Government Will Fund Verige Bridge

Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Telecommunications, Andrija Lompar, today announced that the Verige Bridge would be funded by the government, in order for the constuction to begin. The funds will be recouped through toll booths, which will charge €1 for motorcycles, €3 for cars and €4 vans and €5 for HGVs. Pedestrians will be allowed to cross free of charge. Mr. Lompar also said that a 'bridge pass' would be made available for regular crossers, at a cost of €50 a year.

Work on the Bridge, which will link two sides of the Gulf of Kotor via the Verige Channel, is scheduled to begin at the end of the peak touist season, in October, and will be finished by March the following year. It is expected to cost around €50million.

Fires Rage In Montenegro

Several properties in Montenegro have been destroyed by fire, which are believed to have been started by arson. A warehouse in Bar was burnt in the early hours of the morning, and a villa in Budva was burnt to the ground-the fire spread to two neighbouring houses, but these were put out in time to save them.

The warehouse was said to hold large amounts of tobacco, which was confirmed by many residents in Bar, including Sergej Ćetković, who said, "Bar still smells of cigarettes now! It was a great morning."

The warehouse and villa were both owned by "Boban Rajović", which has been discovered as an alias of Sergio Aralmani, a mobster recently arrested in Italy.

Verige Bridge Project Collapsed

Funding for the Verige Bridge project has collapsed, after concerns that the government wouldn't be able to fund the €50million necessary for it. Andrija Lompar has claimed that he was given false information by the Ministry of Finance over the money. It is also thought that with the world economy becoming considerbly shaky, the government is saving its money for investment in the banks and stock market.

Rumours that Milo Đukanović is involved in Drug Trafficking are "Compltely False and Libellous"

Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister, today told the press that allegations of drug, tobacco and gun smuggling made by the opposition newspaper "Dan" are untrue. He said during a press conference: "Dan certainly has a wicked imagination. The allegations made against me are completely false and libellous. I have never, and will never, be involved in drug trafficking. Drugs are evil substances, and I would never be involved in their production, transportation or distribution. I am in the right mind to sue the newspaper."

"Dan" wrote a 2-page article which linked Đukanović to Italian prisoner Sergio Aralmani, who was recently stabbed in prison. Large quantities of drugs, tobacco and guns were found in several of Aralmani's properties. "Dan" said that Đukanović was in partnership with Aralmani. They also accused him of burning down Aralmani's warehouse in Bar, and his villa in Budva to destroy evidence, and even organising the murder of Aralmani. Mladen Milutinović, editor of "Dan", has not yet been seen for comment.

Clashes in Podgorica over Kosovo

Protesters have clashed with police in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica at a rally against the government's decision to recognise Kosovo's independence.

At least 20 people were injured in clashes with the police who used tear gas to disperse the crowds at the rally which about 10,000 people attended.

Majority-Albanian Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February.

Serbia has expelled the ambassadors of both Montenegro and Macedonia, which also recognised Kosovo as a state.

Montenegro and Serbia made up a single state until a referendum in 2006. Montenegro hopes to become a future member of both the EU and Nato, both of which are heavily involved in Kosovo.

On Wednesday, a majority at the UN General Assembly agreed to allow Serbia to challenge the legality of Kosovan independence at the International Court of Justice.

Waving Serbian flags and shouting "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia", protesters demanded the immediate reversal of the government's decision to recognise independence.

Many of the injured appear to be policemen. Most of the injuries appeared to be light, caused by stones or "direct clashes", Podgorica hospital manager Vladimir Dobricanin told the AFP news agency.

Many Montenegrins consider themselves Serbs and back Belgrade's opposition to Kosovo's secession.

"We demand the government revoke its decision on the recognition of Kosovo," Vasilije Lalosevic, a member of the opposition, pro-Serbian Socialist People's Party, was quoted as saying by Reuters.

He also called for a nationwide referendum on the issue.
