Canada Asks for NAFTA Changes Prime Minister Harper has asked US President George W. Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon for talks over a number of changes to the North American Free Trade Act. This comes as rising energy prices and manufacturing job losses in Ontario and Quebec threaten Harper's tenuous government. |

Manufacturing Revival? The first quarter of 2008 saw Canada's ailing manufacturing industry actually gain jobs for the first time in a decade, with 10,700 jobs added. Critics say this could actually increase pollution levels, but others say its good for the economy, and that many of the new jobs are in the higher-tech manufacturing sector - including the re-opening of Saint John Shipbuilding in New Brunswick and new product expansions by Research in Motion, Bombardier and Celestica. Also new is the Ontario Fuel and Iron steel plant in Whitby, Ontario, which is based on a former Gerdau facility. |

VIA Ups the Speed? Proposal for Canadian High-Speed Rail to be decided by Parliament A proposed high-speed railway system has drawn both praise and criticism from all sides in Ottawa. The proposed high-speed railway will stretch from Windsor, Ontario, to Quebec City, Quebec, in three sections. The line is designed as a dedicated, double-track high-speed route. The plan is to use Japanese-designed electric-powered high speed trains, the late-model Shinkansen Model 700E and 800E. The line, as designed, will allow the sleek 700 series trains a top speed of as much as 300 km/h. VIA hopes the system will dramatically grow their traffic on the very busy Toronto-Montreal route. VIA had originally considered the even faster 500-series trains, but their cost of $60 million per set was said to be far too high. The plan has drawn fire from the NDP and Liberals, who call it an expensive project with little gain, and that only benefits areas of Canada already held by Conservative MPs. Some Conservatives have also spoken out against it, saying it is a wasteful project considering the efficient air services in Ontario and Quebec. But Harper and many Conservatives have defended it as a tool against congestion and pollution in the province, pointing out that Ontario's power is almost entirely produced by either hydroelectric dams or nuclear reactors. He also pointed out that over 80,000 people use air services between Windsor and Quebec City daily, and that VIA could conceivably make substantial profits on the system. It also was noted that the entire project is being done with Canadian companies. It looks like the project will pass Parliament. The project is expected to cost about $2.4 Billion, and be completed for the Toronto-Montreal section by early 2011, with the whole system running by late 2012. |

Election Day came, with a 66.3% turnout, and the following results came through. Conservative Party - 145 seats (37.14%) Liberal Party - 68 seats (24.17%) New Democratic Party - 51 seats (22.29%) Green Party - 5 seats (8.74%) Bloc Quebecois - 36 seats (7.22%) Independents - 3 seats (0.44%) The Government is another minority government for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party, and Stephane Dion's Liberals again take the role of opposition. The Conservatives gained a few seats, bring them within striking distance of a majority government. The NDP did resoundingly well, easily beating their 1988 record of 20% of the popular vote and 43 seats, to move the goalposts to 22% and 51 seats. The Green Party busted into Parliament for the first time, the first confirmed win being for Green Party Elizabeth May, who was victorious in her Nova Scotia riding. Four other Greens will go into the House of Commons. The Liberals did manage to take back a few Quebec seats from the late fading Bloc, but the NDP's growth in Ontario hammered their seat count. It is looking very likely that Liberal leader Stephane Dion will resign, as within hours of their election loss prominent Liberals were calling for his resignation. |
