Stock Market Hit

A surge in implied volatility measurements of the US-based S&P 500 index combined with a sharp decrease in non-U.S. stock market prices has led to a huge fall in share prices today resulting in the the U.S. Federal Reserve announced a surprise rate cut of 0.75% on interest rates. This rate cut is believed to have been influential in preventing large declines in the American stock markets, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down only 1.1% for the day, never closing that week worse than a 1.6% decrease from the previous Friday, and indeed closed up for the week. Ripples have been felt across the world.

US Missile Hits Pakistani Home

A missile from a suspected US unmanned aircraft (drone) has killed at least six people in a Pakistani tribal area close to Afghanistan, reports say. Unnamed Pakistani security sources say it hit a house in the village of Tappi, North Waziristan, and that the dead include a number of Arabs. There was no immediate US confirmation of the attack. Cross-border raids by US forces targeting Islamic militants have strained relations with Pakistan. Pakistani intelligence sources quoted by Western news agencies differed as to the identity of the owner of the house and how many people were killed. But at least some of the dead were Arabs, possibly militants, they said. American military commanders blame militants based in the tribal areas for the increase in attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. The latest incident comes a week after a similar bombing in the same region, which killed at least 20 people.

It was also the deadliest outbreak in both Tennessee and Kentucky since the 1974 Super OutbreakEighty-seven tornadoes occurred over the course of the outbreak. The storm system produced several destructive tornadoes in heavily populated areas, most notably in the Memphis metropolitan area, in Jackson, Tennessee, and the northeastern end of the Nashville metropolitan area. The weather system which produced the tornadoes also caused significant straight-line wind damage, hail as large as softballs – 4.5 inches (11 cm) in diameter – major flooding, significant freezing rain, and heavy snow across many areas of eastern North America.

Ledger Dead

Hollywood actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at his home in Manhattan. "He was found unconscious at the apartment and pronounced dead," the New York Police Department said, adding that pills were found near the body. Police are reportedly investigating if the Australian actor - nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain - died of an overdose of prescription pills. Father Kim Ledger said that the death of his 28-year-old "dearly loved son" had been "tragic" and "accidental". Speaking in the actor's home town of Perth, in Western Australia, Mr Ledger said that his son had been a "down to earth, generous, kind hearted, life-loving, unselfish individual". "Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life that few had the pleasure of truly knowing him." The actor was found dead in the apartment he had been renting for several months at 1526 (2026 GMT) on Tuesday. New York police said they did not suspect foul play and that his body had been discovered with prescription pills nearby. "We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," police spokesman Paul Browne told Reuters news agency. "There were pills within the vicinity of the bed."

Drug Raid

Yesterday the US Navy stopped the transportation of almost 3 tonnes of coccaine to the United States. The Naval ship, USS Gettysburg a Ticonderoga class Cruiser spotted the ship smuggling an enormous amount of the illegal drug into Miami as around 3 in the morning but attempted to stop the boat through negotiations. When this failed the US Marines Corp Sniper on board opened fire and took out the boats engine. Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist has congratulated the navy on its performance. ''This is a step towards getting drugs of our streets.'' he said in an interview.

FBI Investigates After Mortgage Crisis

The FBI is investigating 14 companies embroiled in the sub-prime mortgage crisis as part of a crackdown on improper lending. It did not identify the companies but said the investigation encompassed developers, sub-prime lenders and investment banks. FBI officials said the agency was looking at instances of accounting fraud and insider trading. The cases could lead to potential civil or criminal charges, the FBI said. The FBI said it viewed mortgage fraud as an increasing threat to the national economy. It said that there had been 1,200 cases of mortgage fraud for the 2007 financial year compared with just 400 in 2006. The crisis in the sub-prime lending market has hit financial markets worldwide.

The FBI said it was investigating the cases with the US market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC has opened about three dozen investigations into the collapse of the sub-prime market. Targets of the SEC probe include Swiss bank UBS and US banks Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns, Reuters news agency reported. It was not clear whether any of these firms were involved in the FBI investigation. The sub-prime market is focused on providing home loans to those with poor or limited credit histories. Many of these borrowers have been unable to keep up with payments and face losing their homes. The wider crisis emerged as many of these mortgages were converted into financial instruments and sold on to investors including the big investment banks. Defaults on these loans caused a steep drop in the value of related investments and has led to more than $100bn of losses at banks worldwide.

Naval ASW Upgrade

The US Navy will be using its new anti submarines systems on its new LPDs and will also be added to Aircraft Carriers one at a time over the next 2 years. The anti-submarine warfare package includes the unmanned Fire Scout vertical take-off aircraft, two surface vehicles and two underwater multi-mission vehicles. A manned MH-60R helicopter also will be part of the operation. The aircraft and water vessels will tow acoustic sensors capable of discerning quiet diesel-electric submarines in the cluttered underwater environment. The unmanned systems will allow the Navy to hunt those submarines without putting ships in range of torpedoes. The remote multi-mission vehicle will chug through the water like a snorkeling submarine. It will release one of two medium-frequency sonar arrays that will emit an acoustic signal or listen for returns as they are towed along. The plan is for the two RMMVs to work in concert as a bi-static acoustic detection system. The first vehicle will deploy an active sonar array and the second will tow a hydrophone array.
Likewise, the unmanned surface vehicles will carry one of two payloads, an active low-frequency sonar, called the multi-static off-board source, or a hydrophone towed array. The USV also can deploy a modified dipping sonar typically operated from helicopters. Armed with the MK-54 torpedo, the manned Sikorsky MH-60R helicopter will act as a “pouncer” to attack the threat submarine after detections are made by the sensor payloads on the unmanned vehicles. Outfitted with an electro-optical infrared sensor, Northrop Grumman’s Fire Scout rotorcraft will perform as a communications relay platform to extend the distance that the unmanned vehicles can operate away from the LCS.

Gay Marriage Ban Lifted

California's top court has ruled that a state law banning marriage between same-sex couples is unconstitutional. The state's Supreme Court said the "right to form a family relationship" applied to all Californians regardless of sexuality. The ban was approved by voters in 2000 but challenged by gay rights activists and the city of San Francisco. The state legislature twice passed laws to legalise gay marriage, but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed them.
He said California's court system should rule on the matter. The seven-judge panel voted 4-3 in favour of the plaintiffs who argued that the 2000 law was discriminatory. "Limiting the designation of marriage to a union 'between a man and a woman' is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute," California Chief Justice Ron George said in the written opinion.

Oil Suspension

The U.S. Energy Department today announced that it would halt deliveries to the strategic oil reserves this year, a move many lawmakers have been calling for in an attempt to boost oil supplies and bring down gas prices. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, located underground at four sites in the salt caverns bordering the Gulf of Mexico, was built in the 1970s after the first oil embargo to protect the country against a sudden drop in oil supplies. The Bush administration has been filling the reserve since 2001, boosting the reserve from about 540 million barrels to 702.7 million, enough to protect against a disruption in imports for about 58 days. Supporters say halting shipment to the reserve could bring down gas prices by as much as 24 cents a gallon.

US Sells Landing Slots to Ease Congestion

The government proposed today to auction landing slots at two major airports, Kennedy and Newark, and to impose a limit on airline traffic at Newark in order to hold down ticket prices and ease airplane congestion over the New York region. Together the changes are meant to untangle the metropolitan skies and to make it easier for new airlines to gain access to the lucrative New York market, a step the administration expects will help keep fares down. Eventually, the administration hopes, the changes will help smooth air traffic throughout the country.
