This peaceful, quiet village is where you're going to start, eh? Looking for you sister in this wide, unforgiving world of pain and suffering. You stood near the Pokemon Center, looking this way and that and trying to find something that would give you a clue in the right direction. There wasn't much going on right now as the whole town was mostly filled with retired old folk content to sit on their porches and tell stories of impossible feats. One was actually rambling on on how he accomplished going to school in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways, for six miles. Of course, he probably only lived a mile from school and this section didn't get snow that often...did it?

Back to the present though, you sighed as you tried to figure out what you could do to start your quest. Tia could be of some help or you could attempt going door to door to see if anyone had seen her. Or you could head into the center and ask the nurse. She probably knew most of the people here.

And then the entire place seemed to come alive. An ambulance screeched around the corner and slammed to a stop beside the center. A couple of guys lifted out a stretcher with what looked like Doduo sprawled on it. It was missing several feathers from its entire body and looked like it had fought with a flamethrower and lost badly. A girl, about 15, raced after them into the center, sobbing loudly.

Well, that was weird. You could go see what's up and stay away from where the Doduo came from or start your search somewhere not as chaotic.
Silence is merely another language.

The cry before | The lull during | The silence after

Cole stood in bewilderment of what he had just witnessed. He did not see any signs of a fire nearby but after a moment or two of thought he came to the conclusion that the burns must be results of a recent Pokemon battle. A battle is something Cole had always wanted to participate in, but he had never gotten the chance. Unless of course you count the childhood games that he had played with his closest companion Tia. In these games he would pretend to be a Tyranitar or some other vicious beast and wrestle around with the Sentret for hours on end until one or both were completely exhausted. These were the things that made the partners the perfect pair, they had experienced so much over such a long time and they had experienced it all together.

Back to the matter at hand, Cole considered his options carefully before making his first move, I wonder what kind of Pokemon would attack another so violently, he thought to himself. Regardless, I’m not getting involved in something that has nothing to do with me, especially something so blatantly dangerous. But I wonder where I should begin… I suppose I could ask around but I doubt that would do me any good, I’ve been trying that for years and nothing has turned up… I think my best bet would be to just leave town and start from there. I’ve all but exhausted my resources here…

His mind made up and his path set, Cole set off for the nearest edge of town. He walked for a good while before finally reaching the border of the now slightly chaotic forest town, which border he was not certain, but what was certain was that this was it. This was the moment he had been waiting for the past four years, the moment when he finally left Nogou in search of his poor sister. He turned his heel and took one final look at his old town, the place where he had spent his entire life, and turned back towards the green expanses.

As you wandered through the village, you were acutely aware of several pokemon you passed, a few curiously following you, but the only one to make it's appearance was a Snubbull, doing so by aggressively attacking the back of your legs. Whether this was because it was confused and angry or just because it felt unnoticed was hard to tell, at first glance.

The Snubbull growled up at you, sharing a glare with you however shortly you would permit it, and looked plenty ready to continue the assault if its needs weren't met.

Cole stared cautiously at the strange, pink dog Pokemon which had just attacked him so viciously in the legs. As hard as he tried, he could not tell what the source of his opponents rage was. One thing was clear however, despite what its inspiration was, the Snubull was looking for a fight, and it wanted one now.

Cole had never seen such a strange Pokemon before; it seemed to be a cross between a bulldog and a very, very ugly little girl. It was basically a pink, spotted dog wearing a pink, spotted dress, not a very attractive sight. It doesn’t matter how strange it looks at this point, he thought, all that matters is how it fights…

Cole then unclipped a single, red-and-white Pokeball from his belt and tossed it into the air with greaqt enthusiasm. As the ball hit the ground, it exploded in a conflagration of white light that convoluted and reshaped itself into the shape of the Pokemon which Cole had spent the last four years living with and growing with. The light soon faded and in its place there rested a very anxious looking squirrel Pokemon. Tia looked around anxiously until her beady black eyes met with Cole’s blue ones, at which point the Pokemon seemed to calm down and cheer up considerably. That was, until, she saw the seriousness in her friends eyes which caused her to look about in concern until she discovered the source of Cole’s uncomfortable stare.

It was then that Tia locked eyes with her opponent and let loose a sound that could be considered a snarl if not for the fact that it was extraordinarily high-pitched and adorable. The tension was palpable as the two Pokemon were locked in an eternal stare-down. It seemed that the whole world had stopped rotation simply for these two creatures to do battle in this field.

Suddenly, Cole broke the silence, “Alright Tia, we’ve waited a long time and this is finally it! It’s finally time for our search to begin, but this little guy is standing in our way. Let’s take care of it! I want you to wait for him to attack you first, and then use your tail to vault yourself out of the way. Next, vault yourself back into him and get ‘em with a Scratch attack. “

The Sentret nodded her head in understanding and faced her opponent with great anticipation, awaiting her opponent’s opening assault.

As soon as Tia had heard you commands she crouched close to the ground and wrapped her tail around her entire body in a sort of coil-spring affair. The Snubbull was clearly baffled by the sudden appearance of another Pokémon in the area, and at first it didn't look like it was even going to attack, but it didn't take long for the bulldog Pokémon to put two and two together and realize that the two of you were working as a team... of two (wow, I'm not sure I've ever said the word 'two' so many times in one sentence). I'll tell you the truth about this Pokémon though; you probably could have enlisted his help without even having the need to battle. You see, the dog only attacked you because he was a bit hungry. Now that you've decided to take arms against the thing though, it's a whole other story.

You'd be amazed at how quickly those tiny little legs can carry a Snubbull. Or maybe you wouldn't, but either way, the pink Pokémon moved awfully fast. You'd always considered Tia to be fairly quick too, but this dog was insane, and despite Tia being on guard for the attack, she couldn't quite move fast enough. The tackle attack was only a glancing blow, but with a lot of speed behind it, and so caused some considerable damage. Tia did manage to make some distance between the two combatants by springing out of the way like you had suggested, but before she was fully prepared to bridge the gap for her next assault, the Snubbull was already half way there.

Humans don't, as a rule, give Pokémon the credit they probably deserve. Sure, it's good to say "You know, I told my Pokémon what to do in that battle", but sometimes it's inevitable. Sometimes the Pokémon simply have to think for themselves, and that's what Tia did. She knew that there was no way she could execute her scratch attack from the 'springing' position that she'd got herself into, and there was no time to abandon that bit of strategy, so she came up with an alternative. Instead of springing into range to use Scratch, Tia transformed her acrobatic feat into a full blown Tackle attack. Her shoulder hit the wild Snubbull fair in the stomach, and from the squealing noise that he made, he hadn't exactly been expecting it.

But Tia wasn't finished. Not one to let you down, she decided she'd better try that Scratch attack like you asked, so she leaped onto the Snubbull's chest and scratched wildly at his face. Snubbull didn't exactly take kindly to this, and managed to fling the Sentret off himself, but not before sustaining massive damage. What's more, the dog Pokémon decided not to try for the first attack this round; he was going to leave that up to you while playing the defense.

A smirk crossed Cole’s face to hide the mix of emotions which did battle beneath the surface of the young trainer’s skin. Although he was very, very proud of his friend for her improvisations in the midst of battle, he was also a bit disappointed when he saw the Snubbull’s reaction to the appearance of Tia. It was obvious from the small Pokemon’s surprise that it was not expecting a fight, which meant that Cole was simply wasting a great deal of time with his current actions. Although, from the looks of it, there was no running away at this point and he could use the battle experience. So it was on.

Snapping back to reality, Cole decided to share his newfound feeling of pride with his partner. “Great job Tia!” he shouted encouragingly. “Just like when we were younger…” As Cole trailerd off he thought to himself, It was true, Tia had pulled many of the same improvisations and variations when we used to wrestle around back at the house. It seems like perpetual boredom has finally paid off, in a big way too. Now what to do next… It seems like he’s taking a defensive stance…

Cole stood in thought for a few moments as the two Pokemon were still locked in their eternal stare down. The silence between the opponents was so profound it was approaching eerie as neither made a move or sound. It was then that Cole was struck by inspiration and a brilliant form of mounting an offensive assault.

“Alright I got it,” his voice rang out like a chorus of bells amidst the perpetual silence. “Tia, listen closely. I want you to concentrate real hard and Focus your attack power as much as you can. Next, if he does nothing, hit ‘em with a full speed Tackle. But if he attacks, just try to blind side him. Alright?”

Tia seemed quite lost at first, but after a few moments of seemingly deep thought, she finally nodded her head in agreement and faced back towards the Snubbull. She then began her attack sequence by furrowing her eyebrows and scrunching up her nose in a manner that, despite the situation at hand, was quite adorable.

Tia closed her eyes as she began to concentrate all her energy stored in her body. She searched deep down inside her for that extra power that was stored away. As she searched she also thought about the upcoming attack she would be launching. To use Focus properly she would need to actually focus on the task at hand as well as boosting her strength.

Suddenly she felt a burst of adrenaline. She knew what she must do and she was confident in her ability to execute her attack. Tia laid her tail to the ground and tensed as she pushed all her body wait onto the tail. In an instant she pushed her tail forward and was propelled at immense speed towards the wild Snubbull.

Unfortunately Snubbull had been anticipating any attack that was coming. Although he wasn't expecting Tia to use it's tail to propel itself, Snubbull still darted forward in an attempt to meet Tia with a Tackle of it's own.

The two pokemon grew closer and closer as they both readied themselves for the upcoming collision. The tension could be cut with a knife as you anxiously waited for the clash that could change the tide of the match in an instant. It was going to be a test of strength and endurance. Which ever pokemon could stay on its feet after the mighty clash would surely take the advantage.

They grew closer and closer and them...BOOM!! the two met with an incredible clash as their bodies collided and were both thrown back a mighty distance. This wasn't enough for either pokemon though. As they were thrown back they quickly recovered and threw themselves at each other yet again, meeting yet again with a thunderous clash. The two pokemon were held in a deadlock as they tried to knock their opponents off their feet. Their eyes met and both held a fiery glow that showed they were not going to back down. The power around them was flowing and it soon teared them apart, throwing Tia back to you and knocking her off her feet. Both her and Snubbull got back to their feet and prepared themselves for the next round.

Cole was blown back, both physically and mentally, by the display he had just witnessed between his partner and her opponent. He slowly brought himself back up to his feet and righted his sense of balance with a good bit of stumbling around aimlessly. Once he was balanced, Cole watched in awe as both Tia and the Snubbull worked their ways back to their feet. It’s strange, he thought, that two creatures that small could cause something like that. It just goes to show you that you never know what to expect from Pokemon I suppose. Anyway, I’m gonna have to think of a new strategy, and think of one fast. It seems like this Snubbull is getting more and more anxious as the battle gets more intense.

It was then that Cole was struck with a powerful recollection of times past, more specifically, the only time that Tia had beaten him in one of their “wrestling matches.” His new battle strategy was suddenly the easiest thing he had ever come up with. Cole wasted no time and shouted his new commands to the Scout Pokemon, “Alright Tia I’ve really got it this time! I want you to spring forward and meet him head on with a Tackle again, but this time I want you to use his momentum against him and roll him through like you did to me that one time!”

With the mention of “that one time” Tia broke from her intense battle stare and took a quick, confused glance at her trainer. It was obvious then to Cole that she had no idea about the exchange that he was talking about. How do I explain this…? he thought angrily to himself.

After a few moments of thought, an idea shot through Cole’s mind like a cannon. “I’ve got it!” he exclaimed enthusiastically as he began to look around at his surroundings for any objects on which he might demonstrate what he was attempting to explain. An extremely satisfied smile exploded across his face as his eyes passed over a tree stump which had been uprooted by the recent exchange of attacks. Cole grabbed the stump and held it directly in front of his chest, made sure Tia was looking, and performed a mock interpretation of what he wanted her to attempt. As he began, Cole bent at the knees and performed a backwards roll, thrust his right foot into the bottom of the stump, and tossed it behind him, using the momentum to carry the stump a great distance into a nearby tree.

He then looked up and locked eyes with Tia who gazed upon her trainer with a newfound understanding. She nodded her head and faced back towards the opposing Pokemon, who seemed not only utterly baffled by what had just transpired, but also a bit more intense out of anticipation.

Tia readied herself for what she was about to try and achieve. This move would require perfect timing and perfect execution if it were to work. Having finally readied herself for the attack she looked back towards the Snubbull. Snubbull pulled an evil smirk and suddenly pulled a pretty frightening face for what some regard a pretty cute Pokemon. You could see Tia shudder from the sight of it, now your attempt t a wrestling move was going to be twice as hard as Snubbull would be moving quicker than you were.

Tia though shook herself and regained her composition before starting to run towards the Snubbull. Snubbull, seeing this as a challenge, started running towards Tia. Another head on collision was inevitable, unless Tia could pull off this move. The tension again was astounding as the two Pokemon got nearer and nearer, the concentration on both Tia's and the Snubbull's face was astonishing. Seeing Snubbull concentrating like that was a bit worrying though, what could the little dog be planning?

As they got nearer and nearer Snubbull suddenly bared its razor sharp fangs, which as well as being razor sharp were currently on fire. Seems Snubbull wants to use Fire Fang. Tia's concentration didn't faze once as she continued her head on rush towards Snubbull, she obviously knew she had to stay away from those fangs.

Suddenly they met, and what happened seemed to happen in slow motion. The two Pokemon were within inches of each others when Tia moved. She bent suddenly and Snubbull carried on and started over her. Tia rolled backwards like you had with the stump, and kicked up. Snubbull though, with his speed being slightly faster had just managed to turn his head and graze a long fang along Tia's shoulder as he flew over her. Tia thrust her foot up and into Snubbull adding to his already speedy forward momentum he flew over Tia and slammed into a tree.

Snubbull picked itself up from its collision with the tree and looked back towards Tia. It started running towards her but stumbled and fell flat on its face, the collision with the tree had addled its senses for a bit. This was the time to finish it off if you could, or catch it; this little dog was a hardy fighter and could be a great addition to the team...

Cole watched in great anticipation as his strategy worked to near perfection and Tia launched her opponent backwards into a tree. The Snubbull had put up quite a fight and was clearly a bit more skilled than Tia was naturally. It seemed as though the only way Tia had gained the upper hand was Cole’s expertly executed game plan. Although the aforementioned game plan was probably beginners luck more than anything, Cole and Tia’s confidence were, at this point, sky high. That wasn’t the only thing that had changed about Cole since the beginning of the battle. Something else had drastically changed, his train of thought regarding the small, pink dog.

When we first started I thought that Snubbull looked absolutely ridiculous, he thought to himself, I had no idea he would put up this much of a fight. I hadn’t thought of this before, but after seeing his speed and that fire attack… Maybe I should try and catch this strange Pokemon. It would be a lofty feat, but in its present condition perhaps now is my best chance at ensnaring him… I just hope I do this right… Cole trailed off and reassessed the situation over and over again in his head until, finally, he reached a definitive decision. He would attempt to capture his first Pokemon.

He had, obviously, never attempted anything like this before, unless you count throwing rocks down the well in town when he got bored. This attempt was going to be a groundbreaking experience for him, and he was ready for it. Cole slipped a single red-and-white ball out of his bag and enlarged it to the correct size. Before anticipation could freeze him, the young trainer tossed the Pokeball toward the reeling Pokemon with all of his might. Then, Cole did something that surprised even himself. He closed his eyes.

He couldn’t even watch, the anticipation was much too great.

For someone who took their eye off the ball right as they threw it, your aim was pretty true. A few moments before the Pokeball flew his way, though, the Snubbull had begun to imitate the battle strategy you and Tia have already empoyed. He was focusing deeply, ridding all thoughts from his head to prepare a final Fire Fang, his only remaining idea and, essentially, a last-ditch prayer to finish your Tia off. Tia was in a good situation herself, and ran around distractingly in front of the focusing Pokemon in an attempt to worsen its dazed condition further, again showing her impressive cunning. The Snubbull lurched forward after these few moments of focus, breaking its concentration by beginning his run at your Pokemon, his front fangs all glowing red. Tia jumped back in horror, afraid to attack the flaming Pokemon, and knowing that if his super-charged attack hit her, she would probably be immolated. In fact, she was frozen in place, a sitting duck awaiting her execution, just until...

...your Pokeball came down ten feet behind the quick Snubbull who had just began his run. The red light of this magic piece of technology materialized the Pokemon and sucked the very angry dog up into its center while you stood not watching, eyes wide shut in anticipation. You couldn't see this, but you could definitely hear the ball shake pretty violently against the terrain for a few seconds, obviously the Snubbull trying to break free. At the moment, he was probably using his Fire Fang on the inside walls of his new prison, assuming that he would pull out all of the stops he could to prevent capture. This rattling was scary for a trainer, and it was almost clear that the Pokemon still had the energy required to break free from the device.

After awhile, though, there was that always assuring "ding" that accompanied the success of any victorious trainer, and your newest Pokemon had been caught! The Pokeball's walls just barely held the fight that the dog put up, but he was forced to succumb to his dazed nature and his starving state-- the latter being a problem that you still haven't yet fixed. Remember that you incited a battle with an innocent starving Pokemon and won; maybe you owed him some food as a "thank you for playing, loser" gift.

Darkness clouded Cole’s vision as the sounds of the thrashing Pokeball rung throughout his head, filling him with anxiety. However, the anxiety was cleared out with a wave of relief as the ding signifying capture cut through the chaotic thrashing. With this relief, Cole slowly opened his eyes, his vision blurring and gradually coming back into focus, adjusting to the natural light. He looked around; trying to clarify what he believed was a successful capture attempt. His eyes drifted over the small red-and-white ball lying peacefully on the ground and there was no sign of the Snubbull anywhere, causing Cole to shout out in elation.

“We did it!” he yelled enthusiastically. “Great job Tia… Tia?” In the midst of congratulating his partner, Cole realized that she was completely nonresponsive, staring in a mixture of fear and awe at the Pokeball now housing the small dog Pokemon. Cole walked cautiously over to the scout Pokemon, picking up the Pokeball on the way and trying not to startle Tia with any sudden movements. “Hey Tia… Are you okay? The battle’s over, look.”

He held the Pokeball out in front of her, which seemed to snap her out of her trance as she began to sniff the ball cautiously. Seemingly satisfied, a smile crossed her face and she jumped up and down in victory. This bouncing didn’t last very long however, and her legs were suddenly too tired to continue as she buckled and fell flat on her back. It was at this point that Cole decided it would be a good time to give his companion a rest and brought out her Pokeball, returning her with a flash of red light. With Tia back in her ball, he then sent out his newest acquisition by tossing out the other ball which he had just recently picked up.

The usual flash of white light followed and once again reformed and took shape, this time the shape of the Pokemon that he and Tia had just defeated. The Snubbull look around confusedly for a few moments until it laid its small eyes landed on Cole. Said eyes were ignited and he charged Cole without a second’s hesitation, but this charge was soon stopped as he stumbled and fell, still dizzy from his encounter with the tree. The young trainer took a few steps forward until he was directly in front of his new companion and bent down next to him, placing his hand on his head.

“Hey buddy, there’s no reason to fight right now,” he consoled. “From now on, we’re gonna be partners! Okay?” The Snubbull lifted his head weakly and stared at his new trainer, giving a weak nod in agreement. His head then fell to the ground as his stomach let out a very loud growl, signifying his intense hunger. Hearing this sound, the proverbial light-bulb went off in Cole’s head and he realized why this Pokemon had initially confronted him. “You were hungry!” he exclaimed astonished.

Cole then dug through his bag for the small pouch containing all of the Pokemon food he had packed for journey. When he found it, he placed a handful on the ground in front of the collapsed Pokemon, whose nose then began to twitch. In response to the food placed on the ground, the Snubbull leapt up with a newfound energy and began to eat the handful with great vigor. As he continued to eat, Cole began to think out loud, “Well I suppose you should have a name… How about… Kane!”

After finishing his meal, the Pokemon once again looked up at Cole and seemed to be considering the question now posed to him. After a few moments, the newly ordained Kane jumped up and down in agreement. “Alright,” the trainer spoke, “it’s decided. Now get some rest.” Similarly to how he did with Tia, Cole removed a Pokeball from his bag and returned the finally-satisfied Pokemon to its contents. Then, he checked his surroundings to decide the best option.

After realizing that he wasn’t that far out of town, Cole decided to make a quick run to the Pokemon Center to rest his battle-weary Pokemon. So he went back into Nogou Village in hopes of healing, supplying, and heading back out.

You headed into the Pokemon Center, handing the nurse your Poke Balls, and she inserted them into the machine. After a few minutes, she called your name and handed you the Pokemon, telling you to take care and come back again.

Wondering why Pokemon Center nurses are instructed to tell you to come again, you didn't noticed a baby Cubone following behind you. As you turned your head to get a close look at it, it jumped behind a dumpster inside of the alley you were walking next to. Not thinking much of it, you continued along down the road, waiting for adventure.

But, when you moved, so did the little Cubone. Trailing behind you, Cubone seemed to let you know it was there by thumping the back of your ankles with its bone. That's just rude, you know!

Anyway, you continued to walk along the road. Still thumping away, you decided that enough was enough. Stomping your foot down, you turned on one heel and addressed the Cubone. It jumped back a foot and threw its club up in the air and let it fall back down into its hand. Looks like a battle to me!

Not one to run away from any kind of challenge, Cole decided quickly to enter his second battle as a Pokemon trainer. He had enjoyed the first one so much that there was no question in his mind that this one would be just as fun. The only question now was: What Pokemon to use? He hadn’t encountered this problem before, simply because, prior to a few minutes ago, he only had one choice. I definitely think that Tia needs the experience more… and she did really well in the first battle… But I’ve never actually battled with Kain before… That’s it. If I want to get to know him better I might as well give it a try.

Cole then reached back into his bag and pulled out the red-and-white Pokeball that housed the Fairy Pokemon and shouted, “Let’s do it Kain!” In similar fashion to what he did a few posts ago, Cole hurled the Pokeball a few feet in front of the small Cubone. The ball then exploded in a flash of white light which convulsed and reformed into the Snubbull. Kain emerged with great vigor, looking even more energized then before his battle with Tia. He bounced up and down in great anticipation of what he immediately recognized as a battle.

A battle plan immediately jumped to Cole’s mind as he shouted out commands to his newest partner, “Alright Kain! Pay attention ‘cause we’re gonna do this one together! I want you to start this battle the same way you ended the last one, start with a Focus and follow up with a Fire Fang!”

Kain nodded his head in understanding and stopped bouncing immediately, a serious look overtaking his countenance. He then began focusing intently upon the move he was about to perform…

The newest member of your clan clearly had some level of respect for you after the battle that you had just shared with him, because despite being a brand new addition to your team, the Snubbull didn't even hesitate when you issued your commands, but simply went about carrying them out. With that said, the puppy Pokémon lowered his boddy down to the ground and concentrated on his next move with a hint of arrogance betrayed in his eyes. The Focus move seemed to work fairly well, turbocharging Kain's special attack stat briefly.

Don't be fooled though... in the time that Kain spent upping his strength, Cubone wasn't just sitting around idly. He'd already begun to move in with an aggressive Bone Club attack, which, to be perfectly honest with you, spelled trouble for your side. The dinosaur Pokémon rushed forward and slammed the bone in his hand down hard upon the pup's head, sending little pink to the ground. The Cubone grinned... obviously you couldn't see that, because you can't see the Pokémon's mouth, but I'll let you in on a little bit of divine knowledge by saying that there was practically an ear-to-ear grin under that bone helmet of his; perhaps he'd never had such an easy shot before, I don't know. Anyway, while he was standing there grinning like an idiot, Kain was preparing to mount his counter attack, and the Cubone hadn't even realized it yet.

Scrambling up off the ground, Kain leaped up at the Cubone who was still not really paying a whole lot of attention. The Dog Pokémon landed on to of the dinosaur thing, throwing it to the ground, and at the same time sinking his teeth into the Cubone's shoulder. As he did so, Kain's teeth began to grow a brilliant orange, and flames started dancing around the base, before running down the tooth and onto the wound inflicted by the bite itself. All in all, you could suffice to say that the Cubone was in a fair amount of pain.

Angered by the recent development in the battle, the little Cubone began to swing its club arounr wildly, cliping Kain on the side of the head once more. There wasn't a whole lot of force behind the attack, but it was enough to cause the Snubbull to cease its attack and roll off of the Cubone. Once free, the wild Pokémon scrambled up to his feet and ran a few paces backwards to get out of immediate range of another bite-type attack, while Kain was trying to stay clear of a further thump on the head from the Bone Club again.
