Finnish mobile phones corporation, Nokia has pledged to donate one million phones from 2002-2003 to Liberia in order to increase mobile phones usage in the African country, and to make a step towards improving communications across the continent as a whole after discussions with the Finnish government. As well as this, Nokia is planning to set up a factory in Liberia's capital, Monrovia to assist their country in reducing unemployment across West Africa, and to help the country in their trade. Nokia's spokesperson today said: "Today is a day where Nokia truly lives up to its slogan: 'Connecting People'. And what better to people to connect than those who are torn about by poverty and bloodshed. We are pledging one million of our unused cell phones from 2002 and 2003 to the country not only to help our government in creating valuable ties with the republic, but to help Liberia create valuable ties with its people. To correspond with this, the city manager of Espoo (where Nokia is based) has formally invited the Liberian capital to become a sister city. |

News has reached us that President Halonen and Denmark's Prime Minister Anders Foghs Rasmussen have agreed to construct an automobile company owned by both governments, as well as a handful of Finnish and Danish investors, following their meeting earlier today in Helsinki. The company, which currently goes unnamed, has said to focus on the manufacturing of cheap low-polluting vehicles, as the two countries strive to reduce carbon emissions not only in Northern Europe, but across the globe. More news will come from this agreement as the day progresses. Edited by Finland, Oct 13 2008, 05:22 PM.
