Georgian forces have opened a full attack on the seperatist region of South Ossetia, following a week on skirmishes along the border between South Ossetia and Georgian controlled territory, despite recent assurances to Moscow that they would begin cease fire talks with the seperatists, the Georgian military commander in South Ossetia has issued a statement saying the operation is intended to "restore constitutional order" to the region, while the government says the troops are "neutralising separatist fighters attacking civilians". Russia's special envoy in South Ossetia, Yuri Popov, says Georgia's military operation shows that it cannot be trusted and he calls on Nato to reconsider plans to offer it membership |

Russia is moving elements of the 55th army into South Ossetia in order to secure the safety of Russian civilians in South Ossetia and to re-enforce Russian peacekeepers in the area. |
