Public opinions

Recently, the JSDF released two polls on the quetion of nuclear weaponry and the military of Japan
These polls were for record purposes only.

first poll went as follows:

Because Article 9 does not say that Japan cannot have nuclear weapons, will nuclearising the military bea good idea?

Yes - 17%
No - 85%
No comment - 2%

These was as expected, as much of the citizens are very much against even nuclear weapons in japanese territory.

Second poll was:

Is Japan have a defensive military a good idea[1] and would a more offensive role be a good idea? [2]

Yes[1] - 57%
No[1] - 43%

Yes[2] - 5%
No[2] - 95%

These results are quite similar to the last poll results.

As before mentioned, these polls were for record purposes only, and hope it did not anger any citizens.

Another Two Soryu Class Submarines are going to be made to completment the five currently in contruction, awaiting commision, and planned, to make the total count Seven.

The JSDF is also thinking about spending more money on training regular soldiers and special forces. The extra training budget will come out of the procurement budget and an expected $500-750million extra is expected to be spent on training.

The JGSDF and the JASDF will work together to produce a public military exercise. F-15J Eagles and Mitsubishi F-2s will work alongside the Type 90 tank, Type 89 IFV, and ground soldeirs in one of the forces largest demonstrations since the formation of the Self Defense Force.
The Minister of Defense hopes that this demonstration will increase the positive view from the public of the SDF, and will lead to furhter increased popularity of the forces.

The demonstration will be held in early 2009.

The special Rescue team, a part of the Japan coast guard, had to be deployed today to rescue a ship that was apparently attacked by armed "Pirates". When the team arrived, along with a small number of Special Security team(a coast guard special forces branch) no ship other than the slowly sinking one was in sight.
2miles away on shore, a small cargo boat was intercepted by a patrol boat. On the cargo boat, a large qauntity of drugs and a box of handguns was found.

After interrogating the people arrested on the cargo boat, they said that the sinking ship was meant as a distraction, hoping more ships would be drawn away from the shore so they could get through without without any prolems.
everyone included have been arrested and await trial.

Interrogaters suspect the captain of the captured ship to be North Korean. Further action will be taken to fully identify the individual. Another individual is also suspected of being Korean, and is being furhter interogated at this moment about his nationality, and what he was doing.
Althoguh not yet proved, the MoD fears that they are spies from North Korea and smuggling in weapons to other koreans possibly already in Japan.
If they are found guilty, then they will be deported back to Korea under strict instructions to the individual, and the North Korean government.
The Japanese Police Agency have also been told to look out for Korean looking people who look suspicous.

The National Diet have been considering completely banning North Koreans from entering the country completely, and any found doing so will be punished, as a safeguard to national security.

The MoD have been talking with Cyberdyne, the creator of the HAL 5 robotic suit. The suit is made to give a partialy disabled person more strength to walk, and carry heavy objects.
It works by sensors sensing small electricalk impulses in the wearers muscles, and then assists the wearer in moving that body part. Although currently only a prototype, the someone wearing a HAL 5 suit means wearer can lift an object that is 5 times heavier then they would be able to lift without the suit.
This has impressed the MoD a lot, and hope to come to a deal with Cyberdyne to produce a more menouvarable and stronger suit for special forces troops, and, if successful, standard ifantry soldiers.

With no real evidence that the North Koreans were in Japan for governmental reasons such as spying, they citizens have been sent back to North Korea with instructions not to come back to Japan, or they will suffer harsh penalties.
Those that were not of Korean nationality have been given a 15years prison sentence for drug and weapon smuggling.

Special Forces to have major re-fit.

Starting with the Special Operations Group, all JSDF special forces units will be refitted with more up-to-date equipment.
Most of this will come through when the Howa weapon series, mostly the HAR, come into production.
Replacing the Type 64 as sniper rifles with M24 systems, and HSRs.
All soldiers will undergo extra training under the 2nd platoon under the JMSDF. This normaly only applies to certain troops, but it will be made the normal routine for all new, and already in service troops. those that have already had this training will overlook the training of the other troops.
