A Close-in Weapon System(CIWS) uses short bursts of fire to destroy in-coming enemy Anti-Ship missiles. Most Japanese War-ships are currently equipped with the American Phalanx CIWS, but the JMSDF plans to replace these with their own version. The problem with most CIWS systems are the range capability. Although the maximum range of most CIWS's is 4500m, most missiles are only destroyed at a distance of 500m away from the ship, still close enough to possibly do damage to the ships sensors or communications arrays. The Japanes version hopes to lengthen this distance to hopefully 750m-1000m every time, so the ship would take extremely little, or no damage by shrapnel. The CIWS system can also be used against Aircraft, but because planes carry more then one missile, and can fire multiple missiles at one time, the cIWS will have a built in Ground-to-Air Missile for use against enemy aircraft. There are also small versions of CIWS systems that are installed onto Tanks with built in anti-tank missiles. The JGSDF might be working with the JMSDF to create a small version for tank use. Aswell as a smaller version for tanks, the JASDF also shows interest on an Aircraft Mounted CIWS for use on large Transport planes like the C-130. The system could be installed on top of the aircraft, like an old WW2 gunners position, and will be able to turn 360 degrees for an all round view, and a built in Air-to-Air missile. This project might turn out to include all aspects of the military, and many prototypes will be produced to find out if all versions are a viable means of protection. |
