Bombardier shows off its New Planes

Bombardier has released plans for its new generation of aircraft, the C-Series and the Bombardier Sonica.

The C-series is a regional jet similar to the Airbus A319, Boeing 737, Sukhoi Superjet 100 and Embraer E-195. This market is the fastest growing one in aviation, and Bombardier has said they hope to sell as many as 3000 of the aircraft between 2010 and 2030. The C-Series already has launch customers in Lufthansa and Air Canada, and is seeking new customers.

The second plane is far more ambitious. Named the Sonica and clearly taking inspiration from Boeing's Sonic Cruiser concept of 2001, the Sonica is a considerably faster (Mach 0.95-0.97, just below the sound barrier) aircraft capable of carrying as many as 300 passengers, over as much of 8,500 nautical miles, which is enough to fly from Toronto or Montreal to Hong Kong, Beijing or Tokyo non-stop, and significantly reducing the time in the air. Air Canada is highly interested in the design for long-range routes to Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia.

A Canadian Auto Corporation?

A plan is on the table to create a Canadian automaker. First proposed by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, the idea got at best lukewarm support from Ottawa but much support from the provinces, notably Ontario and Quebec. Canadian banking powerhouse Scotiabank is also a major supporter. A likely competitor is Chrysler Corporation, which is now owned by auto parts manufacturer Magna.
