letting the door slam shut behind him again.

Sherry ambled up to you, her head spinning, and angrily muttered under her breath. It wasn’t surprising that she didn’t like that guy, no more than you probably did. But curiosity won out, and you stepped lightly to the door after making sure that Sherry was okay – she was – and opened it to see what was going on outside.

At first, it looked as though there were five or six flying bug pokémon above the assembled crowds, crying out their names, knocking people over and generally causing trouble. Several trainers had brought out their pokémon to try and force the pokémon to calm down by battling, but all attempts were being avoided, and the trouble continued. After a moment, it became apparent that it was only one pokémon, and the illusion was thanks to Double Team, which was being furiously used so that the bug could try to be everywhere at once. It also seemed to be looking above and under bushes, in trees, even under actual people who were just passing by – hence the distressed and surprised voices – and its yells of “Vol!” was no battle cry, but sounded more desperate, as if it was… looking for something. The rude guy from before was standing nearby, and had brought his own pokémon out – a Growlithe, as the clerk had predicted. He was stood, watching, obviously debating if this was worth the effort, and even more obviously amused by the distressed Volbeat.

He’s having some ‘trouble’." The girl began to explain. "That’ll be $200." Joseph quickly handed over the cash for his purchase, while the attendant continued with her explanation. “I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but this is a ‘mart, not a hospital, right? He’s been trying to catch a Wingull, I think, for three days now, down by the sea… but with no success, apparently. He won’t tell me what pokémon he’s got, what he’s trying to fight these Wingull with – ‘cause trust me, nobody has any trouble finding them down there – but I think it’s a fire type or something silly like that. He keeps buying Burn Heal, and I actually think it’s for himself!” She said, with intermittent giggles near the beginning blossoming into full-blown laughter which only ended when a tall woman entered the store.

Joseph listened to the pretty girl's explanation quite intently. Well, if he's just stressed out because he can't catch the pokemon he wants, I guess I can forgive him for bumping into me. Though, really, if he's using a fire-type against a water-type, he really shouldn't be expecting to get very far very fast...especially if he keeps allowing himself to get burned. Hmm...now that I think about it, I can probably save that guy some grief by showing him how to properly fight a flying-type, and maybe catch a wingull for myself in the process.

As Joseph planned out his possible next steps, he didn't catch the sounds of commotion going on outside the shop. However, Sherry did, and made her way over to the door out of curiosity. She was somewhat disappointed to learn that the odd sounds had been coming from outside, where she couldn't see, rather than the door itself as she'd initially suspected. Turning around to resume looking around the store, she was decidedly NOT PLEASED to get sent tumbling ass-over-applecart with a cry of "NUU!"when the man from earlier came rushing through the door.

The sudden commotion inside the store instantly got Joseph's attention, which quickly turned to the commotion outside at the rude/incompetent man's behest. Joseph quickly comforted the, ah, shaken Sherry as the man left the store, and then the pair left the store, the purchased items having been placed in Joseph's bag earlier.

The situation outside...was definitely hectic. At first it seemed as though several trainers and their pokemon were attempting to battle a swarm of bug pokemon, but a better survey of the situation made it obvious that it was just a single volbeat using double team. Absent-mindedly, Joseph looked up the creature's data in his poketech.

"Volbeat, the firefly pokemon. It communicates with other by lighting up its rear at night. It loves illumise's sweet aroma."

Joseph was only halfheartedly paying attention to the droning device, his mind ablaze with thought. Why are those idiots trying to fight it? It's clearly just looking for something...something very important to it. A friend? Family? Trainer? Some object it likes? A favorite food? What is making it so frantic?

"Uggh...it can't be helped, I guess..." Joseph muttered, barely noticing the man from before, a growlithe by his side. The aspiring gym leader looked down through his glasses at the numel beside him, quickly deciding that this situation wasn't suited for her. Instead, he fingered the pokeball containing the pokemon he had 'caught' just minutes before. He had hoped to try and bond with the ledyba, but not like this. But since he didn't really want the volbeat to get needlessly hurt by some overzealous trainer lloking to score a capture or protect his town, he felt like he didn't have much choice in the matter.

"Come out, uh, Ledyba!" His voice faltered a bit, as he felt uncomfortable using his new companion's species name to call on her; a proper nickname would have to come later. The five star pokemon looked about in confusion, before recalling the face of the human she basically just met. Hovering in front of his face, she looked at him quizically. "Uh, hey, hi there. Um, I was wondering if you could help me out a bit? There's a volbeat over there that's trying to find something, and I was wondering if you could maybe calm him down a bit? He's kinda, um, causing a bit of a ruckus."

The bug looked back and forth between her fellow pokemon and the human who had just given her commands. Deciding that, as she had wanted to be his friend, and was apparently stuck with him, she might as well do this little task. Gathering her resolve, she flew closer to the desperately frantic volbeat, doing her best to ignore the other trainers and their pokemon. In her native speech, she attempted to calm the firefly down. "Hiya! Do I know you? Whatcha doin', anyway? Lookin' fer somethin'? Ya know yer causin' a bit of a scene, dontcha? Can I help?"

(Summary/Important Info: ledyba is going to try and calm the volbeat down)

I'm wrecking this place up like a tornado of vengeance! Sideways is the best ways! Look out, Aro. You're about to be diago-NAILED!
The moment your new Ledyba appeared, the Volbeat’s manner changed completely. As you spoke quietly to her, apparently unsure if you even had any authority over her, the Volbeat’s actions had reduced to a violent twitching, staring here and there as if able to sense that something had changed. Or, perhaps, he could sense what he was actually looking for?

If your randomly caught Ledyba was, indeed, the source of any trouble, she was entirely oblivious to it. She took on your request with little complaint, and buzzed up to the Volbeat. The moment the firefly caught sight of your Ledyba, he fixated on her, and let out an anguished cry of “Voooolbeat!” He dove down at her, the searching and desperation forgotten, as she twittered away her greeting. This checked the Volbeat, who hesitated in his advance, and seemed to do a double take; this was the bug he was after, right? Yes, there was no mistaking her, so why didn’t she remember…?

“Oh Twixy,” he groaned, hovering in front of her, taking her little boxing-glove hands in his own, staring at her. “I’m looking for you, you stupid bug! Don’t you remember…? The room, with Biddy, and those Ralts – the Psyduck? That human? Don’t you…? Damn, that Confusion really messed you up...” Words failed him from there, and he glanced down past the Ledyba – who was apparently known as Twixy – right down at you. His face was blank for a moment, and then, even though you hadn’t entirely understood his previous ranting, you understood the look of malice on his face as he realised what had happened.

His body began to glow; he was obviously charging up an attack of some sort, but then Twixy, in a moment of clarity, interrupted him. Her voice grew low, and her manner seemed different to the innocent, confused Ledyba of a few moments ago; perhaps she was remembering something? Either way, as the two bugs’ voices lowered and their conversation became private and frantic, Sherry decided that you needed to be clued in; speaking softly at your ankles, she roughly translated for you, and you understood in the way that only trainers of their own pokémon can. Since the source of the Volbeat’s dilemma was apparently solved, the crowd in front of the pokémart divided roughly into two kinds; those who were no longer interested, and those who were even more curious. The more astute of them looked towards you, for it had been your Ledyba which had stopped its hysteria. Some of them were suspicious of you; had you forcefully separated these two pokémon? Some of them were impressed that you had somehow managed to calm the Volbeat, and didn’t really care how. Some of them did care how.

The Rude Guy wasn’t one of those, but he was amongst those who approached you.

“Nice work,” he grunted, grinning unsurely at you. He looked down at Sherry, who was utterly disgusted by his presence, and that he didn’t feel bad for being so horrible! It did just seem that this guy was simply ignorant rather than malicious. He still didn’t seem to recognise you as the man from the mart. “Cool Numel,” he offered, before getting to the point. “I was thinking of goin’ back to, y’know, do some pokéball tossing if ya know what I mean! You’ve got an – eh – interesting way with the beasts, you could come too.” So he wanted you to join him in hunting Wingull with your Numel? Fortunately, you were interrupted before you could respond; another trainer had approached you, younger and more pleasant-looking than the obnoxious guy with the Growlithe. He smiled at you, and doffed an imaginary hat in greeting. A small Spinarak sat calmly on his shoulder, and a Zubat flapped idly above his head. He was obviously far more pokémon friendly – and savvy – and would probably be nicer to talk to.

“I just wanted to let you know that the ‘beat was making off with your Ledyba,” he said calmly, jerking a finger behind him. The Volbeat had indeed managed to convince Twixy to go with him. You were forgotten, it seemed, as they made their hurried way across the open space, heading for a darker part of town. If the Ledyba's memory had been altered by Confusion, as the Volbeat had implied, then she had definitely remembered everything - and it seemed obvious what was more important to her now. “I think they’re off somewhere important, and maybe even dangerous, from the sounds of it. I expect you’ll want to chase after them; would you mind if I came with you?”

Joseph stood calmly as he watched his recently acquired ledyba attempt to calm the volbeat as he had asked. Almost immediately, however, it was apparent that ledyba was the very reason why the volbeat was in such a distressed state. Even without understanding what they were saying Joseph could pick up the shift in the firefly's demeanor towards malice and anger when they locked eyes.

No sooner had the volbeat began to prepare an attack, likely one to be luanched against Joseph, than did ledyba step in. Despite their brief interaction, Joseph could notice a change in the bug, and the two pokemon's conversation took a different turn. At that point, the bespectacled trainer could feel his comrade's nuzzling attempt to get his attention.

Ignoring the crowd around him, Joseph knelt down and placed his hand on Sherry's head, rubbing it gently. Then, as he had done with Ace in months past, the two communicated as only trainer and trained can. A small part of Joseph was glad that they had already bonded enough to do this, but most of his mind was preoccupied with his friend's translation of what she'd heard.

So, it looks like ledyba has friends after all...I guess this explains why she was all alone before. Well, if she'd rather go with that volbeat than me I'd understand, since I don't want to force anyone to partner with me if they don't want to. He thought, turning his head back to watch the two bugs converse while holding his kneeling position. He ignored, or more properly, didn't hear the rude guy's proposition, his mind was far too busy mulling over what Sherry had told him, figuring out how accurate it was, and trying to decide what he ought to be doing in this situation. He looked back down at Sherry for a split second, asking her for her opinion without speaking. As he had hoped, she confirmed his thoughts (though whether this was just imitating her trainer or an actual independent opinion, Joseph neither knew nor wanted to ask).

He barely noticed an approaching trainer with a spinarak and a zubat. He nodded in return of the stranger's rather odd (though amusing) greeting.

I just wanted to let you know that the ‘beat was making off with your Ledyba.

"Eh?" Joseph's gaze snapped upwards as soon as he registered the comment, desperately needing to verify what the stranger had said.

She's already leaving? His mind was scrambled, racing to re-find his next move. Then, like the beacon of a lighthouse in a storm, words that were said long ago in a voice he hadn't heard in years rang throughout his head. "A pokemon, once captured, regardless of circumstances, becomes the responsibility of the trainer. Even if trainer and pokemon do not get along, it falls to the former to provide and look after the latter as a parent does with their children."

No choice then, do I?

I think they’re off somewhere important, and maybe even dangerous, from the sounds of it. I expect you’ll want to chase after them; would you mind if I came with you?

Joseph looked up at the young man, and blinked. "Yeah, sure. Do whatever you want." He spoke in a hurried fashion, and immediately turned back to his waiting numel. "I don't want you to fall behind and get lost, okay?" The pair smiled at each other briefly before Joseph recalled his partner, and dashed off at full speed in the direction the two bug-types had flown.

(Summary/Important Info: Rude guy ignored, New guy invited to do whatever he wants. Sherry returned, Joseph dashes off at full speed towards bugs. Also, congrats on the greenness!)

I'm wrecking this place up like a tornado of vengeance! Sideways is the best ways! Look out, Aro. You're about to be diago-NAILED!
Your morals had made the decision for you; either way, you were running after those two small bugs, and you had to be fast. There was definitely something hurried about them, something desperate, and Ledyba - or Twixy - was certainly clued-up again. Neither of them noticed as you chased after them, would could have been beneficial to you; it meant that they did not try to lose you, had they wanted to. You were marginally faster, and could hear the frantic buzzing as they continued their conversation.

The trainer you had graciously allowed to follow (even if you didn't really care) had waited a moment before jogging after you. You had only glimpsed it, barely taken notice of it, but he had smiled, just quietly, almost invisibly. It was a knowing smile. It was also somewhat sinister, if you had spent long enough thinking about it. His pokémon were silent and well-behaved, and you almost forgot he was even there as you concentrated on not losing the Volbeat and Ledyba.

The crowd was left far behind as your odd group delved deeper into Millenia, delving into the more grungy, industrial sectors, the local scenery abandoning the lushness that the agricultural and natural areas of the city provided. This was definitely the dirty urban side which is visible in any city... though easier to find in some, like Kijutsu. How far could this pair be needing to go?! Fortunately, you were fairly fit, and because the pokémon were flying above you, they were easy to keep an eye on. The streets you turned into, the roads you crossed, the empty stretches of tarmac'd and concrete land, they were all less and less populated as you went. It was as if this Volbeat was taking the Ledyba to the least visited, most ghostly part of Millenia.

Just when it seemed impossible that you need to go any further, they both paused. To their left was a dark, narrow alleyway. How joyous. They flew in, hesitantly and much lower to the ground, just as you caught up. Was the Ledyba worth this much effort? You stopped to catch your breath just outside the opening to the alleyway, your hands resting on your knees, and you peered down the narrow, dusty way.

The Ledyba and Volbeat had stopped again, but this time it wasn't to make sure they were in the right place. They were hovering side by side, and the Volbeat's tail was beginning to glow - a clear sign that he felt threatened. Twixy was equally as irritated, buzzing quietly. On the ground, directly in front of them, was a calm, collected Glameow. It didn't take a genius to realise that she wasn't allowing them to go any further. The three pokémon exchanged threats, but the Glameow remained very cool about it. She flicked her coiled-up tail, and daintily cleaned her paw, but there was a dangerous glint in her eyes.

Volbeat and Ledyba, having failed with diplomacy, shared a glance. Nodding, they used their airborne advantage to simply and quickly fly over the cat, who lost her cool and hissed angrily at them. She jumped up to scratch them, but missed completely - and yowled a "Glaaaaaameoww!" behind her, just as the two bugs turned the corner and went out of sight. Several other pokémon voices, muffled and aggressive, joined it, and the unmistakable sounds of battle began.

You were recovered, and the Glameow had turned around again to see you. Her ears came back and she hissed at you, too, before calming, and idly cleaning herself. But that didn't mean she wasn't opposing you. She knew you couldn't fly, and if you wanted the same thing as the two bugs who had just gotten past her... well, it wouldn't be so easy.

A door to the left of you, just inside the alleyway and boarded up with planks of wood, caught your attention for a moment. A light somewhere inside the room beyond glowed briefly but intensely. The doorway clearly lacked an actual door, hence the planks of wood nailed across it, which left randomly sized gaps for you to peer into. The wood also looked rotten in places, and you would be able to pull enough planks off to get inside, I think.

So it seems you have a choice. Where would you like to go from here, trainer?

Joseph was completely transfixed on the flying forms of the ledyba and volbeat. The crowd behind him was irrelevant, the odd guy and his poisonous pair following some distance behind were irrelevant, and the depressing change of scenery that heralded the group's arrival in Millenia's industrial district were irrelevant. Even the fact that he had only met, much less captured, that ledyba mere minutes ago was irrelevant to Joseph as he ran.

In the brief moments when Joseph was neither making sure he hadn't lost the flying insects nor avoiding whatever obstacles were in his path, he sifted through what he already knew to figure out what he might expect.

Ledyba was a wild pokemon when we first met...

...volbeat probably is too...

...Sherry...something about a room, a human, and other pokemon...

...a battle, ledyba got confused and wandered off...

That was when the two bugs went down the alley and Joseph stopped to catch his breath. So, maybe it's something like 'our friend was captured by a human, and we have to get him back' then...

He witnessed the brief encounter with the glameow, and took a mental note of how the volbeat's tail glowed. He almost chuckled a bit when he saw how easy the pair had dodged the cat, exactly as they should have. The sounds f battle that began as soon as ledyba and volbeat were out of sight didn't surprise him in the least.

Then, it was his turn. He had two choices: either follow the same route the bugs had taken, or try the mystery door he had discovered to his left. The former would require him to somehow deal with the glameow (whether it was a deliberate guard or just a territorial stray he couldn't tell). He could try battling it, but that would take too much time, possibly call attention to his presence, and risk either Sherry or him getting too hurt to help in a potentially more important battle in the near future. He could also try where ledyba and volbeat had failed: diplomacy. After all, he had something that those two didn't: food. It was an interesting possibility, but the brief flash of light coming from the boarded-up room to his left put the food idea on the back burner.

To Joseph, it seemed highly likely that the light from the room had come from volbeat's tail, and as such would be the room he wanted to get into. What he had in mind would certainly be a flashier entrance, but might provide enough of a distraction to help who he wanted to help, ledyba.

Good thing I'm wearing boots... He thought as he inspected the boards to see which ones were the most rotten, as well as deciding the position he needed to be in. If the alley was wide enough to allow it, he could just kick the boards in. If it wasn't, it should be narrow enough for him to press his back to the opposite side of the alley and use that to just push the boards in with his feet. Either way, his feet would be involved in removing the boards and granting him access to the room.

(Summary/Important Info: Ignoring the glameow for now, going to try and kick the boards in and enter the room.)

The Glameow made no protest when you chose to kick in the door. It was unclear whether she was a guard or an ordinary alleycat, but her jurisdiction obviously didn't cover that eventuality. She kept an eye on you, though, as you decided the best planks to knock down. The alley was wide enough for you to back up a little, get positioned, and deal a hefty kick to the unstable wood. Dust was disturbed and flooded the immediate scene, but you were not perturbed, and it took only three more kicks to clear an area large enough for you to scramble through.

Supposing that the flash of light belonged to the Volbeat was an intelligent one, but as you dropped to your hands and knees to get through the decent gap you had made, it was apparent that you were either wrong, or the bug had moved on already. Despite the power of the flash, it was now completely dark, save for the trickle of diluted sunlight which also made it through the gaps in the doorway. There was so much dust that you couldn't help but cough. Since you hadn't bothered to keep yourself quiet when kicking down the door, I can't imagine that you'd restrain yourself now.

For a moment, as you carefully got to your feet in the near-blackness, there was nothing. Not a sound, not even from the fight you knew had to be going on nearby. It was all surreally silent.

And then a voice, as if muffled by water, reached your ears.

"Baby," it said, and though it was distorted, you could sense a panicked caution; "use Flash again, now."

There was a low groan, likely of pain, and then the room lit up again with the powerful and sudden light. You flinched back, having momentarily adjusted to the darkness, and had to blink back the bright lights which now swam in your immediate vision to try and discern what you were looking at. A woman, tall and bony and unpleasant looking, with her skin stretched tight over her sharp face, was staring at you. At her right foot was a large sack, though its crumpled edges showed that it was nearly empty. At her other foot, his throbbing head in his throbbing hands, was the origin of the light; a Psyduck, unnaturally lit by the power of Flash. His eyes were closed, a light frown on his face as he concentrated, but also as he struggled with the mother of all headaches. The woman, who you supposed was his trainer, blinked at you. Then you noticed something curious; her eyes didn't seem to be looking at you, but rather through you, and they slowly wandered about in your general direction. She did not confront you, or demand to know what you were doing. After a few moments, she stopped looking at you at all, and it was clear that she couldn't see you despite the glare from the struggling Psyduck. A little confused, she turned away, and snapped her fingers at the Psyduck. She had obviously heard you make all that noise; why else would she have lit the place up? Just before she let the Psyduck end Flash, you had a chance to note the rest of your surroundings. The room was small, perhaps six by five metres, with only one other doorway at the end opposite to you. It was dark, dank, and unhomely; nothing hung on the walls save for some dusty shelves, and there was little to no furniture. Just before you lost the light, something shifting at the other end of the room caught your eye, and you saw what looked like a line-up of small pokémon, but nothing else.

Now that your 'disturbance' was put down to nothing, you could hear the woman speaking again. This time it was far clearer, just like it should have been since she was only metres away from you; perhaps whatever had protected you from her sight had vanished? "Psyduck, here's another good one." There was a pause, and the click of some machine. "Point that at the little birdy, now. Light her up, Kirlia, sweety."

The unmistakable glow of psychic energy pierced the blackness, at the other end of the room. The end of the room where you had thought you'd seen some pokémon, and now you were proved to be correct. The pinkish glow illuminated the five immobilised pokémon, hanging due to telekinetic energy somewhere a few feet above the ground. The air suddenly got a little cold as the Psyduck powered up an Ice Beam, and the poor targetted bird pokémon had no choice but to absorb the damage and the pain. For a moment, you could see that it was a Starly, but the identities of the other restrained pokémon were unclear as the glow faded out again, and there were more sounds of the woman reaching down to rustle in the bag at her feet.

Behind you, in the half-open doorway, came another sound. You thought you heard a softly spoken "hey," but couldn't be sure; the sounds seemed human, anyway. It could have been that poison trainer from earlier, but now that you think about it, he had disappeared the moment you reached the alleyway...

Four kicks was all Joseph needed to clear away enough of the rotten planks making up that poor excuse for a door. Four kicks, and in he went, crawling into a dark and dusty and eerily silent room on the chance that one of his pokemon was inside with a presumed ally. He went into a coughing fit as soon as the dirty air touched his lungs, but his current mindset was not one that cared about how much sound he was making.

The all-around strangeness of the room was just about to reach him while he got to his feet when a muffled voice (also odd) reached his ears, and shortly after he was slightly blinded as the room was lit up by a psyduck's flash attack. His hands reflexively went up to shield his eyes from the sudden light, and as soon as he could make out the room he froze in place, not making a sound.

He was staring at a rather unattractive woman, owner of the psyduck no doubt, who had probably also caused the light that had brought Joseph into the room. He was about to explain himself, expecting the woman to demand who he was, but then he realized...that she didn't seem to actually be able to see him, despite the flash attack. Joseph was barely able to register the lackluster features of the room, and more importantly the presence of the group of small pokemon on the opposite end. As the woman let the flash fade away, Joseph decided to crouch down, and eventually move away from the doorway he had just entered. He didn't know what was going on, but he quickly decided that he didn't want to be seen until he figured it out.

"Psyduck, here's another good one." Joseph heard the woman quite clearly, and wondered why while the woman paused, and some machine clicked. "Point that at the little birdy, now. Light her up, Kirlia, sweety."

Joseph watched in horror as the unseen psychic-type lit up the pokemon at the far end of the room using its powers. The only one Joseph could identify before the glow faded, a starly, was rather cruelly attacked by the psyduck's ice beam, then it seemed like the woman was doing something with the empty bag she had at her feet.

Whatever's going on here, it can't be good...I want to try to save those pokemon, but if she has a kirlia, there's no way I can do anything as I am now. This might be connected with ledyba and volbeat, so they should probably be coming through that far door in a few minutes, after the battle outside is over; I can make my move then. Also, why didn't she see me? There's gotta be something else in here that I missed... Joseph's mind was racing as he prepared to move away from the doorway. He thought he heard someone outside whisper "hey", but as he couldn't be sure without giving himself away, he decided to just move away from the door, still crouching, and make a slight motion to whomever might be outside to come in if they wish.

(Summary/Important Info:[/i] Joseph is crouched down, and moving away from the door as silently as he can. Other than that, he's basically going to wait and see what happens.)

Rightfully horrified by the apparent actions and abuse by this woman, you began to back away from the scene rather than confront it. As you had concluded, this was the sensible solution; how were you to deal with someone with a far more powerful pokémon? As you moved, the noises outside stopped immediately, until you made your token gesture, encouraging whoever it was to come in.

After a moment, you could hear some quiet, careful scrambling, and there was another body next to you. There was another click, and the Psyduck lit the room with a bright yellow move as a different attack was sent towards the captive pokémons. This allowed you to momentarily glimpse your unexpected companion, though the unpleasant-looking woman with the Psyduck remained oblivious of your presence, since she was facing the opposite wall and was clearly absorbed in whatever malicious things she was doing. The person who had climbed through the hole in the door to join you was a girl, not even in her twenties yet, despite her shock of short white hair, fashionably styled. That was about as much as you had had the opportunity to take in, since the Psyduck's flash had been very brief, and you could hear the woman ahead cackling as darkness enveloped the room once more.

The next thing you knew, there was a hand over your mouth, but though you panicked for just a moment, you soon realised that this was still the white-haired girl. There was breath at your ear, and you could feel her huddled close to you, making as little noise as possible.

"My name is Shaira," she said softly, so softly, obviously trying to show you that she was on the same side as you and could be trusted. Her voice was young and attractive, like the rest of her (from what you could remember), yet there was something hard in her manner. "And I need us to be quiet." Another flash of light brought the room into sight once more, this time with a brilliant blue, and you could see this girl bring a slender finger to her lips, then point slowly to the tall woman and her Psyduck. The light faded away again as her hand slipped from your face, trusting you, but she did not break the close proximity. "I need to know how much you know," she said, just as another loud attack was sent at another anonymous pokémon, conveniently preventing the tall woman from hearing your hushed conversation. It's safe to say that, should you stay subtle and quiet, the unpleasant woman won't notice you. She's obviously having too much fun.
