The Canadian Ministry of Defense began its search for its new fighter to replace Canada's aging fleet of CF-188 Hornets in 2005, and selection had centered around the F-35 Lightning II, an aircraft planned to enter service with over a dozen nations. But a group of contractors, including Canadian aerospace giant Bombardier, engine makers Pratt and Whitney Canada, electronics developers ATI Technologies, Research in Motion, CMC Electronics, Nortel Military and Ballard Systems have all sent a proposal to Ottawa with an idea - assist in the F-35 project, but at the same time develop an aircraft that fits Canadian purposes and goals. Defense Minister Peter McKay has shown great enthusiasm for the project, and Prime Minister Harper has confirmed that it exists, and has been given a budget to see if it is a feasible project. The preliminary name for the fighter, and its accompanying engine project, is the CF-24 Carver, and the engine project is named the Athabaskan. |

The Canadian Forces have approved the development of the Carver, and have also authorized the funds for four demonstrators. If the project succeeds, the Air Command will seek to purchase up to 50 of the aircraft. |

Among the ideas proposed for the Carver is a electronic system allowing the aircraft to act as a mini-AWACS, and Ballard is proposing a liquid-nitrogen cooling system for the aircraft's hottest points. Bombardier also hopes to have the aircraft be able to launch off of ice and short runways. |

A plan for the Carver has been released. The plan is to have the fighter be capable of all roles but be primarily focused on long-range interceptor and reconnaissance roles. Design work is underway to make the aircraft a reduced radar signature (RCS) aircraft, and it will be able to carry all current airborne weapons systems of the Canadian Forces. All Carvers will be two-seaters. There will be two versions: CF-24A Carver - long-distance interception and multi-role strike fighter CF-24R Farsight - reconnaissance fighter |
