SuperCarriers:

The HMS Queen Elizabeth, a future supercarrier of the United Kingdom has finished construction a little behind schedule and has begun sea trials. This supercarrier is one of two currentely being built, with the HMS Prince of Wales due to finish construction in 2012.

Both of these carriers are the Queen Elizabeth Class. This is the timeline:

2010: HMS Queen Elizabeth; construction complete & begins Sea Trials
2012: HMS Prince of Wales: Construction complete & begins Sea Trials
2014: HMS Queen Elizabeth is commissioned and begins work as a UK Supercarrier.
2016: HMS Prince of Wales is commissioned and begins work as a UK Supercarrier.

Commander expresses withdrawal hope

Britain's most senior commander has expressed optomisim that British troops could be completley out of Iraq by the end of the year, with reductions expected as soon as March.

UK announces Sierra Leone withdrawal

British forces would begin a phased withdrawal from Sierra Leone the Ministry of Defence confirmed today, stating that the country no longer needed British forces in the area, the conditions greatly improving from when forces were deployed to the country in 1999. The MOD stated the withdrawal would begin soon with all of the forces out by July. The UK currently has 1,000 Royal Marines stationed in Sierra Leone.

Commander warns of second Rorke's Drift

Britains most senior commander in Afganistan has said UK forces face being "severly streched" in Helmand along with Canadian and Dutch forces in southern Afganistan. The comment comes are Afganistan sees a major upsurge in Taleban activity, particually in the south. The commander criticized other NATO countries, particually those in the peaceful northern part of Afganistan.

"Our forces face daliy battles to survive" the commander said "and its not just us, both Canadian and Dutch forces face the same problem, weve got just over 12,000 troops in a vast violent area, Helmand alone has a population of over a million people, with just 8,000 of our troops in it."

British Forces to "Hand over Basra"

British forces are to hand over Basra to Iraqi security forces in a few weeks, it has emerged Britains commander in Iraq was quoted saying "The time has come...for the province to be handed over to the Iraqi government and its forces, the situation has severly improved over these last few years."

It is expected that British forces will begin a steady withdrawal after the handover, with as many as 1,500 troops being withdrawn before the end of the year these reports are however unconfirmed.
