The Folketing, or Folketinget, is the national parliament of Denmark. The name literally means 'The People's Ting' - that is, the people's governing assembly.

Smoking Banned
Smoking kills thousands, perhaps even millions, of people across the world every year. ‘It is difficult,’ says Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen ‘to completely stop people smoking, but we can lower the number of people doing so.’ So, from the 6th of May 2008, smoking will be banned in all public places, including trains, buses and even streets. Smoking will be confined to the home. ‘I couldn’t possibly not ban smoking in my time as Prime Minister.’ Fogh says.

Crime!
Crime is a **** that needs wiping up, and these days, there is too much **** on the streets. Yesterday, the government proposed new plans, which involved, primarily, longer sentences for killers that lie. This comes after a killer concocted a preposterous lie while in court - he claimed that his victim 'fell off the building, and he tried to help them, but ended up bashing their head in accidentally with a hammer." Lies like this are massive wastes of police time, and have brought much more work then is needed for them. The plans say that killers who waste the police's time in this way will be sentenced to an extension of their prison term by up to five years.

Massive Advertising Campaign
The government are financing a massive advertising campaign featuring celebrities to attempt to combat crime, and anything that's generally against the law, or bad. Adverts will appear on TV, on the Radio, on posters that will be on various places, and leaflets regarding the issues will be posted to every household in Denmark.

Matters being combatted include youth crime, alcoholism, drug taking, smoking, crime in general, underage drinking, smoking and sex, and a wide variety of other topics.

Various celebrities, musicians, actors and models are appearing the campaign, including half Danish actor Viggo Mortensen, famous for playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings, and the crown prince Frederick himself.

New-Born Babies Adoption Law
The government plans to introduce a new law which will allow for newborns to be foribly removed from unsuitable parents. The current law in Denmark only allows for babies over the age of seven months to be put up for adoption. The new law would prevent children from being passed around between biological parents, foster parents and institutions. A newborn would be removed and permanently placed with suitable adoptive parents.
'There are at least 50 cases a year where it is obvious that the mother will never be in a fit condition to look after her own child. In these cases, forced adoption should be introduced earlier,' said Karsten Nonbo, a member of the Legal Affairs Committee.

Languages In Education
The government have decided that a second language must be learnt by all pupils from the age of 8, when attending Folkeskole (Primary Education). English and German are compulsory until a pupil enters the non-compulsory 10th Form, where they can choose from German, English or Swedish. This legislation makes learning a language compulsory in examinations in the 9th year, but not in the 10th.
"I'm a firm believer in children learning another language as soon as school starts. It can help them in all kinds of other subjects, and will help them develop learning skills throughout their life. It's a useful tool in this new age of globalisation." says Bertel Haarder, Minister for Education.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine
The National Board of Health is introducing a vaccination programme for young teenage girls to protect them from cervical cancer. From January 2009, all girls born in 1996 onwards will be able to receive a free vaccination as part of the ordinary 'Childhood Vaccination program', and can be vaccinated between the ages of 12 and 15. The vaccine will protect against certain forms of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is easily contracted by young women. It is estimated that 80 percent of women carry the virus at one point in their lives and it can lead to cervical cancer. The vaccine will not protect against all forms of cervical cancer so those who are vaccinated will still need to be screened regularly by their doctor.

Kicking Out the Criminals
Many of Denmark's most notorious gang members are not Danish citizens, so the Folketinget has decided that they shouldn't be allowed to continue living in the country. According to the National Police, 53 of the 141 people on its most wanted gang members list are not Danish citizens. The government have therefore decided that the perpertrators of the most violent crimes, that do not have Danish citizenship should be deported.
"If you come to this country and commit crimes as grievous as those the National Police has indicated, then you shouldn't be here," says Lene Espersen, Minister for Justice.

Food Minister Starts Trial With Cameras on Board Fishing Boats
Six Danish fishing boats have just started a trial with photographic documentation of their catches using a camera on each vessel. The cameras were mounted on the vessels over the past few days and the first catches have now been monitored and landed. Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Eva Kjær Hansen, who is behind the trial, was at the fishing harbour of the northern Zealand town of Gilleleje on 11th September to visit Tiki, one of the six vessels in the trial. The fishermen are obliged to register and account for all their catches, and they have accordingly been allotted an increase in the vessel quota equivalent to average discard levels.

“Photographic documentation makes it possible for us to see what the fishermen catch, and the complete documentation gives us an opportunity to focus closely on the fish that are discarded,” says Eva Kjer Hansen. The trial has caught the interest of people in the fishing trade and journalists from many parts of the world, and it forms a part of the minister’s coming proposals for a reform of the common European fisheries policy.

New Faroese Ministry
A new ministry has been created in the cabinet of the Faroe Islands - the Ministry of the Interior. The Minister of the Interior is entrusted with affairs related to construction, public real estate not within the remit of other ministers, municipalities (excluding measures related to public finance and municipal redistribution transfers), appeals, national roads, land-use classification, legal matters, land registers, division of land, nature, place names, advising other ministers on legislation, forestry, personal information, environmental issues, energy, climate and outlying areas. The new minister will be Helena Dam á Neystabø, the current Minister of Justice, a ministry which is being removed. The Prime Minister, Jóannes Eidesgaard says 'We don't need a Ministry of Justice so long as Denmark controls our legal system. Therefore, we no longer have a Justice ministry, but we have a much needed Ministry of the Interior.'

Euro Referendum Possible
Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen will be meeting with all the party leaders of Denmark to try and establish the possibility of a referendum on adopting the Euro as the currency of Denmark. Currently, only two parties - the Socialist People's Party and the Liberal Alliance - do not agree with the proposed referendum.
The Prime Minister will meet with all party leaders to ensure that a vote in the Folketinget is passed to allow the Danish people to vote to adopt the Euro or not. Fogh wants a quick vote on the currency to happen while a financial crisis looks to happen throughout the next year.

Euro Agreement Reached
All the nations political parties have agreed that Denmark, with approval from the Folketinget, will hold a referendum on the adoption of the Euro. After several days of meetings, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and Social Democrat leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt have persuaded other, less keen party leaders that the Euro is the way to go. Opinion polls in Denmark have previously been in favour of keeping the Krone, but the latest statistics make surprising reading.

Adopt the Euro: 67%
Keep the Krone: 28%
Unsure: 5%

This shows positive results regarding the referendum, which, if allowed, will take place in March 2009. "Things are looking promising" says Prime Minister Rasmussen; "we can be sure that the Euro will provide a boost for the economy. The krone may be an important piece of Danish heritage - but we must look torwards the economic future of our nation!"

CCTV Camera's
The government have, in a new project to cut down on crime across the board, funded a project to establish CCTV Camera's around Denmark to watch and film crime as it occurs, to provide more evidence against criminals in court. Initially the camera's will be trialled in the most crime susceptible areas of Copenhagen and Aalborg. The plan has been badly received, especially by opposition party, the Socialdemokraterne. SD leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt has called it 'A massive blow for freedom.'
Anders Fogh Rasmussen has assured the public that 'this is merely a trial, and nothing happening with this plan is happening for definite. We can be assured that crime can and will be reduced by this.'

Coalition Collapse!
The ruling Faroese coalition government of Javnaðarflokkurin (The Social Democratic Party), Tjóðveldi (The Independence Party) and Miðflokkurin (The Centre Party) has collapsed after a huge string of disagreements on important legislation. Tjóðveldi and Miðflokkurin have left the coalition, meaning that Javnaðarflokkurin has to find two new parties to rule with. Prime Minister Jóannes Eidesgaard has said "This is a massive blow to unity in the Faroe Islands, but we must move on. We will not have a general election, though we will choose our new coalition partners wisely to ensure the best results for the Faroese People."

New Coalition Formed
A new coalition has been formed between the Union Party, the People's Party and the Social Democratic Party. In a radical compromise, Jóannes Eidesgaard has agreed to step down as Prime Minister to allow Kaj Leo Johannesen of the Union Party to take up the Premiership. Mr. Johannesen, a former goalkeeper for the Faroese football team has been the leader of the Union Party since 2004. He won 21% of the vote in this year's parlimentary elections.
The new cabinet is as follows:

Jørgen Niclasen; Minister of Foreign Affairs
Jóannes Eidesgaard; Minister of Finance
Hans Pauli Strøm; Minister of Health
Helena Dam á Neystabø; Minister of Education, Research and Culture
Jacob Vestergaard; Minister of Fisheries
Johan Dahl; Minister of Trade and Industry
Rósa Samuelsen; Minister of Social Affairs
Annika Olsen; Minister of the Interior

Euro Referendum Agreed
The Folketinget has agreed that there WILL be a referendum to vote on whether Denmark adopts the Euro. The parliament has been voting on-and-off for several days, and has finally set a date for the people to choose - April 12th 2009.
"It's about time." says Per Thorsen, an unimportant member of Venstre. "Denmark needs the Euro to survive the harsh economic climate that's to come."
Dane's support of the Euro has increased dramatically since the opt-out, and it is likely that the currency will be adopted to replace the Krone. Designs have already been laid down by Danske Bank.
