The city of Magadan has become the center piece of a new proposal put to the Far Eastern Federal District for development of the region, the plan calls for the use of Magadan as a major sea port in the summer months to export the minerals and other natural resources of the Far East to the rest of the world in particular China and Japan, the plan however is very expensive and despite local support is unlikely to go ahead without funding from the central government in Moscow. |

The plans for the enhancement of the Far East focussing on the city of Magadan have met with support in Moscow, particulally for the amount of new jobs it would create in the Far East and the new exports it could grant Russia, however the costs and protests from several pressure groups such as those who had relatives die in the Gulags building the "road of bones" which would be repaved in th plan and many of the unmarked makeshift graves in or by the road would be disturbed, mean that the central government is unwilling to release enough for the plans to go ahead in there initial form and will likely face cut backs. |
