Well, luckily, the bridge your Aron had been chewing on was scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt anyway, so nobody seemed to be upset about the gaps in the foundation. So therefore, you were free to start your epic Pokemon Journey without any problems of a criminal record hovering over your shoulder.

Millenia was full of tourists today. But that was for a good reason. It was a perfect day for spending at the beach, either sunbathing in the glorious sunlight streaming from the clear blue sky, or hunting for wild Pokemon on the rockier areas. But since there were an awful lot of bikini-clad girls sunbathing, playing volleyball, splashing in the surf... maybe you plan to drop by there, at least for a few minutes.

In fact, the town is full of people in summery clothing, all enjoying the heat, helping themselves liberally from ice-cream vendors, shopping, looking at gardens... just enjoying the day. One of the aforementioned vendors had a Snorunt casting Powder Snow on his stock to keep it frozen, and to entertain his customers.

There was a group of kids running up and down the street, some Pokemon racing with them. They looked like they might be holding some sort of racing contest... or just burning off some steam until they found someone who might want to battle. They'd probably be quite eager for a friendly battle, if you were so inclined.

There were plenty of plesant sorts of parks and open areas in Millenia, and the wild Pokemon appreciated it. If you didn't want to try the beach, maybe you could try your luck at finding a wild Pokemon right in the city.

"Awesome!" Valentine said, adjusting his glasses to get a good-on-full-stare into the trainer's eyes. After all, regardless of what the narrator said about 'written' this and 'unwritten' that--this was for sure on his licensing exam.

...well, semantically, he thought, sure, if you're not interested in the Gym Challenge, you didn't have to do battles, but here he was in a case in his bag especially for said badges, so...

He struck a pose without really meaning to, although such was the style of a proper battle, tossing the tails of his slick jacket back, revealing his belt of Pokeballs, reaching for---who? Now? To be honest, Valentine had no idea what that blue Pokémon was, and it wasn't quite like he had a Pokedex on him or anything--he wasn't THAT cool--and he had nothing of particular interest in terms of fighting a flyer, and who knew what he'd send out? And, for wild battles, he'd go for the weakest Pokémon on the team so they'd get a better chance of experience, but that could lead to a pretty big problem here.

...that left him with his old stand-by! The ball seemingly jumped from his belt into his hand anyway, as if to prevent him from looking like a fool in his first trainer battle, and as he pulled his arm back to toss it out, it started to spin at a fairly high speed in his hand. This was it! Literally DAYS of practice in front of a mirror! His awesome super cool trainer-battle-style launching method!

He shoot out his arm in front of his chest, the ball launching in the air---arching out to the left and curving down to land a few feet in front of him after a beautifully executed arc in the air. The stuff of baseball players and magicians, Valentine thought. "Aron! Go!"

A blast of light and there she stood, the sweet little iron-eating deathly-scary-monster-if-you-thought-about-it-I-mean-really-she-could-destroy-and-eat-a-dump-truck-that's-frightening-thing, and pressed her body down into the ground to prepare for combat, naturally defensive as might come with her breed. As for the other trainer, well--

Valentine's fingers were adjusting his glasses again, out of the sheer excitement of his first MAN AGAINST MAN, BATTLING SPIRITS ENTERTAINED IN GLORIOUS DANCE style AWESOME battle...this would be fantastic for the blog!

But what would he send out, eh? The blue-thing? The Pidgey? Perhaps something else? It was too exciting to be patient enough for the red light to materialize! Here it is, here it comes, he's opening up with a---

Yeah, like the trainer is going to tell you exactly who you're facing right now, bud. "An Aron, huh? Shinx! Pidgey! Return!" the trainer yelled, taking out two pokéballs and engulfing both pokémon in two balls of red light. "I'm going to give you a lesson in pokémon battling, kid. Go! Ponyta!!" the trainer yelled, placing the two pokéballs into his pocket - before taking out another one and pressing the catch upon it.

"Pony! Ponyta!" the pokémon squealed, staring down at your Aron nervously - after all, despite being so tall, it was a somewhat even battle. Yes, the trainer had realised that his Ponyta had a type advantage over your Aron - but if I remember rightly, your pokémon is also a rock type pokémon. As rock is resistant to fire, the weakness that Aron has due to being a steel type was cancelled out - which can only be good for you.

However, the other reason Ponyta was worried was because of the potential moves that it had a feeling that your Aron could learn - which were most certainly detrimental to the fire horse pokémon. I guess the fact that there was water in the near distance didn't help - any kind of water upon a Ponyta is likely to hurt it. "Let the battle begin!" the trainer yelled, pointing his finger towards you in a menacing manner.

I guess what he saying is - make your move.

"Oh, wow! Oh-wow-oh-wow!" Valentine hopped to the side and cocked his head, pointing at the Ponyta.

"That thing is beautiful! Hahah, Pokémon are great!" He clenched his fists, resisting the urge to make a...ahem...noise in response to the adorable pony prancing around the impromptu arena, and lifted his arms in a mock fighting stance, shadow boxing the air about him.

Okay, so, Valentine had to calm down. He was far too excited about these prospects, though, so he had to calm down and take a few breaths as the opposing trainer demanded the battle started. He readjusted his glasses and shook off the uncharacteristic giddiness from his heart that was causing him to act so...so strange. He was a young adult, wasn't he? He'd have to act like one. He gave a nod to Aron, and turned the music up on his device.

"Aron, you know the deal!"

She nodded and started to circle around the Ponyta with her shifting, almost-bug-like legs, the cells in her armor taking a sudden excitement, banding together---a silver sheen shot across her body as she used Harden, and then she lowered her head...and with all the force that she'd use when hunting delicious dump trucks, charged forward with her wonderfully normal-typed Tackle.

Valentine smiled with a swelling pride as he watched his little starter take off...still. Ponyta, huh? Those things are fast. Like, racing fast. And they jump high! ...but he'd never seen one up close, so maybe the stories ended up being exaggerated. Ayers Rock is freakin' huge. Still, it had a beautiful coat and even with the flickering flames about it, it looked more like orange hair. Maybe he'd get a chance to pet it!

With a quick shine and a closer bonding of particles your Aron had succesfully used harden. Its steel outer-shell glistened with a nice shine to it as it was clear the steel was now alot tougher. Quickly, your Aron turned and began to head towards Ponyta ready to tackle. "Your fine Ponyta, just use your speed and take this little pokemon out as soon as you can." He said, seemed as though he was fairly confident this battle would be over quickly, surely he underestimated your Aron's strength. However, if the little pokemon wanted to inflict any damage, she would have to jump up to hit Ponyta's body.

This is what Aron did, the little pokemon leaped up with a tackle but seemed to miss. In shock it didn't realise where it was for a split second and landed on the floor in a failed attempt. Ponyta was already behind your pokemon. Taking a few quick steps towards it. Aron wasn't nearly as fast and the little pokemon braced for impact. A stampeeding Ponyta. As it ran, its hooves flicked upwards and it kicked your little pokemon, not necesarily making her fly - seeing as she was fairly heavy - but the little pokemon was brushed to the side. Hmm, something tells me this battle may very well take a while. Aron had taken very little damage, whe didn't even seem phased as she watched the Ponyta run along, blinking innocently. Yet, Ponyta was very fast and it was going to take something special to be able to land a hit. I suggest a few clever tactics may be in order.

Clever like what im not to sure, but waiting for Ponyta to attack and then countering doesn't seem too bad. Just, how are you going to go about doing it?

"Eh..."

Spoken softly, under the breath. He adjusted his glasses and checked Aron's HP on his Watch, before giving a firm nod to himself. She's still okay, which was the important part, and judging by the way she was looking at him for support made his heart do a little flip. She was a trust-worthy battler, and continued to prove herself time and time again. ...so, how would he handle this particular match up? That thing was fast, and his tiny heavyweight was hardly known for her speed.

He'd have to give her something to work with, though. "Harden!

As the little Pokémon shook herself almost like a cat, covering herself with a brighter sheen, the earlier battle with the Wingull came to mind. This could work, exactly like he had handled those birds! But he couldn't call out the command in such an obvious manner, as he had in the wild battle, because the other trainer could adjust before he had a chance to execute the plan.

"Remember those Wingull? This one's flyin' just as fast, but on the ground! Same tactics as before!" He gave a stern nod and watched the blazing horse, worried for his little monster.

The tactic had worked well enough before, waiting for the attack to come in and just attacking back with full force, using the attacking Pokémon's momentum against it. She had broken a beak last time this happened, and although he hated to admit it to himself, injuring that horse's legs would make this battle far easier. And if not, it might be the only way for him to do damage. The situation here, though--his Pokémon could probably take quite a few hits from whatever the horse decided to launch at him, but it's frail body probably wouldn't withstand a few tackles from his Aron.

Basically, it was a double-edged sword, where every attack would mean taking damage...but Aron was tough.

She stared down the Ponyta, and with silent eyes, dared him to attack.

A fight to where the most durable and defense ready pokemon prevailed. Well an Aron definitely gets my vote over Ponyta any day. Especially one using Harden, which is what your partner pokemon did by your commands. Her metallic skin rose to a higher durability, making any attacks that Ponyta unleashed to be less effective. Good call on that one.

"Don't worry about it Ponyta, just keep using Tackle and he'll eventually fall." came the order from the opposing trainer. Ponyta didn't even nod or what not, it simply rose on its hind legs before sprinting off on all fours towards your Aron. The stomps of the baby horse pokemon could be felt even from where you were.

Aron steadied herself, ready to withstand whatever he had to throw at her. She waited, keeping sure to eye the hooves very carefully. Once the flame horse pokemon came within striking range, Aron shot out with a close range Tackle attack to one of Ponytas feet, causing him to tumble to the ground from the impact.

"Whoa! Ponyta, you allright? Try getting up and using Tackle." He kept himself calm pretty easily, that trainer you was fighting. Which is more then I can say for other trainers I've met, honestly. I couldn't begin to tell you all of it, but whatever. You have the advantage, like that wasn't clear enough. So how did you expect to use it?

But Ponytas have highly strong legs, so i doubt you have much time to contemplate your plan. You better hurry.

Valentine realized, even as a few more passes of combat went on, he was still holding Aron's Pokeball. Shrinking it, he placed it firmly back on his belt and gave himself a little shake so that he wouldn't snatch it off, again, when the Ponya started it's charge. This was it, this was the moment where little Aron had her chance to strike!

"Success!" The trainer cheered, moving a few steps to keep his view of the field level. What was next?

...well, obviously, he was going to have to take advantage of the weight factor, now! "Aron! Hop on top of that Ponyta and Harden! Then, everytime he tries and gets up, you know, just TACKLE him back down to the ground!"

Well, if Aron could have shrugged, she would have--the plan made enough sense to her, despite it's simplicity. Jump on it and hold it down, really? She moved with surprising speed to the fallen horse, leaping into the air as her armor took on even more sheen, clinking out a sweet noise as it became even stronger.

Aha! I knew you would find some way to get around it. Well done, well done indeed. Ofcourse, things could keep changing so do not get ahead of yourself just yet. Keep your composure, keep focused and keep that Ponyta from getting the better of your Aron.

With Ponyta still on the floor, your chance was there - however breifly. With a quick hop your Aron jumped ontop of the grounded horse. Then, she sat ontop of her and let harden do its thing, weighing the fire horse down. As she tried to get up, your pokemon then moved onto your next step, jumping and tackling down on the Ponyta. As she did, the Ponyta yelped in pain. "That's it, get angry Ponyta. Let your flames burn!"

Ahh, this was where your plan had left out one little note. By jumping on Ponyta's back, Aron was now alot closer to the fire burning. Being so close could do alot of damage, and, as sorry as I am to say it - that is exactly what happened. Ponyta yelped in pain and then 'neighed' in anger. The flames on his seemed to burst out, blazing alot hotter and alot brighter than normal. With this, your poor little Aron was now engulfed in flames. Ponyta, with the anger raging had the strength to get up, he then shook himself violently, throwing your little pokemon onto the ground. The heat had also reversed the last harden your Aron used. Harden bonded the particles of your pokemons metal coat together. However, when you heat things they expand..

This could have gone alot better, if it were any other pokemon. It was a brilliant idea. However, unfortunately today had to be the day you were batteling a pokemon with an out-burning fire. Oh dear.

As Aron bounced around trying to cool off her burning body, Valentine flinched on her behalf and instantly felt guilty for having used such a tactic without having the idea that maybe--just maybe--the flaming mane wasn't just for show. Well, he was a rookie, so making rookie-mistakes were to be expected. As Aron's metal cooled down to it's normal color, she turned a fierce eye towards her trainer, as if demanding a command to be called. This took Valentine a bit back--she was awfully ferocious for something so...well, cute.

"Ah...alright, Aron! Harden up again, as usual, then attack the legs with Iron Head!"

...if anything, that might protect her poor head from the hooves of that horse. He stretched his fingers out and tapped his ears with his thumb as if trying to get more music out of them, shaking his head. He was a little worried after that last movement, not sure how to proceed with the battle, how it stands now. There was always the option of substitution, but since the little steel-type wasn't even close to being truly injured, she might take it out on him later.

It wasn't even like Aron could use any of her defense-oriented body to damage the Ponyta, anyway. Unless somehow she got stuck in a hoof or something. His fingers lingered near his belt, posed almost like a gunslinger, just in case he had to make the command for her to return.

OOC: It occurs to me that Iron Head is power 80 in comparison to Tackle's 35, so even at half power because Ponyta's a Fire-type...shouldn't I be sitting at 40 power with the added flinch possibility? Correct me if I'm wrong, you know, with an OOC note, since Valentine wouldn't notice a difference in power. He's just shaking things up to the limits of his Aron's ability.

Appearances can be quite deceiving. This Ponyta, although at a disadvantage in move set and type, wasn’t about to lay down this challenge. She was getting stronger as the battle went on, I have to say, it was quite admirable. Aron, not to be outdone, revved up her gears as well and began to get more enthralled in the battle. Harden’d with extra vigor (too bad stat raising attacks can’t be critical), Aron didn’t even give a fleeting look back as she charged toward her opponent.

Poor Ponyta, such a strong spirit but really unsuited for this match-up. Although she was size-wise bigger, Around nearly doubled her in weight! Well, she charged as well, growling at Aron along the way before going in for a tackle. Although your Aron slowed down a bit, in fear of Ponyta and her burning ambition, she trudged on nonetheless.

The Pokemon collided with the force of two freight trains. Although the two darted like blurs, you were still able to make out, barely though, the actual movements. Ponyta raised her front shins and managed to avoid the attack for the moment, but Aron charged through regardless and collided with her back leg. Normally this would’ve been an extremely successful attack for your side, except in the fray of things, Ponyta actually trampled your poor little guy with her hooves before losing her balance and falling to the side. It wasn't exactly a tackle attack, but it seemed to work.

Those hooves are tough, maybe even tougher that what Aron’s made out of. Oh well, it looked like over-all the round went in your favor. And if I wasn’t mistaken- wait, I’m not- Ponyta was singed a bit on the side from that whole tumble. She tried to take a step forward but was unable to place any power of her foot. She’s a-flinchin!

"Ahh Ponyta!" the other trainer groaned. Now's your chance... might I recommend serving up some doom and destruction, with a generous helping of pain?

OOC: In here, Iron head’s attack power is C class while Tackle is D. If you count resistance in this match up, Iron head would become E and Tackle would have tiny attack power. But if you factor in your STAB, I think you get something like a class D attack with Iron head and Ponyta has a really low attacking power Tackle.

Valentine readjusted his glasses with his middle finger, grinning perhaps a bit too broadly at the power of his dump-truck hunting monster of doom and, well, destruction. She was so sweet outside of combat, but boy oh boy, did she know how to battle. For a moment, Valentine thought she didn't even need him to give the command, but then again, that was the relationship between trainer and Pokémon. He'd have to make the tactical call.

"Atta girl, Aron!" Valentine called, thrusting his fist in the air to give her a show of 'good-job', and the pointed at the Ponyta.

"Watch out for them flames! Iron Head him right into the ground!"

Aron nodded, and started to hunker down for the attack, when Valentine shouted --

"And don't forget to Harden first!"

-- so she did, shining with the brilliant glow of her armor forcing itself into a stronger stuff, before she came breaking out of the glow like a shooting star, her head blazing white with the glow of her trademark move!

That Ponyta was giving her more trouble than it was really worth, Valentine thought, looking down at his Watch. It was just a horse. If it wasn't for the speed and the fire and the hooves it wouldn't be a problem.

You are one vicious punk. Attacking a defenseless horse like that, I mean, come on! Where is your mercy, where is your compassion?! Who told you to be so cruel to this poor, poor animal? It was me? Oh… well… then, good job! Carry on.

Aron dashed with all the speed that its little four legs would allow it. And don’t forget, it was heavily weighed down by all of that metal and rock body. Still, she was pretty speedy. She shined with that now all too familiar metallic glow, and a sching noise could be heard, signaling that Harden was succsseful. It would take more than whatever this Ponyta has to offer to be able to effectively go past those shields, and too cap it all of, the Ponyta couldn’t even do anything this round!

Throwing all thoughts of mercy away, Aron lowered her head and concentrated her metallic energy into it. Ponyta looked at aron, wide-eyed with fear, and tried to get away, by alas, she was stuck! Your attack from before left her unable to move, she was in pain. Her fears were realized when Aron jumped, propelled by her long dash, and slamed right into Ponyta. Ponyta fell back, and began to breath heavily. Scruff marks were appearing all over her once elegant sheen.

I’m sure the opposing trainer thought at the time, if it wasn’t for your Aron’s weight, and steel and moves, it wouldn’t be a problem.

This battle was definitely going in his favor. Valentine shook off any feelings he had of losing this first round, rather impressed with how tenacious his little monster was faring overall. This whole battling thing...was really fullfilling! It was terribly enjoyable experience, watching his Pokemon succeed at what it was born to do. And her armor was so solid right now, she'd probably be able to deflect bullets. And the Ponyta was lookin' rough. Really rough.

"Tackle!"

He took a step forward while giving the command, and Aron burst into action as soon as his foot connected with the dusty earth. She was getting tired, sure, after all this combat, but she still had plenty of fight left in her. And that speedy, fast Pokemon was becoming slower and slower with added injury and the bruised legs. Which is what she was aiming for--with a powerful leap into the air directly for the tangled mess of four legs under the Ponyta's body. After all, the strategy was working fine so far!

Valentine smiled, adjusting his glasses as sweat caused them to slide down his face, eyes focused on the other Trainer and his reaction to the battle. Show me the basics, eh?

Okay, it’s the battle of a fire horse and an iron crawler! Or if you like, it could the battle of an iron crawler and a fire horse! On your side, you were already well on your way to dominating this fight … only thing was, Pokémon fights could potentially turn awry on you with their unpredictability.

Ponyta whinnied, her beautiful flames intensifying with her rage. Rearing up on her hind legs (she’s got some awesome determination there) despite the pain, the fiery horse started to gallop with her teeth gritted towards Aron. The quicker she finished this, the better – pain was a wonderful ally, but a hated foe.

Continuing upon her road, with her head lowered for a Tackle, Aron didn’t really manage to see the horse until she was already close to her. Letting out a squeak of surprise, Aron tried to halt the Ponyta in her tracks with hardened metal, but the rage focused within those diamond-hard hooves … let’s just say that those appendages were a force to be reckoned with. Ponyta, blinded by rage and pain, tried to trample Aron to bits with her fury.

Aron shrieked, hurriedly curling up in defense as the hooves pelted her back relentlessly.

Fufufufu...Valentine wanted to break his Watch. It seemed everything was subjective, you see. Looking at this logically for perhaps two minutes: While the frail Ponya was indeed somewhat of a physical attacker, in terms of sheer ability and overall skill (and thus explained those hooves), Aron was a physical defender, who had spent tons of time and energy over this battle enhancing that with a special ability to increase said defense. And, judging by energy consumption, the Ponyta was staying close to the GAL and her 'tackle' attack. This meaning, she's not receiving STAB at all. So, Aron, a physical defender with several Hardens on her shell is receiving TEN POINTS of damage this round: Obviously a critical hit, since LAST turn she took FIVE POINTS...al-...also from a critical hit? From a movie Ponyta isn't particularly great at on a Pokemon she's not particularly adept at damaging. Meanwhile, poor Aron, using the full weight of a basic move (and moves she receives STAB) for, could only dish out a few measly points, and takes so much damage no matter how much of this battle was set up for her defense.

...yeah, really, really, subjective. And because of that, his dear Aron was being TRAMPLED by some kinda stupid horse out of a 14-year-old girl's wet dream and there wasn't a damned thing he could do about it. Obviously, any form of defense is absolutely out of your mind, even if -- counting resistances -- Aron should be taking a quarter damage from any attack, and Valentine should only ever use offensive moves, because anything else is obviously useless in the frame of logic!

"TACKLE IT!" He shouted, "Straight up into the sky! Knock it over, and come back down on it with an Iron Head! You can do it, Aron!"

Passion stirred in his heart. Sometimes life just didn't make sense. Still, maybe Pokemon battles didn't come down to type-match-ups or the moves you select, and some pokemon will always be inferior to others. All he had to do was get Aron out of there so he could withdraw her and concede defeat. This boy was right: He was outclassed.

edit: Been rereading this and thinking of ways to edit it. Just so we're savvy, l.e. You're easily one of my favorite refs (I gotta thing for Gourmet, too.) and I appreciate your work in my thread as well as your writing ability and whatnot. The venting in this post is NOT directed at you, or the system, or anything. It's just a bit of pent up frustration due to inconsistency. That's all. <3
